00:00Welcome back everyone is Charlie I had a chance to see Joker 2.
00:09This will be my review and is absolutely not what any of you are expecting from a sequel
00:15to that first movie.
00:17There's so much to say it's gonna go down is one of the more controversial DC movies
00:20the last several years for a couple reasons.
00:23Mostly that the sequel is such a radical departure from that first movie in totally not what
00:28you're expecting from a DC movie mostly in a negative context, but there are some good
00:32things to say about the movie like there's some good things in there.
00:35So will break it all down.
00:37If you're brand-new to the channel be sure to subscribe to get all the videos were in
00:40the middle of the Batman penguin episodes not connected to Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.
00:46This is still firmly meant to exist in a separate universe from the first movie more that later
00:50in the video because one of the other more controversial things about this movie and
00:54probably the thing that most people will be talking about this weekend was the ending
00:58like there's a lot to talk about the movie in general, but most people will pride just
01:01be talking about the ending.
01:03Even though this movie is meant to be a direct sequel to the last movie.
01:07The vibe is completely different from that first movie is almost like he wanted to make
01:11another movie with the characters, but not really make a sequel to the first movie just
01:16something set in the same universe with the same characters like we do something that's
01:19a completely different genre that's not necessarily sequel, but kind of a sequel at the same time.
01:25So let me ask you first big thing if you're going into this movie.
01:28How do you feel about jukebox musicals or just musicals in general.
01:33If you are a huge fan of them.
01:35Like if you love musicals your huge fan of the music of Lady Gaga her performances you
01:39will probably enjoy this movie a lot, but if you're more core DC comics fan like your
01:44traditional Batman fan you're going to this movie expecting to see something more traditional
01:49inside the universe.
01:50This meant to follow the natural evolution of what happens after the events of the first
01:53movie more in the tone of the first movie.
01:56Maybe you're just interested to see what the future of that Joker character was going to
02:00be how he grow what kind of Batman lore we would see in the universe in the future.
02:05Then you will be sorely disappointed in this film in your day will be immeasurably ruined.
02:10You will find none of that stuff going on in this new movie.
02:14Now is not quite is over the top and unhinged is megalopolis is there's a lot of discussion
02:19going on about that now to just because the screenings totally separate movie not connected
02:22to the Joker, but also just one of these really wild films and you wonder how got made in
02:27the first place like what is going on here in one of those movies like Joker to that
02:32a small subset of people will really love, but most people will be kind of negative about
02:37like what what is going on.
02:39Like I said, you could barely call this movie a sequel in that it's the same character after
02:43the events of the first movie dealing with the consequences of what he did, but it's
02:47more of a psychological exploration of the character through a lot of music singing dancing
02:52performances big musical set pieces that you also on the trailers you can even call this
02:57movie more of a musical cross with a courtroom drama because so much of the movie takes place
03:02in that actual courtroom you see the trailers were Jokers facing trial over the events of
03:06the first movie without getting into any spoilers just because it's early before the movies
03:10come out the ending felt like it was written by some random unhinged Twitter user or like
03:15some crazy reddit user this online way too much like if you've ever dipped into the replies
03:20to Hugh Jackman or Ryan Reynolds Twitter post you see that the crazy things that people
03:24post it's almost like they borrowed some of the ideas for the ending from those people.
03:29So yes, we will be talking a lot about that this weekend for bad and for good like wow
03:33it was really amazing that they tried something like that, but what were they thinking probably
03:37the best thing I can say about it is and how unexpected it was.
03:41So if you are looking forward to like a crazy twist yes crazy twist, but overall I feel
03:45like the reaction is going to be negative I would've rather seen Joaquin Phoenix's character
03:50evolve into more of a comic book like Joker character.
03:54But that's me I'm more of a traditional DC comics rated fan I go to DC movies expecting
03:58something more in the tone of what you would think of when you think of DC movies.
04:02There are a couple good things about the movie that we can point out Todd Phillips Joaquin
04:06Phoenix to a great job of exploring who Arthur is what he thinks he is what he thinks of
04:11himself him trying to own his own weirdness as the Joker identity which he was ashamed
04:16of throughout the first movie everyone remembers all the we live in a society memes this movie
04:22takes that meme and tries to turn into like a bigger statement in the way that the first
04:26movie did Joker being Joker and loving it having been made that way because society
04:31made him like that everybody is awful these days.
04:35It's enough to make anyone crazy.
04:37He is entirely a product of the society of the Gotham City of this universe.
04:42The problem with that is that it feels like a bit of a rehash of the themes of the first
04:46movie like the first movie established that pretty successfully Lady Gaga gives great
04:51performances she wrote a whole album based on the movie called Harlequin she carries
04:55most the musical numbers that they do together as you would expect.
04:58So if you like her music you will enjoy that aspect of the movie for those you worry that
05:03Lady Gaga would have taken over the movie pulling the story away from Joker the actual
05:07main character that didn't really happen the way they cut the movie down.
05:11She's not nearly in this movie as much as you would think from the actual trailers.
05:15She barely has anything to do outside of the big musical numbers they wound up cutting
05:20a lot of her scenes from the trailers that happens in all big movies where you see a
05:25ton of trailer scenes that don't wind up in the actual movie.
