00:00Which is quite poignant when you begin to realise that we're in Turin, where some England supporters misbehaved ten years ago.
00:07And where Italian families, of course, still mourn those who were lost in Heysel.
00:12This is the West German line-up and as you said in the studio, there are two surprises by Franz Beckenbauer.
00:18That's the normal defensive partnership of Kohler and Alguenthaler and Buchwald.
00:22But as we get deeper into the team, Berthold will play in the back section as well.
00:28And Matthäus will try to run the midfield as he's been doing for most of the tournament.
00:32But there's the return at number 8 of Thomas Hessler, the £5 million player.
00:36And there's the other surprise, Olaf Thöne at number 20 in midfield.
00:40And Buller returning after suspension to partner the dangerous Jürgen Klinsmann.
00:45And Beckenbauer has decided to make those two alterations and leave out Litvarski and Bein.
00:53Matthäus is the captain of West Germany.
01:02And they will play in green shirts tonight, with England keeping to their traditional colours.
01:07Peter Schilten, whose record for World Cup minutes without a goal was beaten last night by Zenger.
01:14Then Des Walker and Stuart Pearce in their normal positions.
01:17Parker will be on the right again.
01:19And Mark Wright playing with six stitches above the left eye.
01:23But was so keen to get out there.
01:25Chris Waddle, still perhaps to produce his very best.
01:28Terry Butcher and David Platt, who's scored two goals already.
01:33Seems to be the man for the occasion, as indeed has Gascoigne been.
01:36Highly rated by the observers out here.
01:38Peter Berzley's return after coming on as a substitute for John Barnes.
01:42And Gary Lineker, with whom I watched the first semi-final last night.
01:47He was in very high spirits indeed.
01:49And almost eyes shining at the prospect of playing in a World Cup semi-final.
01:55And who knows, maybe a final as well.
01:57Not even on the bench Litvarski.
01:59Riedler is a striker.
02:01Muller, a midfield player.
02:03And Reuter, a raiding defender.
02:05That's Beckenbauer's choice.
02:07Now the England substitutes, who Bobby Robson selected this afternoon.
02:14Steve Ball, Trevor Stephen, Steve McMahon, Tony DiRigo.
02:18He was the last one really to be chosen.
02:20And Chris Woods.
02:26The overall record between the two countries shows 18 meetings,
02:309 wins for England, 6 for West Germany.
02:333 draws, significantly or not, since the 1966 World Cup final.
02:38England have won only 2 out of 10 against West Germany.
02:43If we could just improve on that tonight,
02:45England may be in the World Cup final.
02:49Over goes Al Gontala early on.
02:51And Gary Lineker doing some bustling.
02:54And England force a corner in the first minute.
02:56It's a promising start.
03:02Terry Butch is making his way forward.
03:07Into the near post area.
03:09Gary Lineker standing just behind him on the goal line.
03:14Waddles moving to the centre now.
03:17And there is Butcher.
03:18And it was only just scrambled away.
03:20And the shot back in was an absolute beauty.
03:25By Gascoigne.
03:27And it forced Ildner to make a flying save.
03:30What a good, solid start by England this is.
03:35Paul Gascoigne really struck it well.
03:40And 3 corners in succession.
03:47This one was half cleared.
03:50And Gascoigne had the shot.
03:52And Ildner, well, he was turning it round.
03:58Waddles in there.
03:59And now it comes to Pearce.
04:01But it was away by Matthäus.
04:04Walker.
04:06And one player kept them onside there.
04:08It was Bremer.
04:12Well, excellent start by England.
04:14As a player, you always like to get a few good early touches.
04:17And to get 3 corners like that, excellent.
04:19Paul Gascoigne's shot just going wide.
04:21Ildner taking no chances, pushed it round to a corner.
04:24Yes, my impression was it probably would have just gone past the post.
04:27It is a flying start by England.
04:28It's Beardsley.
04:29And we've got two waiting in the middle.
04:32Well, Germany were the team who in the quarter-final
04:36made a storming start against Czechoslovakia.
04:39But it's Bobby Robson's team tonight
04:41who show they really mean business in this semi-final.
04:50Gascoigne.
04:52Free kick the other way though.
05:02Big security operation again.
05:04It's been estimated that 8,000 police and security men
05:07are involved in the setting up and controlling of this match.
05:12Platt's chasing this.
05:16And he's turning Alcantara.
05:23Determination from the Aston Villa player.
05:26On the ball for West Germany.
05:28Meantime, it's Bremer.
05:29This is Tone.
05:31And Platt certainly there showed he was prepared to take his man on.
05:36Hessler.
05:39Still Hessler.
05:42And he tries a shot which is curving a bit.
05:44It took a deflection off an England player in front of him.
05:48And it's a corner.
05:49To West Germany.
05:55Now then, better watch as Stuart Pearce
05:58started to close him down here.
06:00Got the deflection. It's a corner.
06:02And Berthold is up.
06:03Buchwald is up.
06:04And Alcantara is up.
06:12And Buchwald is up.
06:14And Alcantara is up.
06:17And Buchwald is dangerous at those,
06:20as we saw against Czechoslovakia.
