00:00This is my Porsche 911 996 and this is Richie Payne who's in charge of all the press vehicles at Porsche Great Britain
00:07So Richie, you're a Porsche technician. How long you been working on Porsches for 18 years been working on Porsches
00:12So back in the day you will have worked on the 996 when it was new
00:16Yeah, I was PDI 960 when they were new right up towards the end of their life before the 997 was launched
00:21So yeah, I've got a bit of knowledge for these cars now see Richie. He's in charge of all the press vehicles
00:26So whenever I get a car into review
00:28He and his team will be the people who set them up before we drive them and then fix them after us
00:35Journalists have kind of ragged them about so what I want you to do actually is grade my 996
00:40You've seen a lot of 911s, you know a good one from a bad one
00:44I want you to mark this car out of 10 and what we'll do will look around the exterior the bodywork
00:49You'll mark that out of 10 the interior you'll mark that out of 10
00:52And then we're gonna go for a drive and you'll mark that out of 10
00:56so I've done some mods to this car and I want to get your opinion on them whether they've enhanced it or
01:02Ruined it because mods can sometimes ruin a car can't it? It depends what they do. Yeah
01:07So and there's something else as well
01:09I've had a cool bit of tech fitted to this car, which you can have fitted to your older 911
01:15Really really cool, but more on that later in the video. Let's get on with it
01:22Before we get into this video, I'm gonna give you a bit of background on my 996 so I bought it in 2016
01:27It's actually a 1999 model year. I paid
01:3216,000 pounds for it and at the time it had
01:3455,000 miles on the clock now if you're thinking about buying one of these cars
01:37They have gone up in value a little bit and obviously if you are buying one
01:41You need to do a vehicle history check on it and I recommend using car vertical
01:44So I've done a history check on this car and thankfully it's come back clean and the mileage checker
01:50Vouchers to the mileage that is on the clock. Thank goodness for that
01:54However, you can't be sure exactly what car you buy and say you want to be checking that the car that you potentially buying hasn't
02:00Got outstanding finance hasn't been stolen and hasn't been crashed and written off
02:03And one of the good things about car vertical is that they can actually show you crash damage photos
02:08You might be buying a car thing. Oh, that looks clean. But actually no, it's not it's been badly damaged for instance
02:14Here's a report I've got and look at these damage photos here. Oh my god
02:18Look, that car has been seriously seriously crashed. That's awful
02:22You wouldn't want to be buying a car that's been crashed like that and then subsequently fixed

