00:00After the engine was installed, we got to work fully stripping the interior.
00:17This takes longer than you think, and there are a lot of things to unbolt.
00:21The next step was to remove the sound deadening, as it actually weighs a fair amount and this
00:25is where I was going to have to weld the roll bar in.
00:27We used a heat gun and it came right up.
00:30You can also use dry ice and freeze it and then smash it.
00:33After that, I removed the sunroof cassette, which is really quite a lot of weight way
00:36up high in the car, and I got to work fabricating a sunroof delete panel, which I made from
00:41some 20 gauge steel and a lot of rivets.
00:44This is actually fairly straightforward, just time consuming, especially if you rivet by
00:47hand.
00:49After I finished that up, I handed the car over to my friend Danny from DoubleClutch.ca
00:52magazine, who also happens to be a welder at Cold Fusion Welding.
00:56I got my cage from Roll Cage Components, and they do the majority of the fab work and design
01:01work, and then you need someone like Danny to weld it all together.
01:06Just got to Full Fusion Welding.
01:09This is where we turn garbage into gold, and speaking of garbage, there's a garbage can
01:15right there.
01:17Well, part one's done.
01:20Stitched in some plates to disperse the weight to the base of the roll bars, and we had to
01:31trim the roll bar to actually get it vertical.
01:35Part one is done.
01:36Good thing I'm in the shop, because it's friggin' raining outside.
01:43Well, got the two rear supports in place, and had to stitch in some plates on the bottom
01:57to disperse the weight again.
02:01Coming along, coming along.
02:05So, had to remove the door cards in order to let the door close and clear the downward
02:22bar, and the seat just fell out of its place.
02:32I guess I should have bolted it, but, yeah, coming along nicely.
02:40Well, day one's out of the way.
02:46Got her all tacked up, and thanks, Thomas, for prepping everything for me.
02:51You know, it's nice that you had the door sills removed so I had some room to close
02:58the doors.
02:59Not!
03:01And, yeah, so, that's it all fit up.
03:08Pretty horizontal, I must say.
03:11Minimal clearance at the root, which is ideal, and, yeah, tomorrow I'm gonna fix some of
03:16those holes in the floors and weld her up.
03:23I picked up the car after Danny had done a great job welding the bar in, but I only got
03:27a few miles before.
03:28Alright, so that went just about as well as I thought it was going to.
03:31We're at a gas station in Lindsay, Ontario, because, well, we got the race car back, everything
03:38else is kind of working, but I knew this was gonna be a problem, and I was just kind of
03:44ignoring it, hoping that it would go away, and it didn't.
03:48Down there is a power steering pump.
03:49It's not hooked up to anything.
03:50There's no lines or anything, so I was just using it as a pulley because I couldn't get
03:56a belt that would fit with the power steering delete from Condor Speed Shop, so what I ended
04:00up doing was just running it as a pulley, and I roasted the power steering pump, and
04:04it almost caught on fire.
04:06So yeah, we're getting towed.
04:08I finally got the right belt size for the power steering delete, and then I took the
04:12ECU to Jim over at AMT Tuning, who does high-quality custom tunes.
04:17He set me up with something that will suit my car and my driving style, but even though
04:20I worked as hard as I could, I still couldn't get the car ready in time for the first Ontario
04:24Time Attack.
04:26So I went anyway to support my friend and fellow Throttle House writer, Kevin Wong.
04:30You can read his experiences of the day on thethrottlehouse.com.
04:41All right, we're out.
04:42Ontario Time Attack still.
04:43There's Kevin.
04:44He's currently leading his class like a boss.
04:46It's only because I'm not here and competing.
04:48That's really the only reason why he's leading, not that we're in the same class anyway.
04:51What are you doing, Kevin?
04:52Checking my oil.
04:53My P-TECH juice.
04:54Your P-TECH juice.
04:55Well, that's what Val calls it.
04:56Is it?
04:57I bet.
04:58Is it okay?
04:59Look at that.
05:00Hang on.
05:01You don't see this on my channel very often.
05:02Pretty good, right?
05:03P-TECH juice.
05:04P-TECH juice.
05:05Yeah, we're good.
05:06We're good.
05:07So Kevin's going to go out and set a, what did you do again?
05:08I did a 1.23.7.
