00:00I've just bought myself a new car, and it's this, a Mark 1 BMW X5 V8 from 2002.
00:08I recently drove one of these for a Car Wow video, liked it so much, thought I'd buy my own.
00:12Trouble is, they can be a bit unreliable and rather expensive to fix.
00:17So in this video, I'm going to take this car to one of the leading BMW specialists in the UK.
00:22They're going to assess it, take it for a test drive, and give me a bill for how much everything will cost to fix on it.
00:29This video could be very scary.
00:35I've come to BMW Park Lane Service Centre in Park Royal to get my X5 assessed by Mitch Costely.
00:42Now Mitch, what's your role here?
00:44I'm a master technician.
00:46A master technician. Do you have much experience with the E53 X5?
00:50I have. These things were out when my apprenticeship started, so I cut my teeth working on these things.
00:55And what I'm going to get you to do today, right, I want you to basically grade this car out of 10.
01:00I think I've bought a good one, but I'm not sure. It might be absolutely dreadful in your eyes.
01:04So I want you to walk around the exterior, grade the exterior.
01:06Then what we'll do, we'll go inside it, have a look at the quality of the inside, see what works and what doesn't work.
01:11And then we'll go underneath it, get on the ramp. There might be some things leaking.
01:14And then we'll go for a drive. And overall, you'll grade it out of 10.
01:17Not a problem.
01:18So BMW Park Lane is owned by BMW UK, isn't it?
01:21Yep, that's correct. We have the sales department on Park Lane.
01:24We have two service departments, one at Park Royal and another one south of the river in Badger.
01:27Okay, so this is basically their flagship service centre.
01:31And as you can hear, there's lots of work going on.
01:34So let's get to work ourselves now and go around this car and judge it.
01:38And let's start here at the front then.
01:39So you've got a little bit of discolouration in your headlights, a few dense stone chips in the bonnet.
01:43I mean, this is a 20-year-old car, right? So that's all fine.
01:46Yeah, to be honest, it's actually pretty good for the age.
01:50What about the headlights themselves? They are xenons, aren't they?
01:53They are xenons, yep. Factory xenons.
01:55Your front wing on this side is starting a bit of paint peeling, a bit of fading in the paint.
02:00A little dent there.
02:01What is causing this peeling? Do you know what? I'm going to film it with this camera here
02:05so you can see what Mitch and I can see.
02:08Here we go. So look at this. So what's going on there?
02:11Probably just a little bit of age. It may have had some work done previously and it's not been painted the best.
02:17But considering the age of it, something you'd potentially expect.
02:21How about the wheels? Look at the wheels.
02:23A little bit of corrosion and paint peeling on this rim.
02:26No big curbing or anything like that. So nothing of major concern.
02:30Tyres on the outside look alright. There's no bulge or impact damage there.
02:35What's the quality of the tyres like? Do I need new tyres? I was thinking of getting some.
02:38Maybe a little bit of feathering here. That's something we'll look at better when we've got the car in the air.
02:42We can rotate the tyre around and look at it fully.
02:45But from the outside, it looks okay for now.
02:49The paint looks a little bit dull. I was worried that it might be full of filler.
02:53Does it look like it is? Have you got any way of testing it?
02:56You can use the old school technique of a magnet.
02:58You've got a magnet.
02:59And it sticks.
03:00It sticks. Sticking is good.
03:03I wouldn't say there's anything of major concern there.
03:07There's no ripples down the side of it.
03:09And if you look at it down here, there may be a little issue with the gut there
03:14which would probably point towards maybe this being off before.
03:17Oh yeah, look. It wouldn't have come out of a factory like that, would it?
03:20No.
03:21So you think the door might have come off and someone's refitted it?
03:23The door or the wing might have had a little bit of work there.
03:25But again, if it has, it hasn't been the worst repair in the world.
03:29This rear wheel is worse than the front wheel. Look at that. It's a right old mess. Look at that.
03:33That's been repainted before, I think. You've got a bunch of corrosion and all in there.