06:22Hessler.
06:29Bremer.
06:35Klinsmann.
06:36Fuller tried to get through.
06:37I think that was quite good defending
06:41because they were tight on Fuller and Klinsmann
06:45as they played the ball into feet.
06:47Or cut. Kohler.
06:53Oh, and Klinsmann's in free space in the inside left position.
06:56Found by Berthold.
06:58And fortunately for England, Des Walker covered.
07:01Or maybe Klinsmann wasn't quite as quick as he normally is.
07:04They left him alone there.
07:06I don't quite know where right the marker had gone.
07:10Nearly a break by Kohler.
07:12The marker right in his own half.
07:14He came forward to make the extra man.
07:16Drew one of our centre-backs and that left Klinsmann clear.
07:19But fortunately again, he fell over looking for the free kick
07:22rather than take the man on.
07:23Lineker picking it up from Beardsley.
07:27Platt.
07:29And here comes Stuart Pearce.
07:31And Lineker's come to the near post.
07:34Corner.
07:38The great tackle by Kohler because it was a super move.
07:40David Platt holding that play.
07:42Stuart Pearce, good low cross from Gary Lineker.
07:44Just thought, I thought here as he goes across,
07:46he's got half a yard on Kohler, but he slid in and blocked
07:49what would have been an armed target shot.
07:51Butcher and right are up for this one.
07:56But the delivery wasn't there from Peter Beardsley this time.
08:02Dropped it too short.
08:08Stuart Pearce, who my recollection is right,
08:11has only been on the losing side twice for England
08:14in his 29 internationals.
08:20He gets the ball moving again and here's Butcher.
08:27Waddle.
08:34This time it was Paul Gascoigne who was fouled by Bremer.
08:38England have done so well from free kicks in this tournament.
08:41Delivery's been good.
08:44Just wonder if Waddle could get the ball in here
08:46that might suit Terry Butcher or David Platt.
08:49Or even Mark Wright.
09:00And there goes Wright.
09:01Good header by Klinsman. Gascoigne.
09:08Second time the ball has fallen to him in that inviting position.
09:13For a volley from outside the area.
09:16And he struck it through the crowd of players quite accurately.
09:26Waddle.
09:32And Lineker at the near post.
09:34Good challenge by Jurgen Kohler. Needed to be.
09:39Klinsman. Völler is still out of the game.
09:41The back heel has put him in trouble.
09:43But I think there may have been a foul.
09:45Oh, and turned over, but it wouldn't have mattered.
09:47I was right, there was a foul.
09:48Gascoigne had tangled in the centre circle with Albin Thaler.
09:53Chris Waddle.
09:55Well, Trevor, it would have been spectacular, wouldn't it?
09:57But the play had already been stopped before Chris shot.
10:00I think it's that haircut, you know.
10:02He obviously saw the keeper out.
10:04I mean, it's a great shame because it was a great play here.
10:07He looked up, hit it.
10:08It was for the foul there just before the two people going out of the pitch.
10:12But just touched it onto the crossbar.
10:14It took away what would have been a fabulous piece of play.
10:17But just shows how alert and sharp the English players are at the moment.
10:21Memories there of Pelé in 1970 in Mexico.
10:24I think Chris came even closer, really, there.
10:26Völler's back on his feet. This is Bremer.
10:30Go on!
10:36Piers challenged Berthold as he went for the header.
10:38The linesman is flagged in Germany's favour.
10:41But they're still down...
10:42Well, they'll be down to nine fit men at the moment
10:44because they're going to have to make a substitution, I think.
10:47The officials on the line are running towards the referee,
10:51the FIFA fourth official, I mean by that,
10:54to say that Karl-Heinz Riedler, number 13, is ready to come on.
10:59And I suspect that means, not so much Berthold,
11:01who you've seen go over there,
11:03but I feel that Rudi Völler may be out of the match.
11:11Köhler.
11:12Bremer.
11:15Buchwalter stayed forward.
11:18Hessler.
11:21Thome.
11:24Olaf Thome's shot.
11:25And well-gathered by one of the Goyana goalkeepers.
11:31Very good save.
11:33Went so long without really having a lot to do.
11:35Had a nasty shot, as you can see.
11:38Well-struck.
11:39It just bounced in front of the keeper
11:41and they're probably the worst to hold on.
11:43With 39 minutes gone
11:45and the sad figure of Rudi Völler being helped away.
11:48Sad for Germany.
11:49This is Matthäus.
11:50And caught by Paul Parker.
11:55There's a good presence about this referee.
11:59He doesn't get overexcited.
12:01He doesn't use the yellow card unless he absolutely has to.
12:04And if Parker was a shade lucky there,
12:06well, I think Hussein Wright wants to just
12:10give the benefit of the doubt to the player when he can.
12:14Now, Bremer.
12:16Matthäus is standing with Bremer here for Germany
12:21as the England wall forms.
12:23But it's Alguenthaler who will hit it.
12:37What a shot and a good save.
12:39At the highest order from Peter Schilten from Klaus Alguenthaler.
12:43How well he drills those and what good reactions.
12:48Corner though to West Germany.
