00:00:37Good afternoon from Phillip Island Australia where the drama of the MotoGP World Championship
00:01:05Continues with race day at Round 17.
00:01:09Just coming up to 2pm local time here in Australia.
00:01:12Reminder, just three events left after today,
00:01:15and Jorge Martínez edged his lead out to 16 points
00:01:18after a commanding sprint race victory yesterday.
00:01:21He's got the momentum, but this title race is far from over.
00:01:24Marc Marquez there, he'll be gunning for redemption
00:01:27after he started second,
00:01:28and adds a moment of fierce comeback to get to the podium.
00:01:30What about Peko Banyaire as well?
00:01:32Despite finishing fourth yesterday,
00:01:34he's been a master of bouncing back on Sundays,
00:01:37and with 25 points on offer today,
00:01:40a good warm-up under his belt.
00:01:43The reigning champ knows he can't afford another misstep
00:01:46if he wants to keep his crown in sight.
00:01:47The wind, the rain are distant memories now,
00:01:50but the lack of dry time make this one unpredictable.
00:01:53Can Peko Banyaire close the gap?
00:01:55Will Marquez disrupt the order?
00:01:57Will Bastinini come on stronger?
00:01:58Will Martínez march even closer to his first MotoGP title?
00:02:03Neil Hodgson, lots of questions to be answered in the next 27 laps.
00:02:08You're not wrong, and I'll tell you what,
00:02:09the conditions are as good as we've had all weekend.
00:02:12Yes, there's a bit of a breeze,
00:02:13but it's nowhere near as gusty as it's been at points over the weekend.
00:02:17Track temperature's perfect.
00:02:20I mean, look at that.
00:02:21The only concern, I would say, is the air temperature's quite cool still.
00:02:2415, if the clouds were to come over,
00:02:26we've seen it, haven't we, here in the past,
00:02:28about cold tire getting onto the front of these tires.
00:02:31And when they're all trying to manage things a little bit,
00:02:34it's just something to keep in the back of our minds.
00:02:36So, right, 2014, I think Carl Crutcher's still trying to forget that.
00:02:41And that was funny, not funny the fact that he crashed,
00:02:43but the temperature changed so quickly.
00:02:46Anything can happen here in Filipano,
00:02:48but I have to say, as I've walked back in towards the commentary box,
00:02:51it feels more stable.
00:02:52I don't think we're going to get anything like that.
00:02:54Let's hope so. There was Jack Miller.
00:02:55I'll tell you what, his pace isn't that bad.
00:02:57He was a bit faster in the warm-up.
00:02:58We've had 90,000 fans over the weekend,
00:03:0136,000 on race day.
00:03:02It's about right for Filipano.
00:03:04You can't get too many more in this circuit.
00:03:06It's tight, it's compact,
00:03:08but, Neil, it always provides great racing.
00:03:11Please say we're going to get one today.
00:03:13Well, we don't need Martin to get the whole shot
00:03:16and start to stretch it out,
00:03:17because that'll stretch the field.
00:03:19So, yeah, let's hope Jorge Martin gets a mediocre start.
00:03:24At least he's going to work for it.
00:03:27Well, it's also Marquez.
00:03:29He's got the pace, hasn't he?
00:03:30Peco Bagnaia, has he been able to turn it around?
00:03:33I'm going to say yes.
00:03:34Oh, and Enea Bastinini could well get in the mix too.
00:03:36It's fruity, it's tasty,
00:03:38and it's all on the line as the riders have 27 laps
00:03:42around one of the most stunning
00:03:44and treacherous circuits in the world.
00:03:48Time to buckle up.
00:03:49We've got all the ingredients for a classic here
00:03:52as we get ready to go racing.
00:03:53Marc Marquez, a little look down at his bike
00:03:56from second on the grid.
00:03:57It's Martin on pole.
00:03:58Will he extend the lead?
00:03:59Or will he be closed in today?
00:04:01Lights out, and we are on the way for a start for Marc Marquez.
00:04:05Just like yesterday, hasn't got the start that he needed.
00:04:08He's a sitting duck, rolling backwards at the start there.
00:04:11And around the outside comes Frankie Morbidelli.
00:04:15It's Marik Mignogna who's dropped back also.
00:04:18Who's that running deep? Is that Marco Mendes?
00:04:20It's one of the Marquez.
00:04:21I don't know if it's Alex Marquez who's gotten off the track
00:04:23or if it was Marc Marquez.
00:04:24We saw during some practice starts,
00:04:26Marc Marquez lighting it up.
00:04:27It's happened again from the front row of the grid.
00:04:29But he's recovering already.
00:04:31He's on the inside of an airbag.
00:04:32He's aggressively into Stoner Corner.
00:04:35So at the front, Jorge Martinez, Bezeki for company.
00:04:38Bagnani has got the start he would have wanted.
00:04:40And he's attacking Bezeki already.
00:04:41He's going to go through up into second place.
00:04:43Can he put a move in on Martin?
00:04:45Bezeki fights back.
00:04:47You wouldn't think they were best pals, would you?
00:04:49It's tight through there as well.
00:04:50Bagnani's trying to cut back,
00:04:51but there's no room for him through there.
00:04:53It's all one line as it is here through the hayshed.
00:04:56I still can't believe Marc Marquez
00:04:57spun it up on the line
00:04:58and he's still somehow in sixth place.
00:05:00I don't know how that happened at all.
00:05:01Brad Binder got up to fifth from 11th on the grid,
00:05:03but Martin's checking out.
00:05:05It's so important.
00:05:06Bagnani makes a move very quickly in this race.
00:05:08Michelin have said the tyres will last,
00:05:10but you need to manage them.
00:05:11But Bagnani almost needs to just take the risk
00:05:14and get closer to Martin
00:05:15because there's every chance already
00:05:17that Martin could check out
00:05:18as they go through Turn 11 for the first time.
00:05:21We ride on board with the world champion.
00:05:23Yes, and it's all going to be about the exit now.
00:05:25Sit back, sit back, wait, don't go too early
00:05:27because you've got to get a run out of the corner.
00:05:29He's got that perfect.
00:05:30Oh, no, he went too early.
00:05:31Look, now we can see if you go too early,
00:05:33you've took off the throttle a little bit.
00:05:35You don't get the slipstream, no chance to pass.
00:05:37Here we go down towards Turn 1.
00:05:39Can he go late on the brakes?
00:05:40We know how he is.
00:05:41Alex Marquez has had a long-lap penalty come up.
00:05:44Marco Bicecchi's got a long-lap penalty come up.
00:05:46Marquez for the incident with Schwan here at last time out
00:05:49back in Japan.
00:05:51Marco Bicecchi for the incident with Maverick Vinales.
00:05:55So he will clear out of the way for Bagnaia,
00:05:58but all the while,
00:05:59Jorge Martins got half a second in front of Fez.
00:06:01He's got three-quarters of a second in front of Pekka.
00:06:04Is he going to do it on this first lap?
00:06:05Is he going to do it?
00:06:06No, he's not.
00:06:08And meanwhile, Morbidelli attacks Pekka Bagnaia.
00:06:11You can tell there are no Ducati team owners here to help out.
00:06:15You think they might want to help out their mate a little bit,
00:06:17but none of that.
00:06:18They want their own glories.
00:06:19Brad Binder takes advantage of Morbidelli's moves.
00:06:22He's up to full.
00:06:23Yeah, but everyone can see Martin checking out.
00:06:25So you have him to attack.
00:06:26If Bagnaia doesn't quite have the pace,
00:06:29you can't wait.
00:06:30You've got to attack straight away
00:06:31because this man, he just clicks into qualifying mode.
00:06:35He forgets about the race.
00:06:36What he does, he works on himself, his lines.
00:06:38Watch Mark Marquez in the middle of the shot.
00:06:41Spins it up, has to shut the goal,
00:06:43and then you are literally a sitting duck.
00:06:45Your worst nightmare.
00:06:46That's the third time that's happened this weekend for him.
00:06:49I don't know why it happens to him.
00:06:51Yeah, something came up the bottom of the time.
00:06:52I know there was smoke and all that,
00:06:54but there was something else, I don't know.
00:06:56That was just...
00:06:57He had to roll so far out of it.
00:06:59Couldn't even keep it rolling.
00:07:00How has he ended up sixth at the end of the first lap?
00:07:04Incredible.
00:07:06Well, there Martin leads by three tenths for Mark Iwazeki.
00:07:09He has recovered now.
00:07:10But Bagnaia is third and fourth in Brad Binder.
00:07:13Had a really good fist of it last year, didn't he?
00:07:16When he was battling for the second place for much of the race
00:07:19and then was in the scrap when Joan Zarco took to the front.
00:07:22So Binder is good around here.
00:07:25And with the lack of dry track time,
00:07:26maybe just an inkling, a chance for him to get stuck in.
00:07:32Frankie Morinelli is in fifth, then Mark is sixth.
00:07:35Daniele Bastinini didn't get the start of yesterday.
00:07:37He's in seventh.
00:07:38Vinales, eighth.
00:07:39Di Gianantonio, ninth.
00:07:41Quartararo in tenth.
00:07:42I was looking for Miller.
00:07:43I thought he might have made a start,
00:07:44but unfortunately, he's only made one position.