03:38And what's going on here? It's like it's got the pox or something.
03:41Has it got monkey pox?
03:42It looks like the bumper's been off before.
03:44This trimmed like a black plastic, but this has been painted.
03:47Yeah, look, you can see the black paint on there.
03:50Why are they doing that? Isn't that overspray from that?
03:53It looks underneath like it has been possibly filled or primed.
03:57So you can see down here, it's got a little bit of the primer and stuff.
04:02So it looks like whoever did it may have done it deliberately, but I can't explain why.
04:07I can't understand why either.
04:09But this is all just general day-to-day living.
04:12It's a 20-year-old car, the odd knock and bang.
04:17That's the beauty of having an old car like this. I'm not so worried about it, not so precious.
04:21The rear bumper's definitely been off again. You can see the paint here.
04:23What is going on here?
04:25That looks like someone's used a house roller.
04:27Like you do your wall at home.
04:29Or a rattle can, but it's not.
04:32Is that Australian for spray paint, a rattle can?
04:34That's something I picked up over here.
04:36Really? Oh, OK, I'll shut up.
04:40But I would say that's either been done at home or a poor body shop.
04:43OK, so I've seen a lot of old X5s, these E53s, with cloudy light areas here.
04:49Yeah, when they get water and stuff in and the seals tend to leak.
04:52But you've got a little bit of darkness in there.
04:55This side doesn't look too bad. That side actually looks quite good.
04:59This one, yeah, you've got a little bit around the edge there, but...
05:02That darkness there?
05:04Yeah, I think it's a little bit, maybe a bit of water's got in there and then...
05:07Yeah, let's move on from that. Let's go around this side.
05:09As you can see, if you compare it to the other side, this side's actually still the plastic.
05:12Oh, yeah, that looks better, doesn't it?
05:14And all these panels are metal as well, there's no filler in there, you don't think?
05:17Not from the old magnet tests, but it's a very scientific way of doing things.
05:22Yeah, you can use a paint depth gauge to be more accurate, but we just want to do this quickly.
05:27And you can't tell just by the naked eye, your trained eye, Mitch,
05:31you can't see anything that looks untoward.
05:33Um, no, not particularly.
05:36You've got a mirror that's taped on.
05:38Oh, I didn't notice that. I really didn't notice that at all.
05:41So, I believe you've got folding mirrors, so that one's not going to work.
05:45Ah, I haven't tried the folding mirrors.
05:47We should try the folding mirrors when we get inside.
05:49Both rims on this side, pretty much similar to the other side, I think.
05:52Just peeling paint, I wouldn't be surprised if that's been repainted once upon a time in its life.
05:56Yeah, you can see a bit of feathering and cracking on the outer edges here.
06:00Yeah, these are quite old, these.
06:01So I'll tell you what, as we're going around, you're picking up bits and pieces,
06:04at the end of it, as well as getting a grade for the car,
06:06to find out how much it's going to cost to actually make this perfect for the age.
06:11Just notice that.
06:12Yep, you've got a...
06:13What's happened to the badge? They've changed the logo.
06:14It's not the blue propeller anymore, it's more the silver and partially white propeller.
06:18That is either a genuine badge that's been aged,
06:22or the fact it's kind of half lifted up makes me suspect it's had one put on.
06:27Really? So someone might have stolen a badge, and then they put a new one on cheap?
06:31Possibly come from eBay.
06:32So then overall, despite the badge, what do you grade the exterior of this car out of 10,
06:37considering it's a 20-year-old car?
06:39To be honest, I'd have to give it a 7.
06:41It's pretty good. It doesn't look like it's full of filler.
06:43There's no big dents, no scratches.
06:45It's actually a really, really nice car.
06:47I'll take that, and let's see if that theme continues on the inside.
06:50Before Mitch has a look at the inside of this car,
06:52I thought I'd tell you that, obviously, before I bought this thing,
06:56I did a vehicle history check with my friends at Car Vertical,
06:59and here's the report for this X5.
07:01So look, I think coming back on mileage, theft, accidents, finance.