02:48Right, we're gonna start appraising my car Richie beginning with the body works. It's looking lovely. What have you guys into it?
02:54I've done a two-stage pass machine polish on the car just to get out a few surface scratches a few slightly deeper scratches and
03:00Just rejuvenate the paint really you pleased with it
03:02Yeah, it looks absolutely gorgeous. But obviously when they've been doing that they spotted all the defects and things that are on the cars
03:08So let's talk through them. Where's the first obvious area of defection?
03:13Dent down the bottom here this little crease
03:16Possibly a bollard maybe at some point that wasn't me. I think it came with that. But yeah, there's some filler in there
03:21Good spot. I knew about that car had a little bit of paintwork probably just superficial damage
03:26You can tell just go around the car. It's never had any drama in its life. It's all original panels one telltale
03:31I mentioned about the chassis sticker is still underneath the bonnet. Yep
03:34Do you know what it has had someone sat on the roof?
03:36All right
03:36Someone flat sat on the roof dented it all in but these guys at the dead network spent about two or three days like just
03:42Massaging it out. You didn't really notice did it? I think it's years of experience looking at them
03:46I just know it's a slight imperfection
03:48But they've done a great job because they're strengthening bars that run through that roof that haven't creased the roof panel
03:53So yeah, they're playful. How about the wing?
03:55It's in good condition a few little stone chips bit of road rash there
03:58But nothing for the age of the car and enthusiastic driving nothing untoward the lights headlights in good condition
04:04The guys have machine polished them. They're clearer. Yeah less yellow original bonnet badge. Yes
04:09Looks like someone's might have had a little go at perhaps trying to oh, yeah
04:12It sticks up there. I didn't notice that I've tried to have a little lever off of the bag
04:15I don't know. I'm laughing at that. It's not a little memento
04:19From bumper slightly different shade. Yeah, it's been recently respray because it had been banged
04:24So there's a like crease and cracking in the paintwork side that done but I noticed that they filled up it in there
04:29Yeah, it's sort of half black plastic half half color-coded that's why the paint's peeling off there shouldn't be on there paint
04:37I'm losing some marks and now aren't I? Okay down this side any damage? No, it's actually really good
04:42Even the bottoms of the wings and the seals they tend to get quite a lot of stone chips and bits where it flicks up
04:47Off the tires. They're in really good condition as well. So pulling some back now wheels are good as well
04:52Wheels are in good condition. No corrosion on them or anything like that anything down here seals are all good
04:57This rear wing around this area, there's a little bit of filler in there
05:01So they might have been a little dent there which they've got out and then just put a skim of filler in and rubbed it
05:05Down, but I didn't notice this until he pointed it out
05:08So we've got a slightly different shade of blue over this side to this bit here and the roof haven't way a little bit
05:13Yeah, other than that rear bumpers in really good condition. No dents parking dents original badge on the back
05:18It's never been replaced. So it's really original car. There are a couple of things that annoy me though. So the exhaust
05:23They're not quite symmetrical. The ones like drooped a bit
05:26Your one tailpipe is just out further than the other it can be adjusted and then the number plate is slightly off-center
05:31We move that back across. Anyway, what I want you to do now Richie is to give me your verdict out of ten
05:36What do you think of my 996 is bodywork?
05:39Okay, well, there's a few areas that already had paint work where you might want to get sorted out, but it's original which is great
05:45It's never had any excessive drama in its life. No big accidents or anything like that seven out of ten seven out of ten
05:51I'll take that
05:53Okay. Now we're going to check out the interior of my 996 first of all Richie. What do you think of the color scheme?
06:00It goes well with the exterior. It's a period color
06:02Do you know what? I think the interior on this car is really good condition considering. It's a 20 year old car
06:07Yeah is in really good condition. It's hard wearing. It's lasted 20 years in the steering wheel. It's not gone shiny
06:14So it's been looked after headlining is great as well
06:17Which is surprising because the guys who repaired the roof had to take it down and then put it back in
06:21The color do you honestly like it because do you know what?
06:24I've just had a baby daughter and this color is
06:27Kind of like the color her poos were between the age of I think two months and four months before she started on solids
06:34Well now you said that is probably my first choice. No, I
06:37Love it though. You say it works really well with the exterior blue, doesn't it?
06:41What I want you to do now is grade the quality of my 996 is interior
06:46We can give it at 10 age how it's been looked after. It's got to be another solid 7 7
06:50We haven't we haven't got original floor mats. So that's just where you've lost the points there
06:54Oh, I think the interior is better quality than the exterior. Are you sure you want to stick on 7?

07:03Now actually it should be a 9 because there's something that will turn this into a 9 and it's this thing that you fitted
07:09Porsche now do a modern infotainment system for your classic car. It's insane. Look go and turn it on. Look at this
07:17So we've got a Porsche crest there look at this big screen nice clear screen and the best bit is this it's got Apple CarPlay and
07:24Android Auto now even modern Porsches have only just introduced Android Auto and this has it
07:30Please plug that in plug it in plug it in. Oh, I'm so excited

07:39Wow, I've got full sat nav with the satellite picture of Google Earth. Look at that
07:44Obviously, it's got inbuilt nav if you lose signal there you go SD card reader DAB radio Bluetooth phone
07:51I'm all about Spotify mate. So this is one of the good things if you get an aftermarket unit
07:55It just doesn't quite fit with the car this totally does doesn't it like the design of the buttons?
07:59It's like got Porsche font and all that kind of thing and the color look orange backlighting like the orange down here
08:06For the climate control and you can change the color that kind to match the generation of car
08:11Yes white or amber to match what year of car or what period of lighting was using the car
08:16It's all been thought about even down to the buttons as well are all in keeping with what would be correct for that year
08:22Of car so price of this it's about 1,400 pounds, isn't it?
08:25How long to fit it about three and a half hours to fit?
08:27Yeah
08:28You can try and do it yourself or you can get your Porsche tech to do it
08:30You can order the classic unit through a PCC M plus unit for your past department your IPC if you're overfitting it yourself
08:36Then by all means about we'd recommend perhaps getting it done by our dealer network
08:40Just make sure everything's 100% or you could use it independent. Sorry mate

