00:00If you were to try to package intensity and electricity in just pure explosiveness into one package, that would have been the Macho Man Randy Savage.
00:14Oh my God, Macho Man. It's a stick of dynamite that is lit and the fuse has gotten very short.
00:23A hundred percent of our menus will come at you with a hundred percent.
00:26The Macho Man Randy Savage, he was loud. The cream of the crop. He was colorful. He was intense. Oh yeah. Miss Elizabeth was none.
00:37Elizabeth was an icon and a role model for so many women. Her character was something that brought a lot of feeling and emotion to the matches.
00:44Elizabeth, I love you.
00:47Randy, Macho Man Savage and Miss Elizabeth were wrestling royalty and their rollercoaster romance captivated audiences around the world.
00:56It's Bonnie and Clyde. It's Romeo and Juliet. They were the first male, female package that was created in that new WWF model. They were the first and they were the best.
01:11Disfunctional as it may have been in some respects, but I saw it. It's a love story.
01:20On this episode, art imitates life as we examine a fictional love story surrounding a real life marriage that explodes beyond the ring with tragic consequences.
01:38Well first actually tell us who you are. I don't want to do that. Okay.
01:42Look at how ripped I was. Look at that belly. Good God. It's a fighting shape right there.
01:49My name is Bruce Pritchard and I have actually worked in the wrestling business for about 45 years.
01:55First time I met Randy Savage was in 1987 in Houston, Texas. Randy got into the wrestling business. He's a second generation wrestler.
02:05His father, Angelo Poffo, was one of the greats. And Angelo had a wrestling territory. It was considered back in the day an outlaw wrestling territory.
02:17Can't do nothing against the Macho Man yet. Number one professional wrestler. Complete mental insanity yet.
02:24What a champion, Randy. You're going down in history as the greatest. The greatest champion.
02:30I also broke this chair by sitting down.
02:33Then all of a sudden it's time for Randy Savage to appear.
02:37Jimmy, baby, the best thing that you can do is probably just stand back and let the Macho Man talk because there's nothing that you could say that I couldn't say better myself.
02:44There was a period in the wrestling business where if you were crazy on screen, you were crazy off screen. You had to live your gimmick.
02:53And Randy played crazy really well. He lived it 24-7.
03:00Just personally, do you think it'd be okay if I came out that Randy was a bedwetter?
03:06What was it like growing up with Randy as a brother?
03:12He's the same as any other alpha male, except his dial is not only past ten, but it's broken and it's gone off the hinges.
03:22I was upstaged every day, but I knew it was getting over, so I was proud to be holding the rope.
03:28He had a dream that he could be a villain, a bad guy, a ruffian.
03:32He wanted to be an antagonist because he felt he had more creativity than just being the pawn of the villain.
03:40Randy would take a lot of risks. He would say, yeah, I stared into a candle for two hours.
03:47Stared into a candle for about two hours and got my head together.
03:53Some people loved him, some people hated him, but everybody respected him.
03:57Because when you see that kind of athleticism, you have to buy into it.
04:05So this is my autograph table. Okay, this was another night where I think everybody was drinking too much red wine.
04:11And right here is that little saying. I'll never know what he meant by it, but that's what Macho carved into the table.
04:19And it used to say, whatever it takes.
04:22I'm Linda Bollea, married to my ex-husband, professional wrestler Hulk Hogan for 25 years.
04:29Oh, that was back when we loved each other. In the olden days.
04:33So once I met Miss Elizabeth, we ended up being friends because I was really the only other female on the road.
04:39Elizabeth was from Frankfort, Kentucky. Good upbringing.
04:43She addressed her mom as mother and she said, we were broke. My dad left early.
04:49It was just me and my mom and my brother. And money was always really tight.
04:53There was a gym called Cente Sports Center and Randy worked out there.
04:57And then one fine day, a new girl came and that was Elizabeth Hewlett.
05:03And she said Randy was in the gym about six in the morning and she's working the front desk.
05:07And he comes in and she goes, oh my, your eyes are so red.
05:12And he goes, you should see them from this side. And I looked at Liz and said, that did it for you?
05:17That one line, like real duet? My name is Scott Oliver Hall.
05:22I also was wrestled as Razor Ramon, the bad guy. I don't know.
05:26If I was a chick, I'd have banged Randy. I thought he was cool as hell.
05:30Randy would always tell the story that it was love at first sight.
05:33Yeah, she saw me and fell in love. What more could she want?
05:37Liz would always be like, it took a little while to get used to it.
05:43She was beautiful. She was phenomenal and she was excellent.
05:46What a nice person too. And I think that came across on television.
05:51Elizabeth got involved in ICW as an announcer and she also helped with the editing.
05:57Because it was a mom and pop shop, we did everything.
06:00And she was adaptable and brilliant and very quick to learn.
06:05Their first wedding was in Frankfort, Kentucky at the home of Elizabeth's mother.
06:12And that was about six months before Randy made his debut with WWE.
06:18All right, this is going to be a Jimmy Hart one. Here we go.
06:20Hey, it's me, the mouth of the south, Jimmy Hart. The sun is shining. Life is great.
06:25There's Randy and myself and Hulk and WCW when I managed them for a few matches.
06:30The rest was history. He goes, how's New York? I said, it's great.
06:33I said, look, they just saw your tapes. They want you in New York.
06:36The macho man, Randy Savage, who is quite a competitor making his World Wrestling Federation debut.
06:43Vince and Linda McMahon had come down to Florida to get the contract signed before WrestleMania one.
06:51Is that Vince? Oh my gosh. Whoa.
06:53When Vince took over, he went around every territory and took the very best of what was available.
06:58He made you bigger than life.
07:01Vince was taking it to a whole completely new level that none of us were ready for or even knew about or used to.
07:08And we were all in for a big, huge learning curve.
