Why Hurricane Categories Make a Difference(360P)
Transcript
00:00When it comes to hurricanes, each one's impacts are a little bit different, but the wind speeds
00:08that we talk about along the Saffir-Simpson scale, those are very specific.
00:12And the damage caused in those categories, kind of predictable.
00:15So let me show you.
00:16Let's start off with a Category 1 storm.
00:19And the damage here, not too bad.
00:21A couple of shingles fall off, you can have some palm fronds bending in the wind, but
00:25everything basically remains intact.
00:28Category 2, that's where you really start to feel it.
00:31Look at the windows of the house.
00:33They can be hit from debris from the outside and already start breaking.
00:36In a Category 2, your trees are significantly bent over in the wind, and the siding of the
00:42house itself can break, flapping there in the wind, adding to those eerie noises inside.
00:49Category 3, I've heard only a Category 3, but it's not only anything except really bad
00:54news.
00:55In a Category 3, you can have the door of the house blown in because the winds get so
01:00strong.
01:01You can have the roof of the house start to flap up and down in the wind because it can
01:05lift off those weak points.
01:07And a lot of those trees start to fall.
01:10Category 4, the damage is even worse.
01:12You get most trees falling, most of your windows breaking, most of your shingles fly away.
01:18And then Category 5 is as high as the Category scale goes.
01:21By Category 5, no shingles remain anywhere nearby.
01:25The holes in the roof get so big that the walls of the house start to fall because they're
01:29not attached to anything anymore.
01:31There won't be any trees up in the neighborhood.
01:34That's just catastrophic damage.
01:35But again, that's just from the wind, and there are other impacts from hurricanes, and
01:40they all vary through the season.
01:42So stick with the Weather Channel to keep you safe when tropics head towards your neck
01:45of the woods.
