When Londoner Thomas Gynn escapes from his dodgy associations in the capital for a new life up north, he needs to 'stay lucky'. He literally runs in to feisty Yorkshire lass (and damsel-in-distress) Sally Hardcastle on the A1 - getting her broken down car back on the road. Sally runs a narrowboat business in Leeds, and it soon seems that this unlikely couple will be exploring new and uncharted waters together.
Thomas takes Sally on a nocturnal visit to pick up some novelty alarm clocks - but instead they inadvertently end up rescuing Europe's number one hitman... in a somewhat unlikely turn of events. He seems rather pleased to have been relieved of his 'Chicago Overcoat', and is keen to repay them for their trouble - but could it have deadly consequences?
Starring Jan Francis, Dennis Waterman, Michael Jayston, Dean Harris, Tim Wylton, Denis Lill, Niall Toibin. Directed by David Reynolds. Screenplay by Steven Moffat.

27:59Do you really think that's going to fool me?
28:01I think it might if you try a little harder.
28:04He's going to wait here for Adams to appear at the window.
28:08Oh!
28:10What are you doing?
28:12I think you're the devil, Mr. Valentine.
28:15Give me the control, Sally.
28:21I don't get it.
28:23I really don't get it.
28:25Who is this Adams?
28:28Haven't you finished yet?
28:31Me? Yeah, yeah, all done. Look at that.
28:33Clean as a whistle.
28:34Well, you can go then, can't you?
28:36Yeah, I can go.
28:38Excuse me, I'm going to have to ask you to keep well away from this window.
28:42What? Why?
28:46Well, you might make it dirty.
28:57Come on.
29:22Look up at the window, Sally.
29:25It's right in place.
29:28And all you have to do is press a button.
29:32Just one button, Sally.
29:35At the tiniest pressure of your thumb.
29:38No one would ever know.
29:41You have the word of a professional for that.
29:46Come in.
29:51I'm just here to clean your windows.
29:56I think it's time I went for lunch.
30:02What are you trying to prove?
30:04More than trying, I think.
30:06Sal!
30:08K1 to K2.
30:10He's got a remote control gun at the window of the hotel.
30:13You've got to be careful with that, mate.
30:15I mean, they start switching channels in the next room,
30:17you could machine gun the entire street, couldn't you?
30:19Look, I really don't think we should stand here.
30:23Where's your car?
30:25What?
30:26We're in trouble. Where's your car?
30:28It's the end of the road. What's up?
30:30Let's move it.
30:32K1 to K3.
30:34Get the car round here fast.
30:36I'd like to, sir.
30:38But we've got a slight problem here.
30:40Look, I'm trying to tell you, the taxi for Kelsall Street was a mistake, all right?
30:44I don't know how they found me. They must have been watching the hotels.
30:47Who?
30:48Our friends from the warehouse.
30:51Alan, follow them.
30:53Run!
30:57Run!
31:21Come on. Hurry.
31:25Alan.
31:44What have you found?
31:47Some kind of remote control, I think, sir.
31:51With a button on top.
31:55Sir, did you hear a shot?
31:59Sir?
32:01Sir?
32:15Look, can we just get this straight once and for all?
32:17We do not want Adams killed. Do you understand me?
32:22Are you listening to me?
32:24We don't want this!
32:26Listen, just for once in your life, listen, will you?
32:29Thomas!
32:35You've done everything in your power to stop me.
32:37Your conscience should be clear.
32:40I pay my debts.
32:42That's a point of honour.
32:45I'm sure you understand.
32:59I love you.
33:20A freak incident at Leeds Town Hall yesterday
33:22caused something of a surprise for Councillor Humphrey Adams
33:25when his office window spontaneously shattered.
33:28Councillor Adams, who had just stepped out for lunch when it happened,
33:31commented that the window in question had been giving trouble for some time.
33:35Mr Adams is this evening appearing in a special charity show
33:38at the City Varieties.
33:40And finally, alarm is being caused by mysterious outbreaks
33:44of ghostly singing from a deserted canal-side warehouse.
33:51Thomas, I'm going to let a man die tonight.
33:58I love you.
34:16Trevor, it says here elephants.
34:18Slip of the pen. I meant the dancers.
34:21Ah, right.
34:24Bill?
34:27Be honest, do I look like a dog?
34:30Which end?
34:35Are we using that old lighting box?
34:37No.
34:39Well, no-one should be in there.
34:41See, I just don't feel enough of a dog yet.
34:44Take a walk, Brian.
34:46Yeah, that might do it.
34:54You'd better come in.
35:00There's only one thing we can do.
35:03We go to the police.
35:05The police? Yeah, smashing idea, that, innit?
35:08Excuse me, officer, we happened to have accidentally hired a hitman
35:11to knock off a councillor, but we didn't mean to, honest.
35:14And you've got lots of bars on your windows.
35:17OK, so we don't go to the police.
35:21OK, so we don't go to the police.
35:25What's your name?
35:28Bill.
35:30And what do you do here, Bill?
35:33I'm a stage manager.