12:50Berthold is up for it.
12:53So is Buchwald.
12:59He's come out to Hessler.
13:04Peter Schilten has been in top form in this World Cup.
13:07There were doubts expressed before England came out.
13:09Not now.
13:11Back.
13:15And Riedler's trying to get in there.
13:17The man who's just come on.
13:18Alguenthaler once again.
13:19Bremer.
13:22Buchwald is still forward.
13:23Riedler's hurt now.
13:25Matthäus.
13:35Berthold.
13:40Alguenthaler, he's got the space to come forward.
13:47Hessler.
13:49Tries to get the return here, Hessler.
13:53Germany are down to ten again.
13:58This is Berthold.
14:04Bremer.
14:08Into Klinsmann.
14:09There's nobody else in the penalty area for Germany at the moment.
14:18Matthäus.
14:23And it's going to be a corner.
14:25Hardly defending against Matthäus.
14:27Riedler, the man who came on.
14:30As you've just seen the Alguenthaler effort again
14:33and the stretching arms of Peter Schilten.
14:35...the most feared of the German strikers in terms of his goal output.
14:39Will play no further part in the match.
14:41He was injured and substituted by Karl-Heinz Riedler.
14:48And the referee brings the first half to an end.
14:51With England being applauded off by their supporters
14:54and by many of the Italians here too I might add.
14:57After making a very firm statement in the opening period
15:02which had the Germans rocking back on their heels.
15:05They had the injury to Fuller to cope with as well.
15:08So at half-time in the semi-final
15:10from an England point of view the performance was highly satisfactory
15:13even though there's no score.
15:17Many thanks, Des.
15:18I was just reflecting.
15:20We keep talking about 1966, don't we?
15:22But we've got one or two scores to settle with the West Germans
15:25for what they've done to us since then, haven't we?
15:27I'm listening to Bobby Charlton there.
15:29My mind went back to Mexico in 1970 when England led 2-0
15:32and the Germans beat us in the quarter-final after extra time.
15:36And in the 1972 European Championship at Wembley
15:39still under Sir Alf Ramsey
15:42the Germans knocked England out then too.
15:45So there have been some good battles
15:48between the two nations on the football pitch.
15:51And there's another one brewing up here now
15:54at the halfway stage in the World Cup semi-final.
15:57Just a reminder to anybody that came in a little late
16:00that the Germans lost Rudi Fuller with injury
16:02and replaced him with No. 13 Riedler.
16:05That was an enforced substitution.
16:08But as we start the second half
16:10it will be fascinating to see whether Matthias gets into the game.
16:13The German matches I've seen before this, he's really run the show.
16:16But today he's been pressed back a lot of the time
16:19but if anything on the defensive against Gascoyne.
16:23He was saying in the studio
16:25it's been an absolute revelation out here.
16:27That's a confirmation of the line-up as it stands at the moment
16:30with Riedler in.
16:36Forward by Algenthaler.
16:38Kessler and Riedler have both made the run
16:41and it was cleared by Des Walker from Kessler.
16:50Berthold.
16:52Matthias.
16:56Algenthaler.
17:00Berthold.
17:04Matthias. Riedler.
17:06Still Riedler. Matthias.
17:08Still Matthias.
17:10And England scrambling a bit.
17:12But in the end
17:15it was David Platt I think who sorted it out for us.
17:20And there's a reminder of how England have lined up for this
17:24momentous occasion.
17:29Wright.
17:34And the injuries to Wright and Walker
17:36which Bobby Rochford admitted to me at lunchtime today
17:38did constitute a risk
17:40starting with both of them.
17:42Fortunately at the moment show no signs of recurring.
17:45Here's Butcher.
17:50Riedler.
17:52It was just a moment of anxiety there in the England penalty area
17:55when Riedler and Matthias threatened to pick a way through.
17:57Kessler now. Dribbling well.
17:59Klinsmann.
18:01Play on. The referee doesn't mind the good old-fashioned challenge.
18:04The Germans got a lot of free kicks in Milan
18:07for offences sometimes more innocuous than harmless.
18:11Berthold.
18:13Not a very good pass. It was Beardsley who got a foot in and here he is again.
18:16And he's trying to get Pierce down the left.
18:18Linacre is the player in the centre.
18:24As Jimmy Hill mentioned it seems to me that the Germans have been playing with more tension
18:29than England in this match.
18:32Beardsley.
18:37A corner has been given.
18:41Which Beardsley has gone across to take.
18:43Now can England make it play?
18:45Butcher's making his way forward.
18:47One or two is in the near post area.
18:53Facing the kicker.
18:56Oh and Platt came in behind the two of them and he wasn't far off it.
19:00And there's a mistake by Pierce.
19:02And now Germany are breaking with Klinsmann going down the centre.
19:05And Walker there to stop him.
19:07But for how long? Klinsmann still free on the far side.
19:10This is Tone. Olaf Tone. Number 20.
19:13Good save Shilton.
19:16And called upon again.
19:18The goalkeeper making his 124th international appearance.
19:24Keeps England in it.
19:26Waddle.
19:28Gascoigne.
