00:04APPLAUSE
00:31Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Thursday afternoon
00:34as we lay the foundation for another 15 rounds of letters and numbers,
00:38highlighting the best words and glossing over the worst ones.
00:42And, look, polishing it all up is our Rachel Riley. How are you?
00:45Highlighting, was it gloss?
00:47Yeah.
00:48Foundation. Are we talking make-up?
00:50I couldn't fit lipstick in. I tried my best, but I couldn't manage it.
00:53Yes, we're talking because of one of our new challengers today,
00:56because we've got two, after George became an OctoChamp yesterday,
00:59she's got her own line of toiletries and cosmetics.
01:02Really lovely story as well.
01:05Obviously, you've got a fantastic make-up artist who looks after you every day.
01:09Obviously. You see me before this.
01:11That's why I was going to say that, because you obviously don't have one off-air.
01:14But that's it. Your bag off-air is a lot smaller than your bag on-air.
01:18Well, my bag is now being, you know, taken apart by my children.
01:22A three-year-old, you know, she's got her designated palette
01:25because she just wants to copy Mummy.
01:27She's got her little lip balm lipstick.
01:29You get the baby standing there going...
01:31She wants some as well.
01:32I need advice from you.
01:33Go on, then.
01:34Ever since I started this show, I'm getting a flaky top lip
01:37because I've never worn as much make-up in my life.
01:39And I'm getting dry skin peeling off my top lip.
01:42You can't see it because I've got make-up on now,
01:44but in between recordings, I'm always having to put...
01:47What do I do? What do I need?
01:49Do you ever use a moisturiser?
01:51What's that?
01:52It's like the most basic element of skin care, I think. Moisturiser.
01:56Right. I'll look up moisturiser in the dictionary and see where we get.
01:59OK, the dictionary corner, then.
02:00Our J of the Day, who we know is so easy to make blush,
02:03it's Susie Dent.
02:04And alongside her all this week,
02:06well, I'm made up every time I get to introduce him,
02:08it's Geoff Stelling!
02:09Thanks, Colin.
02:12Right, lovely to have you here.
02:13Two new challengers, as I said.
02:15Tricia Lowther.
02:16Well, we've got a Scouser and a Glaswegian in exile
02:19because Tricia grew up in Liverpool but is now in Durham.
02:22You're the reason why...
02:23We're talking about toiletries or cosmetics
02:26because you make so many of your own
02:28and the story behind it is great.
02:30Tell me about why you decided, right, going to make these myself.
02:33Right, well, I got very sick a few years ago
02:36and it just made me look at everything that I put on my body
02:41and in my body and just looking at cosmetics,
02:45how many chemicals and things there are in them.
02:47I decided I was better off making my own,
02:50so I just use all organic ingredients
02:53and do my own moisturisers and perfumes, deodorants, things like that.
02:57Absolutely love it.
02:58I'll be your first customer if you want to start selling.
03:01Good luck today, Tricia.
03:02You're up against Scott McKechnie, as I say, originally from Glasgow.
03:05Hasn't lost a bit of the accent, by the way,
03:07despite living in Weston-super-Mare.
03:09How are you today?
03:10Very well, thank you.
03:11And do you make your own cosmetics?
03:12I have been, no.
03:14Too busy, 30 years in the British Transport Police.
03:18Is it an exciting job?
03:20It sounds to me like a dangerous job.
03:22Has its moments.
03:23Never a dull day, I would imagine.
03:25Well, Scott, let's see how you get on today.
03:27Good luck to both of you.
03:30OK, here we go, Tricia, letters.
03:33Hi, Rachel. Can I have a vowel, please?

04:57Remained.
04:58Remained.
05:00No N, unfortunately, Tricia. I'm sorry.
05:03Early nerves.
05:04The dictionary corner. Was there an eight without an N?
05:07Diatreme.
05:08Yes.
05:09Sounds to me like something you'd take for a dodgy stomach.
05:12It does.
05:13It does, whereas actually it is almost volcanic,
05:17so it's a geological term for a long vertical plug
05:21formed when gas-filled magma forced its way up through the strata.
05:26Of course.
05:27Of course.
05:28Let's get more letters. Scott, you're pigging for the first time.

