00:00Traditionally, in October, we call it the Pink October, focusing on breast care.
00:06However, this month, we're going to change it slightly and focusing on HPV.
00:10We're going to start with how HPV can affect men, causing genital wards.
00:23What exactly is HPV?
00:24HPV stands for Human Papilloma Virus.
00:28Actually, there are lots and lots of HPV subtypes.
00:31They are high-grade and low-grade HPV, and they are typed according to numbers.
00:36The infection of HPV comes along whenever there is an intimate sexual contact or manual
00:43contact.
00:44So, meaning penetrations and also manual contact of genitalia can infect HPV.
00:51That can occur in various places of a human body.
00:54For example, the mouth, the genitalia, the scrotum, the labia, the anus, and so on.
01:01So, when that happens, most of the time, we build some sort of immune system to get rid
01:07of such virus.
01:09However, when the immune system is not strong enough, then somebody might develop a condition
01:14called genital wards.
01:17Genital wards in men occurs on the penis or the scrotum itself.
01:21In a really unfortunate situation, it might also occur in the urethra.
01:27So that itself will come out just like a protrusion of skin lesions, and they themselves look
01:34a little bit rough and a bit like cauliflowers, and they may become in a flat appearance or
01:39multiple in appearance.
01:41So the big argument is, is the use of condom protecting one from getting genital wards?
01:50The answer is not necessarily.
01:52Because the part where it's protected, there might be no transmission of such virus.
01:58However, the part such as the scrotum itself may eventually cause a transmission.
02:03And therefore, condoms itself is not.
02:06So what happens if you actually want to protect yourself?
02:10There are two ways.
02:12Number one, reduce the number of promiscuity or number of partners you have.
02:17Number two, also think about vaccinations.
02:21So if you do get it, what do you do?
02:24So some people, about 80% of the time, HPV can be eradicated naturally with your own
02:30immune system.
02:32Women actually develop immune system better than men.
02:35However, if that itself is quite painful or uncomfortable, then you can opt for some treatment
02:42such as topical cream, or you can opt for laser or ablative therapy such as cryotherapy.
02:50When that is being done, sometimes it can cause pain, it can cause scarring, and it
02:56can also come back on regular basis with recurrences.
03:00For next week, we're focusing on women.
03:03Now checking on how HPV can induce cervical cancer and also cervical neoplasia.
03:12So stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
