00:00Well, it's a very tense occasion with a place in the quarter-final against Cameroon in Naples on Sunday evening.
00:08That's what's at stake in this lovely stadium here in Bologna.
00:12The pitch in great condition.
00:14The referee from Denmark, Peter Mikkelsen, 30 years old, the youngest ever in World Cup finals.
00:21And away we go. England, of course, in white.
00:24And here's Terry Butcher dropping off de Greyser, finding Stuart Pearce.
00:30Forward into John Barnes, who's immediately in a fairly advanced central position.
00:36De Greyser, Gascoigne, getting it back to white.
00:44As I say, it's a lovely setting here.
00:46The Apennine Hills, which are just away to the right of the stadium.
00:50And then, beyond that, Tuscany itself.
00:58There's Gascoigne.
01:00Let's hope the setting is perfect for England tonight.
01:03McMahon, who clearly has a really important job tonight.
01:07Ron Atkinson. McMahon clearly is the man who's going to be close-marking Enzo Schifo.
01:14That's right, I was talking to Brian Robson just before we went home, and he was looking forward to doing the same job.
01:19He said that would be his responsibility, and I would guess that...
01:24Walker caught out there. England and both Butcher and Walker caught out.
01:28It's Schifo and van der Elst coming in, and Gascoigne have got back there in time.
01:33An aberration there between Butcher and Walker.
01:37And of all people to let in, it was Schifo.
01:41But fortunately for England, Gascoigne was right back there in a dire emergency to make things better for the men in white.
01:48Ron Atkinson.
01:49Yeah, that was indeed a let-off.
01:51A little bit more quality ball from the right from de Griessen, and I think England would have been in dead trouble.
01:55We'd have been looking for Shilton to do something for us.
01:58Here's Gascoigne.
02:02Gascoigne again.
02:04There's Parker going in, winning the header.
02:06De Wolff now, and then van der Elst.
02:08Kleisters to Koerlemans.
02:12Trying to get the ball forward, and does so for Versailles ball.
02:16And across the face of the goal, can de Griessen get in there?
02:19England in all sorts of trouble.
02:20Good work by Shilton in the first place, by Mark Wright in the other.
02:24But a marvellous ball by Koerlemans, I think it was, that suddenly put Belgium in.
02:29And if you had any doubts about the problems that were facing England tonight,
02:33in the first couple of minutes, they've been there for all to see.
02:36Good work by Shilton, alert work by Mark Wright.
02:40Rovell, a bit of freedom here, a bit of space ahead of him.
02:42Now let's see how well he can use it.
02:44He's got Parker outside him.
02:46Ahn's inside, flicks it back, but couldn't get the return.
02:49De Wolff can now bring it away for Belgium,
02:51and suddenly the Reds are coming forward in some strength,
02:53and there's Schieffel on the left, unmarked.
02:55Koerlemans away out here on the right, the captain.
02:57This is Jan Koerlemans, he's got a shot on him.
03:04Well, that's a first-class example, Brian, of attacking on the break.
03:08England going at them from a good situation,
03:10Waddle all of a sudden, possession lost.
03:12They spring the attack very quickly,
03:14and there's Koerlemans firing in and signalling his intent.
03:17And did we seem reluctant maybe to get a tackle in there?
03:19Yes, we backed off.
03:20England nil, Belgium nil.
03:23Here's Schieffel, now Koerlemans.
03:27Faced by Gascoigne.
03:30Finding Schieffel, master of most of those things in midfield,
03:34most come through him, but the man on the ball at the moment,
03:37van der Elst, is so important for them as well.
03:39De Greyser.
03:41Finds Koerlemans.
03:42Koerlemans again!
03:44Off the post!
03:45England survive, but scarcely know how.
03:50Muddled defence again in their own penalty area,
03:53and Koerlemans' shot.
03:55Look at Mark Wright, he's been a bit unlucky with his challenge,
03:58but four marks to Koerlemans, what an effort.
04:00Shilton, no way.
04:10Got to come back onside, maybe that's why Barnes was holding it up a bit.
04:13Tried to get it through then to Lineker, stopped by Gruen.
04:18Pierce.
04:21Oh, Barnes! A chance for England here!
04:26The first real bad slip in the Belgian defence,
04:29and it suddenly left Barnes free,
04:31and perhaps he couldn't believe it,
04:33but that was by no means a typical John Barnes finish.
