00:00We're joined now by another member of the New England Patriots, Devon Godchow, Patriots defensive lineman, joins us here.
00:06He's brought to you by Shaw's and Star Market, perfecting the art of fresh, and by Drains by James,
00:11Eastern Mass' top provider of drain and sewer cleaning and repair.
00:15Devon Godchow, how are we doing this week?
00:17Doing good, how about you, sir?
00:19We're doing well. We know it was another tough result for you guys yesterday, 1-4 now.
00:25We heard Jarrod Mayo come out after the game and say defense did their job, special teams did their job.
00:30We need a little more out of the offense.
00:32Would you agree with that assessment?
00:35I mean, as the head coach said, I mean, yeah, I definitely agree with it.
00:41You know, I thought the defense probably could have held the last drive, you know, from the touchdown.
00:45It was tough, you know, it was a few, I think, 17 plays.
00:49Special teams have been doing good for, like, the last three weeks, probably the beginning of the season.
00:54Yeah, defense probably just, like, if we can, like, clean up, like, the last drive.
00:59But we were able to get the ball back to the offense.
01:01You know, we stopped them in a four-minute situation.
01:03We were able to get the ball back to them and, you know, got some points on the board.
01:07Just, you know, got to find a way to finish these games, man, because, you know, same results each and every week.
01:12You know, so close, but, you know, at the end of the day, it was awesome.
01:15You know, last week you were telling us how you thought some of the guys on defense were playing a little selfishly.
01:22That obviously got addressed.
01:23Do you feel like it was different and changes were made for yesterday?
01:27Yeah, it was big, big changes, big results.
01:30You know, we played as good defense yesterday, but not good enough to win.
01:33You know, we still came up short.
01:35But, yeah, definitely, you know, a lot of guys was locked in, doing their part.
01:39But we contained the quarterback pretty good.
01:41You know, that was a really good game plan.
01:43We looked at quarterbacking early.
01:45Sunday, we cut down the passing game for the most part.
01:47You know, got some little leakage in the run game, you know,
01:49but at the end of the day, they only scored 15 points.
01:51So that's the angle, like, you know, they was running the ball, you know, sometimes successfully.
01:55But that's the angle, like, they put up 40 points.
01:57They put up 15 points.
01:59Why do you think the message landed this week when it didn't in the past?
02:02Were there any extra steps you took to make sure that message landed this week?
02:08Yeah, just kind of like being a voice.
02:10You know, I'm normally, you know, not like a big speaker.
02:12I'm normally, like, you know, lead more with my actions.
02:15But I think just kind of like stepping up and just kind of speaking to the team
02:18and just, you know, just kind of, you know, thinking of some things we can get right.
02:21Just trying to, you know, win the division game,
02:23which was yesterday against Miami that we fell short on.
02:25But just, you know, just taking accountability, you know.
02:28We all, you know, we all just, you know, need to do more and do better, you know,
02:31because, you know, we're not getting the results that, you know, we're like, you know.
02:34So I guess it's just going to start another week of preparation and, you know,
02:38start on what's going to start today with, you know, we're doing the field
02:42and getting better from it and, you know, starting back on Wednesday,
02:45getting ready for Houston, who's, you know, red hot right now.
02:48Yeah, take it on the Houston Texans next week.
02:51But first, just with the Miami game, did you guys feel as though, you know, you'd made –
02:57it seemed like you stopped them passing the ball.
03:00You even had a great pass deflection in there.
03:02But then they decided to run it.
03:04And I'm with you.
03:05They didn't score a ton of points.
03:06But was there, you know, more kind of urgency to get off the field considering, you know,
03:12they were able to still run for close to 200 yards on the ground?
03:16Yeah.
03:17Well, I mean, you know, they schedule stuff up pretty good.
03:21You know, it's really all late.
03:23Coach Todd does run the ball.
03:24The passing was pretty much taken away.
03:26You know, make no excuse about it.
03:27You know, they had a – you know, they came in and, you know,
03:30pretty much the game was controlled by us all four quarters.
03:33You take the last, I guess, I think like 45 minutes of the fourth quarter away
03:37and, you know, I think we're – you know, it's a different result.
03:39You know, we just got to find a way to finish the game.
03:42Like I said, you know, we started off, you know, what the offense gave us 10 points.
03:45We started off, you know, dominating the game on defense.
03:47And, you know, I feel like we didn't have for the most of four quarters
03:50until like the last four minutes of the game.
03:52And, you know, they were able to sneak in a fullback dive and score.
03:56Yeah, I mean, there's really no excuse for it.
04:00You know, they scored.
04:02We lost the game.
04:03That's really all I can put it.
04:05You took 12 penalties as a team for 105 yards, and not to make excuses,
04:09but some of those penalties just didn't seem like great calls.
04:12And I'm always curious with defensive players what you guys are taught
04:16when it comes to hitting the quarterback.
04:18Because, you know, you can't hit them high.
04:20You can't hit them low.
04:21You can't land on them.
04:22Like how do you still get the quarterback down
04:24while also avoiding all of those things?
04:30You know, it's tough.
04:33Quarterback stuff is always tough because, you know,
04:36you think you're doing it right, but then you're doing it wrong.