08:48And I am partial to this. This is brilliant. The only trouble is it's got the protective film on it
08:52I really struggle to remove. I don't take that off. No, I don't I want to leave it. Oh god

09:05First things first got the window down. I want you to hear my modified exhaust. We've got a wall next to us
09:09Go and give it some
09:11All the way all the way all the way
09:19Well, I'm smiling
09:22Sounds good. I
09:24Just got some guy for a couple hundred quid to put a bypass
09:28Pipe round the main exhaust boxes and it makes that noise. It's got a nice tone to the exhaust. It does sound good
09:34And it's not too intrusive in the car. So I'm pleased with that and you like that. I like that
09:38Yeah, so you did just accelerate quite seriously
09:41Then what do you think about the power from this engine?
09:43Does it feel like it's lost some ponies it as soon as it's 4,000 rpm comes on cam
09:47And then you can just feel it picking up and pulling so it pulls. Well, I'm impressed with that
09:52It doesn't feel like it's lost anything the suspension
09:54We need to talk about the suspension because this has been fully poly bushed with power flex polyurethane bushings
09:59It's also got Ohlins road and track coil overs. It's also got Tara anti-roll bar
10:05So hollow stiff anti-roll bars and tarot drop links. So quite an extreme setup. What's it like?
10:11It's really compliant. Do you think so? Yeah, it's really compliant. I mean I
10:16Can only gauge it on gt3 because that's the most extreme setup that we have online stop cars
10:22It's so compliant over bumps. You get like now, you know, love them
10:26This is bad here in it, so we're going through a 30 here, but it's not crashing or banging soon
10:30It's poly bushed as well. Yeah, I'm actually really impressed. So I haven't cocked it up
10:34No, I was expecting it to be bouncing around like a rubber ball to be honest with you
10:38But actually it's really good to drive around and it is fun though
10:43You got me this is firmer than the standard car than the standard 996. Oh, yeah
10:47But if anything it does right no different to like standard ride high standard damped car a bit lowered this way
10:54No, yeah, it's like it sits about 40 50 mil lower considering the ride heights different. Yeah, that's right
11:00Really?
11:00Well, but also you've got that with the 17 inch wheels a little bit more compliance in the tires as well
11:05So that will absorb a lot of the bumps and bits it tracks nicely doesn't pull or anything like that other acceleration
11:10So yeah, I'm impressed drives really well gear linkage is nice
11:14I know we said if the cables just maybe a little bit of play when actually when you're out on the road driving it
11:19Yeah, it does feel good. So another thing I've got fit to this guy a semi-solid engine mount
11:23So you don't have the engine moving about so much. Well, I was trying to create with this was a sort of cheap man's
11:31996 gt3 am I just imagining things with the upgrades you've done on the car?
11:36He makes it good fun be right blasting
11:41This is it comes on cam
11:45Brakes while the brakes like brakes are good. You've replaced those of you. Yeah, they've got neat pads and discs. Yeah
11:51Well, I didn't did I the guy who I bought it off did that they've had 10,000 miles on them
11:55Yeah, they're good pedals got a nice feel to it as well. Another mod I've done on. This is a limited-slip diff
12:01It's a wave track. I was wondering if you'd noticed that it's fitted
12:04Yeah
12:04You can feel it when you start loading up through the bends you start feeling the diff locking up and it just sells the car
12:10And you can feel it just pushing the back end through the bends. It's a progressive diff
12:14So it feels really nice as you're coming out next in the corner
12:17You feel it locking up pulling the car around we're an open diff
12:20It might just start to feel a little bit woolly coming out the bends. So I'm a good mod
12:24Yeah
12:25A lot of people say you don't need a diff on a 911 because the weights, you know at the back
12:28But it always helps to net even the roads are damp and bits like that
12:32But you can feel it help put the power down as you're coming out the bends. You look like you're enjoying yourself. It's good fun
12:37Yeah, I love it
12:39Overall then you've scored the bodywork the interior
12:43Score the drive. What do you score out of 10? I was gonna be a 9. It's a 9. Yeah, it's a 9
12:48Yeah, what you've done it drives a lot better than what I imagined on paper
12:54I was a bit dubious. Actually, it's really really really good