07:11You know, when Macho came on board, Vince was like, well, you know, we really want your character to have a valet, a woman, a manager.
07:19Yeah, I think Randy probably just sat down and said, look, you know, I want to come up here and I think I can make you money in this territory.
07:25Can we work a spot out for Liz? Because she's going to go with me on the road. She's going to be with me.
07:30Randy, if he loves somebody, whether it was his brother or whether it was Liz or whoever, he was going to be very loyal to them.
07:36Macho man is at this peak right now. And we don't know who the manager is going to be.
07:44They fell in love with her as soon as she opened up the door and stepped into wrestling history.
07:50Oh, oh, oh.
07:55Liz was very demure, very quiet, gentle soul.
08:01The person and the character were really one in the same.
08:04As far as the persona of the Macho Man and the package of the Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth was they were two opposites.
08:14And Randy so intense and Elizabeth so subdued.
08:18They wanted you to love Elizabeth and hate Randy.
08:22Picture of Elizabeth, no picture of the Macho Man.
08:25That's very, very, very bad.
08:28Elizabeth Randy would bring her out.
08:30She'd stand at ringside. He'd get in a ring and circle around.
08:33Then you get out. No, I told you to stand here.
08:35And people were hating Randy just for browbeating the beautiful young girl like you.
08:39You could do better than him, honey. Get away from him.
08:42And there would be times that Randy would give Liz a look and just turn his head and give her those eyes.
08:49And she would almost be subservient.
08:51Macho Man Randy Savage, isn't that right, Elizabeth?
08:54That's right, Randy.
08:55Shut up and keep piloting. If I lose tonight, it's your fault.
08:58Each time he did it, they'd just, oh, you sorry son of a, you know.
09:02And that's exactly what they wanted.
09:04And you want Liz to see the light.
09:06But Liz, underneath this, you're seeing, man, she loves her man.
09:11And you infer that Randy mistreats her, but he never really does.
09:18He's just a little intense.
09:20By the spring of 1987, Elizabeth and Randy are red hot.
09:24They're about to make history in front of a record-breaking crowd of 93,000 fans.
09:28WrestleMania III was, at the time, the largest indoor attendance record.
09:33I mean, the largest gathering indoor of any event in the world.
09:37Oh, Jesus.
09:39It's unbelievable, man.
09:4190,000 people.
09:43I had Alice Cooper with me.
09:45I mean, the electricity from the crowd was unbelievable.
09:48I mean, your skin is crawling.
09:51It feels like your hair is growing.
09:53The Randy Savage-Ricky Steamboat match, WrestleMania III,
09:56I think a lot of people consider one of the greatest matches of all time.
09:59Two of the greatest athletes that I have ever seen in my life.
10:04All that athleticism, all the drama, all that excitement,
10:09it killed him that he could never surpass that match.
10:12He was a perfectionist, and perfectionists are never happy.
10:16The thing with Savage, I learned later on, of course,
10:19when I started working with Savage, was trying to hold him down.
10:24Because he always wanted to give more.
10:27Well, sometimes you can give too much.
10:30Two years after their debut, Randy and Elizabeth are taking the WWF by storm.
10:35But a surprising twist in their storyline
10:38would propel them to the top of the wrestling world.
10:44I pulled out a bunch of pictures I tried to find of Liz and Randy.
10:48This is sweet.
10:50This is Randy and Liz.
10:52This was just at the condo. We were just hanging out in Florida.
10:54Polaroid picture.
10:56Macho.
10:58Picture Elizabeth. So sweet.
11:00So Macho Man, he always kept Elizabeth in the dressing room.
11:03So nobody really knew her.
11:05Then one night, Macho came into our dressing room and said,
11:09Where's Linda?
11:11And Liz needs some help with her hair.
11:16And she had her hair kind of coiffed and tightly curled.
11:20And it was just sort of church girl.
11:22And I said, Bitch, you need to just bring that stuff out.
11:25She started getting her hair teased up and kind of stacked it out.
11:28She's like, Oh yeah, I like that.
11:30Once we all realized that, Hey, I live in Tampa.
11:32Oh, you live in Tampa? Yeah, I live in Fleur. I live in Largo.
11:35We all kind of lived in this area.
11:37So we thought, Hey, let's all get together.
11:39It was nice because when we did get a few days off,
11:42I could call on her and she could call on me.
11:44And we could either go shopping or we could hit the beach.
11:47And it was just great because at least you had somebody to do something with.
11:51Hulk would have big parties over there and invite everybody.
11:54Randy and Liz would go to it.
11:55And it seems like that's when she was the most happiest,
11:58when she could be out around the people and kind of be herself.
12:01We'd be barbecuing in the backyard the weekend before.
12:04Terry would always kind of lay it out.
12:06Here's how I want to run it.
12:07And then Randy would throw in some ideas.
12:09And Liz would always just go along with whatever, talking about the angle.
12:13The hotter the heel and people after a while will begin to respect you.
12:18And Randy was so good, he was hard to boo.
12:21The audience liked him and it was hard to ignore.
12:23Randy Savage was really catching on as a babyface.
12:27And people had grown to really love the Macho Man.
12:33By the end of 1987, the fans' love for Randy Savage
12:36inspires a revelation in Vince McMahon.
12:39A partnership with the company's top hero
12:41to create a team unlike anything pro wrestling has ever seen.
12:45The two biggest names in the wrestling business at that time,
12:47the Combined Forces, you know,
12:49the madness in Hulkamania combining forces.
12:52My brother with the madness and the mania.
12:54Mega powers, yeah!
12:56I mean, who's going to match up against them?
12:58By the summer of 1988, Hogan and Savage with Elizabeth
13:01as their manager appear invincible.
13:03They've destroyed all challengers
13:05and the only place left to turn is on each other.
13:08What we knew is that we would have the mega powers explode.
13:10You create the mega powers for the mega powers to explode.