04:36There's no danger, if this would have been for Liverpool,
04:38this would have been a goal.
04:39De Bonds missed the ball, he set up no real pressure from the defender,
04:42on his favourite foot, hasn't hit the back of the ball.
04:45Well, I've used the word earlier, goes buccaneering.
04:48He's looked a bit nervous in one or two of the early games.
04:50Lineker forward for England, taking that from Parker.
04:54And here's McMahon.
04:58Waddle.
04:59Now, can we open up the way?
05:01Lineker, played in again towards Barnes,
05:03but the flag is up, the flag is up, the flag is up.
05:09But a strike for all that, that will give England more encouragement.
05:12It won't give them a goal, there was an offside against John Barnes.
05:18But that was a bit more like the John Barnes of Liverpool.
05:20Very much so, I mean, he's taken that,
05:22I mean, he doesn't know he's offside, and looking at that...
05:24And I tell you what, I don't think he was.
05:26Looking at that, Lineker wasn't offside, but Barnes was.
05:29Because they look, they look very, very vulnerable now.
05:32Particularly at the back, I wouldn't be terribly happy
05:34with their central defenders.
05:37Here's Waddle.
05:39But the whistle denies him one more break at the Belgians.
05:42Here in Bologna.
05:43In a match where sides are looking for a place in the quarterfinals.
05:47Bobby Robson marches away.
05:49Well satisfied, I would have thought,
05:50with the way England have performed in this first half.
05:52But at the moment, it's still England nil, Belgium nil.
05:58We really are in the big time,
05:59and England seeking to get into even the bigger time
06:02of the quarterfinals of this 1990 World Cup.
06:06Belgium standing between them.
06:08And that match in Naples this weekend.
06:11Belgium then in the red strip, attacking the goal to our right.
06:17Here's Jan Keulemans.
06:22To Gerrits.
06:25Gerrits again, taking it from Kleisters.
06:28Shilton.
06:31For England.
06:37In the heat of the battle.
06:39Gascoigne swapping a joke with Schieffo.
06:46Interested to know what language they use, to be honest.
06:48Yeah, that would be right.
06:49Because I was just thinking, he does speak Belgian.
06:51They were having a good laugh in the middle of the field there,
06:53just a moment ago.
06:54He is butchering.
06:55It's probably Italian,
06:56because Schieffo has got Italian background, hasn't he?
06:58Indeed.
07:00Kleisters.
07:01There's a real possibility that Schieffo,
07:03I think he's still an Inter Milan player.
07:05I think they've loaned him out to these French clubs.
07:07And I think after his performances in this World Cup,
07:09the Italians might well take another look at him.
07:12That's a lovely ball from van der Elst to Gerrits.
07:17Van der Elst again.
07:21The ball played in for Kleisters.
07:23Plays it back to Gruen.
07:25De Wolff.
07:31Kelevans.
07:32Oh, Gascoigne snapped at him
07:34and never really looked like getting it.
07:36Wright won that well.
07:38Knocked in once again.
07:39De Greyser.
07:40And that time it was Butcher who got it back,
07:42as Schieffo was zipping in fairly quickly
07:45into that England penalty area.
07:50De Greyser.
07:51Chris Waddle with it.
07:52Thought about the throw to Parker.
07:54Decided Barnes might be the better bet.
07:56Back again to Waddle.
07:57Now let's see if he can take him on again.
07:59Sure, that's what a lot of you at home are just
08:02earnestly wishing that he will do more and more.
08:05You get a little buzz every time Chris Waddle gets that ball.
08:08There's a little flick in.
08:09McMahon's come in there as well.
08:10Now will Barnes get this on the volley?
08:12De Greyser.
08:13De Greyser.
08:14De Greyser.
08:15De Greyser.
08:16De Greyser.
08:17De Greyser.
08:18De Greyser.
08:19De Greyser.
08:20De Greyser.
08:21De Greyser.
08:22De Greyser.
08:23De Greyser.
08:24De Greyser.
08:25De Greyser.
08:26De Greyser.
08:27It's out on the volley.
08:28Peridot had to save.
08:33That was good linkup play.
08:34Good little run through from McMahon as the ball was played into him.
08:38He just made a run through.
08:39Waddle chips it in now.
08:40He looks down the back of the ball.
08:41That's a good effort, this, from Barnes.
