In this compelling video, we analyze the recent hydraulic failure incident involving an Air India Express flight from Trichy to Sharjah. With 141 passengers aboard, the aircraft faced a critical situation shortly after takeoff, prompting an emergency landing. We are joined by Capt. S.S. Panesar, former Director of Flight Safety for Indian Airlines, who shares his expert insights on the implications of such malfunctions. Together, we discuss the broader issues surrounding airline safety standards, maintenance protocols, and what this means for the future of air travel. Don’t miss this in-depth exploration of a crisis that could affect every traveler!

00:00Hello and welcome to this special broadcast on One India.
00:05Captain S.S.
00:06Panesar is there.
00:07He is the former director of flight safety for Indian Airlines and we are talking to
00:11him because of the flight that started off from Trichy in Tamil Nadu towards Sharjah
00:18had to circle over Trichy and the Tamil Nadu region for at least two and a half hours because
00:25the hydraulic failure was there.
00:28Captain Panesar, help us understand what is the hydraulic failure and what happens
00:33to the plane when it happens during takeoff.
00:38See on a Boeing 737, there are three hydraulic systems.
00:41They work for different, for landing gear, flaps and braking and all that.
00:49If there's a leak of hydraulic system, I think captain has taken a right decision to land
00:55back at Trichy and since the flight is a long flight and landing at Sharjah with a
01:01snag and all that would have been much difficult for the airline to send the staff for repairs
01:06and all that to Sharjah.
01:07No, he landed back, done a good decision.
01:10But how this leak has taken place, they have to investigate why this leak has taken place.
01:15Did the captain go check, you know, when they, before takeoff, they go around the aircraft
01:22and if there's any leak, they can observe leak also.
01:24If the pilot did not observe the leak, that means something happened after takeoff and
01:30some system and that's all the hydraulic leaked out.
01:34Sometimes the system goes out, you cannot even take the gear up.
01:37You can't take the gear up, please don't go up and you have some further emergency.
01:42It'll be very serious.
01:43Now, I appreciate this decision to land back at Trichy to save the, you know, airline functioning.
01:51They have to send the staff to Sharjah with all the mail and material.
01:55It'll take a long time and then the Sharjah investigation board have intervened.
01:59It would have delayed a number of days for the flight to be released.
02:03But since he landed back at Trichy, he's done a good job.
02:06I appreciate that.
02:07But now the only, they have to investigate how this leak took place.
02:11It is not a very common thing, but it has happened earlier also, a number of times when
02:18the hydraulic leaks take place.
02:20And the pilot has to land back immediately as per the checklist.
02:25Right.
02:26Also, sir, help us understand, the pilot decided to circle around the Indian airspace for two
02:33and a half hours.
02:35We have been told that it is because of the fuel that it was carrying since the time of
02:40takeoff.
02:41What does that mean?
02:42How does that work?
02:43Sir, I tell you, every aircraft is entitled for a particular takeoff weight, considering
02:49the airport, temperature, winds and all that.
02:52But if you take off with a maximum weight, you are not supposed to land with the maximum
02:57landing weight because landing weight, you have to reduce it.
03:00Otherwise, it will be well seated, tyre burst and so many things can happen to reduce the
03:06weight of the aircraft.
03:07So they have to dump the fuel, you know, if they can, some aircraft have the facility
03:12to dump the fuel so that the weight of the aircraft is reduced to a landing weight, maximum
03:17landing weight, and then he can land safely.
03:20But if there is a very serious emergency, he can land with a maximum landing weight
03:23also with the extra cautious, smooth landing and with a proper speed and all that.
03:29But he must have been hoping to dump the fuel or waste the fuel by flying over so that the
03:35landing weight comes within the limits and all that.
03:39For the safe landing weight, circle around to either to dump the fuel or to use the fuel.
03:45If there's no dumping facility, like big aircraft, they have a dumping facility, you
03:50can dump the fuel, whatever you like it, to bring the landing weight within the limit.
03:56If you take off with the takeoff weight, it is not the same landing weight, landing weight
04:00is much less than the takeoff weight.
04:02Absolutely.
04:03After covering that distance, the fuel is also used.
04:07Captain Pane, sir, as you rightly mentioned that the pilot did the right thing by landing
04:13in India, in Trichy itself.
04:17We have just been told that flight AI613, captain was Daniel Pellissa, a woman captain,
04:24sir.
04:25And kudos to her, as you just mentioned.
04:29And what is the kind of training or pressure handling technique that the pilots must be
04:35undergoing?
04:36She took off, she realized that the front wheel is not closing down, the hydraulic problem
04:40is there, then she had to make a lot of decisions.
04:44Yes, you see, all these emergency procedures are listed in a booklet, which is a quick
04:50reference handbook.
04:51There also on a computer also, any emergency takes place, he has to follow the checklist.
04:57And as per checklist, if his takeoff weight is more than the landing weight, he has to
05:02consume fuel or dump fuel to make the aircraft landing weight.
05:06And all these training has been given to the pilot during the simulator training, and
05:11flying training.
05:12And by definitely technical circular pilots are given enough training to land with a maximum
05:20landing weight.
05:21But if there is a greater emergency, like if an engine also fails, then he can land
05:26with a maximum landing weight, maximum takeoff weight also.
05:30And he has to land very cautiously, so the tires don't burst.
05:34So he can land with a maximum takeoff weight also.
05:37But it is better if we dump the fuel or use the fuel and land within the landing weight
05:43limit.
05:44So there's no further damage on the tires and all that by after landing.
05:47Right.
05:48Captain S. S. Bhanesar, thank you so much for talking to us and taking time out at such
05:53a short notice.
05:54We really appreciate it.
05:55And your inputs are most welcome, act as an awareness thing also for our viewers.
06:01Thank you, sir.
06:02Don't miss out.