05:28We can talk more about those during my Easter eggs video Joaquin Phoenix has performed before
05:33if you didn't see him and walk the line.
05:34He played Johnny Cash in a biopic based on his life.
05:38He was great during that.
05:40But when it comes to big sweeping musical numbers like you see in the trailers they
05:43do in this movie he admittedly wasn't nearly up to the same task is Lady Gaga.
05:48So she does carry a lot of that stuff in the film, but I think the Todd Phillips did a
05:51good job of directing them in those performances so that you notice his weaknesses there quite
05:56as much probably one of the biggest criticisms is going to be late on the movie is and how
06:00much it tries to avoid any the notable comic book connections or the truth of a lot of
06:05the characters from the comics there some Batman related comic book references and references
06:10to the characters that they are portraying, but only occasionally in for most of the movie
06:14you have to think of it is more of like a musical where there are characters that are
06:18just borrowing the names from the Batman comics for instance Todd Phillips infamously did
06:23an interview before the movie came out explain that their Lady Gaga version of Harley Quinn
06:28would be absolutely nothing like the comics like you remember all that stuff you love
06:31about Harley Quinn from the comics.
06:33Now we're not doing any of that a really good comparison to make would be like Margot Robbie's
06:37version of Harley Quinn.
06:39She tries to be very true to the tone of the comic book version of the character doing
06:48Lady Gaga's version is the complete opposite of that.
06:55That's why her name in the movie is Lee in Joker's name is actually Arthur.
07:00So if you're going into this movie and you were disappointed that the first movie only
07:03lightly reference Batman or those comics you expecting more Batman related stuff the sequel
07:09goes even further away from the comics for most of the movie with a very bizarre choice
07:15for the ending all way till later this weekend after everyone has a chance to see it before
07:18we start talking about it more.
07:20So if you do get a chance to see the movie early please don't post spoilers for that
07:23on this video is almost like Todd Phillips took the freedom in the massive increase in
07:28budget that the studio gave him after the success of the first Joker movie made over
07:32a billion dollars.
07:34Then he turned around and gave the studio a huge middle finger like he really wanted
07:38to stick it to Warner brothers totally not caring about doing the traditional sequel
07:42that Warner brothers probably wanted him to do like could you make another movie just
07:45like the first movie he's like yeah there's no way I'm gonna do that and said he's gonna
07:49do the most unconventional unexpected and possibly disliked thing with the franchise
07:55this particular Joker franchise of Joaquin Phoenix's character.
07:59The only thing I've heard him say about turning the movie into more of a musical is that he
08:02felt like music was very important to the exploration of Arthur in his own mind the
08:07way he thinks of himself budget to hand it to Todd Phillips.
08:10He's at this point in his career where he's got enough success and more money that will
08:14ever be able to spend that he can basically give a middle finger to the studio and it
08:17seems like he actually doesn't really care about the traditional fan base for a lot of
08:21this stuff like the DC comics fan base or audience of the franchise of the first movie
08:25even though the movies can get clowned on a lot.
08:27I don't think he was trying to piss off people on purpose not for the pure sake of pissing
08:32people off.
08:33I think he just doesn't care if he makes people mad or disappoints people who are expecting
08:37something different from the Joker movies like something more akin to what you expect
08:41from a traditional Joker comic book the movie does leave room for a future Harley Quinn
08:46sequel about Lady Gaga's version in this universe potentially doing similar treatments for other
08:51Batman characters in this universe, but not Batman himself like please do not do a musical
08:56with Batman character.
08:57So if you really dig how this movie is so different from what people usually expect
09:02from selling Batman movies or just DC movies in general, then maybe you'll be excited to
09:06see more inside this universe, but personally I am totally fine with this being the last
09:11movie that Todd Haynes does in the DC universe and I will say after seeing it.
09:15I would've been totally okay if he had stopped after that first movie and not done the sequel
09:20like there were a lot of people who did not want them to make a sequel to begin with as
09:23the first movie came out the like great.
09:25This is awesome no more please you said everything that you need to say about this character
09:29with this one movie like I said a lot of the themes in this movie are rehashes of the themes
09:34of the first movie, but just to say some more positive things about it.
09:38The actual music the soundtrack musical numbers were all great.
09:41I don't watch a ton of musicals, but I was able to appreciate their performances visually
09:46the movie does look great like the cinematography is amazing in their set pieces look great
09:51and even if you don't like the story all the actors performances were S tier.
09:55I think most of the criticism about the actual characters will be about the way Todd Phillips
09:59wrote them and to be fair.
10:01He is a great director is just that as a DC movie fan like I make a lot of DC videos because
10:06I like DC comics related things you probably would've expected him to make something more
10:10akin to what a DC comics movie usually winds up being Myerly prediction is that the movie
10:15will do about $700 million maybe give or take a little bit, but is not going to make anywhere
10:20near as much money as the first movie like it will not make a billion dollars, especially
10:24after all the hardcore fans see opening weekend that love the first movie and then blasted
10:29online hurting word-of-mouth expecting it to be more like the first film when it is
10:33totally not like the first film once you do have a chance to see it post all your reactions
10:38in the comments below good or bad my video about the ending for the movie will post later
