14:29Construction kicked off in 1406 by the Yongle Emperor, a big name in the Ming Dynasty, and it wrapped up in 1420, with a whopping million people having worked on it.
14:38The complex is packed with around 1,000 buildings and around 9,000 rooms, all surrounded by a massive wall and broad moat.
14:46The whole layout was carefully planned to line up with traditional Chinese feng shui, running along a north-south axis.
14:52The Forbidden City splits into two main areas, the outer court and the inner court.
14:57The outer was all about the pomp and circumstance, think big state events and where the emperor held his court.
