Mayor of Atlanta on Hurricane Milton: “Don’t take any storm for granted"

Hurricane Milton is barreling towards Florida, and Atlanta's mayor doesn't want people underestimating the storm.

00:02When they start talking about it on the Weather Channel, on the news, if it's in the Gulf,

00:08our Office of Emergency Preparedness starts to have weather forecasts.

00:13We start having screens available for us to watch this storm.

00:18Because they shift.

00:19They can make rapid shifts or even shifts that are undetermined how large they're going

00:26to be.

00:27And so don't take any storm for granted.

00:30Make sure that you stay ready so you don't have to get ready in some kind of format that's

00:37not planned.

00:38You want to be ahead of it.

00:40But it's also to make sure that people have some self-resiliency.

00:44Government has a tremendous role.

00:46And local government, people come to local government for everything, right?

00:51And you have to know that.

00:53People are going to ask me about postal service, right?

00:56People are going to ask me about their food stamps, their SNAP, their whatever.

01:01And that's not a local function, but I have to be aware of it.

01:04People are going to ask me about a number of things, right?

01:08So it's being prepared, being collaborative is so important.

01:12I have to know, and government, the local government, the ones that they see in the

01:16grocery store every day, the ones that they hang out with, they come to us first.