06:49Six points each.
06:50Well done.
06:51Anything else, Geoff?
06:52I might be being unhinged by suggesting
06:54you might be able to have unhoused.
06:57Unhoused.
06:58Having no accommodation or shelter in the dictionary.
07:00Very good.
07:04It's almost like he's been here before, isn't it?
07:07First numbers round of the day.
07:09This is the most important part of any countdown.
07:1140 points maximum throughout just one episode.
07:14And you're going to pick these fours, Trish.
07:16Can I have three large, please?
07:19You can indeed.

08:14No.
08:15You could have got to one away, believe it or not.
08:17765, but this one was impossible.
08:19There you go.
08:20And it was.
08:21Impossible, so you can rest easy, both of you,
08:23as we get our first tea time teaser of the day.
08:25I like this one.
08:26Corny Sam.
08:27Corny Sam.
08:28Think about pill and Abba.
08:30Think about pill and Abba.
08:32APPLAUSE
08:47Welcome back.
08:48Corny Sam becomes acronyms, pill being Public Image Limited,
08:52Abba, of course, being the first names of the Swedish pop megastars.
08:59Well, we're taking a chance on both Trisha and Scott today,
09:02our two challengers hoping to become champions and win a teapot.
09:06And you're picking these letters, Scott.
09:08I have a consonant, please, Rachel.

10:22Festoon is a beautiful word. Trisha?
10:24Potions.
10:25Right, potions and festoon.
10:27I'm going to take them off, as they were said, so they are two sevens.
10:30Dictionary definition of festoon?
10:32Festoon, yeah, I might festoon you with garlands.
10:35It's to kind of decorate or cover.
10:38If only. What a great start to the day that would be,
10:41if somebody festooned you with a garland.
10:44Never going to happen, right.
10:46More letters. Trisha, you're choosing.
10:49Can I have a consonant, please?
10:51Thank you, Trisha. M.

12:09Simple as.
12:10Yes.
12:11Could have added one more to that, Scott.
12:13It had seeming.
12:15Is that as good as it gets?
12:17Yes, for us.
12:18Love it.
12:1919 plays 26.
12:20Nice close encounter, as you would expect with two challengers.
12:23And, Scott, you're picking the second numbers.
12:25I'll have one large and five from anywhere else, thank you.
12:28Thanks, Scott.
12:29One large one, five others.

12:39And the large one, 100.

13:14MUSIC STOPS
13:17Both look to be taking it quite easy there.
13:19Let's find out, Scott.
13:20537.
13:21537, Tricia?
13:22537.
13:23Well done, both of you.
13:24I thought so.
13:25Off you go, Scott.
13:26100 plus 6.
13:27106.
13:28Times 5.