07:05So it was all clean, so I was happy to buy it.
07:07Scanned down, I could check various MOT reports as well.
07:10A couple of things here and there.
07:12Maybe Mitch will pick one later, like problems with the suspension bushing.
07:16Will he notice those? We'll find out.
07:18Anyhow, I was very happy to see the mileage vouchers as well.
07:21So it's got 129,000 miles on the clock.
07:24The last MOT said it had 126,600 miles on the clock.
07:30It's always worth doing this because you never know what you're going to get.
07:32So here's a report from Car Vertical from a similar X5, an E53.
07:37It's actually the facelift version.
07:39And this one, whoop, it's got a warning for accident damage.
07:42Now, Car Vertical will actually show if it's been stolen
07:44or whether there's accident finance on it,
07:46but this one had accident damage.
07:48And if I scan down, sometimes with Car Vertical,
07:50you get photos showing the accident damage itself.
07:52Now, this is really handy because sometimes people repair the cars,
07:55put them back on the road, and you don't know that they've ever been damaged before.
07:58But if you've got some photos like this, you can see for yourself.
08:01So that will definitely put you off buying that particular car.
08:05Thankfully, mine had none of those issues, so I'm very pleased about that.
08:08If you're thinking about buying a used car and you want to check its history,
08:10check out my friends at Car Vertical, all right?
08:13And use the discount code WATSON10 for 10% off.
08:16There is a link in the description and the pinned comment for this video.
08:20Right, and Mitch, welcome to the inside of my beautiful X5.
08:22What do you think of it?
08:23First impression's pretty good.
08:24Dashboard's all in pretty good nick.
08:26Perfect, actually, for the age of it.
08:28On both sides, you see the fabric starting to peel up.
08:30Yeah, it's like wrinkled stockings, isn't it?
08:32Yeah, got it on both sides.
08:33That side, your passenger side's actually a little bit worse.
08:36Yeah, I really notice that when I'm looking over there.
08:38It really does my head in.
08:39Can I stretch that out quite easy, or is it a nightmare?
08:42You can.
08:43The trims will have to come off, and you can stretch it out, and then...
08:46This sounds like a nightmare.
08:47Let's move on.
08:48There's a little bit of goo around your cup holders in here.
08:51Yeah, it's not me.
08:52Hand sanitizer.
08:53Whenever you buy a used car, you don't know who's been in it.
08:55Always have some hand sanitizer.
08:56Not that I've got OCD after COVID or anything like that.
08:59Everything else, everything seems to work.
09:01You've still got your cigarette lighter.
09:03Yeah, essential for a non-smoker like me.
09:05Yeah, essential for everybody.
09:06It's just a surprise that a car at this age still has it there.
09:09Does it work, though?
09:10Let's have a look.
09:11That's looking very much like a no.
09:13No, not at the moment.
09:15Consumption, 18.3 miles to the gallon.
09:18All the pixels are still there.
09:19Normally on these...
09:20Everything works.
09:21Are they starting to fail, these little digital displays?
09:23They have always been temperamental.
09:25They fail and go blank.
09:27What is that noise?
09:28It does this noise.
09:29Has someone fitted some kind of Bluetooth system?
09:31When I turn it on, after about 30 seconds, it goes beep, like that.
09:34It looks like something non-genuine,
09:36because you've got your little microphone up there.
09:38Don't believe that is BMW standard equipment.
09:42No, it doesn't look it.
09:43Especially the one over there for the passenger.
09:45I do not believe it made those noises for me.
09:48No, it's a bit shocking.
09:49Your display works.
09:51It does work.
09:52It's got some spots.
09:54The fact it works and it's genuine, pretty good.
09:57It's got a telly.
09:58The telly doesn't work because the old signal has been cancelled for digital.
10:01That's what you get.
10:02A load of fuzz.
10:03It's one of those magic eye kind of images.
10:06So if you stare at it long enough, you will see a dolphin.
10:09Yes.
10:10Works perfect, both sides.
10:12Should be able to get it everywhere.