00:07:47He's into 14th.
00:07:49Yeah, it's like a bit of a breakaway group,
00:07:50the top eight, isn't it?
00:07:52Fabio Di Gianantonio in ninth.
00:07:53He's trying to breach that gap, but it's going to be difficult.
00:07:56And then the rest from tenth down,
00:07:58they're sort of out of it, aren't they?
00:07:59You've got Quartararo, Zarco,
00:08:03Ralph Fernandes, Rins,
00:08:04and unfortunately, Miller's stuck behind all them.
00:08:08Down into MG Corner.
00:08:10It has already been a key part of the junior classes
00:08:13of Moto2 and Moto3.
00:08:16Will it be so today?
00:08:18Can Marco Rizeki do anything?
00:08:20Can he get close enough to Jorge Martins to make a move?
00:08:23He's going to have to take his long lap penalty soon.
00:08:26I think he's about to have his last chance to do so.
00:08:28He's given the board on the first lap.
00:08:32Maybe he's got one more go after this.
00:08:34Brad Binder is the fastest rider on circuit currently
00:08:37in fourth place.
00:08:38Good to see, isn't it?
00:08:39Yeah, it really is.
00:08:41Sort of funny, though, you think of racers around here,
00:08:43it's all Binder made a bit of a mistake there.
00:08:45Yeah, his foot came off, he went wide at turn one.
00:08:47And it's so easy to do that.
00:08:48Marc Martins is going to try and squeeze through,
00:08:50but Binder won't be able to see behind us here.
00:08:52Thankfully, Marc backed out of that,
00:08:54otherwise I think there would have been contact
00:08:55and Binder would have probably gone down.
00:08:58Has Bez come in now and take his long lap penalty?
00:09:01Yeah, the angle says that he's going to.
00:09:03It's tricky, though.
00:09:04It's dirty in this part of the track.
00:09:06We've had so much rain.
00:09:07There's not a lot of grip on there,
00:09:09but he's done that really well.
00:09:10He had it a few times in warm-up this morning, didn't he?
00:09:13Gave it a good look.
00:09:14And so Rizeki comes through,
00:09:16and he's now just behind Bastinini in seventh.
00:09:20That moves, of course, Morminelli up to third,
00:09:22Marquez up to fourth, Binder up to fifth,
00:09:24but crucially, Petko Van Jaer
00:09:27into the position to chase down Martins.
00:09:30We'll keep a close eye on the gap.
00:09:32He stands at three-quarters of a second.
00:09:34Yeah, that's going to be the interesting point,
00:09:36is in this next lap,
00:09:37what can Van Jaer do with that clear track in front of him?
00:09:40He can see his main rival.
00:09:42How bad do you want it?
00:09:44You have to seize these moments.
00:09:46You have to take opportunities.
00:09:47And there are points you've got to ride a little bit over your limit.
00:09:50So there's one thing I don't think he's going to set up for second place,
00:09:54because then that gap's going to get up to over 20 points,
00:09:57and we're starting to get to the point there
00:09:59where literally the elastic band has snapped.
00:10:03Yeah, he did say before the weekend, didn't he,
00:10:06Matt Marquez, Petko Van Jaer,
00:10:08that he thought that perhaps second could be the best he hoped for,
00:10:12knowing how strong that Jorge Martín is here.
00:10:16But we just want to see the gloves come off, don't we?
00:10:19We haven't seen them in hand-to-hand combat yet,
00:10:23Martín and Van Jaer.
00:10:25It's got to come before the end of the season.
00:10:27It's got to come when the desperation state starts kicking.
00:10:30And as you say, when the points gap is about...
00:10:33Well, it'd be 21 if things stayed the same.
00:10:35With three rounds still to go, you get into the stage
00:10:38where Jorge Martín can start thinking about finishing second in races,
00:10:41as Marco Bizecchi has gone down at the Miller hairpin.
00:10:45That sums up a really, really miserable weekend for him.
00:10:49But he will look back at this weekend in years to come,
00:10:53and it'll be the weekend that he actually got away with it,
00:10:56crashing like he did in Turn 1,
00:10:58and somehow not managing to end up injured.
00:11:00Well, he's a lucky lad.
00:11:04Yeah, easy to do, though.
00:11:06Off-camber, first-gear hairpin.
00:11:08It's nasty. You don't even feel like you're going fast,
00:11:11and all of a sudden, you're down.
00:11:12And it was at that critical point where we're still braking,
00:11:14still trail braking, overloaded from...
00:11:17How many times we've seen it as well over the years.
00:11:19Of course, the right-hand side of the tyre doesn't get used that much
00:11:22if there is that chill breeze coming across.
00:11:24The air temperature, 15 degrees Celsius.
00:11:26You know, it's not warm out there if the sun is behind the clouds,
00:11:30as Marc Marquez now looks...
00:11:32It goes tight, doesn't it?
00:11:33...in alongside Frankie Borminelli,
00:11:36who judges it well to bring it down at Turn 1.
00:11:38But now Marquez is back up into the podium positions.
00:11:41He's had to have the same race as he had yesterday.
00:11:43Yeah, he's working hard.
00:11:45Just set the fastest lap of the race at 28.0.
00:11:48He's 1.5 seconds behind the leader,
00:11:51but now he's got a bit of clear space.
00:11:53You looked at his pace in the sprint race,
00:11:55and he was very, very similar to Jorge Martín,
00:11:57so let's see if he can drop the hammer now.
00:12:00The only problem he has
00:12:02is that Martín looks like he's in control mode.
00:12:06128.2.
00:12:08And yeah, he'd like a bit of a bigger gap at the front,
00:12:11but he's judging it.
00:12:12We've seen about the 128 barrier is about the mark, isn't it?
00:12:16If you want to keep your tyres underneath you.
00:12:18Nobody has done more than sprint race distance on tyres.
00:12:21No, no one knows what these tyres are going to feel like
00:12:24in the second half of the race.
00:12:26It's a new surface for this year.
00:12:28What does that mean? Well, it's more abrasive.
00:12:30Fantastic for lap times.
00:12:31The bike feels great, it turns better, it offers more grip,
00:12:34but it also wears that rear tyre a little bit more.
00:12:37The new tarmac that's been laid, it's sharper, it's new.
00:12:40It's not rounded off, it's not worn in properly,
00:12:42so that can eat away at the tyre.
00:12:45Don't get me wrong, they've all got the information
00:12:47from the sprint race, so they know,
00:12:49they'll have worked out what strategies to use
00:12:51with regard to the maps they use on the bike,
00:12:54how much power they're going to allow to go through that rear tyre,
00:12:56so there's a lot they're calculating right now.
00:13:00A reminder that there's no Pedro Acosta in the race today
00:13:03after a nasty little crash at Siberia in yesterday's sprints.
00:13:07His arm was in a sling, his left arm,
00:13:09he got thrown over the top after trying to save it.
00:13:11So that means Brad Binder is the lone KTM in a sea of Ducatis,
00:13:15top seven all Ducatis, apart from Brad Binder,
00:13:18who's in fifth and really fighting hard
00:13:20with Frankie Bormodelli in front.
00:13:23Looking a bit further back, I'm looking at Ane-Bassi Nini.
00:13:25He's in sixth place, he's just set his fastest lap of the race.
00:13:28We know what he's like.
00:13:29Ane will just slowly be waking up now,
00:13:31thinking, okay, we've got 21 laps to go.
00:13:34I've saved my tyre early on, I've not overstressed it.
00:13:38Is this the point where Ane,
00:13:40because we know Ane is probably the best out of this whole field
00:13:43at saving the rear tyre?
00:13:45Yes, best at saving it, you'd say almost,
00:13:47but Marcus is the best at riding on warm tyres.
00:13:50Exactly.
00:13:51Pekka Banyai, perhaps the best at managing his pace
00:13:53throughout the race, and all of our team...
00:13:55He's the fastest.
00:13:56He's the fastest, it's about that, isn't it?
00:13:58Down towards MG, Luca Marini has to drop a position.
00:14:01He overtook under a yellow flag, so he'll just have to go back,
00:14:05and he has given the place back to Augusto Fernandez.
00:14:09That's a tricky one, because that would have been in the Honda hairpin.
00:14:11The problem with that is you set it up through Stona Corner,
00:14:14and you commit through Stona Corner,
00:14:16and you're actually in a position where you can't then back out of the pass.
00:14:18You made the pass.
00:14:20Easily done.
00:14:21Tell you what, this man...
00:14:22Oh, that's a mistake there from Ane-Bassi Nini.
00:14:24He got it out of shape, he had to roll out of the throttle.
00:14:28Let's see if Digi can squeeze past.
00:14:30Digi's an aggressive rider.
00:14:32Just had personal best laps there for Vanyaia Marquez of Morbid Deli,
00:14:36and for Mark Marquez, that is a new race lap record.
00:14:41That beats his benchmark from 2013, 11 years old,
00:14:46and he's reclaimed the race lap record here in Australia.
00:14:49So you're telling me, after all these years,
00:14:51with all these advanced technology, all the aero,
00:14:54and they're only just going quicker.
00:14:56No, the reality is the track was resurfaced in 2013,
00:15:00and it offered so much grip.
00:15:02That's why we saw incredible lap times back then.
