00:00Daddy, can you read me a story?
00:03Broken Crayons Still Color by Tony Collier with Whitney Bach
00:09Illustrated by Natalie Basilica
00:12Avery loved coloring.
00:15She didn't have many crayons, but yellow flamingos and green unicorns were more fun anyway.
00:21Then one day she got a new crayon box with tons of colors.
00:27Turquoise like the new nursery, violet red like her new shoes, and cadet blue like her
00:36new house.
00:37Tomorrow Avery would bring her new crayons in her new backpack to her new school.
00:44Suddenly she felt flippy and fizzy and fluttery inside.
00:50When mom called her for dinner, Avery didn't feel like eating.
00:55Would you like to say a prayer before your big day?
00:58Dad asked.
00:59No, Avery whispered, I'm too scared.
01:05You can do hard things, Dad squeezed her hand, even when you're scared.
01:13Later Avery wanted to draw her first day of school outfit, but that's not what she drew.
01:22Then she tried to draw the school playground, but that's not what she drew either.
01:29Avery doodled and dotted and dashed until, crack!
01:37The crayon broke in half.
01:39Avery grabbed another, but it broke too, crack!
01:45She grabbed another, and another, crack, crack!
01:51Avery tried to shove the pieces into the box, but that's not what happened.
02:01What have I done?
02:03Avery cried.
02:04I'm a mess, just like these crayons.
02:09When Avery's sobbing quieted, she heard a small scuffle.
02:14Then a tiny voice said, Avery, girl, it's not nice to put people down, even yourself.
02:25Right, Omar?
02:27Avery's red crayon was talking and walking, and Omar, the orange crayon, was bouncing.
02:37That's right, Ruby.
02:40Guys, don't forget me.
02:46Beatrice, the blue crayon called.
02:49Here, let me help Beatrice, the purple crayon said.
02:54Now about you, Grace.
02:57Thanks, Pedro.
02:58You are so sweet, Grace, the green crayon turned to Avery.
03:08It sounds like you need help.
03:11Before Avery could reply, Omar said, Whoa, these drawings are amazing.
03:20Is tomorrow your first day of school, Grace asked.
03:24Avery sniffled and nodded.
03:28So why are you crying, girlfriend, Ruby asked.
03:32I'm crying because, Avery didn't know how to explain the flippy, fizzy, flurry feeling.
03:41I got messy inside and ruined all of you.
03:45Girl, don't you know, Ruby said, we don't have to be perfect to be useful.
03:54And no mess is ever too big for God, Pedro added.
04:00And we're going to help you have a great year at school, Omar finished.
04:06How, Avery asked.
04:09First things first, Ruby said.
04:12I want you to know it's okay to be upset.
04:16You're not a mess because you have messy feelings.
04:20But let's keep big feelings from becoming bad actions.
