00:00All right, what's up? MKBHD here in the new Krispy shirt, and well, today was Apple's
00:08new October fall event, the new iPhone event, whatever you want to call it.
00:12But of course, since it's 2020, it was a virtual event.
00:15Nobody actually went down to Apple headquarters to see the new iPhones.
00:19Instead, we got the pre-recorded Apple announcement video.
00:22So that means instead of the event ending and then everybody going over to the hands-on
00:25area to check out and play with the new stuff, that's obviously not happening right now.
00:30But I still have a lot of thoughts and reactions to what they just showed, what they just unveiled.
00:36So this video is sort of everything you need to know and my honest take on it.
00:41So it's really two new things, HomePod mini and the new iPhones.
00:45But let's do HomePod mini first.
00:47So you may or may not remember when I reviewed the original HomePod, Apple's smart speaker
00:51back when it came out in 2018, I called it the dumbest smart speaker, mainly because
00:56it's just Siri powering this thing and there's no screen and it was pretty rough.
01:01HomePod mini, which is new, is 99 bucks and it's basically a much smaller version of
01:06the HomePod again.
01:08So meaning no display, just the glowing set of volume controls and the touch pad up at
01:12the top.
01:13And it will still focus very heavily on audio quality and just being a good speaker.
01:18So there's an S5 chip inside specifically for computational audio.
01:21So it's listening to where it is in your environment and sounding as best as it can.
01:24It still has forced cancelling woofers, still has a bunch of tweeters and all that stuff.
01:28It's just way smaller now, but you know, sound quality is one of those things where you got
01:32to hear it.
01:33I got to actually hear it to believe it.
01:35So the HomePod was a pretty good sounding speaker.
01:38I just, I got to get the actual HomePod mini in the studio to test that for myself.
01:43But other than that, yeah, it's a, it's a smart speaker still powered by Siri.
01:46There's also an ultra wide band chip in there for a better direct control from an iPhone.
01:51And there's also this kind of cool intercom feature.
01:53So if you have a family of people using connected Apple devices, they can all hear your intercom
01:58message on the HomePod.
01:59And also there was a note in there about Siri knows like 20 times more facts.
02:04I think that's what they said, which great, I guess, but you know, it's, I've been using
02:10Siri.
02:11It's, it's still Siri, but anyway, yeah, HomePod mini 99 bucks, which kind of sits in there.
02:17It's cheaper of course than the regular HomePod, but in this world of all the other smart speakers
02:21where you got Google home, smart speakers, you've got the Alexa smart speakers and all
02:25shapes and sizes.
02:26Some of them have screens, some of them have clocks.
02:29It's like you got to really want Siri or that ecosystem plugin to pick the HomePod over
02:35those.
02:36So, okay.
02:37Then we got to the new iPhones.
02:39So iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 pro and iPhone 12 pro max, so four new iPhones.
02:50And there's a lot of really cool stuff in here.
02:51I got to be honest.
02:52I like a lot of what they showed.
02:53In fact, I think a lot of iPhone 12 is so good that it makes the 12 pro a little bit
03:00less like a convincing buy for me.
03:03Maybe let me know if you feel the same way, but really, first of all, the big overarching
03:06headliner feature for all these new iPhones is 5g.
03:09They all have it.
03:10They spent what felt like a million years talking about it and they went over the faster
03:14data speeds, the higher capacity, how it's the future.
03:18They had Verizon come up on stage to say all this great stuff about it.
03:21So here's what I'll say about 5g.
03:25It's a two-sided thing.
03:28Right now, not really ready yet.
03:30Most people don't have 5g coverage, whether it's the device they're on or the network
03:34they're on.
03:35It's just not out there yet.
03:36I did a whole video on 5g explained about why it's not out there.
03:39First link below the like button if you want to check it out.
03:40But the bottom line is you probably don't have 5g yet.
03:43The coverage isn't really there.
03:44The infrastructure just isn't really built yet.
03:46So you're not really buying a phone right now because it has 5g, but people keep iPhones
03:54for probably the longest amount of time of any new phone.
03:57So people are going to have this new iPhone in three, four, five years.
04:01And in five years, there's a better chance that 5g will be more built out and maybe you'd
04:06regret not having 5g in five years.
04:09So it's a good thing that all the new iPhones have 5g so you don't have to pick the one
04:13that does or doesn't have it.
04:15They all have 5g.
04:17Okay, first up, iPhone 12.
04:18And the new design to me is pretty sweet.