00:15:05Yeah, and it's weather.
00:15:06We've had mixed bag, haven't we, over recent years?
00:15:09No, every year.
00:15:11Every year we've been here since...
00:15:13Well, since I've been going in 2014, we've had...
00:15:16We've not had one stable weekend, have we?
00:15:21So Mark Marquez closed the gap on that previous lap
00:15:24to half a second to Vanyaia,
00:15:26but I think they made a little mistake halfway round.
00:15:31The gap's just gone back out to 0.7.
00:15:32Here comes Digi, a long way back.
00:15:35Bastinini's going to try and ride back round the outside,
00:15:38and does it just right, that one.
00:15:40I do like Digi, he has a go.
00:15:43He's always...
00:15:44Oh, do you see that there?
00:15:46You saw a shiny bit of tarmac.
00:15:47There's a big patch there.
00:15:49There's obviously been an issue with the resurfacing.
00:15:51Look at the different lines there.
00:15:53Digi's squaring the corner over,
00:15:54and it normally gives you a better exit speed,
00:15:56but is he going to be close enough?
00:15:58I can't watch. Passing into Turn 1.
00:16:01Oh, he's...
00:16:03And that was shades of yesterday.
00:16:05Absolutely.
00:16:06My palms are sweating.
00:16:07Digi will not ride the last two rounds of the championship,
00:16:11going for a left shoulder operation.
00:16:13It's been bugging him ever since he dislocated it
00:16:16earlier in the year,
00:16:17so he's going under the knife after the Tiger All-3,
00:16:20but obviously fancied it this weekend.
00:16:24It was a terrible... I knew I'd seen something.
00:16:27Watch it now. It goes under his tyre.
00:16:29I saw something like a sticker.
00:16:30Oh, is that what I'm thinking?
00:16:32Yes.
00:16:34I saw it messing around,
00:16:36and I'm thinking he needs to focus now.
00:16:39Watch when it goes away.
00:16:40I saw the sticker. I said there's something there.
00:16:42That was it?
00:16:44What a chance.
00:16:46I have never seen anything like that.
00:16:49That's one of those excuses.
00:16:50Oh, yeah, I slipped on a tear-off.
00:16:53It's one of those where riders say it to you.
00:16:55You go, yeah, of course you did.
00:16:57The Australian rider Glenn Richards
00:16:58crashed at a British championship round at Goddard's,
00:17:01and he swears to this day he lost a front
00:17:04because he ran over a tear-off.
00:17:05And I've got to say, every time he tells a story,
00:17:07we all have a good laugh at his expense.
00:17:11Sorry, Glenn, so if you're watching now, I apologise.
00:17:15Well, here comes Mark Marquez.
00:17:16Wow, look at that for a drive from Marquez.
00:17:20He has got it taped, hasn't he, through Turn 12 all weekend.
00:17:24He's just set another fastest lap of the race.
00:17:26Not able to outbrake Bagnaia, but Marquez is coming.
00:17:31And the fact is, he has closed
00:17:34eight tenths over the last lap on Jorge Martín.
00:17:39Yeah, the big question is, where can he get past Bagnaia?
00:17:42Because it's very difficult to pass around here.
00:17:44Narrow racetrack. Bagnaia is so deep on the brakes.
00:17:49You end up in a situation where you're half trying to wait for a mistake.
00:17:51We saw the exit speed out of the last corner for Marquez.
00:17:54The problem is the 24 Ducati.
00:17:56Then once he stands up and starts going through the gearbox,
00:18:00there's nothing Mark Marquez on the year-old bike could do.
00:18:04Yeah, it's a case...
00:18:06It's like a puzzle now, isn't it, for Mark to try and work out?
00:18:08It's a puzzle he loves.
00:18:10Yes, this is what he lives for.
00:18:12He lives for the fight. He loves to battle.
00:18:15Mark Marquez, don't get me wrong,
00:18:17I'm going to say he hates being out front winning alone.
00:18:20No, everyone enjoys that.
00:18:21But he loves a battle more.
00:18:25Down towards MG.
00:18:27Through these left-handers, look how much quicker he is.
00:18:30Just look at the gap there from Bagnaia.
00:18:33And in the second part, look how much he's turning.
00:18:36We saw this, didn't we, yesterday?
00:18:38We saw it in Japan.
00:18:39He's going to try and get the run again.
00:18:40This is what we say about getting the run,
00:18:41getting the momentum, building through the corner.
00:18:43He doesn't want to be too close.
00:18:44That's good, that's better.
00:18:45Yes, he's got the momentum, he's got the speed.
00:18:47But look now, they've fractured Ducati.
00:18:50Actually, this time we're sort of neck and neck.
00:18:52But you get to the braking zone,
00:18:54and we saw what happened yesterday.
00:18:55It's so risky to try and make a pass.
00:18:58You're in the wake.
00:18:59You don't want to make a massive mistake
00:19:00and run off the track and lose a lot of time.
00:19:04He's got to work this one out.
00:19:06Not a bit of a Rubik's Cube in front of him again.
00:19:09He's just turning that thing under.
00:19:10How will that be working in terms of tyres?
00:19:13Do you know what? Well, there's one,
00:19:14it could be using more rear tyre.
00:19:15Do you know what I'm seeing?
00:19:17I'm seeing the way that Ducati's set,
00:19:19Marc Marquez's, he's got the bike turning better.
00:19:21He's probably got it slightly softer on the front.
00:19:24The issue is, on the only two heavy braking zones,
00:19:27he's got nothing to match Vanyaya.
00:19:30Vanyaya just did a personal best.
00:19:31It's like Marquez is giving him a hurry-up.
00:19:33He's bringing this race back to Martín.
00:19:36Martín would prefer more than a 0.6 gap
00:19:39in the front of this race.
00:19:40So Vanyaya is being chivvied along a little bit here
00:19:44by Marc Marquez,
00:19:45and it could be a battle of three at the front.
00:19:48Tell you what, I am noticing, though,
00:19:49the way Martín at the front, he is metronomic.
00:19:52He's just doing the same lap time.
00:19:54That's the pace he's set.
00:19:56And he's forcing the riders behind
00:19:57to use a little bit more tyre.
00:19:59Every time we go through here,
00:20:01Marc's having to use more tyre.
00:20:02Is he going to be third-time lucky?
00:20:05Is he going to try and get the run through?
00:20:07Let's have a look.
00:20:08I mean, we're on board.
00:20:10Yeah, here we go.
00:20:11Getting closer, closer.
00:20:14He's got a chance this time.
00:20:17But now in the danger zone, in the braking zone,
00:20:20not close enough.
00:20:21You can't risk it.
00:20:26Oh, a moment for Martín at the front.
00:20:28First mistakes of the weekend for Jorge Martín.
00:20:30And now he's suddenly got three of them
00:20:33at the front of this race.
00:20:34It's game on in the Australian Grand Prix.
00:20:36We're not even at the halfway point yet.
00:20:39Still 15.5 to go.
00:20:41And Bagnaia turns underneath Jorge Martín.
00:20:44It's a mistake that cost him time through one,
00:20:46then through two.
00:20:47And now Martín comes back at Bagnaia.
00:20:50We're going to see a battle for the first time this year.
00:20:53And Marquez, he needs no invitation
00:20:55to come through up to second.
00:20:56Marquez is going,
00:20:57what am I going to do?
00:20:58I said I'd like to get involved
00:21:00as soon as there was a gap.
00:21:01He was there.
00:21:02I wonder what happened there, though.
00:21:03Obviously, there was a mistake from Martín,
00:21:05and it just took him a few corners to settle.
00:21:08Well, it also will remind him
00:21:10that he has got company in this race.
00:21:12Wow, this is so good to see, isn't it?
00:21:15For the first time there,
00:21:16a bit of Martín and Bagnaia trading places,
00:21:18trading paint down towards MG.
00:21:21Surely not close enough for Marquez.
00:21:24It'll be interesting to see
00:21:25how he fares compared to Martín,
00:21:27because Martín was also quick through 11 and 12.
00:21:31Mark Law through there.
00:21:32It's incredible, isn't it?
00:21:33Gains time.
00:21:35Here we go.
00:21:36Oh, my God.
00:21:37Really see mid-part of the corner.
00:21:40Yes, it's a more similar line, isn't it?
00:21:41Yes, it is.
00:21:42But Bagnaia almost squares it off
00:21:44that little bit more,
00:21:45comes later through
00:21:46and uses the power of his Ducati.
00:21:48Mark Marquez isn't even thinking
00:21:50about overtaking Jorge Martín here.
00:21:52Martín did a 1.29.1 on that last lap.
00:21:55He was comparing that to the previous laps
00:21:58of Marquez and Bagnaia,
00:22:00which were 27.9,
00:22:02so over a second slower.
00:22:04I've got to say, this is what I expected, though, today.
00:22:06I expected Martín to be leading.
00:22:07I expected Marquez to be in the battle,
00:22:10and I was hoping Bagnaia could find something.
00:22:12We saw him this morning in the warm-up.
00:22:14They've turned that bike upside down,
00:22:16and it just looked like it was handling
00:22:17so much better for the Italians,
00:22:20so it's good to see him there.
00:22:22The reality is,
00:22:23what's it feel like for Bagnaia?
