Who would replace Erik ten Hag if he was to be sacked from Manchester United role?

A look at who could come in for MUFC.

00:00Yeah, obviously, if that news does come, who's sort of likely to come and replace? I've seen

00:05some crazy names, you know, like Sagara Southgate, for example. Who's sort of tipped to maybe

00:11come and replace him? Because the manager market at the moment seems quite bleak.

00:16And I guess that is the elephant in the room. The manager market hasn't really changed since

00:21the summer. It's no secret that in the summer, Manchester United touched bases with a number

00:26of different managers. They had to do that as part of their strategic review to determine

00:31whether Ten Hag was the best candidate or not. They ultimately decided that he was,

00:35that there wasn't really a unanimous candidate otherwise to replace him. The only change

00:40since then is that Gareth Southgate is now unattached after the European Championship.

00:46His stock has probably fallen, given that England failed to win another major tournament.

00:50I do think that United fans, certainly from the ones I've spoken to and a lot of ones

00:54I've seen online, would be hesitant to have Southgate in. But he's someone who Ineos really

01:00do like. He's got a lot of admirers there within United's leadership group. They feel

01:04that he's the type of candidate who knows how to get the best out of these underperforming

01:09players. He could lift the mood. He's a very good coach as well, they believe. Whether

01:15you think he was a success or a failure of England, the standards rose exponentially

01:20for the England national team under Southgate. Other names, Thomas Tuchel, maybe the most

01:25experienced option who's available, but was very problematic in all his roles, really.

01:31You wonder if he's the right fit for Ineos. Do they need maybe someone who's more aligned

01:35with their thinking? Graeme Potter, I don't think United would go for him, but he's someone

01:41who Ineos like. They spoke to him about possibly taking the Nice job previously. But I do think

01:47that there isn't maybe a clear candidate right now to replace Eric ten Haag, which

01:52is part of the problem in itself. You look at someone like Ruben Amorim at Sporting,

01:56he's done well, but maybe there's a reason he hasn't got a big job just yet. Maybe the

02:01best option is to go down the Solskjaer route. Do you give it to Ruud van Nistelrooy over

02:05any hack for the interim period? See how they get on, revisit it later in the season or

02:10maybe next summer. Maybe even just see how good those interim coaches are in charge.

02:16So you can then fall down the dangerous path of getting a bit too excited, a bit too sentimental.

02:21But I think that is the problem for Manchester United, that whatever happens with ten Haag,

02:26if you stick with him or replace him, there probably isn't still that clear candidate

02:32that you'd want to stick with and say they are going to be a better fit than ten Haag

02:36was in the first place.