19:30An immediate counter attack.
19:32Play on against as the referee was having a terrific match in my opinion.
19:35There's a real flow to the game thanks to him.
19:37Matheus.
19:41It's really opening out now. Berthold.
19:44And Wiedler not reading it as one could say.
19:49Well one chance at either end there.
19:52First of all the corner where in fact the defenders were waiting for the goalies to come out.
19:57This one we've just seen.
19:58Tone when he broke one against one.
20:00Very rarely we've seen that.
20:02England, Paul Parker just left one against one.
20:04Tone made the shooting angle but Peter Shield once again he's standing up well.
20:08This is Waddle looking for Beardsley who found a great position at inside left.
20:12The Germans are back to ten men again.
20:14It's Andres Bremer who's off the pitch receiving attention at the present time.
20:22Hessler.
20:24It's a good run by Hessler.
20:28The challenge was by Pierce.
20:30And the referee was on the spot.
20:36Bobby Robson will be aware that this is the sternest test this period in the match for England.
20:45We've been playing 13 minutes in the second half.
20:48West Germany have a free kick in a position on the pitch.
20:52Where Bremer, the number three, scored in the World Cup semi-final four years ago in Mexico against France.
21:03Peter Shield will be perhaps extended again.
21:09Hessler was fouled by right.
21:15Now Bremer is standing at the back of the three.
21:20It's direct.
21:25And it's been deflected.
21:27And it's in the net.
21:31Bremer's shot.
21:36And I think it must have hit Paul Parker.
21:39I'm sure that spun off Paul Parker and beat Peter Shielden in the most unfortunate of circumstances.
21:51The Germans are celebrating.
21:53Andres Bremer drives the shot.
21:55Paul Parker, number 12, deflected it over the head of a despairing Shielden.
21:59And with a quarter of an hour gone in the second half of the semi-final, England are a goal down.
22:09Gascoigne.
22:13Is there a swift reply? Waddle.
22:15Beardsley, there may be.
22:18Now we're in Italy and technically in Italian football when that happens they always say own goal.
22:24So whether Paul Parker will have to accept that responsibility or whether the Germans will give the goal to Bremer is only an academic point.
22:31What is important is that England have gone behind after having had the better of the first half.
22:38But I have to be fair to the Germans.
22:40It was the product of a prolonged period of promising attacking by West Germany.
22:46And with the free kick in that position Beckenbauer would know that Bremer can always cultivate something.
22:53He had luck on his side but Germany are in front.
22:56Matthäus.
23:03And they're buzzing. Trevor.
23:06Well people have mentioned there's Bobby Robson.
23:08Probably very disappointed to concede a goal like that.
23:11I mean people have said we've been a little bit lucky in previous two games.
23:15Belgium can't remember any luck that we might have had.
23:17And Bremer took a free kick which if I'm not mistaken squirmed through the goalkeeper's hands that day.
23:24Anyway. Let's see what England can do about it.
23:30And they've got a free kick I think.
23:32Yes.
23:36Now Pats gone in there with Lineker.
23:40Butchers up.
23:43So he's right.
23:53Pearce was there. Oh so close. Stuart Pearce.
24:00You won't get much closer than that. That's quite amazing.
24:02Paul Gascoigne as we've seen all through this tournament whipping in the free kick.
24:06He puts him in at pace so well. You just need the faintest of touches in here.
24:10It's Stuart Pearce. Goalkeeper beaten.
24:14England now with Pearce finding Waddle.
24:16Lineker and Beardsley set off on their runs up front. This is right.
24:20And now it's Parker.
24:29Oh they're appealing for offside. The Germans and they're in trouble.
24:32Albenthaler couldn't do it. Lineker probably could.
24:34And England have equalised. It's Gary Lineker.
24:43The ace marksman keeps England in the World Cup.
24:49With just 10 minutes to go.
24:53It's his 35th goal for England.
24:55And who's to say it's not his most important.
25:00The German defence got itself into a terrible tangle.
25:04And how they were made to pay.
25:06It's a long ball by Paul Parker.
25:08Kohler and Albenthaler are in a mess.
25:11Lineker picks his spot with a beautiful left footer.
25:14Across the goalkeeper. It's 1-1.
25:17And at the other end Des Walker concedes a corner.
25:23Well we did say it wasn't over.
25:26And what a great moment for England and their supporters everywhere.
25:31Now they've got to organise themselves defensively.
25:33As Tone takes the corner for Germany.
25:43Well no more than we deserved.
25:45I should think back home there's a few bottles, crockery, cups
25:48and all that being replaced on tables and chairs.
25:50Because when that one went in everyone jumped up around here.
25:54It was a great goal. Paul Parker. Through ball.
25:57German defenders. Too many back there really.
25:59Getting in each other's way. Gary Lineker.
26:01A superb finish and a couple of occasions during this tournament
26:04they've been on his left foot. They've just run away from him.
26:07On that occasion he used all his experience.
26:09Picked the corner and well no more than we deserved.
26:12One apiece.
26:15Beardsley for England. Now breaking with Lineker to his right.
26:18And the Germans rattled.
26:22Gives Lineker four goals in the championship.