00:22:25Is he hanging on?
00:22:26Is he on his limit?
00:22:27It's so hard to tell at this point.
00:22:29He had to respond, didn't he,
00:22:30under the pressure
00:22:31that Marquez was exerting behind him,
00:22:34and in doing so,
00:22:35he managed to get through on Martín,
00:22:38but as Martín fought back,
00:22:40he opened the door,
00:22:42and Marc Marquez came barreling through.
00:22:45Martín's bike looks so stable.
00:22:49The weight doesn't kick.
00:22:50Look, this is a perfect example down into MG.
00:22:53Normally, you see the weight transfer,
00:22:55you see the bike want to fishtail.
00:22:57Like it's on rails, it really does.
00:23:00Whatever they've found there with that setting
00:23:02on the Pramac Ducati,
00:23:03he looks so comfortable.
00:23:06Remember, they've got to keep their tyres underneath them.
00:23:09That's what Piero Taramasso from Michelin was saying.
00:23:13The tyre will get to the end,
00:23:15but it's up to the riders to manage things,
00:23:17and I think in this situation here,
00:23:19for the likes of Marc Marquez in particular,
00:23:22who's had to work really hard,
00:23:24had to make up the ground he lost at the start of the race,
00:23:28he's happy at the moment to have Martín just in his sights.
00:23:33Yeah, absolutely.
00:23:34Still can't believe he ran over his own tyre.
00:23:38He was messing around, he knew it had gone underneath his bike.
00:23:40Honestly, you can't believe the chances of that happening.
00:23:44So, so unlucky.
00:23:46Thankfully, it's not cost him anything.
00:23:49In fact, it might have cost him a little bit of rear tyre.
00:23:56Through Siberia they go,
00:23:58and it is a chilly day in the air.
00:24:00We're at the halfway point of this race.
00:24:02Thirteen and a half down, thirteen and a half to go,
00:24:05and there is nothing to choose between the top three
00:24:08in the championship as well and the top three in this race.
00:24:13Remember, Martín leads Bañaya, who's in third, by 16 points.
00:24:17A sixth stand, the gap will be out to 25.
00:24:24You always used to say 25 was the benchmark, wasn't it,
00:24:27that you wanted as a lead in the championship?
00:24:28A full race weekend.
00:24:29A full race win, but now with the sprint races, it's a change.
00:24:32Yeah.
00:24:34If Martín finished second in the remaining three sprints
00:24:37and three races,
00:24:40and Bañaya won them all,
00:24:42he'd only make up 24 points.
00:24:44So 25 is the amount that Martín needs
00:24:47to only have to finish second in every remaining race.
00:24:51Good response there for Jorge Martín.
00:24:53He's set his fastest lap of the race at this point at 27.8.
00:24:58That said, both the riders in the battle have responded.
00:25:01This looks like a nice battle here.
00:25:03It does.
00:25:04Gian Antonio got through on Bastinini.
00:25:05They're both trying to find a way through on Brad Binder.
00:25:08Frankie Morbidelli's just pulled a little gap
00:25:10as they all do battle behind.
00:25:13Don't you feel Maverick's just sat there,
00:25:15probably saving his tyres, Maverick?
00:25:17We know that Aprile is quite kind on tyres.
00:25:20He'll be watching these lot battle it out,
00:25:22stuff each other up. That's a big mistake there.
00:25:24Yeah, and that's allowed Binder back through on Bastinini.
00:25:27Is Maverick going to get through as well?
00:25:30No, says Fabio Di Giano Antonio.
00:25:34But Maverick quite often is the fastest at the end of a race.
00:25:37It feels like Bastinini in that,
00:25:38just their style alludes itself to it.
00:25:40You've got a feeling now where Maverick is.
00:25:43He's definitely got a top six in him in this race.
00:25:45I don't know, though, the other thing is,
00:25:47the Aprilio in the long race, though,
00:25:48has suffered, hasn't it, later on?
00:25:50That's true.
00:25:52At the front, the gap's still fairly steady.
00:25:54Personal best laps on the previous one
00:25:56for Martin and for Bagnaia.
00:25:58But Marquez and Bagnaia had identical lap times.
00:26:01It's so tight at the front.
00:26:03That's in the top left.
00:26:05This is the battle raging between Binder and Di Giano Antonio.
00:26:08For fifth, one more, actually, with Ene-Bastinini,
00:26:11who's just behind Brad Binder.
00:26:16Brad Binder's a little bit further up the road.
00:26:19Unwell, just to shake off the shackles.
00:26:22Wow, another fantastic lap.
00:26:24Jorge Martin leading, set his own, again,
00:26:27the fastest lap for him of the race.
00:26:30But yet again, Marquez has been able to respond,
00:26:32but Bagnaia, you feel like he's just at his limit.
00:26:37He's now one, there you go, you can see there, look at that.
00:26:401.2 behind Jorge Martin.
00:26:420.9 behind Mark Marquez, who is keeping Martin honest.
00:26:46We knew he'd have a say somehow in this title fight.
00:26:49Mark Marquez, maybe not to win it,
00:26:52but at the moment, he's taking points away
00:26:54from his future teammates.
00:27:02Through the hayshed, beautiful part of the racetrack,
00:27:05as this track flows up and over the top of Luque Heights,
00:27:09through the left-hander at turn nine,
00:27:11down towards, dropping down, steep down there into MG Corner.
00:27:19Jorge Martin's been given a scare in this race.
00:27:22Pekka Bagnaia got through briefly,
00:27:25but now Bagnaia looks a little bit lost.
00:27:30Yeah, the problem is, once the gap gets that big,
00:27:33when it's up to nearly a second, you do lose that toe,
00:27:36and it's a little bit disheartening.
00:27:38What can happen as well, you only need to have one big slide,
00:27:41you lose the front, you save it on your knee,
00:27:42you know, we don't see it,
00:27:44and at that point, that is the bike talking to you to say,
00:27:47listen, today, third place, we're going to have to take it.
00:27:51Beautiful shots of the bus straight
00:27:53as they go through the southern loop,
00:27:55that's the Southern Ocean, down to Tasmania on one side,
00:27:58Antarctica next, and that's why,
00:28:00just a little bit of a chill in the air,
00:28:01even though the sunshine is bearing down on this racetrack.
00:28:05A little mark on Bagnaia's tyre,
00:28:09just starting a little bit on the middle part, actually.
00:28:12It's the left edge, which is both asymmetric, front and rear.
00:28:16The left edge, which really gets a battering,
00:28:18and it's the harder edge of the tyres.
00:28:21Right behind number four.
00:28:24Okay, it's not...
00:28:26Dobby?
00:28:27Yes, I was going to say, it's not Brandi Dupouillet this time,
00:28:30it's Dobby, so what was he saying?
00:28:31Turn four is the danger point?
00:28:33We thought it was the corner, didn't we?
00:28:35Back in Misano, when we were talking about turn 14,
00:28:38that's where the danger point of the racetrack is.
00:28:42Yes, do you reckon it's that, turn four again?
00:28:45You're going to have to say yes, it would make sense,
00:28:47because that does add up.
00:28:49There's no rider number four, so, yes.
00:28:52Yes, that is, if you look, and it's interesting,
00:28:55because if you're Jorge Martin, you have zero information.
00:28:58You don't know what's going on behind you,
00:29:00you don't know where Mark's potentially strong.
00:29:03Once you get that information in your pocket, it's like,
00:29:05okay, there's 11 laps to go, now 10.
00:29:08All I've got to make sure I do is I keep it relatively defensive into there.
00:29:13Slightly wide there for Jorge Martin, not a lot,
00:29:15but when we're talking about how precise he is,
00:29:18just missed the apex ever so slightly.
00:29:20This one's like a double one-two, he went in early,
00:29:21then you come back out, then you cut it back into the kerb.
00:29:26Again, slightly wide, try and stand the bike up
00:29:29to give the edge of the tyre a bit of a rest,
00:29:31and then into the best corner on the track,
00:29:33Stoner corner, turn three.
00:29:36And this is where we think the team are saying,
00:29:38Marquez is strong, this is where you're going to have to defend.
00:29:42Put your bike in the middle of the racetrack, Jorge.
00:29:46Bagnaia is dropping further back now.
00:29:48Can't maintain the pace of the front two.
00:29:52He's one and a half seconds behind Marc Marquez.
00:29:55Yeah, Bagnaia needs these two to have a go at each other.
00:29:59Bagnaia needs Marc Marquez to have a lunch,
00:30:03but if you're Marc right now, why would you?
00:30:05There's no need to.
00:30:06Whilst you can see your pit bulge increasing from the rider behind,
00:30:10you're pulling away from Bagnaia.
00:30:12You just sit there and slap a stick at him.
00:30:14Martín had a little...
00:30:16Well, he's going through the gears there.
00:30:19The only reason Marc might want to attack early,
00:30:22and only he will know this, is how the front of that bike feels.
00:30:25Is the front tyre pressure a little bit high?
00:30:28Does it feel like he's losing...
00:30:30Yeah, there was a tyre pressure penalty for Fabio Di Gianantonio yesterday.
00:30:34He got eight seconds added to his sprint time.
00:30:36Of course, in MotoGP, it's 16 seconds that would be added to your time.