04:21It's the new flat sided shape that I was waiting for, like iPad Pro.
04:25It's got the aluminum frame all the way around, flat screen, and of course, some new antenna
04:30action positioning it well for 5g.
04:32There's IP 68 water resistance.
04:35And there's a new ceramic shield specialized glass on the front.
04:40Ceramic shield.
04:41It's an interesting branding of a new glass feature.
04:44So Apple didn't even really want to call it glass.
04:46It's a new composite material with crystallization and they didn't actually call it glass at
04:52any point on stage.
04:53But what you should know is it's offering four times better drop protection.
04:59That's the main headlining feature.
05:00Now, of course, there's going to be people going out and testing this.
05:04It's hard to quantify what is four times better.
05:06Do you drop it and it breaks a quarter of the time that it usually would?
05:10I don't really know.
05:12I'm just hoping it translates to better scratch protection, but I think they're talking about
05:15shatter resistance.
05:16Either way, there's going to be drop tests on YouTube in a couple of weeks.
05:20Hopefully it's stronger glass.
05:21So the three big new things they talked about on the iPhone 12 phone itself are the screen,
05:27charging and the cameras.
05:29So the screen is now much better.
05:31It goes from that 720p LCD screen we all kind of like talking about on iPhone 11 to now
05:37it's a 6.1 inch 1080p OLED display with thinner bezels.
05:43It's a significantly better screen than on iPhone 11.
05:45And of course, I'm happy to see this better brightness, much more contrast in an OLED,
05:49better pixel density, the whole thing.
05:52The notch doesn't go away as you can tell, obviously, but that might be the only downside.
05:56It's a HDR 10 certified.
05:57It's flat right up to the edges.
05:59The whole thing is nice.
06:01The new cameras are also pretty nice.
06:03It's a new dual 12 megapixel camera system.
06:05So they didn't change the numbers here, but it is a new ultra wide and a new standard
06:10camera with an F 1.6 aperture.
06:13And that should make for better low light and portrait shot performance.
06:16But you know, most of the smartphone camera improvements that you get in 2020 nowadays
06:21are with software.
06:22And so you're going to see stuff like that with their new smart HDR 3 with night mode
06:26coming to the front facing camera.
06:28That's pretty sweet.
06:29So all the stuff combined should make a better camera system in iPhone 12.
06:32But I'm definitely going to have to be testing that for the full review as well.
06:35So then when I say new charging, I don't mean USB-C, which would have been nice.
06:41But what I do mean is the new magnets built into the back of the phone because MagSafe
06:47is back.
06:50This to me, this is the coolest new thing in the iPhone to be totally honest.
06:55I guess I'm so used to it.
06:57So you know how there's an Apple Watch charger where you just connect it with magnets, it
07:01lines it up, slap it on, charges the watch.
07:04Well now there's going to be a MagSafe big wireless charger that slaps on the back of
07:08the phone, helps you align it perfectly every time and charges the phone.
07:12It's not wireless.
07:13It's still a wire.
07:14But like now you maybe, maybe you can kind of still use the phone while it's charging
07:19that way.
07:20This is, this is the part where it would be nice to have a hands on because then I can
07:24see like how strong the magnets really are and if they really firmly connect to the back
07:27of the phone and all that stuff.
07:29But I don't know.
07:30I think MagSafe being back is sweet.
07:31I checked the Apple store.
07:32It's already up actually 39 bucks for the iPhone 12 MagSafe charger.
07:37Not insane, but not cheap obviously.
07:40But it's at least it's not a hundred bucks or something stupid.
07:42It'll charge at 15 watts.
07:44So a normal 2020 wireless charging speed, nothing too crazy.
07:48So I'm into that.
07:49But not just for the charging part, but also for the entire ecosystem of MagSafe accessories
07:54that are born from this magnet.
07:56And a lot of these are also already up in the Apple store.
07:59You know, there's now this little wallet that magnetizes to the back of the phone
08:02now.
08:03There's some MagSafe cases and MagSafe is stackable.
08:06So it'll charge through the case to a lot of cool stuff, just snap it onto the back
08:10of the phone.
08:11And I imagine there will be way more third party MagSafe accessories that come out as
08:15soon as this phone drops, which could be cool for other chargers and other cases and things
08:20like that.
08:21Other accessories for the iPhone.
08:22Uh, yeah, there's going to be a lot of stuff snapping on the back of the iPhone.
08:27So it's probably going to get a lot of people really used to snapping things on the back
08:30of the iPhone and not wanting to plug in anymore.