08:44Perhaps going wide.
08:45With a quickly taken free kick.
08:48McMahon,
08:49De Greyser, this could be a problem.
08:51Groen has made a great break from the back.
08:53Culliman's in there too now for Belgium.
08:56Sliding past Butcher's challenge.
09:00Schieffo's shot, off the post again.
09:03What a fantastic shot by Schieffo.
09:05What an amazing bit of luck again for England.
09:10We must win it now, Brian.
09:11I mean, that's a magnificent shot.
09:14Hit first time from Culliman's pass.
09:17Schieffo again.
09:18Gascoigne's header.
09:20Pearce.
09:21Oh, Pearce might have played this into trouble.
09:23No, it was Wright who got it away.
09:24Only, oh, Lineker's up.
09:26What a fine header by Lineker now.
09:28Waddell, played back for Lineker, is onside.
09:32Too close to Prudhomme.
09:35And the Belgians regroup, and the ball gets back
09:38into Prudhomme's arms.
09:40And from one end of the field, when it looked,
09:43this shot here, as though England must go behind
09:45in spite of the great dive by Shilton,
09:48came back off the post, and suddenly it looked
09:50as though we were in pole position with Lineker.
09:53A lovely breakout involving Chris Waddell.
09:58Walker, getting there first.
10:00But a foul by Walker, apparently, on de Greyser.
10:05Yes, we split them completely.
10:06Good little bit of interplay.
10:08First touches and everything, he would want it to be there,
10:10Gary Lineker's.
10:12At the moment, Gazza's finding out
10:13what international football is all about.
10:16Schieffo's corner, Barnes will collect.
10:20Waddell brings it away.
10:22Gascoigne lost it to Gruen.
10:25These are troublesome times for England,
10:27and it's Schieffo on the ball again,
10:28crossed him once more, de Greyser!
10:30Just wide, but the flag was up.
10:31The flag was up.
10:35Yeah, they're certainly having a period at the moment now.
10:36The Belgians are well on top of the game,
10:38and basically it's because they've got
10:39complete domination of the midfield.
10:42This is a good low ball, low cross from that man again.
10:45Rapidly, 11 minutes now to go.
10:50Here's Schieffo.
10:52Crossed in towards Klaassen, Parker got there first.
10:55But again, a Belgian always seems to be getting to it
10:57first in midfield now.
10:58This time it's van der Elst.
10:59Here's Schieffo, this could be trouble.
11:00Schieffo's shot, Shelton saves.
11:02APPLAUSE
11:10Without a shadow of doubt, he has been an excellent player
11:12on the field tonight.
11:14I mean, I must admit, I was one of those
11:15players at this tournament, I had doubts about him.
11:17But certainly tonight, he's looked a magnificent player.
11:21Been involved in everything.
11:31Butcher, referee looked at the watch.
11:34Played nearly two minutes of time, had it on.
11:36We go into extra time in this game in Bologna
11:39between England and Belgium,
11:41with the score after 90 minutes, 0-0.
11:43We take a break.
11:45Then you will lose it on a counter-attack.
11:48Thanks, Graeme.
11:49Ron Atkinson, Brian Moore.
11:51Thanks, Shelton.
11:52As the second half gets underway,
11:54two periods of 15 minutes each.
11:56And if it's still unresolved after that,
11:59then the sides take penalties.
12:03Just as the Irish did yesterday,
12:05so successfully against Romania.
12:08Italians absolutely bubbling with the prospect of
12:11their match against the Republic in Rome on Saturday night.
12:17Well, let's see if England can join them in those quarterfinals.
12:19Chris Waddle now.
12:26De Wolff giving him so little room,
12:27but Waddle, dummying and dummying and dummying again.
12:30He's given himself a yard to get the ball in there.
12:32And it might come now for Lineker.
12:34And Platt put it wide.
12:38That, out of nothing, was a glorious opportunity
12:41for England to strike a sudden and positive blow
12:45right at the start of extra time.
12:47Ron Atkinson?
12:48I must confess, I thought that was us in the lead.
12:50The ball fell down beautifully for Platt.
12:52A little helping on board from Lineker.
12:54Platt on his favourite right foot.
12:56That may sound negative, but quite honestly,
12:58we knew the team so much in the driving seat.
13:00Schieffo towards Klassen.
13:02Look at Walker sticking with him.
