00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're counting down our picks for the 20 best
00:15video games all about ghosts in the supernatural. Be prepared for plenty of
00:19fun and spooky spectral shenanigans. Before we begin, we publish new content
00:33all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to be notified about
00:37our latest videos. The Haunted Mansion I mean come on it's a
00:49game about Disney's The Haunted Mansion. Of course it's going to be all about
00:52ghosts and supernatural shenanigans. This 3D adventure game sees you step into the
00:57bumbling shoes of Zeke, a quirky chap who is searching for a caretaker job, one
01:01that leads him to the eponymous mansion. This game is bursting at the seams with
01:06all things supernatural, from the 999 spooky specters, to creepy spiders, to
01:11howling banshees, to singing statues, and so much more. The Haunted Mansion is a
01:16solid go-to game if you are looking for a ghostly fix. The Vanishing of Ethan
01:27Carter The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a
01:37mysterious and often spooky first-person detective-driven adventure game. The game
01:42revolves around paranormal investigator Paul Prospero, who has special instincts
01:46into the other side. Upon returning to his hometown of Red Creek Valley, he
01:50learns about a boy, Ethan, who has sadly gone missing under strange supernatural
01:55occurrences. Your time playing this game will center on exploration of the
01:58gorgeously haunting open areas, in tangent with using Paul's paranormal
02:02powers to solve the many mysteries at play here.
02:05Ghostwire Tokyo
02:22Ghostwire Tokyo is a strange blend of magic slash supernatural first-person
02:27shooting and open-world exploration. This ghostly tale, taking place in a haunted
02:32Tokyo setting, sees most of the city's population vanishing due to some
02:36nefarious occult business. While the game does lean a bit too much on the
02:40exhausted open-world tropes many of us are getting tired of seeing, it's still
02:44held aloft by the immersive paranormal powers of protagonist Akito, the game's
02:49spooky narrative, the creepy, if often repetitive enemy types, and a plethora of
02:53fun supernatural upgrades.
03:01Scooby-Doo Night of 100 Frights
03:10The Mystery Inc. gang find themselves at Mystic Manor after being summoned by one
03:15of Daphne's pals, Holly Graham. It's here that the Scooby gang get captured, and it's
03:19now up to Scooby-Doo to save the day, while putting a stop to the dastardly
03:23deeds going on behind the scenes. This beloved 2002 game is just dripping with
03:28ghostly slash supernatural vibes and ambiance all around, all within a great
03:33cartoony context, like you are playing through an episode of the show. Scouring
03:37the myriad spooky locales while pummeling ghosts, ghouls, and other goons
03:41is a real treat. Plus, the more abilities and Scooby snacks you hoover up, the more
03:45you get to explore Mystic Manor and its diverse zones.
03:53Layers of Fear
04:06The first-person horror walking sim adventure game Layers of Fear is so
04:11darn creepy, offering up endless frightful moments, especially given how
04:15the Victorian gothic mansion you find yourself in warps and twists the more
04:19you dive deeper into its artistically driven horrors. Stepping into the shoes
04:24of a very much down-and-out artist who seeks to paint his harrowing and ominous
04:28magnum opus, it quickly becomes clear that this mansion is unbelievably
04:32haunted. Layers of Fear is a game hell-bent on immersing you in its
04:36terrifying atmosphere, interlaced with quieter, subtle, more bespoke moments to
04:40ensure that you are always on edge. Then, when you do encounter a ghostly visage
04:45as you explore the labyrinthian mansion, your hairs will quickly stand on end.
04:49Layers of Fear is a beautifully haunting canvas for all things that go bump in
04:53the night.
