00:20is that how Carrie Ann likes it I mean hardly unless you're not quite as loud also this
00:25morning on the show Paula Duncan is going to join us the beautiful girl
00:28that she is she'll be with us later on Robin please welcome two of the finest
00:32stars in Australian show business David Atkins and Debra Bird
00:42well it's a bit I know I've been away for ages would you would you apologize
00:51for that please don't see it rolling back speaking of apologies I've got to
00:55say right from the start I can guarantee you one thing this morning
00:58David but on the show during this chat no small gags at all no jokes at all I
01:04have been told by my wife Patty actually she said I love David Atkins and he's
01:09such I mean he's one Olivia now and there you are you stupid old crumpet
01:13sitting there with your great big round face doing short gags and you must stop
01:16it immediately so I will stop it I'm not and I won't and I'm not gonna do any
01:21stick either I mean I think what we should call it it's very fair enough
01:24and I think it's it's it's it's unbecoming of both of us will you accept
01:27my apology I certainly do and will you accept mine
01:41doesn't get any better either I can tell you that there it's absolutely dreadful

01:50can I take it for the collection of all the other ones yes it's for your pencil

02:18did you 10th of August at Her Majesty's Theatre yep in Sydney tell us about the
02:24beginning together of yourself and and Deborah well as Rhonda as you know is
02:29has a little baby now yeah the leg Alexandra Grace and and she did the show
02:34up until I think she was six seven months pregnant yeah and we used to
02:39Deborah that was I said no well if you happen to get pregnant would you would
02:43you do it up until so no no not not I used to do that sort of thing I don't do
02:47that we're learning a lot this morning so yeah and and of course that was
02:55through the Brisbane season and then we still had we had several seasons still
02:59to play in New Zealand and of course Sydney in this final sort of farewell
03:02tour if you will and how long now David in August will be three years when you
03:07started out or kidding aside with it I mean it really has become one of the
03:10icons in Australian show business as far as shows are concerned did you did you
03:15realize there was that much life you know I mean we were we were battling to
03:18get the show from the Hill Center you know which was this little suburban
03:22almost Town Hall about an hour's drive from Sydney from there to you know to
03:25Melbourne in its first season and now it's I mean it's still as we speak now
03:29it's playing in London with an English cast during you know it's wonderful I
03:32mean when you saw the opening night in Melbourne which I went to yeah when
03:37people were wanting to stand up you must have felt that when people wanted to
03:40stand up after rug cutter which is probably what the first song in you
03:44must have known then when I saw it when I saw it in Melbourne I was just that's
03:59what I wanted to do that show you know so I arranged that whole thing with
04:03Rhonda did you really we've got some footage here of this magnificent show
04:09and I think the thing about hot shoe shuffle that's maybe a lot I do beg your
04:13pardon we've run the wrong footage that is Beauty and the Beast which I
04:17princess theater this coming this coming set please accept my apology immediately
04:22won't you we've got some Rick I got it's funny enough I really knew you were
04:26gonna do that surprise we have got some footage here with hot shoe shuffle and
04:32the thing about the show is the energy level and how do you manage to keep it
04:36up so high the energy no no no I'm not going to yeah it's it's it's got to do
04:45with a lot of a lot of it's got to do with the enjoyment that comes from
04:47actually doing the show it's a lot of fun I mean it's actually really it looks
04:50like it's fun but it actually is fun and it's also I mean it's the sort of
04:55choreography that having done you know lots of shows where we've done other
04:58people's choreography especially the tappers in the show the boys having been
05:02restricted by certain types of work and like things like 42nd Street which were
05:06fantastic shows but a lot of the boys you know like Dean for instance Dean
05:09Perry who did 42nd Street that they didn't they haven't suddenly got the
05:13skill and the tap skills that they're showing you in hot shoe shuffle I've had
05:16them all along but they've never had a forum to actually show them off and
05:19that's that they can do they can show off in the show they can actually show
05:22you all the tricks that they've been working on for years and that's that
05:24that's what makes it exciting for yep certainly Deborah how long had you
05:28worked together before you don't for this we've done lots of stuff together
05:32but we Debra and I did we did dancing the first two shows dancing in a
05:36dynamite we combined them and and Debra did there you go that's that's part of
05:41dancing dynamite and Debra did that season with us here we go
05:45exciting stuff after the show it must be a case of just lying down somewhere and
05:57trying to get your breath I mean it's amazing the things we've done over the years I don't know
06:04oh look at that something's connected it's dead wonderful well look I I love
06:11the show and I have so much fun and I and I play a character that doesn't die
06:15or cry kidding aside how did you show off Rhonda I mean what did you what did
06:18you do are you gonna miss her miss Rhonda yeah well I hope I hope that's
06:27the answer because she's here this morning come in Rhonda
06:43oh he said she organized for you to get pregnant
06:50we wanted to meet each other for lunch now we've done it how do you feel about
06:57the whole situation oh I'm a bit tired I was up at four o'clock everybody in the
07:04in the company of Beauty and the Beast who knows you said that what you'd said
07:07on the show last week week four is very true that you do love 12-hour sleep I
07:13mean you'd like plenty of sleep when she first said that she was gonna have the
07:18baby yeah and we've got to I just never I mean I still don't believe that that
07:23she actually does it I mean I think the baby was bought somewhere somewhere else
07:29it's like come but well Rhonda would go to sleep after the show and you couldn't
07:32contact her for 15 hours and she would be in bed for 15 hours and she puts on
07:36the mask and the earplugs we have to knock on a door at five o'clock to get
07:42her to come to the show at eight and she'd still be in bed and be asleep she
07:44haven't even mentioned that that's how I got through it I guess to do it so to
07:49start because it's pretty stressful isn't it she's just come just in case