13:14Especially when one is a paranoid schizophrenic
13:17and the other is the all-American dude.
13:20And what is the easiest thing for two men to argue?
13:26A woman.
13:27SummerSlam 1988.
13:28Randy hoists Liz up on his shoulder and goes around
13:31and when he does, there's like a little slip.
13:33Hulk puts his hand up, steadier.
13:36Freeze it! Look at how long his hand is on Elizabeth.
13:41Huh?
13:42Nobody touches Elizabeth.
13:44Uh-uh.
13:45There was Hulk, say your prayers, take your vitamins, you know.
13:48Here's the American flag and here's Randy going,
13:51you know, I don't think you're as truthful
13:53as everybody thinks you really are.
13:55They don't realize that underneath, he's been boiling.
13:58You've got luck in your eyes
14:01and in your black heart for Elizabeth.
14:04Randy is the jealous, raving lunatic
14:07and Hulk is the best friend
14:09who's trying to screw his best friend's girl.
14:11Picked her up and put Elizabeth where she has never been before.
14:16On top of another man's shoulder.
14:19It's easy for him to blow it out of proportion
14:21because you can tell the jealousy side of it.
14:24He's blinded by love and he's blinded by rage.
14:27He's paranoid.
14:28He's got the championship.
14:30He's got the whole world on his back.
14:32So of course everybody's trying to knock him off,
14:34even his best friend.
14:35His best friend's not only trying to knock him off,
14:37he's trying to take my girl.
14:38They were really playing off of Randy's paranoia
14:40and it was real, so that's what made it really work.
14:42Twin Towers, Big Boss Man and Hakeem
14:45against Randy and Hulk, the mega powers.
14:47But there was a point in the match where Randy took a bump out
14:51and ended up taking Liz out.
14:54Hulk sees that she's hurt,
14:56carries her back to get her help.
14:59You're hovering over her, over the bed.
15:01How dare you?
15:03I'm out there fighting for my life.
15:06But you're more concerned about her.
15:08It all makes sense now.
15:09When you take a look at the madness's eyes,
15:12all you're going to see is complete and utter rage.
15:21Match made.
15:23What corner is Elizabeth going to be in?
15:26A lot of people wondered,
15:27did Randy really control her in and out of the ring?
15:30Absolutely.
15:31Randy, very protective of my god.
15:35You have no idea.
15:38He would get visibly upset with anybody
15:41that tried to talk to her or carry on a conversation with her.
15:46He just did not like it.
15:48When they would be getting ready for an event,
15:51we didn't want any malfunctions with the wardrobe,
15:54so he would literally take the tape
15:57and, like, wrap it all around her whole body
16:00and then the other big thing was,
16:02because she was always in a short dress,
16:05and entering the ring over the rope.
16:06And was she going to go over the second rope?
16:08She should go under it.
16:09This was all a big, huge thing for Randy
16:11because this was his wife.
16:12He loved and respected her,
16:13and he didn't want anybody to be making fun of her.
16:16He was definitely in charge of that relationship,
16:19and she was just the tag-along.
16:21And I think that that started to grow on her.
16:24I think that started to just unnerve her.
16:26That may have been where a lot of the issues started.
16:30In WrestleMania 5,
16:31are you going to be in the Macho Man?
16:33Randy Savage is cornered.
16:35When you take real-life situations
16:37and you put it in front of the camera,
16:40it's great because it's usually very relatable.
16:43No! No!
16:45However, when you take your real-life feelings
16:49and you put them on camera,
16:50and you make it a part of a storyline,
16:53they don't know you.
16:54They don't know what you guys do when the door's shut at night.
16:59They have no clue.
17:00But they know you're really married,
17:02and they know what you said on TV,
17:04you sorry son of a bitch.
17:06Life imitating art,
17:09and sometimes art imitates life.
17:12And then you get really fucked up.
17:19Being on the road 24-7 with your spouse,
17:22it's not an easy task.
17:24You know, Elizabeth, as his wife,
17:27had those same duties as I did.
17:29I did travel with Randy and Liz a lot,
17:32and their relationship was that of a married couple on the road.
17:37They didn't go out and party,
17:38went back to the room, went to bed,
17:40and they had their privacy.
17:42You'd get back to the room,
17:43and she would have to scrub the blood off the boots
17:46like I did have to Terry's.
17:48From their wrestling match,
17:49you know, you'd put the wrestling boots
17:51in the bathtub of the hotel
17:52and wash them off, get all the blood off,
17:54because they had to wear them the next night.
17:56And I'm sure he probably wanted to get laid,
17:58and I'm sure she probably didn't.
18:00You know, and maybe she did and he didn't.
18:02Then, her, unlike me,
18:04she has to think about herself.
18:06What the hell dress is she going to wear?
18:08I had my wife involved for a while,
18:10and it's brutal, man,
18:11having your wife around the guys.
18:12They did practical jokes that were cruel.
18:15I'm telling you,
18:16they used people's suitcases as toilets.
18:20There were no boundaries.
18:21That was the problem.
18:22I mean, you know,
18:23cutting somebody's hair off while they're passed out.
18:25I mean, I wouldn't want my wife around that shit.
18:27The pattern seemed to be that Randy wanted
18:29to keep Elizabeth away from the boys
18:32as much as possible, and, you know,
18:35I don't blame him, really.
18:37Randy being so intense
18:38and being so watchful over her,
18:40she couldn't have freedom,
18:42and I think you can't smother somebody
18:45all the time like that.
18:46Elizabeth wanted to leave the road,
18:49and she wanted Randy to quit.
18:51Randy wasn't done yet.
18:52Randy was still enjoying it.
18:54I knew she needed to have more socialization
18:57and more friends,
18:58and she missed having the normal life,
19:00but Liz apparently was looking for something more than that
19:04than I realized at the time.
