00:00Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has invaded Oban 94.5 FM radio station in Enugu
00:08state and arrested a journalist while she was on mid-air presenting a program.
00:13EFCC said it carried out the arrest after the journalist failed to honor its invitation over
00:19allegation of a Ponzi scheme made against her. But the station said EFCC took away more
00:26presenters and an official of the station claimed three persons were arrested.
00:32According to EFCC, the female journalist was released after she was taken to their office
00:38in Enugu state. According to Sahara reporters, EFCC said it carried out the operations on Monday
00:45morning. Close watchers said all efforts to allow the presenter finish her program proved abortive
00:52as the EFCC operatives insisted on going away with the suspect. The management of Oban 94.5 FM
01:00said in a statement that the EFCC agents invaded the studio around 5.45 pm,
01:06forcibly took away some staff and a presenter alongside seasoned communication equipment.
01:12The station assured its listeners that it is addressing the situation and will keep them
01:17informed through its platform. The management apologized for the disruption and expressed hope
01:23for a quick resolution of the issue. The board and management of Oban Radio 94.5 FM Enugu regrets
01:31the abrupt halting and disruption of our program at about 6.35 pm this Monday evening.
01:38Our women identifying as the EFCC had barged into the studio and interrupted the live program
01:45prime time, forcefully abducted our presenters and took away our communication equipment for
01:50reasons the vehemently refused to disclose. Whilst we are following up with the matter,
01:56we will continue to inform our dear listeners accordingly through this medium. Once again,
02:03we apologize for the unethical breaking into our live studio and disruption of your February
02:09programs and hope that the matter will be resolved as soon as possible and for whatever the reasons
02:14Oban Radio Management stated. Sahara reporters stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes
02:21Commission, EFCC, has clarified the raid on Oban 94.5 FM, a popular radio station in Enugu state.
02:30Speaking with Sahara reporters in a telephone chat, Dene Oyewole, the commission's head of
02:36media and publicity, set the record straight. According to Oyewole, the EFCC's Enugu Zonal
02:44Command only went to the station to arrest a journalist involved in a Ponzi fraud scheme
02:49after refusing to honor an invitation by the commission. The suspect, according to him,
02:56whose name wasn't disclosed, was taken into custody, made a statement, and was released
03:02immediately. Oyewole emphasized that nothing was removed from the station, contradicting earlier
03:09reports of seized equipment. He said, All the reports that our people, EFCC, moved to the
03:16neutral and carted their equipment, there's nothing like that. What happened is this,
03:22the fellow that was arrested is a suspect in Ponzi scheme where over 103 people were defrauded and
03:28unfortunately the fellow happened to be a staff of that radio station. Investigative heard,
03:35they have written letter to her and all of that but she did not respond and because of the severity
03:41of the matter, the number of people involved, just imagine somebody a journalist getting involved in
03:47Ponzi scheme. So they had to arrest her, brought her to our office to make a statement and they
03:54released her immediately. No equipment was taken, nothing was taken. It is normal way of our work.
04:02It is unfortunate that she is a journalist but whether a journalist or whoever,
04:07a suspect is a suspect. I am even worried that media staff would engage in such kind of thing.