10:13Heated seats.
10:14They work.
10:15I can attest to that.
10:16So then, quite like in the front.
10:17Let's check out the back seats before you give a verdict on the interior.
10:20So, Mitch, welcome to the back seats of my X5.
10:22What do you think?
10:23Again, pretty good, Nick, for the age of the car.
10:25Leather's in good condition.
10:27It's a bit wrinkly, but not too bad, being expected.
10:30Don't have any wear marks around your edges.
10:32They tend to get wear there from people getting in and out and all that sort of stuff,
10:36especially with kids jumping in and out.
10:39This is actually really good.
10:40I mean, it's almost as new.
10:41They are really, really good.
10:42Pockets, which is a nice option in the back of the seat.
10:45Got some goodies in this one.
10:47Covers for your ISOFIX.
10:49Look, ISOFIX.
10:50I really like that.
10:51I can fit my daughter's child seat in there.
10:53I think it's quite an early vehicle to have ISOFIX.
10:55Really handy.
10:56What else have you got in here?
10:58Ooh.
10:59What's that?
11:00Remote control for a TV or something.
11:03Is it the original one for the TV?
11:04Did it come with a remote?
11:06I don't believe so.
11:07Not for the front one.
11:09You do have this trim here with your in and out and TV buttons.
11:13It's something I would have to look into to see whether it's genuine.
11:16Look, it's a bit wobbly.
11:17It is a bit wobbly.
11:18Again, raises a little bit of suspicion as to if it is genuine or not.
11:23But something you have to find out.
11:25But again, you've got a cigarette lighter.
11:26This one works.
11:27Oh, look, it's working.
11:28That's good.
11:29So if I need to smoke, I need to hop into the back.
11:31Yeah, yeah.
11:32It's good for the kids.
11:33I just noticed this, actually.
11:34Ah, a bit of history about the car.
11:36So it looks like it was auctioned off in June.
11:40Maybe June this year.
11:41We'll actually come to the service manual and stuff a bit later on.
11:45Because, yeah, I think that must have been June.
11:47And is this the disc for the CD, for the navigation CD or something?
11:53It's Finding Nemo.
11:54I would say that's better.
11:57It's probably more accurate.
11:58I can also see where that big beeping awful noise is from now that I'm in the back seats.
12:03Right, what is it?
12:04You have a massive big speaker screwed into the side under your glove box on the passenger front.
12:10So that's where that's coming from.
12:11Aftermarket Bluetooth, isn't it?
12:13Right, one last thing to show you is the boot.
12:15One that really annoys me about this car.
12:18Ah, your button doesn't work.
12:19Button doesn't work.
12:20I have to do it on the key or the button inside, yeah.
12:23Is this a common fault?
12:24Yeah, it's relatively well known.
12:26Is it easy to fix?
12:28Or hideously expensive?
12:29Probably a combination of both.
12:31This part operates, though.
12:33I love this bit.
12:34They fold it down the tail.
12:35They get you bits.
12:36And all the trims are intact.
12:37Nothing torn or worn.
12:39What's under here?
12:42Spare wheel.
12:43Full-size.
12:44Relatively full-size.
12:45Which you don't see very often.
12:46You've got your spare wheel.
12:49Put that up like that.
12:51Pull that out.
12:52Oh, wow.
12:53That stays there.
12:55And then you can lift your wheel out easily.
12:57You were like, what, it's 20 years ago since you worked on these.
12:59So even remembering that it did this is good.
13:01I'll drive out of here and forget that it even does this.
13:04Let's put it back.
13:05I'll let you do that.
13:08That is a really clever feature.
13:12It sometimes takes a little bit of wiggling and jiggling to get back in properly.
13:16Right.
13:17Okay.
13:18So you've seen around the outside of the car a couple of bits and pieces like that not working.
13:23Overall, what do you think of the interior of this car?
13:26You gave it a 7 out of 10 for the exterior.
13:27How about the interior?
13:29Do you know what?
13:30For the age of it, again, it's really good.
13:32You've got no tears.