08:03that's our resident mother craft nurse by the way Jen Brown and show her the
08:08front of us she got this made especially for this morning just in case she didn't
08:12turn up the day before and look out Jen she looks a bit hungry
08:19she's got little taps on this morning just in case you know
08:24look at the little taps Jack Webster supplied those taps yes you didn't lend them of course David did you
08:32no of course you love you twice love your haircut by the way mother that is
08:37absolutely tell us all about that I was in New Zealand the shows come from
08:42New Zealand and and we had a break between two seasons no sheep jokes we've
08:50done all that no and I said I said to the lady because we actually in the show
08:54the boys haircuts are short on the side along on the top and and I said to her
08:58and I you know you're joking so I'll just shave it all off yeah and she had
09:01the clippers and I thought she was just gonna go through the sides as they
09:03normally do and she put the clippers here and went like that and before I could
09:06go yeah it was like yeah you know and there was a number four and I just had
09:10nothing left how'd you feel about the Olivia we're absolutely thrilled for I
09:13mean all kidding aside the the amount of awards that you've won including a
09:16recent mo there's one of the the older mo's but to get the Olivia as Deborah
09:21and I was saying before the show I mean you really sit up and take to notice
09:24it was it was a it was a very exciting night that to be nominated in the first
09:40place we never I mean we never expected that because it was hard slog over there
09:44to convince the palms to you know to embrace the show in any way the
09:46audience has loved it but they you know the the theater world as it were you
09:50know they sort of they're a bit like you know who's this little show from
09:53Australia and and to finally it's true it's true and and it's sort of like a
10:05baby's out what are you talking about and get on to the mo she said yeah I get
10:14the English Awards yeah excuse me how did you bring your mother well this is
10:18interesting story this is it like we got the award and it was the awards not
10:23the night itself finished at about 11 o'clock and then we went on to a they
10:26had a big dinner at the grove at Gravenhouse afterwards and I got back to
10:29the hotel at about one or two o'clock in the morning and I picked up the phone
10:33and I rang mom and I said mom you'll never guess what and she said yeah
10:35Bert's just told me it was extraordinary that within three hours that people back
10:42in was last week's mo order the week for didn't you win a TV one yes I've got
10:47two oh that's it there there was an Australian ambassador of music and what
10:52don't worry about the viewers view Deborah just don't look yourself there
10:57is there is I mean I've got quite a few of these that I've never read there is
11:01an award which actually personally I think actually supersedes both of them
11:04what's wrong well it's an it's a special award and it's the one that that I take
11:09the most pride in and it's the one that's true it's a it's a it's a
11:13probably more it's a more prestigious award than the Olivia and the mo combined
11:17and it's it's it's come it's the result of doing you know like 30 years in the
11:22business absolutely and we're about to take the show off off to Japan you know
11:27in November and and this is a this is an award which is like the Southeast Asian
11:32Pacific Basin I didn't know you could dance in Japanese that's wonderful you
11:34do it sideways yeah the shock but anyway this is this is an award which I'm very
11:42personally very proud of and I've saved this money shows the bloody award will
11:47you I'll save this moment to reveal it okay you get the tag David good luck
