00:00Hey guys, I'm TomatekChap, and while as expected, there's no sign of the Galaxy Note 21,
00:05Samsung's been busy with new Galaxy Buds, a couple of watches, flips and folds. And it's these two
00:12I want to show you because we've had some pretty big upgrades across the board,
00:15but at the same time, nothing that really makes them feel that different.
00:20But actually, before we even get to the fancy
00:22underscreen cameras and the specs, the big news, I think, is that they've dropped the prices. In the UK, the Flip 3 starts at
00:30£150, which is down from £1,300 last year for the first flip. And the Fold 3 starts at
00:37£1,600, again down from £1,800 on the Fold 2.
00:41Don't get me wrong, that is still a lot of money,
00:43and I think the Fold still has a good way to go before it becomes a mainstream device,
00:48which is why, perhaps, I think the Flip will actually be the one to go for.
00:52But let's talk about this guy first. And the headlines include the new Snapdragon 888 chip,
00:58which is regardless of region, actually, there's no Exynos in sight.
01:01It's also a tiny bit lighter and a decent amount thinner, plus the gap when folded is now a little bit smaller.
01:08The front cover screen now supports 120Hz, just like the main tablet screen, up from 60Hz before.
01:14They're both now a tad brighter as well, and they both use Gorilla Glass Victus, whereas previously that was only on the cover screen.
01:21Samsung also tells me the tablet screen is now 80% stronger than before, plus the aluminium frame is 10% stronger.
01:28But crucially, that tougher screen with a new film on top means that we finally have S Pen support.
01:34But wait, there's more! We also have IPX8 water resistance,
01:38which is great to see, and actually the first on a foldable.
01:41The battery lasts about 5-10% longer, thanks to more efficient hardware, and that's despite actually having a slightly smaller
01:484,400mAh battery.
01:50We do also get 25W wired charging, 10W wireless, and I think it's 4.5W reverse wireless charging,
01:58but sadly no bundled charger in the box, just like the S21.
02:02But perhaps the most obvious change is this, a very fancy new underscreen selfie camera on the main tablet screen.
02:09It is a relatively low quality 4MP camera, and Samsung doesn't really suggest using this as a proper photography camera.
02:17That's what the other four lenses are on the front and back are for, but for video conferencing, face unlocking, things like that,
02:23this does the job, and it disappears.
02:26Well, not completely. You can still just about notice it, especially up close with this faint black outline and crosshatch texture.
02:34But it's still very impressive, and next to the Fold 2, which has this big black hole staring at you at all times,
02:40it's a nice aesthetic upgrade, but that's maybe about it.
02:44So we're looking at an underscreen camera, a new chip, a more durable design, the S Pen support,
02:50120Hz on the cover screen and a slightly brighter screen altogether, and it's £300 cheaper than before.
02:56That's a pretty big upgrade.
02:58Slightly less impressive, though, is the camera situation, because the Fold 3 essentially uses the same main camera as the S21+,
03:06and the same ultrawide and telephoto as the standard S21, which is fine.
03:11But considering the S21 Ultra, which launched back in January and is about £500 cheaper,
03:17actually has better cameras than the Fold 3, for the price, you kind of expect the best of everything with this.
03:24Although, we may see some improvements thanks to the new ISP on the Snapdragon chip,
03:29and also for the first time, we get Gorilla Glass with DX, which is essentially just ultra-clear lens glass.
03:35So it will be interesting to see if this really makes much of a difference, and I'll be sure to test this out properly in my full review.
03:41So, make sure you have tapped that little red subscribe button.
03:45I must admit, I was also hoping the crease in the middle of the screen may have been made a bit more subtle,
03:50but it looks near enough the same as before.
03:53I am excited to spend more time with the S Pen on this, though, because the Fold 3 offers the most responsive S Pen experience on any Samsung device,
04:02with a 2.8ms response time, which is down from 9ms on the S21 Ultra and the Note 20 Ultra.
04:09And that actually applies to both the S Pen Fold Edition and the S Pen Pro.
04:13They both have 4096 levels of sensitivity, and also uniquely, the tips can retract slightly under pressure, which helps reduce the impact on the screen.
04:22But the S Pen Fold is a fair bit smaller than the Pen Pro, and also misses out on USB-C charging and Bluetooth support,
04:29so you can't use those fancy air actions. Although, I don't think you'll lose too much sleep about that.
04:34Samsung is selling a Note pack with the Fold 3, though, which comes with this protective case, and also this little sleeve for the S Pen,
04:41although I can't say it's the most elegant thing I've ever seen.
04:45So, now the Fold 3 and also the S21 Ultra support the S Pen, do we even need a new Galaxy Note? What do you think?