13:33Leather's all intact.
13:35I think you're probably at a good 7 1⁄2, to be honest.
13:37Should we just bump it up to an 8?
13:39Always round up.
13:40The Germans round up, you see.
13:42At every decimal point, they round up.
13:43And that's why the 6.2 litre AMG engine...
13:46Oh, sorry.
13:47I was going around corners.
13:50Anyway, so 8.
13:51We'll call it an 8, then.
13:528 for the interior, 7 for the exterior.
13:54But now there's a moment of truth.
13:56We've got to look underneath.
13:57Right, Mitch.
13:58We've got the car up on a ramp.
13:59You've taken some covers off.
14:01What can you see up in here?
14:03Anything to be worried about?
14:05You have a power steering leak, for starters.
14:08Is that what that is?
14:09You can see that.
14:10You can see someone's had a go.
14:12That's not genuine.
14:14That's not an official repair from BMW.
14:16No, we don't.
14:17That looks like it's had a split
14:19and someone's put something over the top of it.
14:21You've got an alternator belt.
14:23Your AC belt is pretty badly cracked.
14:26Oh, gosh.
14:27Look at all the cracks in that.
14:28I'll be looking at replacing that.
14:29The air conditioning does work, though, for now.
14:31Yeah, until that belt snaps.
14:32Fair enough.
14:33Can't see any coolant leaks,
14:35but you do have an oil leak,
14:36which we can spot a little bit more.
14:38Oil leak sounds very bad.
14:39Let's have a look.
14:40Oh, God.
14:41Oh, my gosh.
14:42Look at this.
14:43Is it broken?
14:44I wouldn't use that word so much.
14:46I'm starting to panic right now.
14:48It's coming from the top and leaks down the side.
14:51So before you go panicking about anything down below,
14:56place the top, clean it off.
14:58Is a leak from the bottom worse than a leak from the top?
15:01Only with the amount of work required to fix them.
15:06So the top's easier to get to, basically.
15:08Yeah, because once you start looking at the bottom,
15:10you've got all this front axle suspension bracing
15:13and all that sort of stuff that tends to have to come down.
15:16It is pretty standard on these to have rocker cover leaks.
15:19So it's a normal feature of the E53.
15:22It's standard fit.
15:24This engine type, it is a pretty common occurrence.
15:27Really?
15:28Yeah.
15:29So not to worry about it.
15:30Just keep an eye on the oil level.
15:32If that's been like that for a decade
15:34and no one's done anything,
15:35it's going to look like that.
15:36Well, it's kind of like rust proofing.
15:39You can look at it that way.
15:40So that's nothing to worry about,
15:42but I will still get you to price up putting the new gasket on
15:45because it's the gasket around the rocker cover, yeah?
15:47Yeah.
15:48Okay.
15:49So we'll price that up.
15:50Let's move on to the suspension and the steering.
15:53Just a bit of corrosion around here.
15:55Not much to worry about on the edge of the car.
15:57It's all still pretty solid.
15:58It's just your front bushes here.
16:00Yeah, okay.
16:01I can see those.
16:02They've started to crack.
16:03I know that the tracking rod here on the right hand side is seized
16:07because of the tracking on the car.
16:08They could change the left,
16:10but they couldn't do anything about this
16:11because it's just solid.
16:13Yeah, to get that adjusted, we'll have to put the new one on.
16:15How about the rest of the suspension
16:16and the bushings throughout the car
16:17and at the back as well?
16:19There's a few issues with the back bushings.
16:21Let's have a quick look.
16:22Good news is someone's already been in
16:23and had a go at these ones.
16:24Look like they've been replaced.
16:26And these rear bushings are starting to wear off.
16:31Without driving, you'd have to see.
16:33The very back.
16:34So these appear a little bit kind of...
16:36Oh, I can see that's cracked.
16:38Yeah, it's cracked.
16:39So that can cause a bit of play,
16:40make it drive a bit loosely.
16:42Once they go, you'll have a knock.
16:44I don't think there's any knocks,
16:45but you'll find out when you drive it in a moment.
