00:00The 118th edition of Il Lombardia held on a 255km course from Bergamo to Como.
00:13Taddy Pagaccia on the start line in his world championship kit, Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel
00:19also there and many other riders looking to win the final monument of this year's season.
00:25The start line all smiles and the riders rolled out at 10.35 in the morning in beautiful
00:32conditions.
00:34The flag was dropped after an early neutralised section and immediately loads of attacks started
00:40to form.
00:44Early in the race many riders looked to try and set up some sort of breakaway.
00:49Particularly active were the teams of the likes of Ineos Grenadiers and Jaco Alula.
00:57In the initial pre-Alps climbs before we got to the likes of Valpiana, there were many
01:02many moves.
01:03At the front, Mati Moric was keen to get involved in the action and he eventually ended up in
01:09the lead group.
01:15Other riders who broke away included Dani Martinez of the Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe team.
01:23Also Eddie Dunbar who had just recently finished well in La Vuelta with two stage victories.
01:33As the early climbs started to make some legs hurt, Taddy Pagaccia was quite comfortable
01:38at the front.
01:40Only 21 riders broke away and started to build their leads.
01:49Their lead went from one minute to two minutes.
01:55Driven along by the squads at the front and behind, eventually UAE team members decided
02:00when the gap got to four minutes that they had to make sure they brought the gap back.
02:08In the breakaway group, Zandra Morica and the other riders really started to fight the
02:14peloton but the work done by UAE team emirates really started to bring the breakaway back.
02:23First it was Rafael Maica and then the rest of the squad.
02:27On to the climb of Madonna del Ghisalo and the breakaway's lead started to tumble.
02:34Madonna del Ghisalo is one of the key climbs in world bike racing.
02:41After they went over the top of that climb and headed towards the next climb of the day
02:46which was Colma di Salmano, the race really started to open up.
02:50Open GC contenders and here he comes, there they are, the catch, the attack, the script
02:56is written, it's pre-ordained, Pagaccia goes.
03:02Some would say that this was an early time to make a breakaway but after his performance
03:07in the world championships everyone knew that this could be the moment the race was won.
03:14On Salmano, Pagaccia started to open up his lead, building it to over one minute by the
03:20time he reached the descent.
03:23The chaser was the Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quick-Step, behind him
03:28Lennart van Eetveldt and Enric Mas.
03:32They were eventually joined by Pavel Sivakov, Pagaccia made his way on to the final climb
03:40of the day at San Fermo della Battaglia and there was nothing that anybody could do.
03:47As Pagaccia brings the curtain down triumphantly on 2024, a year that will be forever his year
03:57and in Lombardia his race, his story, history, Tadej Pagaccia closes it all out, comes to
04:08a halt, takes a bow, lifts his bike aloft, he is one of the greatest, if not the greatest
04:15racer this sport has ever seen.
04:18Remco Evenepoel, very emotional on the finish line in second place and a fantastic third
04:39place for the Italian Giulio Cecconi, but the man of the day, Tadej Pagaccia celebrates
04:45his fourth win in Il Lombardia after six hours of racing.
