00:12The tragic cause of former One Direction singer Liam Payne's death has been revealed.

00:17The singer was found dead at the Casa Sur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires,

00:21Argentina, after falling from a third floor balcony.

00:25Authorities confirmed that Payne fell approximately 13 to 14 metres and suffered

00:30injuries incompatible with life, according to Alberto Crescenti,

00:34head of the city's emergency medical system.

00:37The exact circumstances surrounding Payne's fall are still under investigation,

00:42and an autopsy is expected to provide further clarity.

00:45It remains unknown whether the fall was accidental or intentional.

00:49Before his death, Payne was reportedly acting erratically in the hotel lobby,

00:54with witnesses describing him as aggressive.

00:57Reports suggest that he had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol

01:27Payne had long struggled with addiction issues and had previously spoken openly

01:31about battling alcohol and prescription drug dependency,

01:35along with experiencing severe suicidal thoughts.

01:38His passing comes just days after he reunited with former bandmate Niall Horan,

01:43who was performing in a concert in Buenos Aires.

01:46The rest of the boys really stood by me and when I needed them most,

01:49they kind of came to the rescue, even Zayn as well,

01:52which is why I did send him a little thank you online, actually.

01:55Payne leaves behind his seven-year-old son, Bear, whom he shares with singer Cheryl Cole,

02:00and had been dating influencer Kate Cassidy at the time of his death,

02:04though she had reportedly left Argentina days earlier.

02:07Fans have gathered outside the hotel to pay tribute to the beloved singer,

02:12holding a candlelight vigil in his honour as authorities
