00:00In the many things that are seen and read online, do you know which is the truth and which is the fake news?
00:14Fake news is made up of information that looks like the truth, that is far-fetched and manipulated by the public.
00:21In a study by Dr. Jonathan Ong and Dr. Jason Cabañas, it started to become a hot topic in the Philippines during the 2016 election.
00:51One of the fakes is the former graduate, Chris. He doesn't have a real name.
00:58Because he was looking for a job during the 2015 election, he jumped to the bright side.
01:04At first, he was just a moderator of a Facebook page that was used during the election.
01:09Until...
01:11At first, they said that we should monitor the comments, the malicious comments,
01:15block those who say that it's not good.
01:19But in the end, we need to make a content or post that will destroy the opponent of our candidate.
01:27Chris didn't know that he was already doing a troll.
01:32The word troll of 2015 is not yet known.
01:36It's very simple. The caption is already prepared, the pictures are already prepared, where you will post it, what time you will share it.
01:44How much is your salary there?
01:46I started with P17,000. We were paid in cash.
01:52What was the worst thing you wrote?
01:54We accused a candidate of being a troll.
01:58Because it's not proven that the opponent of our client is a troll.
02:06This is where Chris gradually felt that there was something wrong.
02:09Every day, our boss pressured us to think that this could be a trick to the opponent.
02:17Even if it's not true, even if it's exaggerated.
02:22But you still followed it.
02:24Uhm... yes.
02:27I'm making money, so why would I stop?
02:31It's already near the end.
02:33The hierarchy or structure of a troll farm is simple.
02:36The client or the one who benefits from disinformation is the boss.
02:42Next is the troll operator or consultant who is in charge of the entire operation.
02:48And they are the troll workers who spread misinformation using stolen identities that they usually get from other countries, particularly in Southeast Asia.
02:59There are bosses and they won't ever call themselves a troll.
03:04But they are actually the real masterminds of the operations.
03:09They will dictate the talk points and the main kinds of stories.
03:14In this kind of work, Val is not a real name.
03:19He was hired to be a digital operator, the best country for troll workers.
03:25But he didn't enroll as a candidate, but as a businessman.
03:29The company that hired him is competent.
03:44According to Chris and Val, it's easy for people to believe.
03:48Topics that instill fear, anxiety, or resentment.
03:53These are the topics that are really being attacked by trolls.
03:58And these are what they use to use as digital weapons, really, to steer the conversation, to draw people's attention.
04:08What's sad is that even politicians who are angry at fake news are forced to use trolls.
04:16It's becoming more normalized, it's becoming more professionalized.
04:20It's more expected now that we need to fight too.
04:24We need to be meme wars too.
04:27But in the middle of spreading misinformation, we can still do something to fight fake news.
04:34We need to empower workers, empower our students to have better vocabulary of ethics.
04:40Better vocabulary of good and bad practice.
04:43So that we can overlook the questions of ethics.
04:50Chris and Val admitted that their illegal job is to live everyday in fear.
05:01In the end, they were the ones who made the decision.
05:06It's like guilt, ma'am.
05:07It's like guilt, ma'am.
05:09It's like you were cheated by someone, ma'am.
05:11And at this point, you're also cheating yourself.
05:14I'm not being hypocritical.
05:16A lot of money will be lost.
05:18But I can't ignore my conscience.
05:20What I'm doing is wrong.
05:22It's really wrong.
05:24I blame it.
05:26We have the power to fight fake news.
05:29Let's start with being able to judge other parts.
05:32Because our freedom to live in the truth is great.
05:38Maris Umali reporting for GMA Integrated News.
06:02In the end, it's all about being able to judge other parts.
06:06It's all about being able to judge other parts.
