00:00Hi there, it's cold out there already and it's turning even colder during the next few
00:05days. For the time being, we've got a lot of cloud. That cloud's come in on an Easterly
00:10airflow and the Easterly is also bringing some showers for the rest of the day into
00:14south-east Scotland, parts of northern England, into central and eastern England, one or two
00:18making their way into the Midlands, perhaps Wales as well, and the south-east of Northern
00:22Ireland. A few showers running along the English Channel coast in addition to the other showers
00:26but for many, actually those showers are fleeting and there'll be a lot of dry weather
00:31to the west and some brightness to the west of Scotland, for example, parts of west Wales,
00:37western fringes of England. Wherever you are though, it is going to feel cold. Temperatures
00:40at six to eight Celsius on the thermometer but when you add on the wind, it's going to
00:45feel more like low single figures. That wind particularly brisk in the east and then later
00:49on into the north as well. You can see the shift in the wind direction through Monday
00:55night across northern parts of the UK. That's going to bring some showers into the north
00:59of Scotland, falling as snow over the hills. But again, at this stage, most of the showers
01:04at lower levels tending to be of rain. Nevertheless, as the wind starts to change, we're going to
01:10develop some breaks in the cloud, so some central parts of the UK seeing those cloud
01:14breaks and where the cloud does break and where we get some shelter from the wind, temperatures
01:18dipping below freezing. Otherwise, it's low single figures for many as we begin Tuesday.
01:24Winds are going to get a lot colder than this over the next few days but for the time being
01:28on Tuesday, we've got this easterly changing to northerly airflow and as a result, we're
01:33going to pull in much colder air for the start of Wednesday. You can see that air coming
01:37straight from the Arctic. So we start off Tuesday chilly, yes, but actually with brighter
01:43skies on the whole, there'll be some decent cloud breaks. Still areas of cloud floating
01:48about but you can see the cloud is more broken compared with the last few days and especially
01:53across western and southern parts of the UK, we'll see some sunshine coming through.
01:58But there'll still be showers and this time because the winds are changing to northerlies,
02:02the showers are going to be affecting northern Scotland and down the North Sea coast, perhaps
02:06one or two through the Irish Sea coast but the ones along the English Channel tending
02:10to move into the Channel Islands and fade away later. That wind though is going to make
02:14it feel cold. Temperatures not far from Monday's but certainly for northern Scotland, the wind
02:20picking up through the day and with highs of 4 or 5 Celsius, it's probably going to
02:25feel more like 0 or 1 degree and it's going to send in even colder as that northerly drags
02:30the Arctic air southwards and as that happens, the showers increasingly turning to sleet
02:35and snow even at lower levels through Tuesday night. Down the North Sea coast for the time
02:41being as well as the Irish Sea coast, these are rain showers and for many inland, it's
02:46a clear night with more widespread frost I expect. So a cold start to Wednesday but
02:51by Wednesday, the air colder for snow at all levels across northern Scotland and the snow
02:55is going to build up, that's why there's a yellow warning for snow. 2 to 5 centimetres
02:59at lower levels in this warning area and 5 to 10 centimetres over hills so of course,
03:04it's early in winter, we're not used to it, that could cause some disruption. Elsewhere
03:08across the UK, plenty of bright skies later this week as that northerly arrives, less
03:12cloud cover, certainly less fog at night but we're going to see widespread frost and
03:18for some exposed coasts, sleet and snow showers.
