00:00Bad news for fans of brominated vegetable oil, the Food and Drug Administration wants to ban it.
00:05The ingredient, known as BVO for short, has been used in sodas and other products to keep
00:10citrus flavoring from floating to the top. But there have long been concerns about its safety.
00:14And last year, a study published in Food and Chemical Toxicology found that it could be
00:18harmful to the thyroid. BVO was banned in California earlier this year and was already
00:23prohibited in Europe and Japan. The FDA said in its statement announcing a proposed ban that
00:28Today, few beverages in the U.S. contain BVO. Coca-Cola and PepsiCo announced that they were
00:33dropping it from all their drinks in 2014. But according to CNN, comments will be open on the
00:38FDA's proposal through mid-January, and until the review process is done, BVO may still be on your
00:43supermarket shelves.