13:30Plus 3, plus 3, plus 1.
13:32331.
13:33537.
13:34Lovely.
13:35You're using all those numbers, Tricia.
13:37Yeah, I did the same way.
13:38Let's have a wee look.
13:39Not that we don't trust you.
13:4110.8.
13:42APPLAUSE
13:45Loving today's show and, of course,
13:47having Geoff in Dictionary Corner this week
13:49has been a real treat to have you back.
13:51Well, everyone thinks they know Geoff
13:53because he's that type of presenter, isn't he?
13:55You just feel like you know him, and you're right.
13:57He's exactly the same off-air as he is on-air.
13:59A nightmare.
14:00No, he's exactly...
14:01What you see is what you get.
14:03But I got to know you a bit properly
14:05from the Prostate Cancer UK marathons that you walk,
14:08which, by the way, you do one, that's enough.
14:10I think you were doing 18 at one stage
14:12when I joined you for one.
14:14But that's been an incredible journey, pardon the pun.
14:17Yeah, it's been...
14:19Actually, it's been amazingly uplifting
14:21because you meet some absolutely incredible people.
14:24I'm not just talking about you, Colin,
14:26but other people as well.
14:27You're talking about Ian Dyer, obviously.
14:29Yeah, you know.
14:30But the people you walk with a lot of the time
14:32are people who have, you know,
14:34lost somebody to prostate cancer
14:36or have somebody who's, you know, living with prostate cancer
14:40or who have prostate cancer themselves.
14:42And you might imagine them to be sort of fairly gloomy,
14:45doer affairs, but nothing of the sort.
14:47They're absolutely wonderful, you know?
14:49And I'm thinking back, the second marathon that I did
14:55was from York to Leeds.
14:58You know, a marathon should be 26 miles.
15:00But on the way into Leeds, the group got so strung out
15:03because there were a couple of hundred people
15:05who had lost the leaders of that group.
15:08And, consequently, we took a wrong turn.
15:11We ended up doing 32 miles instead of 26 miles.
15:14It just wasn't funny at all.
15:16But there were a couple of great moments on that walk.
15:18Chris Kamara came on that particular leg.
15:21And Kammy turned up, you know, as if he'd just come out of a club.
15:25You know, patent leather shoes, tight jeans,
15:28white, pristine white shirt.
15:30But he was brilliant despite that.
15:32He's running back and forwards, up and down the line,
15:34trying to keep people going.
15:36And within that group, we had a group of squaddies.
15:39And I was talking to them.
15:40They'd been out on the North Yorkshire moors
15:42doing their training, you know, because it is a long way.
15:45You do have to train for it.
15:47And one Sunday afternoon, they said they were in the middle
15:51of the moors and suddenly, in the distance,
15:53they spotted what they thought was a pub.
15:56So they made a beeline for it, of course.
15:58And it soon became apparent it was a pub.
16:00When they got there, the car park was full.
16:02They went in through the open doors and burst in,
16:04desperate for a drink.
16:06Only to realise they had burst in on a wake.
16:09Anyway, seeing them, the widow said,
16:14Boys, boys, George would have loved you to be here at his wake.
16:19Come on in, have a few drinks on us.
16:22And that was where their training ended
16:24because five hours later, they staggered out of the pub.
16:27Anyway, they were great company on the walk, as people always are.
16:31Well, listen, you've done a great job. Thank you very much, Joe.
16:34APPLAUSE
16:37Back to the game. And, Tricia, you're up again.
16:40Hi, can I have a consonant, please?
16:42Thank you, Tricia. T

17:18Thanks, Rich.
17:31MUSIC
17:50How did you get on, Tricia?
17:52Six. Scott, what about you?
17:54Six. Six. Let's have the words.
17:56Stages. Stages.
17:58Pigeons. Nice, solid sixes.
18:01My expectations are high as we go on.
18:04It was tricky, though, wasn't it?
18:06I think Colin spotted one, because that was a play on words.
18:09A sense. There you go.
18:11Very good. Very good indeed.
18:14Right, more letters. Scott, will you do me the honours?
18:17Have a consonant, please, Rachel.
18:19Thank you, Scott. W