05:091.23.7.
05:10For those of you that know this track, S2000 with no coilovers, just tires, that's what
05:11we're going to do.
05:12We're going to go out and set a, what did you do again?
05:13I did a 1.23.7.
05:141.23.7.
05:16For those of you that know this track, S2000 with no coilovers, just tires, that's a good
05:25time.
05:26Tires and camber bolts.
05:29Offset ball joints.
05:30That's what it is.
05:31Camber bolts?
05:32What am I, a peasant?
05:33I kid you.
05:34Harley did a good job.
05:35Yeah, well, just right out of the box, it's faster than that car I think probably ever
05:41will be, I think.
05:43Just because it's never going to end up being here, it never works.
05:46With only two weeks between Time Attack events, I got to work, and after some very last minute
05:50work from my friends at Burning Rubber Tire and Speed, I hope you watched my live stream
05:54of that, the car was finally ready to go.
06:00The roll bar allowed me to run a Seibelt 6-point harness, and I was feeling good, even though
06:05we couldn't quite get the setup I was hoping for out of my current suspension, but even
06:09with my minimal front camber, I sent it as hard as I could.
06:13This second Ontario Time Attack event took place at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park Driver
06:17Development Track, which is one of the most fun tracks in the area, and it's made even
06:21better when OTA is running it.
06:23Their organization is impeccable, as always, and the competition is everything you have
06:27ever wanted in grassroots motorsports.
06:30Alright, we are at Ontario Time Attack.
06:36It's very hot, and I'm wearing a fireproof racing suit.
06:40There's no air conditioning in my truck.
06:44Welcome to racing.
06:46So, it's been the morning runs, we're gritting based on how fast we were there.
06:52So I'm in GT2 class.
06:54I managed a, what did I do, a 130, wait, 90, a 135.3 I think is what I did, which I'm pretty
07:08proud of.
07:09That's a pretty good time.
07:10This car is actually very hard to drive.
07:11Alright, so, for those of you that have been following the build, Condor Speed Shop bushings
07:17everywhere, and now that I've had it on the track, I can tell you that that does make
07:20a difference.
07:22The car is incredibly tight.
07:23It's very obvious that the suspension is capable of doing its job, which is pretty important.
07:31And the engine and transmission mounts and shifting, you notice it a lot.
07:34There's no canting of the engine like this, and the shifts just happen cleaner.
07:40You notice if you mess up more, which is good, and you get better.
07:46As for just driving the car around with the Condor Speed Shop bushings, there's a lot
07:50more vibrations that come through in the steering wheel, but only when you're just
07:53rolling away.
07:54You feel it go, and it buzzes through the steering wheel, and then you don't notice
08:00it on the road.
08:01The car just feels tighter, which is nice.
08:03It's a good balance between road and track.
08:05I'm running a renowned USA Alcantara steering wheel, which I really, really like, and it's
08:09important because I did a Condor Speed Shop power steering delete, and this is necessary
08:17to be able to turn the wheel.
08:18It uses very high steering effort right now.
09:49I can't talk to you during that.
10:03This car is exhausting to drive.
10:07I'm absolutely cooked right now.
10:12My heart's probably going at like 190 beats per minute.
10:17This is the most physical driving experience I've ever had.
10:21I've driven some fast and difficult cars.
10:24This is way harder to drive, which makes it more rewarding, but it also makes it harder
10:30for me to set a fast lap time, so we'll see what happens.
10:36I need to get at least 3 tenths faster for this run.
10:42My timer just died, so I don't know how fast I went.
10:47No idea.
10:50I was really fast in a couple corners, but I messed up a couple others, so I have a feeling
10:56I'm going to be at the same time.
10:59I have no idea.
11:02I'm really out of breath.
11:03I need to drink the water.
11:06Sadly, I ended up fifth in class, but I was happy because the car was very competitive,
11:13and there was under a second separating the four people in front of me.
11:17I can't wait to get a more ideal suspension setup, because coming up next is the Grand
11:22Prix track at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.
11:24I can't wait for that one.
11:26It's one of the best tracks in the world.
11:29Kevin did well in his class.
11:30Make sure you read his story on thethrottlehouse.com, and don't forget to subscribe for more Throttlehouse.
11:43Thanks for watching.