04:53I would say yes, because really, for me, the biggest selling point is the convenience of actually having it stored safely in the phone.
05:01For me, at least, that's one of the big reasons that separates the S Pen from other styluses, styli, which I don't really want to use that much.
05:09So who's this for? Well, I still think the Fold is a bit of a showy-off device. It's sort of something to make you stand out.
05:16That's not a bad thing. I mean, the engineering is very impressive. It's significantly more durable than before.
05:22We get flagship specs, and the big Quad HD plus 120Hz tablet screen with no hole punch cutout is just stunning.
05:30However, you can't escape the fact the cover screen still feels a bit small. There's a noticeable crease in the middle of the screen.
05:36The aspect ratio means we have chunky letterboxing when you're watching videos and movies, and some apps and games can get cut off or squashed.
05:44Plus, if you mainly use this for gaming, then the lack of shoulder triggers or, say, a high-end vapor chamber cooler holds it back a little bit.
05:52But I'll tell you what, even if it's a lot of money and no one really needs a Galaxy Z Fold 3,
05:58I would be lying if I said I didn't want one.
06:00But what about this instead? Because where the Fold 3 feels very much like a folding tablet, the Flip 3 is a folding phone.
06:09And while sadly we don't have the same nifty underscreen selfie camera of the Fold, no S Pen support,
06:15the cameras have also been a little bit forgone about and there's still no telephoto lens.
06:19And also, while we do get the same Snapdragon 888, the Flip tops out with 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage versus 12 and 512GB on the Fold.
06:29Plus, we get 15W rather than 25W wired charging.
06:33Despite all that, I think the Flip 3, which is technically the second Flip but they've called it the 3 to match the Fold, is going to be a lot more popular.
06:41Because for £949, this is now cheaper than an S21 Plus or iPhone 12 Pro.
06:48I still think there's nostalgia for a good flippy phone and realistically this is the only good option and we do get some nice upgrades.
06:55The big changes include these new colours and compared to the relatively bland black, silver and sage folds,
07:02the Flip comes in 7 colours with the lavender and I think also maybe the cream flavours really standing out for me.
07:09Along with the faster chip, we also now have a 120Hz refresh rate which I think makes a massive difference to actually using it and how fast everything feels.
07:17We get the toughest Gorilla Glass Victus and also that DX clear glass on the camera lenses,
07:22a stronger aluminium frame and IPX8 water resistance like the Fold and it's also a touch thinner, although it does weigh about the same as before.
07:30But what was a tiny 1.1 inch cover screen is now 1.9 inches which makes this a whole lot more usable.
07:38So like the Fold, you can either use the cover screen to frame your photos, videos and indeed selfies
07:44as you may as well take advantage of the better quality main cameras including the ultrawide.
07:49Or you can just use it as a viewfinder for your subject when taking regular photos,
07:53although they may still have to squint a little bit to see themselves from a distance.
07:57Normally though it acts as a kind of always on display with the time and an image popping up
08:02which actually can sync with the watch face on your new Galaxy Watch 4 if you want to go all in with Samsung's ecosystem.
08:09But there is just something really satisfying about using the Flip.
08:12And the tall 22 by 9 aspect ratio is great for watching movies in landscape mode or scrolling through feeds in portrait.
08:20My only concern is the 3300 mAh cell which isn't the biggest, it's also a dual battery design like we get on the Fold,
08:28but that's something I'm going to have to test in the real world to see how long it actually lasts.
08:32Also at a hair under 16mm thick it is quite chunky in your pocket and in my super scientific pocket test,
08:40they felt similarly bulky, but if you do have shallower pockets the Flip is a much better choice.
08:48So I can't wait to get both of these as well as the new watch and buds back home with me for a proper review.
08:53I can't say I came away as excited as last year when we saw the first Flip and also the much improved Fold 2,
09:01but across the board we are seeing some pretty nice upgrades, again it's a refinement rather than a revolution,
09:06and generally they say in the world of tech that it's the third generation of product that's actually good,
09:12the one that you should buy, and I think with the hardware and software upgrades,
09:16and crucially that price drop across the board, they're definitely becoming easier to recommend.
09:20Although if you're a Fold 2 owner I don't think really it's a big enough upgrade to
09:24make you want to chuck this in the bin and run out and buy a new one.
09:28But what do you make of them? And if you had to choose one of these to be your main phone,
09:32which would you pick? The Fold or the Flip? Let me know in the comments below.
09:36Thank you so much for watching guys and if you enjoyed the video a cheeky little like
09:40and subscribe would be very much appreciated, and I will see you next time right here on the Tech Chat.
10:02you