00:30:42And look at that, on that lap,
00:30:43the lead in two were 0.9 of a second faster than Bagnaia.
00:30:47And that's Bagnaia.
00:30:48Not that he's given up, but you're literally there.
00:30:50You concede to the fact that, okay, fair enough.
00:30:54And pretty much to the rest of the field, Neil, as well.
00:30:57Everyone else in those 29s,
00:30:59really only Di Gian Vignales and not.
00:31:05Oh, that got really close in there at the Miller hairpin.
00:31:11I thought there might have been a little bit of contact there.
00:31:16It's so hot behind Jorge Martín.
00:31:18Martín's just taking some funky lines at the moment.
00:31:21And when I say funky, what I mean is,
00:31:23one, he's protecting his tyre, he's obviously trying to do that,
00:31:26but also, I think he's protecting his line a bit.
00:31:28Yeah, I think you're right.
00:31:30Martín's lines are more Vs.
00:31:32He's going in a little bit hotter,
00:31:34slowing it in the middle, standing up on exit.
00:31:36That gives the side of the tyre a little bit more of an easier time.
00:31:39Yeah, Marquez is definitely carrying more corner speed.
00:31:42You know, when you said earlier about how stable Martín's bike looked,
00:31:46it doesn't look as stable over the last couple of laps.
00:31:48It just looks like it's starting to get out of shape.
00:31:51I want to remind everyone,
00:31:53they have hardly had any time on a fully dry track.
00:31:56They had Friday afternoon,
00:31:59but they had to turn that into a qualifying session
00:32:02because it was the only time they had on Friday.
00:32:03There's Marc Marquez, pulls out of the slipstream.
00:32:06He can get close to the bike
00:32:08with the pace he has through the final corner.
00:32:11You get close to the bike in front,
00:32:13he doesn't seem to have the top end to get past.
00:32:15No, which is what we've seen all year with that 23 Ducati.
00:32:19It's down on power.
00:32:21The Ride-Out device on the 24 Ducati works much better,
00:32:24so it offers a little bit more grip.
00:32:26It offers less wheelie, so you can use more power,
00:32:29and that's a graphic example.
00:32:31Marc gets out of the corner a little bit quicker,
00:32:33stand the bike up, and there's nothing you can do.
00:32:35The bike doesn't continue to go forward,
00:32:37so if Marc is to make a pass, it's going to be tight,
00:32:40it's going to have to be a lunge.
00:32:42There's a couple of places, obviously turn four,
00:32:44the Miller corner, the MG corner is an obvious one.
00:32:48Or does he try a sneaky one?
00:32:50Does he go into turn one as close as he can?
00:32:53You leave the door slightly open into two,
00:32:55maybe he's got to try and surprise Jorge Martín.
00:33:02Over the top of Luque Heights.
00:33:05Martín, yeah, no defending there.
00:33:09Door was wide open, but Márquez just could not get close enough.
00:33:13Well, he'll see that, won't he, Marc?
00:33:14Yeah.
00:33:15He'll see, he's getting all the information here.
00:33:17Martín has none.
00:33:19Tense times for Gino Borsoi, team boss down there at Pramac.
00:33:23And they cross the line, seven laps to go.
00:33:26We have got a finale coming in the Australian Grand Prix.
00:33:31Marc Márquez on the 93, chasing Jorge Martín on the 89.
00:33:36If you want, not going to break Jorge Martín into turn one,
00:33:39he is deep into there.
00:33:41He's been working on that all weekend,
00:33:42so it's more of one of these, like I said.
00:33:44That switchback, into two, yeah.
00:33:47Or even around here, Marc's so good around turn two.
00:33:52You go out, you don't go out wide in the middle,
00:33:54but you leave enough room to stick a front wheel in,
00:33:56and Marc will not need a second invitation.
00:33:59There's one thing I can guarantee you,
00:34:01as the laps click down,
00:34:02if there's a chance, Marc will risk everything.
00:34:07He's not thinking about the championship,
00:34:09he's thinking about a race victory.
00:34:10He's thinking about third in the championship.
00:34:12He's thinking about his legacy.
00:34:14He's thinking about another Grand Prix win to his name here.
00:34:18There's his other arm, Gemma, watching on.
00:34:21I had to remind him what position he finished in the sprint race yesterday,
00:34:24which is wonderful.
00:34:27Through Luki.
00:34:28I tell you, though, look, I mean, your top three,
00:34:31Jorge Martin, Marc Marquez, Peko Bagnaia,
00:34:34I mean, they're streets ahead of everybody.
00:34:37You look at fourth place, Anil Bassanini.
00:34:39He's ten seconds behind, there's seven laps to go.
00:34:42There's only been 20 laps,
00:34:43then half a second a lap faster than the rest of the field.
00:34:47And as you work your way down after...
00:34:51With seven laps to go, you've got, let's say,
00:34:53from Miller's 16 seconds behind, you'll go a bit further down.
00:34:55Alex Marquez is in 15th, like, miles behind.
00:34:59The pace at the front is incredible.
00:35:03And Martin's trying again.
00:35:05That lap time, then a 28.1 at this point in the race.
00:35:09But Martin is trying to break him, but Marc's going with him.
00:35:12He was four thousands quicker than Martin on that last lap.
00:35:15Marc Marquez, he's trying to suss it out from this position.
00:35:20And normally, this is why Marc Marquez has won eight World Championships,
00:35:24because when the tires go off,
00:35:26he can normally extract the most out of them.
00:35:28And we're at that point now, aren't we? Six laps to go.
00:35:31The gauntlet has been laid down at Jorge Martin's door.
00:35:34You want this championship,
00:35:36well, you're going to have to go hand-to-hand with Marc Marquez.
00:35:39Out of Siberia.
00:35:43Through the fast left into the hayshed,
00:35:46fourth gear right-hander.
00:35:47He's just surely now, Marquez, he's sat there saving a lunge somewhere,
00:35:53saving for a last moment.
00:35:54I know Jorge Martin's pushing on the pace,
00:35:56and I know that Marc Marquez,
00:35:58he's probably having to push to his absolute limit to stick with him.
00:36:01But you just feel like every single time the gap gets up to two tenths,
00:36:05Marc closes it up again.
00:36:07It's like he's saying,
00:36:08if I'm going to do this, I'm going to give myself the last lap to do so.
00:36:11What do you think?
00:36:12Yeah, it is one of them.
00:36:13And some of the beauty of the way he's done it,
00:36:16it is one of them.
00:36:17And some of the beauty of doing that is you don't give the rider
00:36:20that you've passed time to respond, time to look at you.
00:36:23We always say at this point in the race,
00:36:25Marc has all the information.
00:36:27He knows exactly what's going on.
00:36:29When you're leading, do you know what happens as well?
00:36:30When you're leading, your anxiety level builds.
00:36:32If you can't break the rider from behind,
00:36:35look at the lap times again, 28.0.
00:36:37They're nearly a second a lap faster than everybody.
00:36:39That's the point there, I think, that turn two there,
00:36:42when Marc just turns it tighter in all the left-handers.
00:36:45He's turning it underneath, Jorge Martín.
00:36:47Again, 128.0 from Martín.
00:36:51Again, 128.0 from Márquez.
00:36:53Three hundred quicker, Márquez, than Martín, on that last lap.
00:36:58Again, down into the Miller hairpin.
00:37:01Martín is resolute, he holds firm.
00:37:03He's under pressure.
00:37:04As things stand, he is responding to it beautifully.
00:37:11Through Siberia, on board.
00:37:12Let's listen to the GP23 of Marc Márquez.
00:37:19You don't win 61 MotoGP races
00:37:22by not having a little bit of savvy race craft.
00:37:27Come on, then, Neil, try to work out that puzzle.
00:37:31Where do you see it happening?
00:37:32Again, you see how much quicker he is able to enter into MG there.
00:37:37But...
00:37:39Jorge Martín, standing firm, not giving a glint.
00:37:43I'm delaying answering your question because it's not easy at all.
00:37:46I'm having to fill the gap as you try and work out where Marc can do it.
00:37:50Not into turn one, so that means it probably will be into turn one.
00:37:53But I can't see into turn one.
00:37:55Watch how late this man is on the brakes in front.
00:37:57There you go.
00:37:58So, to pass Jorge Martín into turn one, you are going to go wide.
00:38:02This is the opportunity.
00:38:04That's one into there, which is really a bit more.
00:38:06A bit of a slide.
00:38:07So, now, on that point there in the middle.
00:38:10He's right on the rear tyre of Jorge Martín.
00:38:13Marc Márquez, the pace dropped a couple of tenths
00:38:16on that previous lap.
00:38:17Over the little crest, down into Stoner Corner.
00:38:20Is there a chance this time in heaven?
00:38:22Look at the drive that Márquez has got.
00:38:24And Martín was covering it up.
00:38:26Martín covered that up
00:38:27because Márquez got much better drive on that occasion.
00:38:30And Márquez, he's going to attack.
00:38:32He's gone round the outside of him.
00:38:33And he takes over the lead in the opposite lane.
00:38:36He needed the Australian Grand Prix.
00:38:37He set that up.
00:38:38Martín tried to defend.
00:38:40And Márquez just drove underneath him.