13:04Oh, but now Klassen's got rid of him this time.
13:06But can do nothing with it.
13:13Butcher, Klassen's behind him.
13:16It's the long ball towards Chris Waddle.
13:18What a good ball from Terry Butcher.
13:20Lineker's in the middle.
13:21Ball is in there too.
13:22Now Chris Waddle, let that fly from there,
13:24but straight up for it on.
13:28Still feel that it could be...
13:30Waddle is the man who's really got the key to it all.
13:32Those breaks of his from the midfield,
13:35opening it up and possibly having a shot himself.
13:37I think with the omission of McMahon,
13:40we had lost the initiative in midfield,
13:43and it was a boo-boo.
13:45Here we've got Chrissie Waddle.
13:47I mean, he's had 45 minutes rest.
13:49He should be able to turn it on for us.
13:53Thank you, Jimmy.
13:54Lineker playing it in.
13:56Good play again by Waddle,
13:58but now the break is certainly on,
14:00if the legs were fresh enough for Belgium.
14:02Van der Elst, in fact, gave England a chance there
14:04by playing it just fractionally behind Gerrits
14:08and Elster Kleisters.
14:09And there are a lot of red shirts around.
14:11Here's Vesalvo.
14:12The shot is on!
14:14Just wide of the England goal.
14:19Not a lot of power in it, to be honest,
14:21but for one worrying moment it looked as though
14:23it was not only going to pass beyond Shilton,
14:26but actually go into the goal.
14:28Yes, I mean, and he looks the sort of player
14:30that could tuck that away.
14:32Didn't show him, picked just outside him.
14:34Now Schieffo is screaming for a little ball
14:36nudged down the side.
14:37I think that's got to be said about the England team.
14:39If you look through them,
14:40they've played both their subs
14:41and basically you've got Lineker, as you say,
14:44who we knew was suspect before the kick-off.
14:46We know that Walker's got a real problem,
14:48although he's sticking to these tests very well.
14:50Gerrits.
14:51A great run by the full-back, Gerrits.
14:54But not the finish that Belgium were looking for.
14:59I would have thought also
15:01with at least four red shirts
15:03in and around that penalty area,
15:05a better final pass might have been on for Eric Gerrits.
15:08He goes past Butcher.
15:09Sorry, Ron.
15:10I think once he gets to there,
15:11there's nothing else in his mind.
15:12He's going to pull it back and pull the trigger.
15:13But just look at the red shirts that were around.
15:15They were available.
15:16...minutes in this heat,
15:17then to summon up the mental strength
15:19to take these penalties.
15:22That's if it comes to it.
15:23At the moment, it's Jan Keulemans.
15:25And the end of the first period of
15:28extra time with the score still at nil-nil.
15:30Let's hear now from Elton and Graham.
15:42Well, I gather you're not hearing Elton and Graham.
15:46One thing that Bobby Robson was saying yesterday
15:48that they haven't worked on penalties.
15:50Whether that is just a very
15:52positive attitude saying we're going to win
15:54without going to penalties or not,
15:56I don't know.
15:57But looking around the side at the moment,
15:59Ron, another aspect that interests me
16:01is who you fancy to take the penalties.
16:03I mean, Lineker obviously would be one.
16:05Gary Pearce, of course, has got to take one.
16:07Gascoigne will take one.
16:08As you say, Lineker.
16:09The rest might be...
16:10Waddle.
16:11Waddle will take one, I imagine.
16:12Waddle.
16:13Bulley takes him for his club.
16:14So...
16:15Steve Bull.
16:16Yeah.
16:17So we've got players out there...
16:18Barnes, of course, is off.
16:19So...
16:20Yeah.
16:22You can't have Barnes.
16:23David Platt has taken him for the Villa this season.
16:27I quite honestly, Brian, would take penalties now.
16:30Because I've got a funny old feeling
16:32that it's our night.
16:33You know, shots that have hit the post.
16:35We've had a long period where they've been
16:37in the better side and yet we're still in there.
16:39Pearce, Classen.
16:40Watched by Walker.
16:41Gets it back to Shilton.
16:42There wasn't much room to spare.
16:44And Classen, a tough customer there.
16:46Right on the back of Des Walker.
16:48Concedes the free kick.
16:50Could depend on the nerve
16:52and the skill of five men
16:54from the penalty spot.
16:59Here's Steve Bull.
