Prada and Axiom Space shoot for the moon with new spacesuit

Italian luxury group Prada and Houston-based startup Axiom Space unveil on Oct. 16, 2024 the design of a spacesuit that will be used for NASA's Artemis 3 mission to the moon. Artemis 3, planned as the first astronaut moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972, is currently scheduled for 2026. The spacesuits were made to withstand extreme temperatures at the lunar south pole and endure the coldest temperatures in the permanently shadowed regions for at least two hours, the two companies said in a joint statement.

00:30It really requires extreme engineering, fantastic manufacturing capability and innovation.
00:45And that's why I'm so proud to be associated with Prada.
00:50You know, innovation doesn't come when you have a team where everyone is the same.
00:56If everyone has the same education, the same background, the same experience, it's hard
01:00to be innovative.
01:01Innovation really comes when you put diverse teams together with diverse backgrounds and
01:06different educations and different skills.
01:08And that's what I think the Prada team has brought to us.
01:11And together we've built something extraordinary that we couldn't have otherwise built individually.
01:26In terms of design, I think, first of all, like this kind of project, a functional design
01:46is always the rule number one.
01:48So whatever was a design choice, it was not just a list of choices, where just first is
01:54it functional?
01:55Is the best functional solution?
01:56And then, you know, if you have on the same table two both same valid options, I think
02:03then we did just maybe a stylistic decision.
02:06And I think it roots back a bit also in the region of design and fashion in general, where
02:11if you look back in the history of design, all the choices were mainly driven by functional
02:18reasons, not just aesthetic reasons.
02:20So I think somehow it was also a nice exercise for our design team to really start from the
02:25functional point of view and then really understanding how to make it also look good.
02:51And creating this flight design has truly revolutionized spacesuit development.
02:56Two very different leaders in their industry have come together to deliver the next generation
03:02spacesuit for the return to the moon, for the first time ever to the South Pole.
03:21Ciao.
03:26See you later.