00:38:42Yes, three and a half laps to go now.
00:38:43You're not thinking about your tyres.
00:38:45No conservation at all.
00:38:46It's full attack mode.
00:38:48Everything you have.
00:38:51Jorge Martín is finally going to get a chance
00:38:53to see where Marc Márquez is strong.
00:38:55Does he fight straight back?
00:38:56Does he sit there and try and get a look at Márquez?
00:38:59Is he going to attack down into Engie Corner?
00:39:02Not on this occasion.
00:39:04So, finally, we have a change in the lead
00:39:06that's stuck in this race.
00:39:08And it comes with just over three laps remaining.
00:39:12Martín will see that through here, Márquez is great.
00:39:16Excellent through the corner,
00:39:17but will probably have the legs
00:39:19as they head down towards the first corner
00:39:21down the Gardner Straight into Doohans.
00:39:23Let's have a watch of Jorge Martín.
00:39:25Is he able to get straight back through?
00:39:27Of course he is.
00:39:28Of course he is.
00:39:29Márquez was across the line first, crucially.
00:39:32And that is the difference.
00:39:33And that is the difference.
00:39:34That sums up this season,
00:39:36how much better the 2024 Ducati is.
00:39:39Look at Marc turning through two and three.
00:39:43He's just closing in on all of the left-handers.
00:39:46But then when the bikes really get their legs stretched,
00:39:51there's no way Márquez can hang with Martín.
00:39:55Oh, this is going to be tight.
00:39:56That's a big lunge, a big block pass.
00:39:58And Marc Márquez comes through to lead once more.
00:40:01That's a lunge.
00:40:02Thankfully, no contact, and they both stay upright.
00:40:05I think that came from downtown cows.
00:40:07I mean, that was a lunge.
00:40:09I mean, yeah, it's getting borderline.
00:40:12I'm glad Jorge Martín stood up,
00:40:13but we know Jorge Martín's a fighter.
00:40:15He'll be having none of that.
00:40:16And he knows that his bike, his Ducati's,
00:40:19got that little bit of extra speed.
00:40:22The one question I was going to throw into there,
00:40:24does Martín think,
00:40:25look, I'm not going to give it in,
00:40:27but does he now start to think about the championships?
00:40:29Because he's going to extend his lead over Jorge Martín,
00:40:32over Peco Bagnaia.
00:40:35Do I want to get into a battle with Martín Márquez,
00:40:38with a person who never knows that he's beaten,
00:40:41who would trade paint, who would barge me off the track?
00:40:44Do I need that?
00:40:45Well, he'll try and pass cleanly
00:40:47as he comes out of the final corner.
00:40:49He's going to have the pace
00:40:50as they go down towards Turn 1 again.
00:40:52Márquez is leading across the line,
00:40:55but Jorge Martín this time is not able to get through.
00:40:59So, Márquez leads.
00:41:00This is where Márquez struck into 2.
00:41:02Is Martín going to come through now?
00:41:04No.
00:41:05Márquez firmly shuts the door.
00:41:07It's so interesting.
00:41:08You look at the 23 Ducati with Marc on,
00:41:10it turns better,
00:41:12but the Ducati with Jorge Martín
00:41:14just punches out of all the corners so much better.
00:41:17You feel like the turning is Marc Márquez, though,
00:41:20rather than the bike, don't you?
00:41:22Just his skills on left-hand corners
00:41:24into the Miller hairpin.
00:41:26And again, no way through for Jorge Martín,
00:41:29heading out towards Siberia.
00:41:31Still, Pekka Obanjia sits in third,
00:41:34ready to pick up the pieces,
00:41:36should any accident befall these two at the front.
00:41:39I'll tell you what, Marc Márquez has had a couple
00:41:41of really good corners there.
00:41:42In fact, Martín was a little bit deep into Turn 4.
00:41:45Fabio Di D'Antonio just set a personal best.
00:41:48In the 27s, he's just taken an Airbascinini,
00:41:51got a lap to go for fourth place.
00:41:53There's a good battle going on for the remaining places,
00:41:57but this is the one we want to see.
00:41:58There's a yellow flag further back
00:42:00as Marc Márquez comes through 11 and 12.
00:42:02Frankie Carcani, his crew chief, watches on.
00:42:05We are going to have one more lap to go,
00:42:08two and three-quarter miles
00:42:10of this Phillip Island circuit
00:42:12to decide who's going to take the 25 points.
00:42:15And the way Marc Márquez has just ridden on this lap
00:42:18suggests he may be the one to take the victory.
00:42:21Across the line, he's back towards the 128.0s.
00:42:25He has managed his size,
00:42:27despite an awful start in this race, to perfection.
00:42:31Absolutely incredible, but I'll tell you what,
00:42:33Martín's quick through this part,
00:42:34so if he can get a good exit out of two,
00:42:37he's then going to just hook that.
00:42:38Marc Márquez makes a bit of a mistake.
00:42:40Marc's going to be defensive into Turn 4.
00:42:42That can easily push you wide.
00:42:44It's so easy to make a mistake.
00:42:46This is Tophi's sauna corner,
00:42:47then it's all about timing the braking perfectly.
00:42:50Trail braking, holding your breath,
00:42:52hoping the front doesn't fall.
00:42:53Yes, and he smoked the rear tyre through Stoner Corner,
00:42:57just like the Aussie would have done in his Day 2
00:43:00into Siberia, gave Martín no chance.
00:43:02In fact, I thought Martín might have just gone
00:43:05that little bit deep through there,
00:43:06trying to come back at him.
00:43:08And Márquez has enough in his pocket, surely now.
00:43:100.6 of a second, no mistakes with half a lap remaining.
00:43:14This, after the start that he had in the race,
00:43:17is one of his best races, I have to say.
00:43:20It's incredible to see what he's done.
00:43:22Yes, the absolute limit.
00:43:23The rider making the difference.
00:43:25You saw when Martín was behind him,
00:43:27he has a better bike, far superior.
00:43:29More power, more exit speed, faster on the straights.
00:43:32But this man is faster around the corners.
00:43:34Absolutely outstanding, Gav.
00:43:37We have had an epic battle here,
00:43:38as always at the Australian Grand Prix.
00:43:41But he is the master of the fight.
00:43:43He still knows how to come out on top when it matters.
00:43:46And Mart Márquez somehow has won the Australian Grand Prix
00:43:50from Jorge Martín in second.
00:43:52Peco Bagnaio is going to come across the line in third.
00:43:55And he'll have to thank his future teammates
00:43:57for taking another five points out of Jorge Martín.
00:44:00Yes, that could be massive, as we know, with this championship.
00:44:03Obviously, Martín's extended his lead,
00:44:05but what a ride from Mart Márquez.
00:44:08We get criticized sometimes for saying good things about him.
00:44:11I mean, what a ride.
00:44:14Look at that.
00:44:15I mean, the next 23 Ducatis,
00:44:17or the next person on the equal machine,
00:44:19he was 12 seconds behind him.
00:44:22Incredible ride from Mart Márquez after that start.
00:44:25That's the bit that makes it,
00:44:26as the Cressida team celebrate.
00:44:29This will go on long, I'm telling you.
00:44:31He is enjoying it, and who can blame him?
00:44:35I mean, he loves this place anyway.
00:44:37He's had so much success here over the years at Phillip Island,
00:44:42and he has done it again, Neil.
00:44:44That is, I have to say, I was expecting him to be in the mix,
00:44:47but not having been, what, was he 10th at Turn 1 in the first lap?
00:44:52We need to watch that again.
00:44:53Imagine at the breaking point into Turn 1,
00:44:56he'll have been lower down than 10th.
00:44:58How lucky was he?
00:44:59I mean, the fact to get the tear off under the back wheel,
00:45:02it spun up.
00:45:03Thankfully, it didn't go far enough around where he flicked him off,
00:45:05but, yeah, what a win.
00:45:08Win number 62 in the MotoGP class,
00:45:12win number 88 in overall Grand Prix wins.
00:45:16I mean, just...
00:45:19Yeah, another Bugatti win, again, it extends there to 14.
00:45:24A warning, he's going to be on a much better motorcycle next year.
00:45:28You saw it.
00:45:30Pekka Van Jaaier just eased past him.
00:45:33Jorge Martín eased past him.
00:45:35He's just asking for the Marquez flag.
00:45:39How cool is that for some fan?
00:45:42That's brilliant, he's just waved him over.
00:45:43That's not someone from the team.
00:45:45That's made his weekend, that's made his lifetime.
00:45:48I was that guy who ran out with the flag at Philippe Allen.
00:45:51This is the moment, Neil.
00:45:53It was so Marquez, wasn't it?
00:45:56Oh, that wasn't the one.
00:45:57Oh, sorry, he turns underneath him.
00:45:59Yeah, it was the lap before when we had the break-off.
00:46:02Yeah, there was a chance, there was room.
00:46:05Was it a mistake from Marquez?
00:46:06Yeah, it was, but exactly, you've just been forced into it.
00:46:10The reality is, you know that there's going to be a move in today.
00:46:13You brake one meter later, then you end up missing the apex.
00:46:15It'd be interesting to know if the team had said,
00:46:17defend at four, if rider number four means,
00:46:20you know, that's the corner you're vulnerable.
