Is the UK a takeaway obsessed nation?

Does a takeaway tickle your fancy every weekend? Or do you find yourself having a few cheeky takeaway treats mid-week too? Well, a new study has revealed the most takeaway-obsessed cities in the UK.

00:00It's been reported that the average annual spend per person on takeaway food in the UK
00:07increased from ÂŁ452 in 2019 to ÂŁ641 in 2021. It's thought that those under 25 are the
00:15biggest takeaway fans, with the average person spending ÂŁ43 a week on takeaways.
00:20With pizza and Chinese proving as the top most popular takeaways, Indian food, burgers
00:25and fried chicken were then the following most popular takeaway choices for Brits.
00:29But why is it that we continue to grow as a nation of takeaway lovers?
00:34Well, according to research by Ninja, 38% of respondents revealed that some find cooking
00:40too time-consuming, with more than a quarter revealing they lack the proper cooking skills
00:44to cook themselves real meals. In a 2023 review conducted by Just Eat,
00:50the online food order and delivery platform found that some of the platform's best sellers
00:55last year included cans of Coca-Cola and sales of Ben & Jerry's cookie dough ice cream.
01:01The study went on to report that the sale of prawn crackers alone grew by 999% in 2023
01:08compared to 2022. The platform even revealed their top 10 dishes. Chips made the top spot,
01:13followed by pilau rice, sausage rolls and curry sauce.
01:18The Food Foundation has previously found that
01:21the density of fast food outlets is greater in more deprived areas, almost twice as high
01:27in the most deprived local authorities compared with the least deprived. Easier access to
01:32neighbourhood takeaway outlets has been shown to increase consumption of takeaways and is
01:37associated with higher weight. The current government has already confirmed that from
01:42October 2025, a ban on junk food adverts being shown on TV before 9pm will come into force.
01:50The government has said that this decision is aimed at tackling childhood obesity.