19:06By 1990, an exhausted Elizabeth
19:09asked for some time off the road,
19:10and the WWF sees this as an opportunity
19:13to reinvent the Macho Man
19:14into a new kind of villain.
19:16We did Randy as the heel.
19:18We made Randy the Macho King
19:20and thought that Sensational Sherry,
19:22to be his manager, another female,
19:24and make him the Queen.
19:25Sherry was a women's wrestler,
19:27and the guys loved working with Sherry
19:29because she could take it.
19:30She was tough as nails.
19:32Queen Sherry adds a whole new dimension
19:34to the Macho Man's character,
19:35but the fans demand to see wrestling first lady
19:38back in her rightful place.
19:40Every day that Randy spent with Sherry,
19:43everybody said,
19:44let's bring Elizabeth.
19:45Where's Elizabeth? Where's Elizabeth?
19:46I mean, the people hungered for Elizabeth.
19:49Going into WrestleMania,
19:50Randy was looking to take the summer off.
19:52He and Liz were looking to spend time together
19:55as husband and wife,
19:56not being on the road all the time.
19:59So the idea was,
20:01WrestleMania VII have a career match
20:04with the Ultimate Warrior.
20:05If Warrior lost, he was gone.
20:07If Randy lost, he was gone.
20:08We had shown earlier in the night
20:10that in attendance that night
20:13was Elizabeth in the crowd,
20:15sitting like in the fourth row.
20:16And when Sherry started to kick Randy
20:19and go after Randy,
20:20Liz made her way to the ring
20:22and pulled Sherry off.
20:23And, you know, Liz is there fighting for her man.
20:26And people are slowly applauding
20:29and you see grown men with tears in their eyes.
20:33That's emotional. That's good stuff.
20:35We got them.
20:37Because they felt it, you know,
20:39and people could feel that too, you know,
20:41getting back together,
20:42getting back to the one you really love.
20:45Elizabeth,
20:48will you marry me?
20:51Despite being married in real life
20:53for seven years,
20:54which was kept secret from fans,
20:56Randy and Elizabeth's characters
20:57finally tied the knot on live television
20:59on August the 26th, 1991.
21:02Oh, yeah.
21:05And they were excited.
21:06I mean, they were like two kids
21:09planning for their wedding.
21:10I think it was just the first time
21:12you ever saw the Macho Man
21:13break down and have a human emotion
21:15other than anger.
21:16You saw him actually happy
21:17and you saw him emotionally care for someone outwardly
21:21which you had never seen before.
21:24Liz and Randy are having this
21:26beautiful wedding ceremony.
21:29Now cue the devil.
21:33They did the reception and bullshit.
21:35Yeah!
21:36Putting the snake in the box
21:37and all that crap.
21:38They got it started.
21:39They kicked it off.
21:4014, 15-foot king cobra.
21:43Look at that son of a bitch.
21:45Beautiful, beautiful fucking animal.
21:48Randy came to me.
21:50He said,
21:51so tonight I hear we're gonna do
21:53something a little different.
21:56I'm like, yeah, man.
21:57Snakes bite, usually.
21:59Yeah.
22:00So, uh,
22:01has the snake been fixed?
22:04Fuck yeah.
22:06It's a fucking cobra, you dumb shit.
22:09Of course it's been fixed.
22:11Maybe it has and maybe it hasn't.
22:14How about the snake biting you first?
22:17Fuck you, man.
22:18I ain't fucking with you.
22:19Oh, you don't want it to bite you.
22:22Because if you won't let the snake bite you,
22:23that tells me it hasn't been fixed.
22:26He's dead fucking serious, man.
22:28So I went and got the snake,
22:30rolled up my pants leg and let it bite me.
22:33And he's like,
22:34don't move.
22:35Don't take no pills.
22:36Don't take no antidote.
22:37Don't take no serums.
22:39No fucking nothing, brother.
22:41Fuck.
22:42For like 20 minutes, man,
22:43he's like,
22:44I'm gonna get you okay.
22:45How you feel, man?
22:47I'm a bit pissed off right now,
22:48to be honest with you.
22:50So it was time for that snake to bite him.
22:51I got the snake out,
22:52turned my back to him,
22:54and I fucking paintbrushed the shit out of that snake.
22:57Pissed head off.
22:59And then whenever I turned around,
23:00that snake was just,
23:01you know,
23:03he was ready.
23:05And I got him close to Randy
23:06and he latched on
23:07and would not let go.
23:10I mean,
23:11the time that you've seen it on television
23:13was nothing to the real time.
23:15It went on forever.
23:17Dent's wound up sending the listeners down.
23:19Get the snake off of him.
23:21Get it off of him.
23:22Dent said,
23:23now.
23:24I'm like,
23:25I'm fucking trying.
23:26And I'm pulling on the snake
23:27and it wouldn't let go.
23:28It's just chewing on me.
23:29Man, it's like anything else.
23:30First time it's ever been done.
23:32Shocks people, man.
23:33The visual, you know.
23:35Bottom line is,
23:36nobody ever felt sorry for Randy.
23:38They felt sorry for her.
23:40It's not a good situation.
23:42Like with me,
23:43whenever I slapped Elizabeth.
23:45And then they tried to go home
23:48to see her family.
23:50Grandpa meets him on the porch
23:51and says,
23:52you're not coming in this house, boy.
23:54He promised us
23:55he'd always protect our little girl.
23:57The only way he could gain access
23:59back into their home
24:01was basically kicking my ass
24:03and getting even, so to speak.
24:06These are Tennessee folks, bro.
24:08You know,
24:09wrestling's real.
24:10People are fake.
24:12What was the state
24:13of their relationship at the time
24:14that they were getting married again?
24:15I would say tumultuous.
24:17On the verge of breaking up.
24:21So Terry had been cast in a movie
24:23called Mr. Nanny.