35:36How interesting.
35:38I've done a couple of directors, but never a stage manager.
35:43There's only one thing we can do.
35:45We try and warn Adams again.
35:47Yeah, yeah.
35:49I'm sorry, Mr Adams, we just happened to have hired a hitman to kill you.
35:52You know how these little things happen.
35:54All we want you to do is stay away from the windows and don't phone the old Bill.
35:57Oh, look, we're back in that little room with a toilet in the corner.
36:00Are you just going to sit there and be sensible all the time?
36:10My problem is this.
36:13If I let you out of here alive,
36:15you're going to tell someone about me, aren't you?
36:18You're going to assure me you won't tell a soul.
36:21The thing is, I find myself unable to trust you.
36:25I'm afraid one meets a lot of untrustworthy people in my profession, Bill.
36:29Briefly.
36:38Drink, Bill?
36:41Right, there's only one thing for it.
36:43We find Valentine and we stop him.
36:46Bill, look under H for hitman.
36:49We know where he's going to be tonight, that charity show, I'm sure of it.
36:52Look, even if you're right, we can't stop the man, we've tried.
36:55Well, I'm going to the theatre.
36:57Sally, Valentine is a killer, right?
37:00With a load of other killers, right?
37:02And it's terrible. I'm just thinking of your safety.
37:04Fine, OK, I'll stay.
37:06You go.
37:08You'd let me go all on my own?
37:16Whiskey.
37:18What did you expect?
37:21I can't kill you, you know.
37:23If you go missing before the show, they'll look for you.
37:26If they look for you, they might find me.
37:28You see the problem?
37:30I can't keep you here.
37:32I can't let you go.
37:35Drink up.
37:46This is stupid.
37:48Shouldn't we think about this a bit more, talk it over?
37:50What is there to talk about, eh?
37:52You give me one good reason why we shouldn't go straight to that theatre.
37:55Or we might not get a ticket.
37:59Amateurs.
38:01Must be the most easily traced car in Leeds.
38:10There now.
38:12That help at all?
38:14Give you any ideas?
38:21Where do you suppose they're headed?
38:23I don't know.
38:25Valentine's bound to be there somewhere.
38:38But does it say dog to you?
38:40It says dog.
38:42It says dog.
38:44But does it really say it?
38:46Brian, it barks, OK?
38:48What do you mean?
38:50There's a...
38:53There's a...
38:56Uh-huh.
39:13Are we going to stop this, Valentine?
39:15I suppose we've actually got to find him, haven't we?
39:17What do you suggest, eh?
39:19That we leave him a note at the stage door?
39:21Well, a strongly wordy one.
39:38Thank you, my loves. Thank you.
39:40Thank you, my loves. Thank you.
39:42What a fabulous crowd.
39:44Anyway, we've got a fantastic showbiz extravaganza here for you tonight.
39:48Some of the acts we've got tonight will totally underwhelm you.
39:51Here in the entertainment mecca of the Northern Hemisphere.
39:54The band are working under a severe disability this evening.
39:57They're sober.
39:59But anyway, we've got a fabulous sort of out-of-season pantomime for you.
40:03And we've got lots of local celebrities.
40:05Now, see how many you can spot,
40:07and we've got quite a few surprises for you.
40:11Ten quid a ticket? That's a bleeding liberty, isn't it?
40:15So where's Valentine?
40:17Somewhere where he's got a clear view of the stage, I suppose.
40:20That certainly narrows things down, doesn't it?
40:22Mm.
40:24Listen, if you go backstage, stop Adam's going on.
40:27How?
40:29Well, you're the one always going on about your clever Tom, aren't you?
40:32You've been quite complimentary yourself at times.
40:34Oh, shut up.
40:35Hold on. What are you going to do, then?
40:37What we should have done a long time ago.
40:40Come on!
40:44Oh.
41:06Come on.
41:20You've got to listen to me.
41:22You've got to listen to me.
41:24Oh, police, please.
41:27APPLAUSE
41:33Mr Adams.
41:38CHEERING
41:40Greetings, ladies and gentlemen.
41:43Oh, I am the great Taranski.
41:47I am here to bring you magic seldom seen
41:50and rarely performed from the magic east.
41:53The ancient bottle and glasses.
41:56Now, this glass is 5,000 years old
41:59and this bottle 10,000 years old.
42:02Should this bottle disappear, it will be tragic.
42:07Should it reappear, it will be magic.
42:13The City Variety's leads that there's a man with a gun,
42:16so for God's sake, hurry.
42:18Someone's going to be shot.
42:20Shot?
42:23HE LAUGHS
42:25I shall now demonstrate some of my more remarkable and incredible...
42:31Could you come offstage with me behind this tree, please?
42:34Ladies and gentlemen, I took a...
42:37Ladies and gentlemen...
42:39Ladies and...
42:41Will you stop doing this?
42:43Anyway, get out of my way.
42:45Ladies and gentlemen...
42:47Ladies and...
42:50Late, ladies.
42:54This wasn't in the script.
42:56You read the script?
