00:00Welcome to the Pressbox episode 70, we've got sports journalist Brian Allen and Josh
00:12Partridge today and no Ben Hand, he's actually away this week so yeah it means we roll on
00:21together for the first time just ourselves, which is exciting because we're going to talk
00:27a bit about the cricket seeing as the seasons have changed and as we know cricket's a real
00:33passion of yours mate and to start with we'll look at the Cricket North comp and the Greater
00:38Northern Raiders that both kicked off over the weekend, you caught a bit of the action,
00:42what did you see?
00:43Yep, I was down at Windsor Park watching Riverside vs Mowbray and Riverside got the win there
00:49quite convincingly, bowling Mowbray out for 76 while Riverside batter Cooper Anthers made
00:5499 not out, came down to the final ball with Cooper, got a waist high full toss that he
01:00wasn't quite able to get away, it kind of shocked him a little bit so it was awesome
01:04to see that and see how close he got to 100 but in the other game it was South Launceston
01:11vs Launceston and Launceston got the win there, South Launceston were looking really good
01:16in the chase but they got bowled out, they lost 9 for 30 so that really obviously puts
01:21them on the back foot if you're going to lose that but it was a really interesting
01:26first round of games in the Cricket North competition.
01:28Yeah mate, you talked to Cooper Anthers and what about the psychology of that sort of
01:33thing I guess being stranded on 99, what did he have to say on that side of things?
01:37It was really interesting because that was a rain reduced game so it got reduced 2 overs
01:41so they played 48 overs and he said that early about the 40th over he knew obviously it was
01:47going to 48 but when it got closer to the 48 over mark he forgot that it was actually
01:52a shortened game so he actually said that once he was on 99 and people were kind of
01:58shaking his hand he was like, boys there's 2 overs left, what are you doing?
02:02So it was really interesting that that kind of slipped his mind and in the heat of the
02:06moment.
02:07Yeah that's a good story and yeah mate just moving on to the Greater Northern Raiders
02:12it was one year previewed during the week and how did that play out?
02:16Yep so the women they shared their 2 games, they played 2 T20s against Newtown and that
02:21went 1 and 1, special shout out to Peyton Stewart, she's from the North West Coast,
02:26she took 5 for 5 including a hat trick off her 3 overs so massive performance from her
02:32but in the men, the men got a win, they were playing Gornorky and it looked like it was
02:37going to be a pretty close one for a bit there but then the Raiders took 5 for 9 in the back
02:42end of that game and really won the game courtesy of Jono Chapman's 4 for 4 and Captain
02:47Coach Alistair Taylor's 50 as well.
02:49Yeah great and thanks for that rundown mate it really gives us a chance to have a bit
02:54of a look at the ins and outs and leadership changes across both competitions so I'll just
02:59go to, you said Peyton got a hat trick and I think I remember you saying Andy Gower the
03:04new Greater Northern Raiders women's coach had high praise for her in the last couple
03:10of weeks is that correct?
03:11It was actually Peyton Fulton, that's probably a good thing, there is two Peytons but no
03:18he was in regards to Stewart he said that she was so well liked amongst the group and
03:24everyone was so happy for her that she was able to do that and yeah it was a fantastic
03:28achievement to take both a 5 and a hat trick in the same game especially in a T20 and she
03:33only bowled 3 overs as well so she didn't even bowl her full overs so it was a massive
03:38achievement.
03:39Yeah and just on Gower like we both know him and he's coached the men's program before
03:46but he replaced Darren Simmons who did a great job over a series of years but yeah how do
03:52you think that Gower can lead the team?
03:55Yeah it was really interesting talking to him earlier in the week he was under no illusions
03:59that it's going to be an interesting year for the girls given how young they are and
04:03he just really wants them to band together more and be able to train together more obviously
04:09with the Greater Northern Raiders you've got players in the North and players in the
04:12North West so he wants to get them into hubs in each region and then band them together
04:17when they get the chance so that they're so familiar with each other that when it gets
04:21to the pressure moments they know exactly what to do so he's not quite sure how they're
04:26going to go performance wise but starting the season with 1 and 1 in their first weekend
04:31has certainly held them in good stead.
04:32Yeah it's a great start with a wean and a hat trick so yeah moving on to the Greater
04:37Northern Raiders men made, Alyssa Taylors at the helm again and yeah we know AT led
04:43them really well last year unfortunately they missed out on the finals because of the admin
04:48error right?
04:49So how do you think they can go this year?