24:24It required us to be down in Miami
24:26for about eight weeks.
24:27So Liz called and goes,
24:29when are you going to be back home?
24:30And I said,
24:31I'm going back the next week.
24:32She's like, oh.
24:33She's like, Randy, can I please go?
24:35I heard her talking to him
24:36on the back of the phone.
24:37She's like, can I please go?
24:38I want to go help Linda with the kids.
24:40I just want to go see them
24:41and hang out with Nick and Brooke
24:42in the pool and stuff.
24:43And he's like,
24:44well, only if you're going to be babysitting
24:46and you're going to be with Linda.
24:48She flew down with us.
24:49It was so much fun.
24:50She helped me unload the kids.
24:51We got the toys.
24:52We were hanging out.
24:53We're all going to go out to dinner,
24:54you know?
24:55I said, so I'll just go get ready,
24:56do whatever,
24:57come back from your workout
24:58or whatever at 7.30.
25:00I'm thinking, like,
25:01are we going to do our makeup together
25:02and our hair together,
25:03which is what we always did.
25:04So I'm kind of, like,
25:05knocking on her door
25:06and I see the light is on.
25:08I can see under the door,
25:10but she's not answering.
25:12Where's Liz?
25:18In 1992,
25:19leaving her husband Randy Savage behind,
25:21Elizabeth travels alone to Miami
25:23to stay with Hulk Hogan
25:25and his wife Linda.
25:27Terry had to film the next morning
25:29and the whole next day goes on
25:30and I see her at the pool.
25:31I'm like, Liz, where were you?
25:33You know, we were worried about you.
25:34She's like, oh, well,
25:35I met this other gentleman
25:36that lives in the building
25:37and he has an extra room
25:39here in the building
25:40and he thought maybe
25:41I'd want to take it.
25:43The way I heard the story
25:44was that Liz wanted away from Randy
25:46and so she contacted Hulk's wife Linda
25:49and went and stayed with them.
25:52Now, meanwhile,
25:53Randy is freaking out
25:54because he doesn't know
25:55where the love of his life is.
25:58Randy kept calling my room
25:59wanting to talk to Liz
26:01and I was like, Liz is not here.
26:04I didn't say she had her home room.
26:05I just said she's not here.
26:06I think she's with friends
26:07or something like that.
26:08He goes, well, where is she?
26:09I was like, she's not here.
26:10She's not here.
26:11Randy was like, I'm going to fly down.
26:13You know, don't tell her
26:14because I don't like this.
26:15You know, she's never, like,
26:16missed my calls
26:17and she should be answering
26:18or she should at least
26:20be calling me back.
26:21Three hours later, he lands,
26:23comes in blazing in the door,
26:25blazing, guns fired,
26:27looking for Liz
26:28and I'm sitting there
26:29and he's like, where's Liz?
26:31I was like, Randy, look,
26:33I don't know.
26:34He's like, what?
26:36You know, where do you think she is?
26:38You know, who was she with last?
26:41What did you guys do?
26:42I'm going to go find Liz
26:44and I want you sitting here
26:45in the chair
26:46and if you so much
26:47as leave this chair
26:48and you smarten her up
26:49and tell her that I'm here
26:50looking for her,
26:51you're going to hear about it.
26:52I'd never seen Randy like this
26:54before in my life
26:55because I'd never even seen him
26:56argue or fight.
26:57Seriously, I really hadn't.
26:59So him and Terry
27:00went out the door
27:01and I didn't know
27:02what was going on.
27:03I just knew I wasn't
27:04leaving the chair
27:05and I guess he found her.
27:07Terry came back to the room
27:08and said, I left them
27:09on their own.
27:10They're sorting it out.
27:11So they got in their rental car
27:12and they drove back home
27:13and he basically told Terry
27:14in so many words or less,
27:15like, Liz is not coming
27:16back to Miami
27:17and there's no more
27:18hanging out.
27:19Party's over.
27:20This is ridiculous.
27:21She just went too crazy,
27:22you know?
27:23I think Randy felt,
27:24you know, again,
27:25life imitating art,
27:26that Hulk was
27:27taking Liz's side.
27:30Well, that was the beginning
27:31of the end for them
27:32but the beginning
27:33of the end for Randy
27:34and Hulk too
27:35because Randy always thought
27:36that Hulk had something
27:37to do with it.
27:38I've been Hulk for 39 years.
27:40Hulk had nothing
27:41to do with that.
27:42He was shooting
27:43the Dadgum movie.
27:44I think when you separate
27:46and, like, she's at home
27:48and he's on the road,
27:49that all of a sudden
27:51it's a newfound freedom
27:53and that's a whole
27:54brand new life
27:55on both parts.
27:57You know, it was just
27:58a normal day.
27:59I was just home
28:00with the kids.
28:01Beautiful day out
28:02and this is probably, like,
28:03five, six weeks after
28:04we wrapped filming
28:05and we left Miami.
28:07You know, hard line phones.
28:08I'm in the kitchen.
28:09I'm giving Nick a bottle
28:10or whatever and it's Liz.
28:12I'm like, hey, Liz.
28:13God, I miss you.
28:14How are you, you know?
28:16And it was, like,
28:17dead silent on the other
28:18end of the phone.
28:19I was like, Liz?
28:21She's like, Linda?
28:24I left Randy.
28:28I was listening to her
28:29and she was, like,
28:30sounded like she was
28:31at a gas station or something.
28:32I could hear cars going by
28:33in the freeway, you know?
28:34I was like, oh, my God.
28:35She goes, I'm done.
28:36I left him.
28:37And I said, oh, my God.
28:38I said, are you home?
28:39Can I come help you?
28:40Can I talk to you?
28:41I was like, I need to talk
28:42some sense to this girl,
28:43you know?
28:44And she wasn't home.
28:45She goes, nope,
28:46I'm halfway to Miami.
28:47I'm going back.
