I watched this show a lot as a kid, but how does the Halloween episode hold up?

00:00Alright, 1998, I was 5 years old, definitely watching Nickelodeon around this time, and
00:06one show I remember watching a lot was the Angry Beavers.
00:13The show about two beaver brothers named Norg and Dag as they learn to live on their own
00:17was one I watched quite a bit as a kid, and while not one of my absolute favorites, it
00:22is similar to Rocko in that watching it as an adult is a bit of a different experience
00:26as it kind of is an exaggerated version of some of the trials you go through when you
00:31move out on your own.
00:32It was a solid show with two fun leads that work well off each other.
00:35So the episode we'll be looking at is the season 2 episode, The Day The World Got Really
00:40Screwed Up, which, just gotta say, really forced title.
00:45So we start off in space as we get this pretty cool CG shot as the narrator says that some
00:50object from another dimension invaded Earth.
00:53We crash behind the home of this creepy looking guy, oh no he's been possessed by Vigo.
01:16We then see an actual human being being pulled away on a stretcher as we see Dag and Norb
01:21in their costumes as a toe and… archer?
01:36Also aren't you both in your 20s?
01:38They go to the house where the thing struck, which is the home of Oxnerd Monotobo, which
01:43I feel that's a reference to something so let's see here.
01:46Okay, it's two cities in Southern California, damn Californians so full of themselves they
01:51think we're gonna get that reference.
01:52The brothers are huge fans of Oxnerd as he was a B-movie actor and hoped for an autograph.
02:08We get some funny jokes and homages here as he keeps a lot of props from his old movies,
02:13but then they start coming to life which I think already makes this a better Night at
02:16the Museum horror parody than Ultimate Spider-Man did.
02:19No seriously, these things are legit creepy.
02:36He tries to shoot them with lasers, but their squabbling protects them.
02:52They look in a room and find Oxnard and two others and… god these designs are off-putting.
02:57Especially when we've seen humans in the show and they don't look like this.
03:01And I'm saying that as a compliment because that's clearly what they're going for.
03:11Hi Professor Utonium.
03:13A statue attacks them, but after it steps on Dag's tail he destroys it.
03:23I love how seriously these people take it.
03:25Admittedly, I'm not a B-movie expert, but it's kinda reminding me of that one movie
03:29in the Iron Giant.
03:30You know, the hokey acting over the top score.
03:33A rip in time released a dimensional being into our world.
03:37It crashed here on Earth, I believe, to feed upon our reality.

04:12I can feel the strength of all their realities beginning to force through my being.
04:19Yeah, that's creepy.
04:21Even worse, it turns everything black and white.
04:23Yeah, I got nothing, that was just really spooky, so, um, guess I'll just take this
04:36time to say that Dag was actually supposed to be a spleen, not a toe, so let's see
04:41if some commenter didn't watch the whole video.
04:44There are so many good jokes here, I cannot even do them justice, it's just really damn
04:49funny.
04:50Toluca and the beavers run away, but of course she trips.
04:53Don't worry, she's fine.
04:55Yeah, you're starting to make the mom from Manos look like a feminist icon.

05:14So we find out that of course it's mostly the beavers' fault, but then Toluca finally
05:18does something useful and they run away.
05:26Also gotta say, the animation is great in this.
05:34So what does the alien want?
05:41It means you and your brother, if absorbed, will be trapped for all time in a dimensional
05:46reality of madness.
05:47I've seen the show, I think they already are.
05:50So the doc tells Oxnard to hit him with the modulator thingy.
06:00As you can see, it worked perfectly.
06:02Is it just me, or was that the stupidest thing we've ever seen?
06:06Uh, no, that was actually kind of genius.
06:09I wish more conflicts would be solved just throwing a blunt object at it.
06:17Man's serve is back to normal, but the alien overtakes the house, leaving the beavers alone
06:21with the modulator.
06:23Meanwhile, Oxnard gets a call from a general, both the space kind and the immigrant kind.
06:37Unfortunately they only have stock footage of military battles, so it looks like Dag
06:41and Norb are on their own.
06:47If rodents can take these things down, not sure why I'm supposed to be scared of them.
06:51They launch the modulator thingy into the alien and...
07:09That was oddly more artistically pleasing than most monster deaths I've seen.
07:14The world goes back to color, the statues turn back to stone, though the military still
07:18feels the need to shoot it.
07:29By the way, the narrator is Peter Graves.
07:31He was in a bunch of stuff from the 40s through the 70s, most notably the Mission Impossible
07:36TV series, but most of you probably know him as the captain in Airplane.
07:40That's pretty cool.
07:41And I love that he starts nitpicking the story.
07:43That's supposed to be my job, man.
07:51You're making this harder for me.
07:56This is one of the hardest videos I've ever had to write because it's just a damn great
08:00episode.
08:01Pretty much every joke lands, it's a perfect parody of cheesy 50s b-movies, but it still
08:05manages to have some legit creepy moments.
08:08Mix that with some really clever animation, you've got a superb episode.
08:12Maybe a little light on some of the Halloweeny stuff like decorations and costumes, but it
08:16makes up for it with the atmosphere.
08:18I give the episode a 9 out of 10 and the Halloween factor an 8.