04:39Pull the quarterback down to the ground,
04:40got to make sure there's no body weight on him,
04:42but you kind of risk an injury of yourself,
04:44tweaking the knee the wrong way, you know, trying to twist off a sack.
04:47You know, so it's kind of tough, man.
04:48Those rules are, you know, I'll leave those rules to the NFL to get fixed
04:54because they're kind of tough, especially when you got a 300-pounder
04:56coming in to get a sack.
04:58You know, you expect this guy not to, you know,
05:00get his body going down.
05:01It's tough, you know, so hopefully we can get those rules fixed.
05:05Talking to Patriots defensive lineman Devon Godchow
05:07here on Patriots Monday, Jones and Keefe,
05:09live at Gillette Stadium here on WEI.
05:12There was a report last week of the locker room teetering on a mutiny.
05:16A number of your teammates have shot that down.
05:18I don't know how you feel about that report.
05:20Yeah, I don't know where that comes from.
05:22That's false.
05:23Okay, so it's false.
05:24So how would you describe the mood in the locker room right now?
05:29You know, you're going to be disappointed after a loss.
05:31But, I mean, it's what you're going to do after.
05:33You know, I thought we took a better step forward from last week's
05:37half-time game, you know, a better step with Miami.
05:39And it's just got to get better and better.
05:41You know, we're not good enough to, you know,
05:44you're never good enough to relax.
05:46But we're definitely not good enough to just relax and just say, you know,
05:49we got all the answers and stuff like that, you know.
05:51We got to get better, you know.
05:52And it starts to impact you.
05:54It starts to, you know, taking accountability, you know,
05:56being honest with yourself, looking yourself in the mirror.
05:59And you just tell yourself what you can get better on, you know.
06:02I know this is a good football team, you know,
06:04but like I said, we just don't have the results to show that, you know.
06:07So it's easy for me to sit up here and say that.
06:09But, you know, we don't really have no actions to put towards me saying that,
06:12you know.
06:13So it's frustrating for us.
06:14But, you know, the work you put in, you know, you're going to pay off.
06:16But you're just not seeing those results right now.
06:19I'm not sure if you guys have had your squad meeting yet.
06:21But Gerard Mayo said today he was going to address the team in a squad meeting.
06:25As it relates to the quarterback, would you welcome a change at quarterback?
06:30That's whatever the coaches, you know, LA Wolf and those guys decide.
06:36You know, those guys get paid way more than my pay grade.
06:38So that's those guys' decisions, you know.
06:41They make those decisions.
06:42Whoever's at the quarterback, we're going to roll with them.
06:44Whether it's Jacoby or Drake, you know.
06:46Whoever's there, we're going to roll with them as our quarterback.
06:49So it really doesn't matter.
06:50Gerard's going to make that decision.
06:52I don't know, you know.
06:54He's going to make that as soon as he's ready, you know.
06:56So that's a question for Gerard for sure.
07:00Regardless of what the decision is, what has Drake May have been like going up
07:04against him in practice?
07:05I know he's been running with the ones a little bit,
07:07but also running some of the scout team stuff against you guys.
07:10So how has he looked over the last month at practice?
07:13You know, when you have a rookie like that, you know,
07:15you just want him to continue to grow and get better and learn, you know,
07:19because some of the great quarterbacks have started their rookie year.
07:24So when you have a guy like that behind Jacoby,
07:27behind our starting quarterback,
07:29you just want him to keep learning and have a positive attitude, you know.
07:32Just keep coming to work each and every day.
07:34And the results will come.
07:35The results will show.
07:36As long as you put the work in and put the effort in, the results will come.
07:38So you just kind of want to see him keep that positive level head
07:41and stay humble and just continue to be a learner and be a great follower.
07:47And the results will come.
07:48I'm trying to make out.
07:50I can hear some music going on in the back.
07:52What are you guys listening to?
07:53I don't know.
07:55I'm in the training room right now listening to like a little jam right now
07:57trying to get the positive vibes going around.
07:59Nice.
08:00Who is in charge?
08:01Who gets to be in charge of the music in the locker room?
08:04It's pretty much, you know, whoever wants to be in charge.
08:08You know, probably not a rookie,
08:09but it's pretty much a one-and-an-older veteran guy.
08:11Sometimes I play music.
08:12Sometimes Jawan Bentley.
08:14You know, it just depends, you know.
08:16We've got different guys.
08:17We're building an ox every now and then.
08:20Okay.
08:21Jawan Godchow, Patriots defensive lineman, joins us here on a Patriots Monday.
08:24Best of luck this week against the Texans, and we'll talk to you soon.
08:27Thank you so much.
08:28All right, Jawan Godchow.
08:31He's brought to you by Verizon, the official 5G network of the New England Patriots.
08:35You were in charge of some music at home, right?
08:36I was not.
08:37No, I tried to.
08:38Sometimes.
08:39We got pushed back pretty quickly.
08:41It's swiftly.
08:42Yeah, it was like sneak in a song.
08:43It was all, like, hate breed and, like, God of Lamb or Lamb of God.
08:46I mean, it was, like, all insane stuff, and nobody liked that.
08:49I thought that would be what the team would want to get ready.
08:51They're like, we're not playing this.
08:52No, we're not.
08:53This is not what we're doing here today.
08:54Two, three songs max, and then we're done.