28:48I met some people there
28:49and I've got a place to stay.
28:50She goes, just promise me
28:51don't tell Randy
28:52that I'm on the road.
28:55She had a convertible
28:56little red Cadillac
28:57and I just,
28:58the mental picture in my mind
28:59was her, like,
29:00a country music video
29:01or something
29:02with two suitcases
29:03in the back
29:04and her just driving
29:05her convertible down to Miami
29:06with the wind
29:07blowing through her hair.
29:08Probably feeling free
29:10and relieved
29:11of the constant
29:12submission
29:13that Randy had on her.
29:15And it wasn't that
29:16he was trying to do it
29:17out of being mean
29:18or anything.
29:19It was just
29:20in a protective way
29:21but she had just
29:22had enough
29:23of that suppression.
29:24When Randy and Liz
29:25split up,
29:27you could tell
29:28there was a change
29:29in the mancho man.
29:30You know,
29:31he was a little drawn back.
29:32He really wasn't
29:33as intense as he was
29:34when they were together.
29:36Once she was gone,
29:37he really kind of
29:38just went silent.
29:40He lost all,
29:42he didn't really care
29:44about the business.
29:45You know,
29:46it was like
29:47the lights were on
29:48but nobody's home.
29:49But yet there was
29:50that exterior
29:51that was,
29:52okay, I gotta move on.
29:53I think Randy
29:54was tormented.
29:55You know,
29:56I mean,
29:57he had all the money,
29:58all the stuff
29:59and all that
30:00but he always
30:01and it was never,
30:02I don't know,
30:03he was always so wound up
30:04and I'm thinking,
30:05Mosh,
30:06like,
30:07you've made it, bro.
30:08Like,
30:09what's missing?
30:10Like,
30:11what's it gonna take
30:12to make you happy?
30:13One day,
30:14we were sitting in the car
30:15waiting for Vince
30:16to come down,
30:17take him forever
30:18and he comes out of the car
30:19and shuts the door
30:20and says,
30:21gentlemen,
30:22Randy Savage
30:23is now the proud property
30:24of World Championship Wrestling.
30:26And,
30:28we're like,
30:31what happened?
30:37WCW
30:38was owned by Ted Turner,
30:40competition to the WWF.
30:42Ted Turner had started
30:44to try and lure talent
30:46from the WWF
30:48over to WCW.
30:50Hulk Hogan was the first talent
30:52that made the big jump.
30:53The macho man,
30:54Randy Savage,
30:55he's interested in coming over
30:56because in WWE,
30:58Randy had been put out to pasture
31:00by Vince McMahon.
31:01Vince McMahon basically said,
31:03Randy, you're too old,
31:04your gimmick's over,
31:05your stick is done,
31:06you're gonna be a color commentator
31:08and that hurt Randy.
31:10I didn't want to reinvent a wheel
31:11that I believed already worked.
31:13And by the way,
31:14when Randy Savage came over,
31:18what a light of your life.
31:19Yeah!
31:20$750,000 a year of Slim Jim money
31:24came with him.
31:25And Slim Jim wasn't interested
31:27in changing Randy Savage.
31:30WCW has given the macho man
31:32a renewed career,
31:33but his protective nature
31:34won't allow him to leave
31:35his one true love behind.
31:37Randy called her up
31:38and said,
31:39come on in,
31:40you can be a part of the storyline,
31:41make some money.
31:42He's divorced from Elizabeth
31:43at this point,
31:44but cares about her enough
31:46that he gets her
31:47a $250,000 a year contract
31:49just to kind of stand around
31:50and look pretty.
31:51She wasn't even on camera much.
31:53But he wanted her looked after.
31:55Except this time,
31:56she was the fella
31:57and Randy was the baby face
31:58and was perfect.
31:59She'd changed so much.
32:00She wasn't like the same
32:01little quiet girl I remember.
32:04She was more talkative.
32:05So I said,
32:06well, what's happening?
32:07I go,
32:08were you dating anybody?
32:09She goes,
32:10well, I'm kind of like
32:11seeing Lex.
32:12And I go,
32:13you're like seeing Lex.
32:14And I go,
32:15Lex is married.
32:16And she goes,
32:17I know,
32:18that's the problem.
32:19I go,
32:20this,
32:21that's not good.
32:23Lex Luger was oftentimes considered,
32:25you know,
32:26the second coming of Hulk Hogan.
32:28Lex had a million dollar body
32:30and he had a great look.
32:32Lex Luger
32:34is one of the top names ever
32:36in professional wrestling industry.
32:38He's easy to hate
32:39because it's like,
32:40there's nothing wrong with him.
32:41She was
32:43head over heels
32:45over him.
32:46I could tell that.
32:47Paired together
32:48as part of a wrestling storyline,
32:50Elizabeth and Lex Luger's
32:51professional relationship
32:53evolves into a secret love affair.
32:55They were a very happy couple.
32:57They'd go work out in the gym together.
32:58They would spend a lot of time together.
33:00They were being a little bit sneaky
33:02with adjoining rooms and stuff.
33:04And I guess you can't help
33:05who you're attracted to
33:06and who you fall in love with.
33:07And I always liked Lex
33:08and I always liked Liz.
33:09And hey,
33:10if you guys make each other happy,
33:12go for it.
33:13So when the idea
33:14started bouncing around
33:15about blurring the lines,
33:17if you will,
33:18between scripted and reality
33:20with regard to Elizabeth's
33:22relationship with Randy
33:23and their marriage
33:24and their divorce.
33:25Randy, she's your ex-wife.
33:27At least you owe her this much, man.
33:30I was really shocked at first
33:32that Randy would entertain
33:33some of those ideas.
33:34I'm really lost
33:36and I need you.
33:37And I,
33:38I don't think I can reach you.
33:40He was still very protective
33:42of Elizabeth
33:43but in a much different way.