05:02Geist
05:10Geist is one of those incredibly rare Nintendo-published mature games and is a
05:14real treat on the Nintendo GameCube, a game that blends ghostly possession
05:18powers with intense first-person shooting action. Geist, which means ghost
05:22in German, is equal parts inventive and deeply engaging. Our protagonist, John
05:27Ramey, heads off to France in order to rescue an undercover agent. However,
05:31things very quickly go awry and John finds himself possessed by a nefarious
05:36spirit. John is now able to leap into the bodies of others, and heck, even inanimate
05:40objects, in order to have them do his bidding, which leads into the core
05:44moment-to-moment gameplay. Geist is a stylish game that, while not really all
05:48that scary, has plenty of supernatural elements to make it worth your while.
05:59Infliction Extended Cut
06:11Infliction Extended Cut is one of the very best horror games around that
06:15barely anyone talks about. Now, this is really unfortunate, since this
06:19demonically-infused first-person horror experience is brimming at the seams with
06:23ghostly encounters and horrifying supernatural occurrences. Taking place in
06:27a rather mundane suburban home, Infliction sees you play as a husband
06:31who has let dark, ominous, and evil powers invade him and his home, causing him to
06:35murder his wife in dark fashion. This might just be one of the most unnerving
06:40horror games around, mostly down to impeccable audio design where every
06:44single ghostly whisper, moan, and scream embeds itself in your subconscious, as
06:49you seek to exorcise the vengeful spirit from the home. Infliction will surely
06:53stick in your mind long after the credits roll.
07:06Murdered Soul Suspect
07:14What immediately sets Murdered Soul Suspect apart from other third-person
07:24adventure games is its unique, spooky, and moody fictionalized Salem,
07:27Massachusetts setting. This game's ghostly premise smacks you in the face
07:31right from the get-go, as we see Detective Ronan O'Connor get murdered by
07:35the infamous Salem Bell Killer. But Ronan pops out of his body after his
07:39unfortunate murder in order to solve the mystery of the Bell Killer, at the behest
07:43of his deceased wife. Ronan's non-corporeal form allows him to glimpse
07:47behind the veil in order to solve supernatural cases, and unravel the many
07:52hauntings of Salem with plenty of wits, guile, and stealth.
08:13Ghost Hunter
08:222003's Ghost Hunter is an odd duck of a game, one that feels like a product of
08:26its time, but not in a bad way. Equal parts third-person action horror and
08:30campy B-movie schlock, Ghost Hunter is sort of like a more hard-boiled version
08:34of Ghostbusters. Lazarus Jones accidentally unleashes a host of
08:38imprisoned ghosts, much to the chagrin of a sentient computer deep in the bowels
08:42of Montse High. Thus begins Lazarus's supernatural adventure to battle ghosts,
08:47hoover them up, and ultimately restore the balance that he threw off. Ghost
08:51Hunter is definitely janky and rough around the edges, but what it lacks in
08:54gameplay perfection, it makes up for in quirky 2000s era comedy action horror.
09:07Control
09:12Remedy really do know a thing or two about crafting a surreal otherworldly
09:22cinematic experience. While the Al and Wake games certainly have a lot of
09:26ghostly supernatural stuff going on, for our money it's Control that really
09:30takes the haunted cake. Set in the Federal Bureau of Control, a governmental
09:34agency that studies paranormal phenomena, we play as new director recruit Jesse
09:38Faden. It's here in the Bureau, specifically the oldest house, that Jesse
09:42learns of the dark designs at play. However, she is aided by her powerful
09:46weapons and abilities. By finding objects of power, Jesse can wield
09:50supernatural powers to aid her in her battle against the Hiss. Control
09:53perfectly blends paranormal ideas with governmental intrigue to great effect.
09:57It's action-packed, brimming with creepy moments, and jam-packed with mysteries to
10:01unravel.
10:09Detention
10:22For a more somber, poignant, and melancholic, yet still terrifying
10:26supernatural tale, then look no further than 2017's Detention. Detention's
10:31artistic, atmospheric horror centers around Taiwanese martial law during the
10:351960s. The game takes place in a haunted school, where a pair of students
10:39unwittingly find themselves trapped by oppressive otherworldly beings. The
10:44Taiwanese cultural influences on this game ensures it's wholly unique from any
10:48other similar 2D horror adventures. It's a game steeped in darkness, rituals,
10:52curses, and feelings of isolation and dread. Detention is one of those
10:56methodical, slower-paced horrors that scares players via its supernatural
11:01occurrences, as well as its overarching martial law-slash-governmental-regime
11:05themes.
