00:00Here it is.
00:01All right, here they are, the new iPhone 13s.
00:04Not physically in my hand just yet,
00:06but Apple have just announced the new mini,
00:0813, 13 Pro, and the Pro Max.
00:10Mostly, I think, what we expected,
00:13and I think it does feel a bit like a 12S
00:16in terms of nothing sort of revolutionary different,
00:18but there is still quite a lot to unpack.
00:20And while, of course, I will be doing full reviews
00:22and comparisons and all that good stuff,
00:24so make sure you have subscribed,
00:25this is my kind of first reaction.
00:28Here at Apple, Ted Lasso
00:30is at the center of everything we do.
00:33So Apple have just taken the wraps off
00:35their new base iPad and the upgraded iPad mini,
00:38as well as the Apple Watch Series 7,
00:41although surprisingly no new AirPods,
00:43and of course also no new MacBooks,
00:44although that was expected for an October event anyway.
00:47So while I think the iPad mini is actually pretty exciting,
00:50I really can't wait to get my hands on that,
00:51it is, of course, the iPhone 13s
00:53that we've all been looking forward to.
00:55So the headline upgrades across the board
00:57for the 13 series include brighter screens,
01:00although only the Pro series
01:01have the new ProMotion 120 hertz,
01:04a slightly smaller notch, it's about 20% smaller,
01:07a whole new range of colors,
01:09although sadly no lavender or Pacific blue, the A15 chip.
01:13The marketing is quite funny,
01:14the iPhone 13 and mini have chips
01:17that are faster than the competition,
01:19but the Pro and Pro Max have the fastest chip
01:21ever in a smartphone,
01:23and that's because the Pro models have an extra GPU core,
01:27so it's a five core GPU rather than four core
01:29in the 13 and 13 mini, so a little bit faster.
01:33The layout of the cameras on the 13 and 13 mini,
01:36which just have the two lenses on our diagonal
01:39rather than on top of each other,
01:40which is not the most significant change,
01:42but a slight visual difference
01:44so you can identify the new models.
01:45We also get improved cameras across the board
01:48with bigger pixel sizes, so it lets more light in,
01:51and therefore hopefully we should see
01:53a much better low light performance.
01:55Also, all iPhone 13s get the sensor shift OIS,
01:58which previously was exclusive to the 12 Pro Max,
02:01but even the mini has that now.
02:04We're also getting this very fancy new cinematic mode,
02:07which does seem quite interesting
02:08as it automatically shifts focus between subjects,
02:11or you can do it manually,
02:13and also I think exclusive to the Pro series,
02:15you can actually adjust the focus and also the bokeh
02:18after you've taken the video,
02:20which is pretty crazy on a smartphone.
02:23The Pro series can also now shoot 4K30 ProRes,
02:27but going back to that cinematic mode,
02:28and actually in the sort of TNCs about it,
02:31it is limited to 1080p30, which isn't 4K,
02:37so obviously that is a bit of a compromise,
02:39but it will be really interesting to see
02:41just how smart that autofocusing is
02:44and if it's really worth using,
02:45because just like all the other Pro video modes
02:48on pretty much every other phone we've seen,
02:50cool idea, not something I've ever actually ended up using,
02:54but hopefully this will be different.
02:55Same price, across the board actually no price increases,
02:58which is surprising given the fact
03:00that we have the chip shortage,
03:01and there were a lot of rumors
03:02that Apple had to pay more for the silicon,
03:04but apparently it's not being passed on to us,
03:06so same prices as the iPhone 12 series,
03:08which is great to see,
03:09and also a new one terabyte storage option.
03:13So throughout the Apple event, I was making some notes,
03:15and a few things stood out for me.
03:18Firstly, there isn't really any exclusive feature now
03:22on the Pro Max, which we used to have on the 12 series.
03:25For example, we had that sensor shift OIS on the 12 Pro Max,
03:28which the 12 Pro didn't have,
03:30so there was a actual reason you might want to go
03:33for the biggest, most expensive version,
03:35other than just the bigger screen,
03:36but now it seems that the Pro and the Pro Max
03:39share all the same specs, except for battery life,
03:43which does still appear to be a good deal longer
03:45than even the 13 Pro.
03:47So for 100 pounds or $100 more than the Pro,
03:50the Pro Max gets you the bigger 6.7-inch screen versus 6.1,
03:54and also that much longer battery,
03:56so maybe a reason to pay that little bit extra.
03:59But you know what?
04:00Fancy new chips and upgraded cameras to one side,
04:03the biggest upgrade with the 13 series, I think,
04:05is the battery life,
04:07and if any of you guys have used a iPhone 12 mini,
04:10the battery life is a bit rubbish,
04:12so even adding an extra hour and a half to that
04:14will make a bit of a difference.
04:15So Apple spent a lot of time talking about the cameras,
04:18I think that is one of the most exciting upgrades
04:20that we all look forward to,
04:21and across the board, we should be looking at,
04:23as I say, better low-light performance.
04:25But there are a couple of other upgrades,
04:27including the fact that the ultra-wide lens
04:29can now double as a macro,
04:30so you can get super close to subjects.
04:33Again, I'm not quite sure how often
04:34I would use that macro mode,
04:35but having the extra reflectability is nice,
04:37and also just with the quality
04:39of the iPhone cameras generally,
04:41this could be the best macro camera we've seen
04:44outside of the actual microscope lens
04:46that we had on the Oppo Find X3 Pro.
04:49One thing that hasn't changed, though,
04:50is that with the telephoto lens,
04:52we're still getting a three times optical zoom.