26:25He was of course top scorer with six in Mexico.
26:28He's now one behind the leaders here.
26:31Scuravi and Scalacci with five.
26:34Free kick to West Germany.
26:38With eight minutes to go and possibly extra time now.
26:43Just cost Stevie Ball. There's the goal again.
26:46I think I'll pause because I want to see it several times.
26:49There it is. Left foot tacked it away.
26:50Kohler couldn't block it on that occasion.
26:52But it cost Stevie Ball I think an appearance
26:54because he was just taking his track suit top off
26:56and then suddenly he's had to sit down again.
26:59Actually there were three defenders there
27:01weren't there that Lineker got away from?
27:02Reuter.
27:04Klinsmann.
27:05Nice for Paul Parker too isn't it?
27:07After having the misfortune to deflect the German goal
27:09that he should supply the cross for the England equaliser.
27:11Klinsmann again.
27:12Gascoigne.
27:13Driven it long.
27:14Lineker's away.
27:16Kohler trying to cut him off.
27:17Platt trying to get there in the middle.
27:19Waddle just behind him.
27:24But the referee has stopped the game
27:26because there's an injury to a German player
27:28and there was a collision I think off the ball
27:30maybe involving David Platt.
27:35David Platt was trying to get forward to join Gary Lineker
27:37and there was a bit of tugging with his marker
27:40and the referee spotted it and reckoned it was David Platt
27:43who'd done the shoving and penalised him for a free kick
27:45but Gary Lineker another magnificent run off the ball
27:48found superbly by Gascoigne.
27:51Mateus.
27:55Forward by Pearce looking for Lineker.
28:06Bremer.
28:07Bremer.
28:09That's harmless.
28:16Well you can hear the delighted England supporters
28:18inside the Stadio dell'Alpe
28:22and they're making the sound now
28:24as if they were 40,000 of them
28:26not 40,000 Germans and 4,000 English.
28:33Klinsmann against Wright.
28:35Ball was given away rather carelessly by England there.
28:41Algenthaler.
28:43Out on the right is Berthold.
28:51Algenthaler.
28:52Klinsmann's in there.
28:54It's come out to Bremer.
28:56We're into the last minute of the 90.
29:00Berthold.
29:02Reeder wants it in the middle.
29:04Klinsmann can't get away from Platt
29:08whose clearance that was for England.
29:10Forcing Germany back.
29:32It's looking like extra time.
29:37Well another half hour to enjoy or endure.
29:40We don't know quite how it's going to turn out yet
29:42but Brian Robson here
29:45that was a superb equaliser
29:47and certainly no more than England deserved.
29:50Can England go one step further
29:52and complete what would have to be something of a dream
29:56because nobody surely
29:58or very few people anyway
29:59thought we would get as close to the World Cup final itself as this.
30:03But thanks to Lineker's equaliser on 80 minutes
30:0620 minutes after the Germans had scored
30:08it's now going to be an extra half hour.
30:11And you made the point about fitness
30:13but against that the Germans have lost
30:15two of their better players.
30:16Buller off in the first half injured.
30:18Hessler left the field in the second half injured.
30:23And we're all trying to get back on track.
30:27We're all trying to weigh it up
30:29and of course you can't can you
30:30when football gets to this point.
30:31It makes it the game it is really.
30:33Nobody knows what's going to happen
30:34not even in the World Cup semi-final.
30:36The game isn't programmed like that.
30:37Away we go.
30:45And I suppose the only people who are completely detached from all this
30:49are possibly Argentina
30:50who are watching on the basis of wondering
30:52who they're going to play in the final on Sunday.
30:54Here's Chris Waddle.
31:00Oh it's a good run.
31:01And he's found Beardsley.
31:14Through into England to be taken by Pearce.
31:16Go England! Go England! Go England!
31:23Beardsley.
31:25He's lost it.
31:26Klinsmann.
31:28West Germany's got a bit of support arriving
31:31from Berthold here.
31:33It's Klinsmann again.
31:34Riedle has gone through the centre.
31:36It's Jürgen Klinsmann.
31:39And Riedle stays in the centre.
31:41It's a poor cross.
31:43Well a great covering by England.
31:45Mark Wright was very unlucky near the halfway line
31:47because he tackled Klinsmann then.
31:49The Germans got a lucky rebound.
31:51Knocked it back into Klinsmann's stride.
31:52Here he is.
31:53Superb tackle by Des Walker.
31:55And really just mentioned Klinsmann
31:57but you look back over the previous 90 minutes
31:59he's hardly had a look in
32:00and that's credit to the two markers Wright
32:02and of course Des Walker.
32:05Both of whom have been getting rave reviews out here
32:07by the various journalists
32:10who've picked their World Cup teams.
32:15This is Waddle.
32:18And this is Pearce.
32:21Martin Lineker waiting in the centre
32:23but that was behind the line, was it?
32:25Before, well, corner given.
32:28Reuter who challenged Pearce.
32:35Gascoigne has got time in the heat of a World Cup semi-final.
32:38You didn't see it on your picture
32:39to put his hand to his ear
32:41as if to say to the England supporters
32:42come on, let's hear you.