16:47You also got one of your drop links
16:49for your rear stabilizer split and leaking grease.
16:52Oh yeah, I can see.
16:54Someone has also had some repairs done to the diff.
16:58Oh, they don't come out of the factory like that?
17:00No, no, that is definitely not.
17:02That is not to German standards.
17:04All right, so suspension, it's okay.
17:07Yeah, it's kind of...
17:08Is it what you expect for this age?
17:09Yeah, well, it's got air suspension on the back as well.
17:12And it works.
17:13That is a good sign for a 20-year-old car.
17:15Because that could be expensive to replace.
17:16That would be very, very expensive.
17:18So if we're looking at eventually
17:19one day doing the bushings,
17:20should I do the shock absorbers as well,
17:22just as good practice?
17:23130,000 miles, or would you just, you know,
17:26leave it and accept that it's a 2,700-pound car?
17:29On a car this age, this price range,
17:32if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
17:34One last thing, the brakes.
17:35I'm going to be toying with this car, hopefully.
17:37So I just want to make sure the brakes are okay.
17:39What have you found?
17:40You've looked over the brakes, haven't you?
17:41Yeah, I've looked over front and rear.
17:43Rears are fine.
17:44Everything measures out perfect.
17:45The front ones, your front discs are a bit low.
17:48You've got plenty of meat left on your pads.
17:50Next time around,
17:51you'll definitely need to get your disc replaced.
17:53The underside of this car,
17:55what you've seen of it,
17:56and what you'd expect for a 20-year-old E53,
18:00what do you rate out of 10?
18:01I think I'd have to match it with the interior,
18:04to be honest.
18:05An 8?
18:06I'll give it an 8.
18:07The oil leaks, for example, are common.
18:08Like I said, I've done my apprenticeship on these
18:10almost 20 years ago,
18:12and I was fixing them back then.
18:13Okay, right.
18:14So it is a pretty standard thing on that engine.
18:16But the engine itself is quite solid, yeah?
18:18Yeah, yeah.
18:19Well, you've given it an 8 for underneath.
18:20What really matters is how it drives, right?
18:22Do you want to drive it?
18:23Yeah, let's go.
18:24Before we go for a drive,
18:25we thought it was wise to plug the car into the OBD reader
18:28to see if there's any fault codes,
18:30and we do have a few here, don't we?
18:32Got a few.
18:33I don't think there's too much to be worried about.
18:35Okay.
18:36So we'll clear them down,
18:37go for a drive,
18:38and see if anything comes back.
18:39I like the sound of that.
18:40Just clear them off, forget about them,
18:41and if they pop up again,
18:42we know we've got an issue that's recurring,
18:44whereas these could just be like...
18:45They could be historical.
18:46Historic.
18:47Okay.
18:48Let's hope they're historical,
18:49because this car has actually been well-maintained.
18:51So here's a service history book,
18:53and it's pretty much full, isn't it?
18:55Pretty much on time.
18:56It should be every two years.
18:58It's BMW official, right?
18:59Been to a BMW dealer the whole time.
19:01119,000 miles,
19:02so it's about 10,000 miles to go.
19:04119,000 miles.
19:06Woo!
19:07That was the last service at a BMW dealership.
19:09That's pretty impressive.
19:11So it should drive well.
19:12Should.
19:13All those vital fluids are in there.
19:14Because if you break it, you buy it,
19:16and it's now five grand
19:17because it's been vouched as being an 8 out of 10
19:19by a BMW Master Tech.
19:20It's all right.
19:21We'll speak to the boss.
19:22Let's drive it now.
19:23Right, Mitch.
19:24In the driver's seat.
19:25Take care of it.
19:26And go easy on your right foot
19:27because the economy's not great.
19:29Let's see what you think of it driving.
19:31Oh, look, straight away.
19:32There's a nicer one than mine.
19:34It's a facelift as well.
19:35It's the IS, isn't it?
19:364.8 IS, yeah.
19:38Oh.