00:46:22I'm going to say, it must be, it must be that was his show.
00:46:25Gino Borsoin, it's not...
00:46:29Having real-life nightmares.
00:46:31Yeah, that was the lap before,
00:46:33so then obviously the lap after, then what does Martín do?
00:46:36Brakes a little bit later to prevent that from happening,
00:46:38and then that's what you end up with, that situation.
00:46:41Oh, that's a great race.
00:46:43I'm so pleased we've had it,
00:46:45because after the turgid affair of Metegi,
00:46:47we've been served up a classic here.
00:46:50Oh, can we come here every week?
00:46:52We said it a year ago, Neil, after Joan Zarco won that race,
00:46:55another one that was pinched from under Martín's nose.
00:46:58Yeah, absolutely, but we're in Buriram next weekend,
00:47:00and think of the last-lap battles we've had there
00:47:03with that beautiful last corner.
00:47:05Well, last year, wasn't it?
00:47:06It was Martín versus Bagnaia versus Binder.
00:47:09Yeah, via Brest.
00:47:10It was one of the best battles we ever had.
00:47:12Exactly, via Brest.
00:47:13Marc Márquez is all right round there, you know.
00:47:15You remember his battles that he's had round there
00:47:17with the likes of Fabio Vartararo, yeah.
00:47:25That will taste sweet for Marc Márquez.
00:47:2951 seconds faster than last year's Australian Grand Prix.
00:47:34Obviously, that was in very strange conditions.
00:47:39But shows what a new asphalt can do.
00:47:46Caleb Messini welcomes him in back in.
00:47:50That's his third win of the season, of course, in the main race.
00:47:54I wonder if he'll hold up the number three.
00:47:58It's a serious question, Gav.
00:47:59Do you think he...
00:48:00Look, they've all got tear-offs!
00:48:03Do you think he regrets leaving Honda?
00:48:06Yeah, I'm not sure.
00:48:09Do you think he's enjoying his racing now?
00:48:11What was his goal at the start of the year, though?
00:48:14This alone? Moments like this?
00:48:16Can I enjoy it again?
00:48:17Well, he's not only enjoying it, he's winning.
00:48:19He's showing that he's back to maybe not his best just yet,
00:48:24but, I don't know, maybe on a GP25?
00:48:27How's that package going to look?
00:48:29Aragon, Pisano, Phillip Island.
00:48:31He has got the number three!
00:48:35Aragon, Pisano and Phillip Island now.
00:48:38Explain the story.
00:48:39Well, yesterday, when he qualified in second on the grid,
00:48:43he held up the number three,
00:48:44and his girlfriend there, Gemma, had to remind him,
00:48:47no, you finished second.
00:48:49And so, don't worry, he finished second in the sprint,
00:48:51he held up the number three.
00:48:53And that's where the number three comes in.
00:48:55What this for a freak accident.
00:48:57Throws it away, wind blows it back underneath the bike,
00:49:00he realises that, so then he tries to move it.
00:49:03I saw this going on and I'm thinking, why is he not focusing?
00:49:06We said, what's going on underneath his bike?
00:49:08Got a problem?
00:49:10This is incredible.
00:49:14That breaks traction enough for it to stay there.
00:49:16So where is that tear off now, because that's worth something.
00:49:19Look at where he is, though, on the field.
00:49:21Right, let's see if we can watch it all the way into turn one,
00:49:23this will be really interesting.
00:49:27I mean, he's just almost standing still, has to roll right.
00:49:30Bagnani does brilliantly, I have to say.
00:49:32He's almost got away as quickly as Fabric Vinales.
00:49:35But he was swallowed up by the field,
00:49:37he must have lunged down into turn one and two.
00:49:39Never.
00:49:41His brother ended up off the track,
00:49:43so his brother probably got nerfed out.
00:49:45Probably was the burn.
00:49:46Jorge Martín, I think at one point in that race,
00:49:50I think you said it, he was obviously still going to keep pushing,
00:49:53but not going to take too many more risks.
00:49:55Having seen that Mark was willing to send him wide
00:49:57and probably slam into the side of him.
00:49:59Absolutely, yeah.
00:50:00He wasn't going to ride over his limit for that win.
00:50:03He's got a 20-point lead in this championship.
00:50:06You know, I mentioned there about the second place.
00:50:08The reason I say it is because it seems Martín,
00:50:11remember that run of races in the middle part of the season
00:50:14when he was second in Assen in the sprint,
00:50:16second in Silverstone in both races,
00:50:19second in Austria in both races,
00:50:20second in Aragon in both races.
00:50:22If he does that now,
00:50:23this man's going to find it hard to take the championship back.
00:50:26You and your team are famous now for fighting back
00:50:29from Saturday to Sunday, repairing it.
00:50:31You made it a lot better.
00:50:32It wasn't quite enough to fight for the win.
00:50:35How do you feel about it?
00:50:37Nothing, then.
00:50:38More than this, also today was difficult, so that's okay.
00:50:42We have now two races where I feel much better to go with,
00:50:46in terms of feeling.
00:50:48Today we managed to improve a bit.
00:50:49I tried everything I could to stay with Jorge and with Marc,
00:50:55but I started to struggle a lot in the entrance of the corners,
00:50:58and they did a better job than us.
00:51:01Congratulations.
00:51:02Yeah, Paco said it is okay.
00:51:05It is not okay.
00:51:06That interview said it all.
00:51:08They were entering the corners better than us.
00:51:10It's been a couple of gripes, hasn't there, recently?
00:51:12He wants bits on the bike.
00:51:14They're not allowed to, he says, contractually have bits
00:51:17that he wants.
00:51:18Ducati could do more for me.
00:51:20I didn't realise that.
00:51:22A little bit tense, yeah.
00:51:28Jorge Martín celebrating his 13th podium of the year,
00:51:3113th from Man United, too.
00:51:34And now 20 points between them.
00:51:38We went on really good.
00:51:40He's still at the line from Jorge Martín.
00:51:43A little tussle, didn't we, between Martín and Pagnaia?
00:51:47They're desperate not to battle for each other.
00:51:49Weird, isn't it?
00:51:51I think he's forcing a smile there, Jorge Martín,
00:51:53but knows he's taking more points out of Paco.
00:51:55Jorge, what a job today, you know,
00:51:58with all that hanging over you,
00:51:59that pressure of the championship on your shoulders,
00:52:02and still fighting like you did.
00:52:04Yeah, it was a difficult race, for sure.
00:52:07For sure, you know, I had to be very, very careful.
00:52:11For sure, you know, I had a strong pace,
00:52:13but the feeling wasn't the same as yesterday.
00:52:16The wind was really strong, so I started to lose the front,
00:52:18and I couldn't make this big gap.
00:52:21Then, as soon as Paco overtook me,
00:52:23I said, OK, you need to change a bit the energy,
00:52:25push a little bit more.
00:52:26I started to push this 27 up,
00:52:3127.9, 27.8,
00:52:32and then, yeah, I knew Marquez was there.
00:52:34I knew he was going to try a turn four.
00:52:37For sure, you know, he had nothing to lose,
00:52:39so I traded the game, but it was too much risk
00:52:42if I wanted to make a move.
00:52:44So, yeah, another two points.
00:52:46I took a position, ten more points,
00:52:48and I'm going to Thailand,
00:52:49and this is also a track that I like.
00:52:51Great job, congratulations.
00:52:5320 more points.
00:52:54It was, actually, 20 points.
00:52:56The gap as well between himself and Paco Bagnaia,
00:53:00but pretty much what we said,
00:53:01he knew turn four was where he was going to attack.
00:53:04Do you know what's really interesting, though?
00:53:05He said he changed the energy as soon as Bagnaia passed him.
00:53:08You could see that as well, which I like.
00:53:11That was the killer instinct.
00:53:12Yeah, respond.
00:53:13Respond.
00:53:15But clearly, he didn't feel that great.
00:53:16We mentioned about the cool wind,
00:53:18about the cool temperatures,
00:53:19and the hard front tire, all these things.
00:53:22He's already had a couple of front-end locks,
00:53:24hasn't he, late in races?
00:53:26So, let's hear from our race winner.
00:53:28For the third time this year,
00:53:29Marc Marquez is on top of the box in MotoGP.
00:53:35Marc, you're always box office.
00:53:38Thanks for throwing that tear-off under your wheel
00:53:40and giving us some entertainment on the fight back through.
00:53:43Brilliant ride.
00:53:45You know, it was always something happened,
00:53:49but this time, I never pulled the tear-off in the start
00:53:53because, you know, for the start and everything,
00:53:56even it's dangerous,
00:53:57but this time, when I was putting the whole shot,
00:54:00the front device,
00:54:02just something was super big here,
00:54:04and then I didn't have a chance, and I take off.
00:54:06Unlucky, it was under my wheel, and I saw it.
00:54:09I tried to remove, but it was impossible,
00:54:12and in fact, when I released the clutch, I started to spin.
00:54:15But, yeah, I don't know where I was the first corner,
00:54:17but I overtook many riders, and yeah.
00:54:20I thought that at one time it was impossible to catch Martin,
00:54:24but then in lap five, six, I started to get the rhythm,
00:54:27and yeah, I was more calm
00:54:29because in the beginning, I was a bit stressful,
00:54:31but super happy for the victory.