32:44He's so cool.
32:46Platt and Wright waiting in the middle.
32:51Pearce is there too.
32:54And Pearce gets a flick on
32:55and there's a stab at the far post.
32:56Lineker and Wright between them.
33:01And the old man
33:03is pleased to see that finish up where it did.
33:09Reuter.
33:16Long way to run then
33:17just to touch it and knock it 20 yards out of play.
33:19Of course, he's one of the fresher ones here.
33:21We see that.
33:23Reuter.
33:27Tinsman in the centre-forward position.
33:29Reuter not quite sure where to go.
33:33Tone to Bremer.
33:38Tinsman.
33:39Great save, Shilton.
33:41Terrific goalkeeping on the line.
33:44Defies Jürgen Tinsman.
33:47And just how good a save it was.
33:50We'll have to wait to see it again.
33:53It was a beautiful cross from Andy Bremer.
33:55It was bent back.
33:57Tinsman's downward header.
33:59Just look at that from Shilton.
34:05Bremer.
34:06Alcantara.
34:10Tinsman.
34:12Alcantara.
34:13Tinsman's in a dangerous position inside left.
34:15Tinsman!
34:16Missed it!
34:18Wonderful chance.
34:20And one that he should really have put away.
34:25People at home will be glad he didn't,
34:27but trying to be objective about it,
34:29that was, Trevor, a terrific opportunity.
34:33Good ball there by Alcantara.
34:34Clipped it over.
34:36Really trying to hit it first time.
34:38Very similar position,
34:40although perhaps not surrounded by defenders.
34:43And his attitude, it should be said, too.
34:45Here's Alcantara.
34:46And Tinsman has got away from right,
34:48and Parker's having to cover, which he did.
34:53Lineker's touchback to Beardsley.
34:56Gascoigne again.
34:59He won't be shaken off.
35:03And in the end, the German bench get up
35:05to test Gascoigne's last challenge.
35:08And he's so involved in this game.
35:14He has actually, Gascoigne, got a yellow card.
35:16Oh, dear.
35:17Oh, dear me.
35:19He's going to be out of the final
35:21if England get there.
35:23For the tackle on No. 14, Beardshold,
35:26Gascoigne has had his second yellow card of the competition,
35:29and here is a moment that almost brings tears to his eyes.
35:32You're quite right, he is nearly in tears.
35:34Look at him, he's shattered,
35:35because, really, there was no need to book at that stage.
35:39Legs are a bit tired, a little bit this time, a bit late,
35:42but it's been such a...
35:43It's all really gripped the match.
35:46I can't understand why he's booked in there.
35:48Paul Gascoigne absolutely shattered.
35:50Hopefully it doesn't affect his performance.
35:54Well, I've got to choose my words carefully here,
35:56but having seen a bit of the Germans,
35:57I do have to report again that the player...
36:00The player tackled, who goes down,
36:02sometimes gives the impression he's been absolutely crippled.
36:07And he's away now, but good covering by Walker,
36:11and Toon realises what an opportunity he missed.
36:22It'll be Pearce with the throw, short to Steven,
36:25back again to Pearce,
36:26Lineker hovering on the penalty spot.
36:28Support coming in there from Platt,
36:30who's moved in there now.
36:34Oh, Waddle, can he square it for Lineker?
36:36Waddle shoots!
36:37Oh, and the rebound off the post
36:39just beat David Platt.
36:45Wow.
36:48The referee has brought the first half of extra time to a close
36:51while we all caught our breath there,
36:53but Chris Waddle hit the post.
36:55Hit the post.
36:57I thought for a moment he was going to lay the ball across the box,
37:01but he did better than that,
37:02and look how Platt just couldn't make contact, could he?
37:06Came out like a rocket, didn't he?
37:08Trevor Steven headed it through,
37:09headed it towards the far post,
37:11and it's rocketed out.
37:12Nobody could even get near enough.
37:14I can't believe it.
37:15That would have been sweet, wouldn't it,
37:18just before the break,
37:19and would have given everyone a lift.
37:21Chris Waddle and two minds whether to square it,
37:23because there were,
37:24Gary Lineker waited in there,
37:25but it was a beautiful strike.
37:26The goalkeeper, Hilner there, couldn't get near it.
37:30And so we swapped around,
37:31and we still just can't get those noses in front.
37:34The stadium is so noisy, Trevor.
37:36I almost wondered there
37:37whether the referee had blown before Waddle had that shot.
37:39You know, it would have been...
37:40I don't want to tempt fate because it's history now,
37:42but I wonder what would have happened if it had gone in.
37:44Would it have been a goal?
37:45Because it stood the referee on the halfway line
37:47and was signaling,
37:49and as it turned out, it didn't go in the net,
37:52so we needn't discuss it further.
37:54It's still 1-1.
37:55We're in the second period of extra time,
37:57and here is Waddle again.
38:01Gascoigne.
38:10England are pushing forward with Beardsley,
38:12with Lineker, with Platt.
38:14The throw is being left to Paul Parker.
38:22Waddle.
38:28Throw to England again.
38:34Waddle.