19:39Shall we see if we can just ditch this one
19:41and get into that one?
19:43I'd prefer the engine in this one.
19:44Really?
19:45The older generation,
19:46I think they're a bit better.
19:47For the BMW geeks,
19:48this has an M62 engine.
19:50Yes.
19:52The one in that is an N.
19:53N62.
19:54This one is seen to be more reliable.
19:56Yeah.
19:57Not very quick, though.
19:58It's something like 270-odd horsepower.
20:00It's a big car, though.
20:01For 270 horsepower,
20:02my Toyota GR Yaris,
20:04it's got three cylinders,
20:061.6 litres,
20:07and that's almost the same power output
20:09as this big 4.4-litre V8.
20:11Come a long way in the last 20 years.
20:13Now, one thing I noticed
20:14when I started driving this for the first time,
20:16the steering seems heavy,
20:17and seeing that leak for the power steering fluid,
20:20is it related,
20:21or is it just the way they are?
20:22Yeah.
20:23The power steering fluid level is fine.
20:25I did check that under the bonnet,
20:27but this is what they've always felt like.
20:30They are a bit heavier.
20:31This generation of car,
20:33around this time,
20:34like E46s, E53s, E39 5 Series,
20:38it's just the feel of the hydraulic steering.
20:40That is the way they are.
20:42Because this is E39 5 Series generation,
20:45isn't it?
20:46Yeah.
20:47There's a lot of things in common
20:49electrically as well with that E39.
20:51Despite the tracking rod,
20:52it is driving nice and straight,
20:54like sitting in an old sofa,
20:55especially even with the steering.
20:57And the electric seats do work,
20:59like they do fully work,
21:00and the electrical steering column.
21:01I tell you what,
21:02not many rattles.
21:04No, nice and quiet.
21:05To be honest,
21:06a good trade of these cars,
21:07they didn't rattle that much.
21:10Was it like BMW going,
21:11look, this is our first SUV,
21:13let's make sure it's solid as hell.
21:15Have you ever had an XLR8 going up to 40?
21:18What does it feel like?
21:19It feels the way it should.
21:20It's got a nice little pull to it.
21:25Oh, that sounded nice higher up.
21:27And it's got the old style BMW trait
21:29where it pulls higher up in the rev range.
21:31You don't get that so much in modern cars
21:33because they're all torquey and turbo.
21:34Right, we're coming to a stop here.
21:35Try the brakes.
21:38Have you got that clunky sound?
21:40Or is it fine?
21:41It's there a little bit.
21:43Really?
21:44But it's not too bad
21:45because when it gets really bad,
21:46you feel it.
21:47So that's the bushings in the front?
21:49That's the bushings in the front.
21:50Being a little bit loose,
21:51that when you brake,
21:52you can feel a little bit.
21:53Yeah, it feels like the front axle's
21:55like moving a little bit.
21:57But you can hear it a little bit,
21:59feel it a bit,
22:00but when they get really bad,
22:02you can really feel it
22:03in through the steering and stuff as well.
22:05Is it worth me doing that, really?
22:07I don't want to spend any money on it.
22:09Not at the moment.
22:10I'd wait till you really know.
22:13That's what you want to hear
22:14when you've got a £2,700 car
22:16because it can soon become
22:18a £5,700 car, can't it?
22:20And that's why these things are so cheap, right?
22:22Because if you start doing repairs on them,
22:24and we'll find out if we do everything
22:25that I'd like to do
22:26that you've suggested on this,
22:28how much it could come to.
22:33So how was it moving then?
22:35The kickdown on the gearbox, fine?
22:37The kickdown's nice.
22:38And then it sounds good.
22:39It revs nice.
22:40It's nice and smooth.
22:41So it brings back memories.
22:42Being a main dealer,
22:43we don't see good ones of these very often.
22:46And this one is a good one for the age.
22:50Out of 10, for the drive,
22:53what are you going to give it?
22:54Bearing in mind,
22:55you've given it 7 for the exterior,
22:578 for the interior,
22:58and 8 for the underside and the mechanics.
