00:00The Liberal Democrats have confirmed they've suspended councillor Tom Campion following receiving a complaint about him.
00:05Campion, who is the councillor for Newcastle's Castle Ward, which covers Dinnington, Hazelreed, Kingston Park and Great Park,
00:11is now listed on Newcastle City Council's website as an independent.
00:14The details of the complaint against Mr Campion haven't been made public.
00:18A Lib Dem spokesperson said,
00:20The group has been informed that Tom Campion has been the subject of a complaint received by Party HQ.
00:24His party membership, together with his group membership, have been suspended without prejudice until an investigation is concluded.
00:30Mr Campion has sat on Newcastle City Council since 2021 and has been his party's spokesman on transport issues.
00:36He stood as a parliamentary candidate for Cramlington and Killingworth at this year's general election
00:40and also as Blyth Valley candidate in 2019, but this was under the name Tom Chapman.
00:45In the run-up to his election in 2021, Councillor Campion had to apologise for multiple offensive tweets he posted when he was 14 years old.
00:52Mr Campion's suspension will not be welcome news to the council,
00:55who are still trying to win back public trust following recent controversy involving the council's Labour leadership.