33:45He watched Lex like a hawk.
33:47It wasn't just that
33:48they were in a relationship.
33:49Lex was married
33:50and had kids.
33:51Everybody knows
33:52that that's gonna end badly
33:53one way or the other.
33:54Where are you living?
33:55Do you have an apartment
33:56or whatever?
33:57She's like, no,
33:58he's got another place.
33:59He's got,
34:00he's keeping me in.
34:01But the weird thing is
34:02that it's in the same complex
34:03of where he and his wife live.
34:04I go, oh.
34:05I said, this is not good.
34:07It was pretty apparent also
34:09that they were both,
34:13they were pilled up.
34:15They were just
34:17spending too much time
34:18doing too many drugs.
34:20I've never witnessed her
34:21doing any kind of drugs or pills
34:23and in fact,
34:24when we'd go out and drink,
34:26she'd have two glasses of wine
34:28and she'd be already like
34:29feeling it.
34:30I'm like, oh,
34:31it's time to go home, you know.
34:32The thing is,
34:33Liz doesn't weigh 270
34:34like me and Lex.
34:35Liz weighs about 85 pounds.
34:39So she's taking
34:40the same amount of pills
34:41that a 300 pounder's taking.
34:43You know,
34:44they had some kind of a fight
34:45and she fell down the stairs
34:47and she ended up
34:48with two black eyes.
34:50In April of 2003,
34:51squad cars respond
34:52to a domestic disturbance
34:53at the home of Lex Luger.
34:55Upon their arrival,
34:56the police notice
34:57Elizabeth has bruised eyes.
34:59At first,
35:00she denies the injuries
35:01are from Luger,
35:02but she eventually admits
35:03to the authorities
35:04that he did hit her.
35:05Luger was charged
35:06with misdemeanor
35:08I thought,
35:09falling down the stairs
35:10gave her two black eyes?
35:12Hmm.
35:14Talk about the idea
35:15of getting Lex Luger
35:16on your podcast
35:17and talk about that process
35:18and what you wanted
35:19to talk to him about.
35:20When Nick,
35:22my producer and co-host,
35:23suggested, you know,
35:24that we bring Lex on,
35:26you know, I was,
35:27I had mixed emotions
35:28because I,
35:30I still,
35:32honestly Lex, I'm sorry,
35:33but I still had
35:34some resentment
35:35even during the time
35:36we were making the call,
35:39but Lex rose to the occasion.
35:41He was,
35:42he was brutally honest.
35:44I'll never forget,
35:49it was actually
35:50early morning hours,
35:52we were having just
35:53an evening watching
35:54movies together
35:55and kicking back
35:56and having,
35:57sipping on some vodka
35:59and popping pills
36:00and literally,
36:03before the 911 call,
36:04I realized she had
36:05stopped breathing.
36:07Okay,
36:08what I want you to do,
36:09I want you to go over
36:10and see if she's breathing.
36:11I think...
36:12Sal,
36:13please send somebody here
36:14so she knows
36:15what they're doing.
36:16I understand that, sir.
36:17I have somebody on the way,
36:19but if she's not breathing,
36:21you need to help her breathe.
36:23You need to find out
36:24whether or not
36:25she's breathing.
36:26Go over to her,
36:28sir.
36:29Oh my God.
36:30Lay down
36:31and check to see
36:32if she's breathing.
36:33Look at her chest.
36:34See if it's rising.
36:35Doesn't look like it is.
36:36I'm scared to death.
36:38Terry called me
36:39and he just said,
36:41you know,
36:42really, really bad news.
36:43Liz is dead.
36:45And, like,
36:46when he said that,
36:47I just felt like
36:48somebody poured
36:49a bucket of ice on me.
36:50Oh,
36:51I was at home in Atlanta,
36:53heard on the
36:54morning news.
36:58I was pissed.
36:59I was pissed
37:00because I saw
37:01Lex
37:04manipulating
37:05and exploiting
37:06a vulnerable person
37:08and using
37:09prescription drugs
37:10to do it.
37:11They told me that
37:12Elizabeth had just passed.
37:13I thought she was
37:14going to make it
37:15and she was going to
37:16go to the hospital
37:17and they were going to regret
37:18that she didn't make it.
37:19And then,
37:20I was arrested
37:21on, I think,
37:2217 felony counts
37:23and all the drugs
37:24they found in my house.
37:25I thought I had
37:26the drugs under control,
37:27but ended up
37:28having,
37:29getting killed
37:30having,
37:31getting in control
37:32of Elizabeth
37:33and I.
37:34The tragedy of that,
37:36to witness that firsthand,
37:38it was,
37:39it was a very dark time,
37:40without a doubt.
37:41I knew he was
37:42telling the truth.
37:43I knew he was being honest
37:44and accepting responsibility.
37:46I look at him
37:47so differently now.
37:51I respect him
37:52because I never thought
37:53I'd hear myself say.
37:55I want to ask you about,
37:56you know,
37:57Miss Elizabeth,
37:58you know,
37:59earlier in your career,
38:01you guys
38:02helped each other out
38:03in your careers.
38:04Yeah, we were actually married
38:06and we got a divorce,
38:07like what happens
38:08in life sometimes.
38:09We had separation,
38:10we had closure,
38:11but I really feel
38:12real bad for her
38:13and her family.
38:15And it was a situation
38:16where we hadn't seen
38:17each other in about,
38:18maybe five, six years,
38:19but, you know,
38:20we had closure
38:21and we'd said hello
38:22and everything was all good,
38:23but I feel bad
38:24for her family.
38:25Elizabeth tragically
38:26passed away
38:27at the age of 42,
38:28but grieving fans
38:29would have no idea
38:30that this epic saga
38:31was approaching
38:32its final chapter.
38:39This is my brother
38:41getting married
38:42for the second time
38:43to the lovely
38:44Lynn Payne Poffel.