04:51Yeah I think even just in their first game they were put under a fair bit of pressure
04:55Glanocki looked like they were going pretty well in the chase like they started a bit
04:59slow but they had wickets in hand so it kind of looked like Glanocki were going to get
05:04on top of them especially with Nikhil Chowdhury who plays for the Hobart Hurricanes he was
05:09on, he made mid 40s I think in the chase and he was looking really dangerous but once they
05:14got him out Jono Chapman came back on and got a wicket with his first ball of his second
05:18spell and from there it was, it wasn't necessarily always the Raiders game but they just got
05:23on top and yeah between Jono Chapman and Sam Omani from the North West Coast was curtains
05:29for Glanocki.
05:31Yeah well just moving on to the Cricket North competition in terms of ins and outs and changes
05:37well we've got Mowbray Spencer-Hayes at 20 years old and Westbury's Joel Lloyd at 22
05:43taking on the captaincies of their respective clubs and they take over from Westbury's Daniel
05:49Murfitt who led the team to numerous premierships and Mowbray Luke Scott so yeah interested
05:57in your opinion mate as a keen cricketer like what does it mean I guess for guys at
06:0220 and 22 to be leading top grade teams?
06:05Yeah it can obviously be quite scary I guess captaining with and against captaining players
06:12that are a bit older than you and against other captains that are a bit older than you
06:17but I suppose the good thing about those guys is they'll be very receptive to feedback so
06:21they'll go to the older players in their team and Lloydy will be able to pick the brains
06:25off Murfitt and have a chat to him about what needs to be done to win games of cricket
06:29and you can kind of learn on the job I think that'll be really crucial for both those guys
06:35and I suppose last week you did a players to watch which was kind of talking about who
06:39you think will be the best 11 at the end of the year so talk me through some of the guys
06:44you picked in that team and maybe how they went on the weekend mate?
06:47Yeah well to start with I went back to who made the official team of the year last season
06:56and yeah of course went with a few of the same names I mean there's some really reliable
07:03cricketers locally Daniel Murfitts and Jeremy Jackson for South Launceston so yeah a few
07:11of those obviously get in but probably best to just talk about a few of the guys that
07:15might be a sneaky chance to I guess either break in or back up last year's strong effort
07:22so with Launceston's Will Bennett talking to Heath Clayton the coach last week he was
07:27saying that he thinks he'll be one of the leading batters in the competition this year
07:31given his strong pre-season so yeah I mean in terms of the analysis obviously you can't
07:38watch every single minute of the cricket so you really do rely on the coaches and their
07:43insight so yes and yeah as we learned he had a good round one yeah can you just elaborate
07:51on that for me a little bit mate?
07:52Yeah so he captained Launceston in Cam Lynch's absence and made 66 so him along with Dravid
07:59Rau who made I think it was 84 they were the two leading batsmen for Launceston and
08:03really set that commanding title that made it hard for South Launceston to chase.
08:07Yeah great and Jared Freeman for Mowbray so yeah Jared's played for the Tassie Tigers
08:14and won the Cricket Tas Premier League player of the league for Lindisfarne last season
08:25talking to Captain Spencer Hayes last week he said he would play a number of games for
08:30Mowbray this season and yeah he suited up round one yeah obviously didn't have the
08:36best day out but what kind of impact do you think he can have on the competition this
08:39season mate?
08:40Yeah it was really interesting even though he didn't as you said didn't have the best
08:43day I suppose just watching from side on his bowling's just so different to anyone else
08:47in the comp and you can tell that he's been in a professional pathway for for the last
08:51probably four or five years of his career like you can just the way the shape that he
08:55bowls and all that kind of thing it just comes out so differently to any other bowler in
08:58the competition that and then his his hitting ability like he hit one six before he got
09:03out and and probably could have hit the ball that he got out four for six as he'd know
09:07but yeah he's gonna be completely different from Mowbray if he's able to get his good
09:12forming.
09:13Yeah and yeah finally Lyndon Stubbs an extremely reliable pace bowler for Riverside and yeah
09:23an interesting story because last season he had a bicep tear which kept him out for I
09:28think it was about eight weeks from memory and he came back with a bang he got two fifers
09:33in consecutive games and yeah a veteran of the comp but he started well again.
09:38Yeah he just keeps on getting it done Stubbs he's three for 18 off 10 in the first game
09:43this week so not just economical but also taking wickets as well.
09:47Yeah great well yeah that's obviously a real comprehensive wrap of round one but there's
09:52plenty more cricket to look forward to in the one day since this weekend but you can
09:57catch up on all our stories online and in print and we'll catch you soon.
