00:10Colin loved the script for the Batman,
00:12but was actually a little unsure
00:14about whether or not he wanted to play the Penguin.
00:17Matt told me about what he felt the Penguin should be.
00:21After reading Matt's script,
00:23I really got a sense of who he was.
00:25Matt said to me,
00:27have you been talking to Mike Marino?
00:29I said, yeah, we've been texting a little bit
00:30and sending pictures back and forth.
00:31And he said, so has he shown you
00:33what you're going to look like?
00:35I said, no.
00:35And he said, you want to see?
00:37And I just saw this beautifully sculpted 360 degree bust.
00:41I looked at the character and I just saw history
00:43and I saw pain and I saw aggression
00:46and I saw cruelty and I saw a bit of sadness
00:49and it was all there.
00:52Can you imagine to be remembered like that?
00:55I have to express what I feel through the design.
00:59So on the Batman, I took license with him.
01:02I put a big scar across his face.
01:04I gave him this very specific long nose
01:06that resembled a beak from the side.
01:09All of these elements coming together,
01:11create personality without Colin even speaking.
01:16I was overwhelmed by the brilliance
01:18of what Mike Marino and his team created.
01:20Each day Colin is in the makeup about three hours.
01:24We actually have to flatten his hair
01:26and then we sculpt the bald cap that glues over that
01:28and we paint that to look like flesh.
01:31Then we glue on the neck.
01:33Then the cheeks go on, the ear lobes go on.
01:36There are lower ear lobes that sit
01:38and hook onto his cheeks.
01:40Then we have a chin, which changes the shape.
01:44Then it's the nose with the upper lip
01:45and his upper lip kind of pushes up
01:47and we glue on eyebrows, giving him this bird penguin look.
01:52I thought that would be a good idea.
01:54Psychologically, to make him look a little angrier.
01:57Later on, the hair goes on.
01:59He's got a receding hairline
02:01and it combs back and parts to the side.
02:04Once the hair pieces are on, he's done.
02:06It's like a puzzle.
02:07I've never done full prosthetics before.
02:09I've never been so buried beneath
02:11the artistry of someone else.
02:14This particular incarnation of the penguin,
02:17we thought it would be interesting
02:18to show some sort of affliction,
02:20which causes his gait to be a little penguin-like.
02:24Something Colin and I talked about a lot
02:26is he's like, I think when I'm not around people,
02:29I limp more.
02:31And when I'm in front of people like the Falcons,
02:33I'm trying to hide it.
02:35Maybe we don't see eye to eye in every little thing.
02:37You know, maybe you don't like me.
02:39It's fine.
02:40I'm gonna quiet taste.
02:42The fact of the matter is,
02:44there wouldn't be this show if it wasn't for Mike Marino.
02:47What he created through his skill,
02:50his passion, his twisted imagination was so iconic.