38:46In 2010,
38:47seven years
38:48after Elizabeth's death,
38:49Randy Savage
38:50finds love once again.
38:52He, you know,
38:53weathered the storm
38:54through his divorce
38:55and he was finally
38:56kind of on his feet.
38:57He's remarried
38:58and just starting
38:59to kind of really
39:00enjoy his life.
39:03When Randy retired
39:04from wrestling,
39:05he was able to devote
39:06a lot of his time
39:07to the Special Olympics.
39:09That was his passion
39:10and he enjoyed
39:12his final years
39:14as a sedentary person.
39:16I was supposed to go
39:17to San Jose, California.
39:18American Airlines
39:19stopped in Dallas.
39:20I turned on my phone
39:22and there was a message
39:23on there and it said,
39:24this is Largo Medical,
39:25your brother,
39:26and his wife
39:28were in a automobile accident
39:31and she's banged up
39:33and your brother's
39:34in critical condition.
39:35But the way they said it,
39:36I knew.
39:37I got a phone call
39:38early that morning
39:39from Lanny Poffel.
39:40Jimmy?
39:41Yeah, Lanny?
39:42I hadn't had time to call yet
39:43because it's early.
39:44He goes, no, listen,
39:45I'm coming back home.
39:46Why?
39:47And I could tell his voice
39:48was really shaky.
39:49He goes, what?
39:50He goes,
39:51I just got a phone call.
39:52He said, my brother
39:53just got killed.
39:54Now regarding
39:55Randy Macho Man Savage,
39:57you may know him well.
39:58He is a pro wrestler.
40:00We have just confirmed
40:01that Randy Macho Man Savage
40:03has died.
40:04Coming from the
40:05Florida Highway Patrol,
40:06there was a car accident.
40:07I was literally
40:08on my way to the airport
40:09to leave Clearwater
40:11when I got the phone call
40:12from Hulk or Terry.
40:14He crashed into a tree
40:15and died as a result
40:17of a heart attack.
40:18It's hard to believe.
40:20Even now, sitting here
40:21doing this interview,
40:22it's hard to believe it's true
40:23because he was so full of life.
40:25He was so full of energy.
40:27It's hard to imagine
40:28that he's not here, really.
40:32We're going to the site
40:34where my brother lost control.
40:37And you're going to see the tree.
40:38They've still got a few flowers,
40:39although they've taken
40:41some of them down.
40:42It's been seven years, you know.
40:54I judge people by the way,
40:57for example,
40:58Randy treated my kids.
40:59Oh, and that was it for me.
41:01If I start thinking about that
41:02too much, I'll cry.
41:04He went out of his way
41:06to be really, really good to kids.
41:08And that's how I judge people.
41:11He loved Brooke
41:12and he loved kids.
41:13I'm sure he probably
41:14would have said yes
41:16at any time
41:17and loved to have kids with Liz.
41:18I think it's a shame
41:19Liz isn't in the Hall of Fame.
41:21I think that she was called
41:22the first lady of wrestling
41:23for a reason.
41:24She was the first
41:26significant female star
41:28who never wrestled.
41:30Because he had her at his side
41:32made him even more special
41:34because she was so special.
41:36She was the first female
41:38that was depicted
41:40in a powerful role.
41:43She was beautiful, quiet,
41:45but she was class.
41:46Elizabeth was class.
41:47Maybe a boy named Timmy
41:49would come up with her.
41:51His father, and they say,
41:53may I have your autograph, sir?
41:55He said, oh, yeah,
41:57here's the deal.
41:59Timmy, I'm gonna sign
42:01your autograph, but you gotta
42:02do something for me.
42:04What's that?
42:06How you doing in school, Timmy?
42:08How you doing in school?
42:09Are you doing your best?
42:11Timmy, I'm gonna sign
42:12your autograph,
42:13but if you don't do well
42:14in school,
42:15if you don't do your best
42:16every single day,
42:18it's gonna be real, real bad
42:20for you.
42:22Randy and Elizabeth were greater
42:23than the sum of their parts.
42:25They were undoubtedly key
42:26to each other's legacy.
42:28Fans had never before
42:29experienced a more emotional
42:30and relatable storyline
42:32on the complexity of love.
42:34Together, they transcended
42:35television and, well,
42:37wrestling, too.
42:39Even after the divorce,
42:41they still had a tremendous
42:42amount of love and respect
42:43for each other.
42:44They were true, true
42:45celebrities and icons.
42:47There's not one person
42:48on the whole planet Earth
42:49that doesn't know
42:50who they were.
42:51From a wrestling point of view,
42:52she's one of the greatest
42:53performers out there.
42:54While both passed too soon,
42:56they left their legions of fans
42:57with an epic love story
42:59that will last long
43:00after they're gone.
43:02To me, Randy Savage is
43:03on the Mount Rushmore
43:05of wrestling.
43:06Could perform,
43:07could do an interview,
43:08had the right look.
43:09He was a macho man.
43:10He was an innovator.
43:12He was a creator,
43:13and he made the business
43:16better, in my opinion.
43:18I would call Randy Savage
43:19one of the all-time greats,
43:20without a doubt.
43:21And the real human being,
43:23Randy Poffo,
43:24was really a very good man
43:26and a loving man.
43:28There was a lot of art
43:29imitating life.
43:30You know, sometimes
43:31in the world,
43:32what really happens
43:33is not really planned.
43:34After you roll with it,
43:35then all of a sudden
43:36you really turn into
43:37that character,
43:38turn into that dilemma
43:39that takes place.
43:40I think people will always
43:41want to think of her
43:42as Miss Elizabeth Warren,
43:44not Randy.
43:46You don't want to remember
43:47to be with somebody else.
43:48It just doesn't seem right.
43:50I mean, that's what
43:51we were fed.
43:52That's what we believed.