23:00Of course, it's a V8.
23:01I'm going to give it a 9.
23:029!
23:04It's a 9 for the drive.
23:06I'm so pleased.
23:07So you think for £2,700,
23:09this has been a good buy?
23:10Definitely.
23:11If you bought a diesel,
23:13it wouldn't be higher than an 8.
23:16Fair enough.
23:17So Mitch has driven the car,
23:18he's assessed it,
23:19and you've established
23:21that it's a very good car,
23:24considering it's 20 years old.
23:26Yes.
23:27But if we wanted to make it light new,
23:29make it perfect,
23:30there are a few things that you picked out.
23:32And you've priced all those up now,
23:34and you're going to tell me
23:35how much it would cost me
23:37to make this car the dream X5, yeah?
23:40I'll give you the paperwork
23:41and let you have a quick feed through.
23:43Okay, so there's...
23:44On the last page there,
23:45at the bottom right-hand corner,
23:46you can see the price.
23:48Okay.
23:49Three pages.
23:51So this is parts and labour.
23:53Okay.
23:55Right.
23:56So,
23:58let me run through some of these things
24:00before I tell you the price.
24:02We've got the mounts,
24:03£177.90.
24:06Then we've got the gaskets and stuff
24:07for the rocker cover.
24:09Rocker covers.
24:10Is this with fitting as well?
24:11Yeah.
24:12£341.
24:13I thought it'd be more than that,
24:14to be fair,
24:15but still quite a lot of money.
24:16So that's the front pads and discs, yeah?
24:17Yes.
24:18That's £440 all in
24:20for the front pads and discs.
24:22So I'll wait till they start grinding.
24:24Steering hose,
24:25£266.
24:27The thermostat,
24:28because actually,
24:29the fault codes didn't come back
24:30apart from one.
24:31The thermostat fault.
24:32Could be quite important, that.
24:33That's £205 fitted, yeah?
24:36Yeah.
24:37And you've got your coolant
24:39on top of that, actually,
24:40so about £100.
24:41£100 for coolant, okay.
24:43For draining and refilling all your coolant, yes.
24:45The biggest single item here
24:46is like £1,014 for swing arms.
24:50I didn't remember you saying
24:51anything about swing arms.
24:52Yeah, that's your rear control arms
24:54for those bushes in the rear.
24:55They come as a whole arm.
24:56You can't buy those bushes separate.
24:57You can't buy the little rubber bit separate.
24:59You have to buy the whole.
25:00No, you have to get the whole arm
25:01for those inside ones.
25:02Let's move on.
25:03The door mirror.
25:04Yeah, that's a lot.
25:05It's like £472.
25:07And wait, these numbers I'm quoting
25:09don't include 20% VAT either.
25:11And that brings me on to the total bill.
25:13Parts and labour with VAT,
25:16£4,972.
25:21It doesn't need doing, though, does it?
25:23Necessarily.
25:24To make it perfect.
25:25That is to make it as good a car
25:27as it could possibly be.
25:28But it's a pretty good car.
25:29It's a pretty good car
25:30and it costs £2,700.
25:32That would turn it into a £7,700 car,
25:37which I could then sell the next day
25:39for £2,700 again.
25:41We won't do that.
25:42There is one thing we might do.
25:43The bonnet badge.
25:45£60.
25:46We can do that.
25:47What, you mean you'll do that for free?
25:48I think we'll be able to sort something out.
25:50We'll go and change it then if it's free.
25:52Otherwise, it was staying faded.
25:54I hope you all enjoyed the video.
25:55If you did, give it a like.
25:56Let me know what you think of my car
25:57in the comments, all right?
25:58If you want to watch some other videos,
25:59click on the windows
26:00and don't forget to click on my face
26:02to subscribe to this channel.
26:03Oh, there we go.
26:04Thank you very much for that, Mitch.
26:05No problem.
26:06Nice new badge there.
26:08I should point out,
26:09£40 for the badge,
26:10but that bit of labour
26:12that Mitch just did,
26:14that was £20.
