00:00Okay, Apple finally launched their 16-inch MacBook Pro, officially.
00:08It's been rumored forever, it's been like on so many people's wish list for the entire
00:13year and they finally brought it out and it is, it's something special.
00:18Now the actual screen size, the bigger 16-inch screen, is probably its least interesting
00:22thing to me.
00:23There's so much more stuff going on that is, I think, really cool.
00:26But I gotta say, this 16-inch MacBook Pro is, it feels like it's the first device that
00:33Apple has launched in a really long time where I feel like they actually cared about what
00:39users wanted.
00:40They actually cared about what professional laptop users needed in a device and they tried
00:45to deliver whatever they could.
00:47So let's just get right into it.
00:49The new 16-inch MacBook Pro is ever so slightly bigger and heavier than the previous generation.
00:55So we're already off to a good start.
00:57On the top of the keyboard, there's now a physical escape key and the keyboard is no
01:02longer this janky butterfly switch keyboard, it's now upgraded to a scissor switch keyboard.
01:06It's very similar in mechanism to the iMac keyboard.
01:11So this uses a scissor switch, it's got rubber domes and it's got a lot more travel than
01:15the old school, well, the previous MacBook Pro keyboards.
01:19These had 0.5mm travel, this has 1mm, it's almost double.
01:23It is a significantly better typing experience and anyone who disliked MacBook Pros and
01:29strayed away from MacBook Pros over the past 3 or 4 years because of their keyboard issues,
01:36welcome home.
01:37Apple had 3 or 4 iterations of these butterfly switch keyboards and I'm glad that they're
01:41done with them on the 15-inch MacBook Pro.
01:43The second thing they changed, and this is most personal to me, like this feels like
01:48the right thing to do, thermal performance has been improved significantly.
01:54So now they're running bigger fan blades and more fan blades for improved airflow, it's
01:58got an upgraded heat pipe, upgraded heat sink, the entire thermal solution in this new 16-inch
02:03MacBook Pro is significantly better than what was in the previous generation.
02:07Now, in the past, I purchased the 2016 MacBook Pro, the 2017 MacBook Pro, both 15-inches,
02:13I also bought the 2018 one, the one that overheated like crazy and I ended up returning
02:18that thing.
02:19They've needed a revamp in their thermal solution for quite a while, it was so weird that they
02:23were running these 6-core and 8-core chips from Intel that get really hot in the same
02:28chassis and same thermal design as the stuff they had from 2016, it just didn't make sense.
02:33See, earlier this year in 2019, they undervolted their CPU, that's how they dealt with their
02:38new 8-core chip, which is okay, like it's better than having it throttle like they did
02:43last year, but this new thermal assembly sounds awesome, I'm so glad they're doing
02:47it.
02:48Another thing that they've improved this year is their battery, so they used to have an
02:5183, 84 watt-hour battery, I forget the exact number, it's now been bumped up to 100 watt-hours,
02:58it's like, that's like a 19, 20% increase.
03:02So here's the thing, as a laptop channel, as a purveyor of laptops, I see a lot of laptops
03:08with big batteries, I've seen 96, 97, 98, 99 watt-hour batteries, I've never seen a
03:14100 watt-hour battery that fit internally, like I've seen stuff that hanged off the back
03:18of laptops, this thing fits inside, it's the biggest, it's the legal limit, it's literally
03:23the biggest battery you can put in a laptop and still fly on a plane.
03:28The charger that comes alongside has also been updated from the 87 watt charger to a
03:32new 96 watt charger, not that the extra 9 watts makes a world of a difference, but the
03:37system can actually use that extra wattage now, and dissipate it properly.
03:42The GPUs, they've been improved, it now runs these Radeon Pro 5000M chips from AMD, 7 nanometer
03:49tech, they're more power efficient, faster memory, more memory on the top end, you can
03:53get up to 8 megs of video memory now, I will have to dive into this in more detail in my
03:57review, but they're claiming some pretty impressive improvements with these new chips.
04:02The screen, like the 16 inch screen, is significant, I guess, for some people, I don't think it's
04:07super important, I've always thought that a 15 inch screen was sufficient for me, but
04:11that extra inch is nice, nothing really changes that much with the screen in terms of like
04:16visual acuity or anything like that, it's still a 500 nit screen, it's still a really
04:20nice retina screen, it does now have adjustable refresh rate, so if you're into video production,
04:25you can lower the refresh rate on your screen to match the frame rate of your video project,
04:29which is kinda neat.
04:30So, I'm just gonna close this off with a few other tweaks they've done, they have some
04:34new speakers, kinda cool, but the base storage has now been increased to 512 gigs and you
04:39get up to 8 terabytes of storage, which is just absolutely insane, you get up to 64 gigs
04:45of RAM of DDR4 at a higher clock speed than it was previous generation, the whole thing
04:50is just better, and here's the kicker, to sweeten the deal of all this stuff, they haven't
04:55changed the base price, it's still at the same price as the previous generation, so
05:00there you have it, 15-inch, that's a lie, 16-inch MacBook Pro, what do you think?
05:07Like, okay, it's expensive, this was never gonna be a cheap machine, but now, for that
05:13money, I feel like you're getting something that, that's worth it, that finally is worth
05:18it after several years of just poor offerings from Apple.
05:22Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video, thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it, see
05:25you guys next time, I'll definitely be doing a more thorough review of the 16-inch MacBook
05:30Pro, cause, I'm in.