17:05Pearce.
17:06Liddick is in there.
17:07Pat's in there.
17:08Waddle's in there.
17:09Here's Steve Bull.
17:10Will he let go from this range?
17:12He's shot well!
17:13And Prudhomme turns it round.
17:17By the other England players,
17:18you can see David Platt there
17:19applauding Steve Bull.
17:20That was a good striker goal.
17:23You must think, at this moment in time,
17:25you think that one's on its way.
17:26It's a nasty old bounce
17:27just in front of Prudhomme as well.
17:29Well, he's opened himself up.
17:30He's swung it in on his right foot.
17:32You know, pencilling his penalty kickers in.
17:36I mean, it's very difficult before the game
17:38to nominate your penalty kickers
17:39because, as I say,
17:40you don't know who's going to last the distance.
17:42But hold on, here's Schieffo
17:44being pursued by Waddle.
17:47Hervoort.
17:49Finding Kleisters.
17:52Cut out by Butcher.
17:53And now Gascoigne.
17:55If only England could find a way
17:57of preventing this drama of the penalties now.
17:59Well, maybe Gascoigne's got just that thing in his mind.
18:02But in the end, he's stopped by De Mol,
18:03but England get a free kick.
18:09So the Belgians have to retreat as they do to Amand.
18:12On my watch, there's a minute of extra time remaining.
18:17If England could just unlock the door
18:19with this free kick, we'd be saved all that drama.
18:25Waddle's behind it.
18:29Gascoigne's behind it.
18:32It looks as though it might be a Gascoigne
18:34Gascoigne shot.
18:42There's a chip in there.
18:44And Platt has scored!
18:49A fantastic finale!
18:52Agony for Pridom.
18:56What an amazing finish.
19:00Shilton jogs unconcerned,
19:02but David Platt
19:05came on as a substitute,
19:07has the broadest smile in the whole of Italy,
19:10has clinched it for England in the last second of extra time.
19:14Pridom could do nothing about it.
19:16It was the goal, a brilliant goal.
19:19Just before he was about to take it,
19:21Gascoigne had a look at the bench.
19:23I think he was going to try for the big boom
19:25and stands it in brilliant.
19:27If that had been any Italian or Brazilian scoring that goal,
19:30we could describe it as sheer,
19:32a bicycle, the whole bit.
19:35Well, you've watched with thrills,
19:38live with ITV,
19:40in association with National Power,
19:42and what a climax now.
19:44But England now need to pull everybody back.
19:46We just want that referee now
19:48to blow that final whistle.
19:50England are leading by a goal to nil,
19:52and Schifo looking still
19:54to find a way through
19:56to save Belgium.
19:59He's turned one, he's turned another,
20:01but it's Lineker right back there doing the work.
20:03And in the end, it's Pearce who gets it in
20:05and a free kick giving England's way.
20:16England taking their time,
20:18Jan Keulemans quickly getting back there too.
20:20Well, you couldn't see where England
20:22were going to score that goal,
20:24and it was a moment of magic by Aston Villa's David Platt
20:26that suddenly provided it.
20:28I mean, it was an amazing moment, that, wasn't it?
20:30That's exactly right.
20:32At that moment in time, he should have said to any England player,
20:34blow the whistle.
20:36Even the crowd were whistling a little bit
20:38about England taking their time.
20:40And then all of a sudden,
20:42England are in the quarterfinals.
20:44They play Cameroon in Naples,
20:46and on the bench, they're all smiles.
20:48Peter Beardsley raced onto the field
20:50with the rest of the substitutes.
20:52Look at Bobby Robson's smile.
20:54A marvellous moment for English football.
20:56When we looked as though we might be struggling
20:58through extra time,
21:01the Belgians looked better,
21:03but England in the end have found
21:05that one, one extravagant moment
21:07from David Platt
21:09that has put the issue beyond any doubt at all.
21:11The England fans are delighted,
21:13and the players are hugging each other
21:15on that pitch,
21:17and I'm sure a nation...
21:19There's Schifo. He did so much,
21:21in the end he's got so little.
21:23I'm sure a nation at home is rejoicing now
21:25that England are in the quarterfinals of this World Cup.
21:27The fans are delighted with it,
21:29a gutsy performance by a lot of players
21:31who were less than fit,
21:33and a moment of absolute magic and perfection
21:35by David Platt of Aston Villa.