11:14The Darkside Detective
11:24Now, switching gears to a more light-hearted tone, set within the
11:27parameters of a pixel-art point-and-click adventure game is The Darkside
11:30Detective. This game is just so darn charming, mixing quirky, campy humor with
11:35engaging, challenging puzzles and exploration. Clearly inspired by the likes
11:39of Twin Peaks, The Darkside Detective tasks you to play as Detective Francis
11:43McQueen. Instead of taking on traditional cases, Detective McQueen and his
11:47partner Dooley work for the neglected Darkside Division. The duo is tasked
11:52with picking up the paranormal cases, no matter how outlandish, creepy, or
11:55absurd they are. With fun play-on-words cases such as Malice in Wonderland,
12:00Disorient Express, and Poltergeist, this gem of a game will sink its paranormal
12:04hooks into you right away.
12:18The Mortuary Assistant
12:26Gosh darn it, this game is a real, real doozy, easily one of the scariest games
12:31around. I mean, I guess it should come as no surprise, given that you play as a
12:35newly hired Mortuary Assistant at Riverfield's Mortuary, who just so happens
12:40to be haunted by demons as soon as she steps foot in the accursed location. The
12:44cornucopia of demonic entities in this game will constantly keep you on edge as
12:48you go about your mundane, something I say in very heavy quotes, mortuary work
12:52with the various bodies. It's the complete randomness of scares in the game
12:56that will make it stand out, well, that and the fact that many of the horrors
13:00appear for just a brief moment and in the corner of your vision, making you
13:03question if you actually saw an entity there stalking you. Trying to figure out
13:07the correct body, the correct demonic sigil, and the correct supernatural
13:11tendencies is challenging and incredibly unnerving.
13:23Oxenfree series
13:38Night School Studios' Oxenfree and Oxenfree 2 Lost Signals are paranormally
13:42drenched 2.5D adventure games that never seem to get just enough time in the
13:47spotlight, despite being polished and well-crafted. The Oxenfree games are just
13:51as much about relationships as they are about paranormal disturbances. The games
13:55mostly revolve around branching dialogue, exploration, and environmental
13:59deduction, specifically when it comes to radio frequencies and supernatural
14:02portals. The way these games weave intricate narratives, strong character
14:06arts, and mesmerizing environmental puzzle gameplay is nothing short of top
14:10notch. Oh, and that art style? Yeah, it's really darn good too.
14:21Ghost Trick Phantom Detective
14:31What a truly wacky game Ghost Trick Phantom Detective is. Have you ever
14:35wanted to play as an amnesiac ghost who must figure out his own death while
14:39solving oodles of creative and crafty puzzles along the way? Well, if you
14:43happen to answer yes to that hyper-specific question, then this game is for
14:47you. As Sissel, you can switch back and forth between the real world and
14:51a ghost world in order to gather evidence, discover new info, come up with
14:55puzzle solutions, and hopefully save some lives along the way. Sissel can
14:59utilize his supernatural powers for both his advantage and to help others he
15:03encounters. The way this game either hinders or helps Sissel's movement and
15:07interaction, depending on what world you're in, is ingenious and fun. So what
15:11are you waiting for? Get out there and solve the many conundrums.
15:22Ghostbusters The Video Game 2009
15:37I mean, could we really have an entire list about ghosts and the supernatural
15:41in video games without at least mentioning a Ghostbusters game? I think not. 2009's
15:45aptly named Ghostbusters The Video Game is a lot of fun. Combining action
15:49adventure with third-person shooting elements, this game centers around a new
15:53recruit to the ghost-hunting squad. The game features oodles upon oodles of
15:57paranormal shenanigans to contend with across its many stages. Now, what really
16:01helps this game stand out is the fact that many Ghostbusters cast members lend
16:05their voices and likenesses, so it really does feel like you are playing through
16:09one of the fantastic films.