42:58You've got to listen to me, mate. You've got to get off the stage.
43:02Wait a minute. Aren't you that window-cleaner fella?
43:05Well, yeah, yeah, but I can explain all that, honest.
43:08How?
43:10We're having a lot of trouble with that window.
43:14Lovely surprise.
43:24Nice one, mate.
43:26Quite sorry we have to chuck you out, don't you think?
43:32Go on.
43:35CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
43:41Hello, Mr Valentine.
43:43Sally, how did you find me?
43:50Will you listen?!
43:53There's a bloke in here with a gun!
43:59Three blokes, actually.
44:02What are you doing here?
44:04I came to watch.
44:06What?
44:08Don't mind me.
44:10Sorry, does someone watching make you nervous?
44:14I'm rather the same when I'm working, actually.
44:17Sally, leave now.
44:19Once I've killed him, you mustn't be found here.
44:22Doesn't matter, really, because once you have killed him,
44:25I'm going to confess I hired you to do it.
44:29Where's Valentine?
44:31Look, if I knew, I'd tell you, wouldn't I?
44:33I mean, right now, I'd tell you where my granny hired her jewels,
44:36but I don't know. Honest!
44:38Wah!
44:45Dear me, Sally Hardcastle,
44:48is this your big plan to stop me?
44:53You kill him,
44:55I confess to murder and go to prison.
44:59You won't confess, you know.
45:01Once he's dead, once there's nothing you can do,
45:04you won't give up your liberties so easily.
45:07I'm doing only what I have to do.
45:10I know your lives would be better if this man were dead,
45:14so I am honour-bound to do you this service.
45:21In a sense, it's none of your business.
45:25See, the thing is, I'm extra sensitive to pain.
45:32Was that it, then?
45:34Do you know, I'm beginning to believe you.
45:37I thought you had a kind face as soon as I saw you.
45:40He'd have whimpered it by now.
45:42Too bleeding right, I would.
45:44Stick him in the boot. We can dump him somewhere later.
45:47Did you go anywhere near the marina?
45:51Hold on, I won't be able to breathe in here.
45:54Michael, fix his breathing for him.
46:01If you can take a bit of constructive criticism,
46:04I think you've put me in the wrong place, mate.
46:16Michael, I think you'd better drop the gun.
46:25APPLAUSE
46:31Ladies and gentlemen, a technical fault has developed.
46:34Please remain in your seats.
46:40You've no idea where he is? No, none at all.
46:43All I know is he's got a gun and he's a pro.
46:46Listen, everyone.
46:49You phoned the police.
46:51What are you going to do?
46:53Sally, you phoned the police.
46:55I had to.
46:57They have enough on me to put me away for the rest of my life.
47:00So? Run.
47:02And leave you here to point the way?
47:05Or take you with me to slow me down?
47:09I'm afraid, Sally Hartcastle,
47:12you've left me with no option.
47:16No, you can't. Please, don't do...
47:19I'm sorrier than I can tell you.
47:21You can't do this.
47:23Someone will hear. Someone will...
47:29You're unabound, Valentine.
47:31You owe me, remember?
47:34Thomas and I saved your life.
47:36You can't expect that to count now.
47:39Depends on you.
47:41Depends on whether you're the kind of man who pays his debts.
47:44Or do you only pay your debts when they don't hurt?
47:48You tell me you're a man of honour.
47:50That's what all this crap was about.
47:52Well, right now, Valentine,
47:54you just look scared with a gun.
47:57So, really, it comes down to this, Valentine.
48:02Can you kill someone you owe?
48:12If I'm the devil, Sally Hartcastle,
48:15what does that make you?
48:27It's all right. You can relax.
48:29I've been...
48:31disarmed.
48:36She got me.
48:41Do you know something?
48:44Do you know something?
48:46In all the years I've been helping the police with their enquiries,
48:50that's the first time I've helped the police with their enquiries.
48:53I can't believe you did that.
48:56Did what?
48:58With Adams.
49:00Well, we did save his life.
49:02After putting it in danger.
49:04No, that was an accident.
49:06I know, but ask him to refund our theatre tickets.
49:10Sally, that was 20 quid.
49:12Oh.
49:16Listen, as we're here, I was just wondering...
49:19Wondering what?
49:21Well, now, don't get angry or anything like.
49:23What?
49:25We couldn't just pop back and pick up those alarm clocks, could we?
49:28Thomas!
49:43Hey, my lady
49:46Tell me what you see
49:51Reflections of my life
49:54Are telling me
49:58You've got the money
50:01And you've got the time
50:03I'll be the reason
50:05I'll be your wine
50:07This feeling's getting stronger
50:09Stay lucky and free
50:14Listen, girl
50:16Listen to what I say
50:18Stay lucky
50:20Stay lucky
50:22Don't look back
50:24We're going all the way
50:26Stay lucky
50:29You've got the logic
50:31You've got the heart
50:33Now we're together
50:35Let's make a new start
50:37This feeling's getting stronger
50:39Stay lucky and free
50:43Stay lucky and free