38:36Trevor Stephen is the player on the far side
38:38with the header back in.
38:39Kohler with the header out.
38:40Matheus.
38:43Careless ball by Beardshold.
38:45This is Stephen.
38:48Offside.
38:49Pity. It was a terrific turning pass.
38:53There was only a whisker in that as well.
38:55Trevor Stephen running back to his goal,
38:57turned and hit ball down the line,
38:59and was probably just levelled.
39:01One of those that, as you can see,
39:03clipped in.
39:04Stuart Pearce turns.
39:05Unfortunately, we didn't get the clear picture
39:07of Stuart Pearce.
39:08Buchwald.
39:12And laid out by Klinsmann to Beardshold.
39:15Germans with players forward here.
39:18Reuter.
39:19Tone.
39:21Olaf Tone curled it and Peter Shilton
39:24made another important save.
39:28Springing to his left.
39:35Well, it's almost as if
39:36his 23 years has been building up to this.
39:41You couldn't really have written the script, could you?
39:44Not for both semifinals to go like that.
39:46Matheus.
39:47Bremer.
39:51Bremer.
39:53And it's Bremer again.
39:54Bremer.
39:55What a shot.
39:59That was like a missile.
40:05He's so dangerous when he gets in those positions.
40:07He can use left and right just as comfortable.
40:09There.
40:10Caught it very well.
40:11Peter Shilton.
40:13I think he was always in the middle of the goal.
40:15I'm sure we asked him at this moment.
40:17He said it was no trouble at all.
40:18And if it does go to penalties,
40:21both goalkeepers, Ilner and Shilton,
40:23have looked very, very good.
40:24But there's no one I'd rather have in my goal
40:27than Peter Shilton.
40:29The last thing I asked Bobby Robson
40:30before I left him at the hotel this afternoon
40:33was who was going to take the penalties
40:34if it came to it.
40:35And he nominated,
40:37in our conversation anyway,
40:38it may have changed,
40:39but he nominated Lineker, Beardsley,
40:43Gascoigne and Pearce.
40:46And I think Platt was on the ball now,
40:47but will it be necessary?
40:48Steven.
40:49Lineker's waiting in the middle.
40:51Oh, and Ilner was struggling
40:54to get the ball round for a corner.
40:59England
41:01scored late against Belgium
41:02to make penalties unnecessary.
41:05And as Ilner,
41:06well, just turns that Steven cross round the post.
41:09Can they do it again?
41:12Pearce is in there.
41:14Beardsley to take it.
41:18Right's at the back.
41:21And he's still there,
41:22but he didn't quite find Chris Waddlemark right.
41:24And now the Germans are breaking
41:25with Jürgen Klinsmann on the far side.
41:28And is he going to outpace Tez Walker or not?
41:30The angle's not good for Klinsmann.
41:33And Walker did fabulously well.
41:38Terrific defending by the Nottingham Forest player.
41:42And now,
41:43terrific defending by the Nottingham Forest player.
41:52Parker.
41:55Waddle.
41:57Three minutes left in extra time.
41:59One all between England and West Germany.
42:0413, Riedler.
42:07And still.
42:10And there's danger here.
42:12It's Buchwalt.
42:14Buchwalt!
42:15Hits the post!
42:16They've both hit the post now.
42:20Matthäus.
42:22Berthold.
42:24Corner.
42:27Peter Shilton beaten
42:29by Guido Buchwalt.
42:32And it comes back off the post,
42:34just as Waddle's shot did.
42:38The drama heightens still further.
42:40It's a corner for West Germany.
42:43Berthold's in there.
42:44So is Klinsmann.
42:45So is Alguenthaler.
42:49Klinsmann's there
42:50and didn't get the contact he wanted
42:52and it's gone
42:54behind for a goal kick.
42:58Palpitations are coming on there.
43:00Klinsmann, who
43:01tried to run Tez Walker just beforehand.
43:04Tez Walker did brilliant to keep him there.
43:06Then we had the shot on the edge of the area.
43:07Peter Shilton outside of the post.
43:09And then the corner.
43:10Again, Klinsmann
43:11looking to get above Walker
43:13but he was just doing enough
43:14to knock him off balance
43:15and it went past the post.
43:30It's penalties.
43:35José White of Brazil
43:37signals that the extra time is over.
43:41Paul Gascon on his knees
43:44and England move into new territory.
43:47Never before
43:48has the full England side
43:50been involved in a penalty shootout
43:51but I tell you what,
43:52there's some sporting gestures
43:53going on all over the pitch.
43:55Players from each side
43:56have got their arms around each other
43:57as if to say, well,
43:58whatever happens now,
43:59we've taken part
44:01in a memorable occasion
44:03and you wouldn't really want it
44:04settled this way.
44:05You certainly wouldn't want
44:06to lose it this way.
44:08But,
44:09another time we should debate this.
44:11Whether the World Cup final teams
44:13should both be determined
44:14by penalty shootouts
44:16is, I have to say,
44:17highly debatable
44:18but those are the rules
44:19of the competition.
44:20It is exciting.