16:10Phasmophobia
16:27The first-person multiplayer ghost-hunting title really took the world by storm when
16:31it was released, mostly because many streamers and YouTubers were quick to
16:35jump on the supernatural bandwagon. Teamwork is critical in Phasmophobia, as
16:39you and your paranormal pals suit up, pick your ghost-hunting tools and
16:43equipment, learn about the haunted locale, uncover the mystery behind the type of
16:47supernatural entity doing the haunting, and finally, hopefully, trying your
16:51darnedest to catch said entity, be it a demon, a spirit, a poltergeist, or some
16:56other creepy variant. The breadth of content in Phasmophobia is staggering. No
17:00two paranormal investigations will ever feel the same, with some of them
17:04becoming increasingly terrifying, while others just devolve into pure comical
17:08madness. It's good times.
17:18Fear Series
17:30Fear, or First Encounter Assault Recon if you want to get fancy about it, is a
17:34paranormal-infused intense first-person shooter that is just as impressive today
17:39as it was way back in 2005, especially because of its solid gunplay, perfectly
17:44scripted scares, and highly intelligent AI. The supernatural star of the show in
17:49the Fear games is the uber-creepy Alma, a hauntingly menacing ghostly force to be
17:53reckoned with. Her prominence in the first Fear game, as well as its excellent
17:57sequel, Fear 2 Project Origin, is simply sublime. Unfortunately, Fear 3 wasn't
18:02all that great and went for more of a by-the-numbers FPS experience. But those
18:07first two games are an unholy blend of gritty action shooter and full-on horror
18:11that definitely shouldn't be missed.
18:21Luigi's Mansion Series
18:33You could really take your pick of any of the Luigi's Mansion games and you would
18:36have a good time. The OG Luigi's Mansion from the GameCube set the stage for what
18:40would become a beloved family-friendly supernatural series. Luigi's first
18:45ominous foray into the titular mansion was so unique and refreshing. Instead of
18:49platforming around like his brother does, Luigi dons the Poltergust in order to
18:53clear out the ghostly presence. Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, and its Switch HD
18:57version, as well as Luigi's Mansion 3 would iterate and build upon the OG
19:01formula to great success, with Luigi's Mansion 3 really, really standing out on
19:06the Nintendo Switch. The third iteration sees Luigi at the Last Resort Hotel in
19:10order to save his pals from nefarious baddies. Moving between the creatively and
19:15intricately designed hotel floors provides so much fun as you, once again,
19:19hoover up spooky specters with the Poltergust. But this time around, you
19:23aren't alone. You have Gooigi by your side to aid you in your ghostly adventure.
19:31Fatal Frame Series
19:45Often revered in the same vein as the Resident Evil or Silent Hill series, the
19:49Fatal Frame franchise is a stone-cold classic, especially if you fancy yourself
19:54some terrifying Japanese horror. The original 2001 Fatal Frame, also known as
19:58Project Zero, Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly, and Fatal Frame III The
20:02Tormented are the entries being highlighted here, since this original
20:06trilogy is still the best of the bunch, hands down. Taking place in various
20:10Japanese-inspired haunted mansions and houses, shrines, and forested area,
20:14amongst other spooky locales, the Fatal Frame games quickly became the talk of
20:18the town due to the camera obscura. You see, instead of shooting or pummeling
20:22baddies like you would in some similar survival horror games, in Fatal Frame,
20:26you use the camera obscura to snap photos of ghostly visages in order to
20:31cleanse and destroy their harrowing presence. Getting up close and personal
20:35with these ominous specters as you try to snap the perfect Fatal Frame was,
20:39and still is, incredibly scary.
20:41So, do you agree with our picks for this list? There are a staggering variety of
20:58games that feature ghosts in The Supernatural. Which ones do you think are