00:54:33It's true that Martin pushed all the race,
00:54:35and I was saving the tyre to have the last attack.
00:54:38Fantastic ride. Congratulations.
00:54:40Thank you very much. Thank you. Bye-bye.
00:54:43Michael, it really was such an incredible ride,
00:54:46and you've got a man there who had absolutely nothing to lose
00:54:50versus a man who had absolutely everything to lose,
00:54:54and Jorge gave it his best shot,
00:54:55but what a story that is,
00:54:57from the tear-off to tearing off, quite literally.
00:54:59Yeah. Weirdly, he seemed to have it all under control.
00:55:03The fact that he still felt that he had saved his tyre
00:55:05despite coming through the field,
00:55:07obviously, this was the moment.
00:55:08He didn't get his tyre off as he ran up to the grid.
00:55:11He dropped it under his bike.
00:55:13A little bit of a rookie error,
00:55:14but it's due to activating the lowering device
00:55:16and the rolling burnout off the line.
00:55:18To me, I do not know how he managed to get through here
00:55:22and battle with the Nea Bastionini in lap one.
00:55:24That was such a run through turn one and turn two.
00:55:27We didn't actually see it. We need to see how he gained the ground back
00:55:30because he was back just ahead of his brother entering turn one,
00:55:33but relentless through the field.
00:55:35He was just so strong.
00:55:37These overtakes into turn one,
00:55:39then when he got alongside Pekko and Jorge,
00:55:42he couldn't use the move into turn one.
00:55:45He had to get it creative.
00:55:46He got a little lucky here with Jorge opening the door.
00:55:49That disposed of Pekko.
00:55:50Then this one was set up perfect.
00:55:52He sort of goaded Martín into it,
00:55:54let him go in there deep, then it's side by side
00:55:56and the run down into Siberia,
00:55:58but Jorge immediately ready to fight back.
00:56:00So, Marc puts it around the outside
00:56:02and then the GP24 engine puts Martín in a position
00:56:05for a clean overtake into turn one,
00:56:07but this was the race-winning overtake from downtown.
00:56:10Lets up the brakes, sends it up the inside
00:56:12and takes Jorge a little wide
00:56:14and then puts three strong laps on.
00:56:16And just ekes out a gap.
00:56:18Comfortable victor, but what a comeback ride.
00:56:21That was his best yet on a Ducati.
00:56:23It was absolutely sensational,
00:56:25but what a race for Jorge Martín
00:56:27to just get four points from that.
00:56:29That was a lot of work, wasn't it?
00:56:31I tell you what, when you have to battle Marc for the victory
00:56:33and you see Marc taking your way to turn four,
00:56:35there's a lot hanging in the balance.
00:56:37He was prepared to hang it all out and go against Marc.
00:56:39Today, Marc just had a bit more,
00:56:40but Jorge, he risked it all
00:56:43to gain four points out of a race like that.
00:56:45He will be slightly disappointed,
00:56:46but he's got a nice little cushion again.
00:56:48Up to 20 points, he'd have wanted 25 tonight.
00:56:50That's why he was prepared to fight back.
00:56:52Instinct kicked in, he went for it today
00:56:54and he just didn't have enough in the locker.
00:56:55Marc around left-handers is a bit special.
00:56:58I was going to ask you next, what's the situation here?
00:57:00We've got the old guy on the old bike
00:57:03beating the championship runner on the newer bike.
00:57:06How much of it is Marc?
00:57:08Most of it. The reality is, though,
00:57:11Martín and Peko say that the old bike, the GP23,
00:57:14has a little bit more initial grip.
00:57:15You can see Marc able to extract the grip
00:57:17out of the Michelin mid-corner, making it turn.
00:57:19So he's got a little advantage in his pocket with the GP23.
00:57:22It may not have the acceleration or top end to match the GP24,
00:57:26but he used the tools, he used that extra bit of traction
00:57:29to get it round there, to make the difference.
00:57:31But it is Marc.
00:57:32It is the fact that he's 12 seconds ahead of the next GP23,
00:57:35that's the man making the difference. Chapeau.
00:57:37Yeah, and you know, where people question
00:57:39the decision that Ducati made,
00:57:41you can have a look at that race and say,
00:57:42well, there's some justification in there.
00:57:44Marc has just said that he had a fly on the...
00:57:47you know, on his tear-off, and that's why he took it off,
00:57:50because you want a clean sight down into Doohans, don't you?
00:57:53Yeah, and it's the one time you'll really notice it,
00:57:55you line up on the grid.
00:57:56So normally, if there's a fly, as you pull up on the grid,
00:57:59you'll pull the tear-off, so it's behind the grid.
00:58:01But unfortunately, he was activating his lowering device
00:58:03on the front end of the machine at that time,
00:58:05rolled up to his spot, wanted to dispose of the fly,
00:58:07and took the tear-off off,
00:58:09and unfortunately, the wind blew it under his bike,
00:58:11and that's it, he's done for.
00:58:12So, yeah, you're trying to unleash 300 brake horsepower
00:58:15across a slippy plastic film.
00:58:17It's going to light up, and he controlled it so well,
00:58:20rolled the throttle, got swallowed up
00:58:21to about 12th or 14th entering Turn 1,
00:58:24and somehow he was 6th at the end of the first lap.
00:58:26That was his race-winning move there,
00:58:29not them passing Jorge Martín,
00:58:30somehow recovering through Turns 1 and 2,
00:58:33and running down through the stoner corner,
00:58:34he was already alongside Inea Bastionini.
00:58:37That's funny watching that.
00:58:38Jorge can't watch the last bit.
00:58:39He's like, yep, okay, fine, I've been beaten,
00:58:41and I don't want to need to see it again.
00:58:43But let's just pause, really,
00:58:44and think about what we have just witnessed there
00:58:47with what Mark did.
00:58:48I mean, that was just incredible.
00:58:51As a wreck, we always get drama around Filipe.
00:58:53No one could have predicted that.
00:58:55We call this a racer's racetrack.
00:58:57Juan Marquez is the ultimate racer.
00:58:59He came out on top today against two of the fastest runners
00:59:02we've ever seen.
00:59:04Major excitement behind us.
00:59:06So let's go and enjoy this podium
00:59:08with all these Aussies, Gav.
00:59:10They've all piled down for the track invasion,
00:59:13as they always do under the podium here.
00:59:16Giacomo Agostini's behind the podium.
00:59:18He's going to hand out one of the trophies
00:59:20as Pega Bagnaio and Jorge Martín make their way up.
00:59:25To join Michele Mazzini and, of course, Mark Marquez.
00:59:28A huge cheer from the Australian crowd.
00:59:31A wild ride today, wasn't it?
00:59:34Mark Marquez proving he is king of the MotoGP jungle once more.
00:59:40As he takes his position on the top step of the podium.
00:59:46Michele Mazzini takes the trophy from the sponsors.
00:59:50He points to this guy in memory of Fausto Gassini.
00:59:54It's Giacomo Agostini.
00:59:55He's done his own laps around here this weekend.
00:59:58And one Italian world champion to another.
01:00:01Pega Bagnaio third today, but you can see he's not happy.
01:00:04They have work to do to get it rolling at Thailand.
01:00:07Remember, that's coming up in just seven days' time.
01:00:11Jorge Martín had to settle for second in the end.
01:00:16Had a few of his own issues.
01:00:18But nonetheless, extends his championship lead to 20 points
01:00:21with three rounds remaining.
01:00:22But no doubt about who deserves the Claudettes today.
01:00:25Mark Marquez got a shocking start in the race.
01:00:29But he has proved once more why he's one of the greats.
01:00:32Another victory.
01:00:33He's 62nd in MotoGP, 88th Grand Prix win.
01:00:38To what is already a legendary career.

01:01:35We've had seagulls, hares, geese and a cat and a mouse on track
01:01:40with Mark Marquez making his pound.
01:01:42Sorge Martin was defensive but it wasn't enough to stop the ant
01:01:47from Cervés.
01:01:48There he is, spraying and enjoying the fantastic celebrations
01:01:52here in Phillip Island.
01:01:54And it's the last race weekend for the World Superbikes
01:01:58as well in Jerez.
01:02:00And Matt Roberts is there.
01:02:04Thanks, Susie.
01:02:05What an incredible day we had at Jerez here yesterday.
01:02:07Two World Champions crowned.
01:02:08Adrian Huertas in World Supersport.
01:02:11And the absolutely brilliant top rat, Razzgatiooglu,
01:02:14winning the title for the first time for BMW,
01:02:17the second time for him, of course, and for Turkey as well.
01:02:19Today, two more titles on the line
01:02:21in the Women's World Championship
01:02:23and in the World Supersport 300s as well.
01:02:25We'll be on air from 9.30.
01:02:30Yes, so big news then over in Jerez.
01:02:33Good to see Matt there.
01:02:34But what about the scenes here in Phillip Island?
01:02:37Absolutely superb.
01:02:39Sundrenched, you can't say that very often,
01:02:41and a box office race to boot.
01:02:44Well, we're going to take a break now.
01:02:46And don't forget, when we come back,
01:02:48we will have chequered flags.
01:02:50So don't go anywhere.
01:02:52We'll just take our breath.