44:26Gary Lineker
44:28whose nerve held
44:30so wonderfully well
44:31when he took the first one
44:32against Cameroon
44:34is now asked
44:35to beat the goalkeeper
44:37and give his side
44:39a lead at the start.
44:44And does.
44:46No hesitation.
44:48No question about the way
44:49he shaped up that Lineker
44:50knew he was going to score.
44:58He cracked that
45:00past Hildner
45:03who must have seen
45:04the penalty the other night
45:05I would think
45:06against the Cameroon
45:07and so maybe Lineker decided
45:09to put it in that side.
45:10Anyway,
45:11it's going to be Bremer now
45:13for West Germany.
45:24Scores.
45:261-1.
45:30Two very well taken penalties.
45:34Bremer found the
45:36spot right in the corner
45:37of the net
45:38although Shilton went
45:39the right way.
45:41And Peter Beardsley
45:44brought back into
45:45the England team today
45:47to take the second one.
45:49He has had penalty experience
45:50with Liverpool.
45:54Just to think
45:55England went 92 games
45:56under Bobby Robson
45:57without getting a penalty kick
45:59well over four years
46:01and now after two
46:02the other night
46:03they are facing
46:04five more today.
46:07Beardsley
46:09to take the second one.
46:14Scores.
46:23The goalkeeper tries
46:24to make himself
46:25as big as possible.
46:26He too went the right way
46:27but the height beat him really.
46:33Lothar Matthäus
46:35the West German captain
46:37out of your picture
46:39has gone forward
46:40to take the second kick
46:41for his team.
46:42He scored as I said
46:43in the quarter final.
46:45I wonder if Shilton
46:46saw where he put it.
46:49Well,
46:50there is no chance
46:51of saving that.
46:52It's 2-2
46:53all four converted.
46:55Matthäus for Germany.
47:03David Platt
47:05will take England's
47:06third penalty.
47:10What a responsibility
47:11for him.
47:12He wasn't even going to be
47:13in the team
47:14to a short time ago.
47:17Now can he make it
47:183-2?
47:22He can.
47:23Well, the goalkeepers
47:24are making every effort
47:25to save these.
47:26They are going the right way
47:28and the kicks are so good
47:29they just can't get to them.
47:33This is David Platt
47:34making it 3-2
47:35to England
47:36who've got the advantage
47:37of going first
47:38so the pressure is always
47:39on the German kicker.
47:41And it will be
47:42Karl-Heinz Riedler
47:44number 13.
47:46Would it be
47:47unlucky 13
47:48for West Germany?
47:56No, it's not.
47:58He takes it away
47:59beautifully.
48:00It's 3-all.
48:07Peter Shilton
48:08again going the right way.
48:09The goalkeeping,
48:10you can't fault it.
48:11They're reading
48:12the kicks
48:13perfectly
48:14but the power
48:15and the accuracy
48:16is beating them.
48:19Six
48:20really well-struck
48:21penalty kicks
48:22and now Stuart Pearce
48:24who's done the job
48:25for Nottingham Forest.
48:28Can he make it
48:29Can he do it
48:30for England?
48:40He can't!
48:42Ordner
48:43has made a save
48:47and the score remains
48:483-3
48:50and the Germans
48:51have a kick in hand.
48:53He saved it
48:54with his feet
48:55I think
48:56having made the dive.
48:57Yes, he did.
49:06Olaf Thun
49:08has got an opportunity here
49:10to put the Germans
49:114-3 up
49:12in the shootout.
49:23He has!
49:25They lead 4-3
49:26and that means
49:27that England
49:28have to score
49:29the next one
49:30to stay in it.
49:31What a responsibility
49:32for Chris Waddell now.
49:35He has to score
49:37the way that Tone did
49:39to make it 4-4
49:40and then it would be
49:41down to the last kick
49:43by the Germans.
49:48Ordner knows
49:49that if he keeps Waddell
49:50out here
49:51Germany are in the final
49:53and England are out.
49:59Would you want to be
50:00Chris Waddell now
50:01or even Stuart Pearce?
50:06And England
50:07are out of the World Cup.
50:09West Germany
50:10are through to the final
50:12on penalty kicks
50:15because England
50:16missed their
50:174th and 5th penalty
50:21and West Germany
50:22are in the World Cup final
50:24for the 3rd time running
50:26and the 5th time
50:27in 7 attempts
50:29and Bobby Robson's
50:30dream is shattered
50:32in the cruelest way possible
50:34and with it
50:35the hopes and dreams
50:36of every Englishman.
50:43No words are needed
50:44over an expression like that.
50:49Waddell belted the kick
50:50over the bar
50:52and so
50:53West Germany scored
50:55all 4 of their penalties
50:57England scored the first 3
50:59and missed the last 2
51:01and that is the sad
51:04and dramatic
51:05finish
51:06of England's
51:07World Cup adventure
51:08in Italy
51:10and Franz Beckenbauer
51:13having played in the
51:14World Cup final himself
51:16now takes his team there
51:17as a manager
51:19and Bobby Robson's career
51:20with the England team
51:22after 8 years
51:24ends sadly
51:25on the precipice
51:26of a great achievement
51:27which was just not to be.