18:49And a final consonant, please?
18:51Final D.
18:53I know your game. Let's go. Half a minute.
18:56MUSIC PLAYS
19:23How did you get on, Scott? Seven.
19:25And Trish? Seven.
19:27Seven. Right, let's have it then. Scott?
19:29Deposit. Deposit.
19:31And Trisha? Dopiest.
19:33And dopiest. OK.
19:35To Dictionary Corner.
19:37Well, I sort of stepped on seven and then I just glanced down
19:40and I looked at my stomach and I was inspired,
19:44because podgiest is eight.
19:46Very good. Podgiest.
19:48APPLAUSE
19:50Right, there you go. 42-49.
19:53Not often you get two challengers in with all the nerves
19:56and get this type of standard, so we're loving it.
19:58Thank you to both of you. More numbers. Trisha?
20:01I'll try too large.
20:03Thank you, Trisha. Too large.
20:05Four little numbers coming up for you.
20:07And they are seven, nine, six, five.
20:12And the large one's 175.
20:14And the target to reach, 124.
20:18Look at that. Let's do it. One, two, four. Numbers up.
20:21MUSIC PLAYS
20:51One, two, four. Low target, Scott.
20:54One, two, four. And Trisha?
20:56One, two, three. One, two, three.
20:58One away. So, Scott, big ten points if you're right.
21:0075 divided by five is 15.
21:03Yep. Add it to the 100.
21:05150. Add the nine. Perfect.
21:07One, two, four. Well done.
21:09APPLAUSE
21:11All right, well, listen, let's take another break.
21:13Natal Con. Natal Con is our tea time teaser.
21:17Eric scored 50 in this part of the country.
21:20One for you, Rich.
21:21Eric scored 50 in this part of the country.
21:24MUSIC PLAYS
21:33APPLAUSE
21:40Welcome back. Very clever tea time teaser, this one.
21:42Natal Con. The clue was Eric scored 50 in this part of the country.
21:47The reference, of course, is the one of Rachel's heroes, Eric Cantona.
21:52And the answer is cantonal.
21:54So, first of all, the word itself.
21:56So, cantonal with an L on the end, Susie.
21:58Yes, so, you know, some countries are divided into cantons,
22:01such as Switzerland, for example,
22:03so you might have activity on a cantonal level
22:07as well as a national level.
22:09OK, so let's give Geoff this one.
22:11Geoff, how do we get cantonal from the clue
22:14that Eric scored 50 in this part of the country?
22:18I have no idea. I'm just here as the guest in Dictionary Corner.
22:22You're not meant to ask me difficult questions.
22:24Susie?
22:25Shall we look at the French for 50?
22:27No, you're close, Rachel.
22:28We're going Roman, not French.
22:30Roman numeral L.
22:32Very clever indeed.
22:33Very good.
22:34Very good indeed.

24:06Seven points each.
24:07No doubt about that.
24:08Was there anything better?
24:09Nothing at all.
24:10No.
24:11Balmier was ours, too.
24:13All sevens.
24:14So, listen, both of you are top of the class.

25:23Tricia?
25:24Five.
25:25A five, and Scott?
25:26Seven.
25:27A seven.
25:28The five, Tricia?
25:29Awoke.
25:30And let's see if the seven counts.
25:32Outwork.
25:33To outwork.
25:34You need two O's for outwork, unfortunately.
25:38It's there, but you would need the two O's.
25:40I'm sorry, Scott.
25:41Dictionary corner, talk to me.
25:43Scott was agonisingly close again.
25:45Outwear.
25:46Oh, yes?
25:47Yeah.
25:48Yeah.
25:49All right, 54-66 as we take a break.
25:51Four rounds left, still in the balance.
25:53Origins of words today.
25:55What are we talking about, Suze?
25:57I'm going to talk about goats, Colin.
25:59Gorgeous animals, and they caper through our English vocabulary.
26:03Caper itself goes back to the Latin, caper, meaning a goat.
26:07It gave us caprine, which means goat-like.
26:09It also gave us capricorn, the sign of the zodiac.
26:12Capricorn means goat horn.
26:14And the Italian island of Capri is so named for the goats
26:17that once grazed on it, much as the Canary Islands
26:20are not named after canaries.
26:22Canaries did come from the islands, but they were named
26:24after the wild dogs that once inhabited the islands,
26:27and canis in Latin is dog.
26:30A cabriolet, back to goats.
26:32Light, two-wheeled vehicle, once upon a time drawn by a horse,
26:35but very jaunty in its motion,
26:37which must have reminded somebody, again, of a goat's leap.
26:42And, again, it goes back to that Latin for a goat.
26:45That cabriolet, incidentally, shortened to cab,
26:47so when we take a taxi cab, we are also paying homage to a goat.
26:51A scapegoat was an actual goat.
26:54Once, you will find in the Book of Leviticus, in the Bible,
26:57that God tells Moses to take two goats, to sacrifice one,
27:01and then to lay the sins of the people metaphorically upon the other
27:05and to send it out into the wilderness.
27:07So it was the one that was sent out and thought to carry
27:11all the sins of someone else.
27:13So, although it survived, it was burdened by the blame, if you like,
27:17which is where we get the modern idea of a scapegoat.
27:20And, finally, we end up with the goat of the greatest of all time
27:25that we hear all the time in commentary now,
27:27which I always think is a little bit unfortunate.
27:29I get it as an acronym, but I'm not sure I'd ever want to be called a goat.
27:36Right, more letters. Scott, will you do me the honours?
27:39Have a consonant, please, Rachel.
27:41Thank you, Scott.
27:43D
27:44And another, please.