04:55So from the ultra-wide up to the telephoto,
04:57there is six times zoom, essentially.
05:00I kinda had hoped, as someone who uses the S21 Ultra
05:04as their sort of everyday phone,
05:06that maybe we'd have seen a fourth lens
05:07giving us perhaps a five or 10 times zoom,
05:10maybe they've used some sort of periscope lens.
05:12I know that was a bit of wishful thinking,
05:13but in terms of the iPhone's photography abilities,
05:17I think the only area it falls down a little bit
05:19is with the zoom.
05:21One cool feature I do like the idea of, though,
05:23are these new photography styles.
05:25There are four of them,
05:26and they give you a little bit of control
05:28over how the photos come out
05:30without just having to take a normal photo
05:32and then put a filter on it.
05:33So you can switch between sort of standard
05:35and vibrant modes and kind of get a different style.
05:37And hopefully, we do see these expanded
05:39or maybe even more customization added later on.
05:44So I think for me, the three big upgrades
05:46are the improved cameras.
05:48I was gonna say the A15 chip,
05:49because no doubt it is more powerful,
05:51but it's harder and harder to really visualize
05:54and see those speed boosts
05:56outside of perhaps the fact that the ISP
05:58unlocks new abilities for the camera.
06:00So I'm gonna stick with the camera upgrades,
06:02the longer battery life,
06:03and also that 120 hertz ProMotion on the Pro and the Pro Max.
06:08I know it's a really stupid thing to say,
06:09but it's one of the reasons
06:11that I haven't really switched over to iPhone yet.
06:13But once you have gone to 90 or 120 hertz,
06:17going back to 60,
06:18along with the pretty long animations
06:20that you get on iPhone,
06:21it does feel a bit slow in my opinion.
06:23So I can't wait to get my hands
06:24on the 120 hertz ProMotion.
06:26And the fact that it goes from 10 to 120,
06:29and it will dynamically adjust
06:30based on what's on screen and how you're using it,
06:32means like the LTPO panels
06:34that we get on something like the S21 Ultra,
06:35the fact that it can go down to 13, even 10 hertz,
06:38depending on what you're doing,
06:39may actually improve battery life
06:41over the standard 60 hertz that we had before.
06:44The question is though,
06:45when I come to do a big battery test,
06:47am I going to have them all at 60 hertz
06:49just because the 13 and the 13 mini are still at 60?
06:53Or finally, can I set them all
06:55to their default high refresh modes
06:58like I think they should be
06:59because that's how people actually use them,
07:01but then I get told off for doing.
07:03One area that does feel a little bit dated now,
07:05I say a little bit, a lot,
07:07is the fact that we still have the lightning port.
07:09There's no switch to USB-C,
07:10which is not something we expected.
07:12There was of course rumors
07:13about Apple removing the port completely,
07:16which maybe they will do next year,
07:17assuming the MagSafe ecosystem
07:19takes off a bit more than it has so far.
07:22But when you consider the only iPad remaining
07:25that still uses a lightning port is the cheapest base model.
07:28Even the iPad mini has USB-C,
07:30which they made into a big feature
07:32and a bit of a selling point.
07:33The fact that the iPhones, all of them,
07:35the brand new iPhones still use lightning
07:38is a bit frustrating.
07:39It's not the end of the world for a lot of people
07:41who wirelessly charge.
07:42They upload everything through AirDrop anyway.
07:44So it's less of a big deal than it used to be,
07:46but come on, just give me USB-C.
07:49So even if there is no giant revolutionary upgrade
07:52with the 13 series,
07:54if you do fancy yourself buying one of these
07:55or you're due an upgrade, which one should you go for?
07:58Well, you probably already have an idea
08:00based on what you're currently using
08:01and also what size of phone you want
08:03because that is a differentiator as well.
08:05But if I was gonna go out and buy one,
08:07I will personally, I'd probably go for the 13 Pro Max
08:10because I want the longest battery possible
08:12because when I'm out on a long day shoot,
08:15then having that battery really does come in handy.
08:17But when my friends ask me what iPhone should they buy,
08:20I would say go for the 13 Pro.
08:23It's about 150 pounds more than the 13,
08:26but we get the telephoto lens,
08:28we get the ProMotion 120 Hertz,
08:30you get the LiDAR sensor.
08:32It's less of a big deal,
08:33but you're also getting that slightly faster five core GPU.
08:36You're also getting three hours longer battery life
08:38according to Apple's video playback claims.
08:41And also the screen's a little bit brighter.
08:43They all have the same 1200 nit peak HDR max brightness,
08:47but actually in everyday use,
08:49the 13 Pro and Pro Max can go up to 1000 nits
08:52versus 800 on the 13 and the mini.
08:55The standard 13s also miss out on night mode portrait shots.
08:58It doesn't support Apple's ProRAW
09:00or even the new upcoming ProRes camera options.
09:04So nothing really crazy different this year,
09:06but I am looking forward to testing them properly
09:08and also seeing what those new cameras can do.
09:10So make sure you have hit that subscribe button
09:12so you don't miss out on my hands-ons,
09:14unboxings, reviews, comparisons,
09:16and also of course the new Series 7 Apple Watch
09:18and the new iPads,
09:19which means I'm gonna have to make
09:21a whole new iPad buying guide again.
09:23But so stay tuned for that.
09:25So my final thought really is your move, Google.
09:28Let's see what the Pixel 6 can do.
09:30At the heart of it all, the morning show,
09:33which starts this Friday.
