Olympians, national sports teams, and leading organisations celebrate NSPCC sports safeguarding campaign
Transcript
00:00I'm here today to promote Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week. British Cycling and the
00:11NSPCC share very common values around making sure that parents understand their responsibilities
00:18when it comes to safeguarding their children in sport. It's really important that we promote
00:21that. I'm here today to host this Keeping Children
00:25Safe in Sport Week event. It's really important that children enjoy the experience of sport
00:31when they're growing up. It makes such a positive difference to young lives. But there are times
00:37when children can feel anxious, worried, concerned. We've heard some horrific examples today about
00:44where predators have used sport to take advantage of vulnerable young people.
00:48I really want to raise the profile and try and help and keep children safe within sport.
00:54So any time that I can speak about and raise awareness of the issues of abuse within sport,
00:59I'd love to do so. Working with families, working with the stakeholders,
01:05to me it's really pivotal that we continue to support the cause.
01:11Sport is very tough, there's many highs and lows, but unfortunately we do know that abuse
01:14happens. So we're here today to share some stories and hopefully just work together to
01:19see what we can do moving forward in the future. The key points that stuck out to me today
01:24was the importance of parents talking to their children about what's right and wrong within
01:30a sporting environment. British Cycling works really closely with the NSPCC and in particular
01:34the Child Protection Support Unit. We're always looking to strive to do better and it's really
01:40important that we keep up the standards for the NSPCC and actually go beyond that as well.