28:57Lovely words. Yeah, I like both of those.

29:02No. I think we'll stick with those beautiful ones.
29:04That'll do. All right.
29:0561, 73.
29:07And, Tricia, you're going to decide what letters we play with next.

30:28No, got it wrong. Sorry.
30:29What's the seven?
30:30Dario.
30:31Dario. Yes, cooking pot.
30:33Yeah, great countdown words.
30:34She's sautéed.
30:35She's like a mannequin.
30:36She's sautéed, yeah, and she's darioled.
30:38She's cooking up a storm over there.
30:40What a word to get.
30:41Anything else jump out?
30:43Ordinal was seven as well,
30:45but that's just a great word from Tricia,
30:47not one I was familiar with.
30:49Oh.
30:50Fantastic, yeah.
30:51Good countdown word, that one.
30:52Tricia, cooking on gas at the moment.
30:54Scott, see if you can turn the head up with the last numbers.
30:56One large, please, Rachel.
30:58Yeah, and the numbers have been kind to you so far.
31:00Let's see if you can avoid that crucial conundrum.
31:02Tricia's hoping not.
31:03Final numbers of the day.
31:05Seven.
31:06Nine.
31:08Six.
31:09Six.

31:55And you've nailed it. Let's hear it.
31:57Um, six times six.
32:00Six times six is 36.
32:03Times 25.
32:05Times 25 is 900.
32:07Ten times nine is 90. Add that on.
32:10Yeah.
32:11I've used the nine twice.
32:13Oh!
32:14Oh!
32:15The realisation towards the end.
32:17What a shame, what a shame.
32:19So, Scott, two away for seven points,
32:22which actually would negate a crucial countdown conundrum.
32:25You take your first win and the teapot. Let's hear it.
32:28Six times six is 36.
32:30Six.
32:31Times 25 is 900.
32:33Again, 900.
32:35And ten times nine is 90.
32:38So, exactly the same as here with 990.
32:40But what about that 988?
32:42Only using the nine once, Rich. Can you get there?
32:45I've got many ways for one away, so you have to come back to me.
32:48We'll do indeed. We'll do indeed.
32:50Well, listen, ten points up for grabs.
32:52It's not a crucial countdown conundrum,
32:54but it's been a fantastic game.
32:56Let's see how you get on.
32:57Tricia and Scott, fingers on the buzzers.
32:59Let's reveal this Thursday afternoon's countdown conundrum.
33:13Scott?
33:14Splendour.
33:15Let's have a look.
33:17Very good.
33:20Splendiferous, Scott.
33:2290 points on your debut
33:24against a really, really strong fellow challenger.
33:28And, Tricia, it was like the end wasn't there.
33:31Using the nine twice.
33:33It was just tiny margins, wasn't it?
33:35Listen, you get the goodie bag but not the teapot.
33:37Thank you for being here.
33:38Scott, we'll see you tomorrow. I've high hopes for you.
33:41That was, honestly, you're playing such a good contestant today.
33:44You managed to get 90 points for your first win.
33:46I think we'll see a century tomorrow.
33:48We will find out. See you tomorrow.
33:51Jeff, your last day.
33:52You haven't regretted it yet, coming back?
33:54Oh, no, I've loved it.
33:55I've got no work to do.
33:56You do all the work.
33:57I just sit over here and chat to Susie.
33:59Listen, I talk nonsense.
34:00These two do all the work.
34:02Susie, more from you tomorrow.
34:03Yeah, look forward to that.
34:04The work hasn't finished yet for Rachel.
34:06Did you nail it?
34:07Yeah, loads of factors for this one,
34:09but the ones you want.
34:10Six times seven is 42.
34:13Add 10 is 52.
34:15And then 25 minus the second six is 19,
34:18and times them together, 988.
34:24What a way to go out.
34:25What a lovely show.
34:26Two more members of the Countdown family.
