00:00Beach Day, by Fran Maynishkin, illustrated by Kathy Wilburn.
00:16Dedicated to 12th Street Beach.
00:18Good morning, Daddy says.
00:20I open my eyes and the sun shines in.
00:22Daddy's face is sunny too and warm when I hug him.
00:26Remember, today's Beach Day, he says.
00:29Hooray, I shout. I'm in my suit and Daddy's still washing the car.
00:33Swoosh, he shoots hose at me.
00:35I run away, so he shoots water up to the trees.
00:38It makes the leaves shiny white.
00:40Want a drink, he asks.
00:42Oh yes, and swooshes a stream at me.
00:45Mama says, everybody in the car.
00:47I sit on a towel because I'm wet.
00:49The car goes slow, then faster and faster.
00:52Whee, there goes my hair out the window.
00:55Mama turns on the radio and we all sing along loud.
00:58Then we make a big turn and we're at the beach.
01:01Guess who's in the water first?
01:03The waves are cold and taste salty and the sun is so hot it makes me see dots.
01:08All at once a whale comes and grabs my foot.
01:11It's Daddy.
01:12I scream and Mama saves me.
01:14Then Mama splashes me up and down.
01:16We try to bounce Daddy, but he's too big.
01:19So we shake our hair all over him like dogs.
01:22Then by myself, I do blind man's float with my eyes open.
01:25When I come up, I see rainbows around Mama and Daddy.
01:29All of us float to the sand van.
01:31Daddy buries me so I'll drive fast.
01:33Then Mama and I busy him.
01:35It takes a lot of sand.
01:37We get hungry and Daddy has to go for ice cream.
01:40Mine is lemon fizz wrapped in a napkin.
01:42Let's go for a walk little mermaid, Daddy says.
01:45He goes first and I try to fill up his steps before the sea does.
01:49Daddy races the waves and wins.
01:51He's faster than the sea.
01:53We get seashells too.
01:55Mine are gold and yellow and shiny like the sea.
01:58I put them in a plastic bag with water so they'll stay sunny forever.
02:02Daddy gets white shells like the gas station sign and he jangles them in his pocket.
02:06I show Mama mine when we get back and Daddy gives her his and Beau's.
02:10After a while, Daddy says,
02:12Well, I think it's time to go.
02:14I cry, but he says we'll come back soon.
02:17Our car is hot so we go fast to make a breeze.
02:20Then the sun gets golden.
02:22It slides down the sky while we race it faster and faster through the trees.
02:26Everything around us is glowing.
02:28We're going over a bridge and the water is gold and the sailboats are floating gold too.
02:33It's cool now so Mama puts a sweater on me.
02:36I'm getting sleepy so Mama thinks.
02:38Hushaby don't you cry.
02:40Go to sleepy little baby.
02:42When you wake, you'll have cake and all the pretty little horses.
02:45Lights are blinking on in houses.
02:47Bumpy bump, I feel with my eyes closed.
02:50One more bump and we're home.
02:52I pretend I'm sleeping so Daddy can carry me upstairs.
02:55He steers me to bed.
02:57Give me a glass of water, I tell him.
02:59Haven't you swallowed enough today?
03:01He says.
03:02But he brings it.
03:04Then he whispers,
03:05Good night golden mermaid.
03:06Glove glove.
03:07I whisper and hug him tight.
03:09Then I close my eyes still tasting the sea and rocking on the waves and floating to sleep in the night.
03:15The end.
03:20The end.