08:34Hot take, next iPhone won't have a plug because everyone's going to be so used to snapping
08:40it on the, on the back.
08:42It's not a good take.
08:43It's just a hot take.
08:44Also, speaking of charging, there is officially now no charging brick in any of the iPhone
08:50boxes starting with iPhone 12, which again, sounds crazy, but we also called it.
08:56There's a whole video again that I did, I'll link below just about this.
08:59And I kind of called it pretty much exactly the way they did it in this event.
09:02They talked about it in the environmental section of the keynote, you know, all the
09:05environmental e-waste savings and all that stuff.
09:08They showed us a new smaller iPhone box, which saves space and shipping.
09:12Now that volume is smaller, that's more efficient.
09:15You can watch that whole video below if you want to see a more in-depth analysis or ranting
09:19on, on what that means for the iPhone's box and the rest of the industry.
09:23But yeah, iPhone now will just come with the phone itself and a single USB-C to lightning
09:28cable and the paperwork and that's it.
09:31There's of course all the new usual year over year iPhone improvements here with iPhone
09:3512.
09:36There's new colors, blue, red, black, white, and green.
09:40I'm personally feeling that blue and the red since phones are still pretty shiny here from
09:44what I can tell.
09:45And there's a new chip as well, A14 bionic, which is the first five nanometer chip in
09:50any phone, six core CPU, four core GPU, better machine learning performance and image processing,
09:56et cetera, et cetera.
09:57This is no surprise.
09:58Apple has been really good at chips, not to take anything for granted, but yeah, this
10:02is going to be a pretty fast phone for a long time.
10:05So that's iPhone 12, right?
10:07That phone is going to be $799.
10:10And then real quick, they also dramatically unveiled a smaller iPhone 12 mini.
10:18And it comes out like a month later in the year, but basically the iPhone 12 mini is
10:22just a smaller version of everything we just saw that's new in the iPhone 12, MagSafe,
10:27new colors, all that stuff, but just smaller in a 5.4 inch display.
10:31And that phone, iPhone 12 mini is going to be $699.
10:36So the price of the standard iPhone did just go up technically, but they brought in, so
10:42they made a new mini version to fill in that price gap and they still have the SE.
10:46So they still have a whole lineup of phones ranging from a bunch of different prices,
10:49but I'm very curious about this mini and getting my hands on it and just how small
10:53it'll feel in the hand.
10:54And if there's any reason to get it over the regular 12.
10:57But of course that leads us to the big dogs you see here, iPhone 12 pro and iPhone 12
11:02pro max.
11:03Now there's actually not that much, in my opinion, different about the pros this year
11:08versus the 12.
11:10So the prices are still the same, $999 and $1099, both starting at 128 gigs, but the
11:15main, more subtle differences here are the size, the colors and the cameras.
11:21So not a drastic stuff, but that's what's new.
11:24So again, it packs all the good stuff from the 12 that we just talked about, IP68 water
11:28resistance, the ceramic shield, the A14 bionic, the MagSafe magnets.
11:33And now it's just in a body with slightly larger displays than the last year, 6.1 inch
11:38and 6.7 inch OLEDs.
11:41And you're getting flat stainless steel sides now instead of aluminum, which is incredibly
11:45shiny.
11:46And the new colors here are white, black, blue and gold.
11:50And I swear to you that gold looks, I guess I'd say better than anything the Escobar brand
11:55could have cooked up.
11:56So well done Apple.
11:57It's a flashy phone.
11:58And then basically if you're looking for the real reason to buy the pros, look no further
12:01than those camera modules.
12:03That's where the big new stuff is.
12:04So it's still triple cameras, but it's an all new hardware stack.
12:07So a new standard and ultra wide and telephoto camera, both the pros have deep fusion on
12:12all four cameras, including the front facing camera.
12:15And you also now do get that LIDAR sensor back there, which we first saw in the iPad
12:19pro earlier this year.
12:21And it should help with not just better and more accurate AR, but also improved autofocus
12:27in the dark, which is sweet.
12:28Honestly, LIDAR to me seems more useful more often on an iPhone where you take a lot of
12:32photos in low light than an iPad.
12:35So it's kind of funny that we got it on the iPad first, but LIDAR is on the iPhone now.
12:39Now there's also this new pro raw image format that they talked briefly about and it looked
12:45really cool.
12:46But then when you look up the specs of the iPhone on their site, it says coming soon,
12:50which is what they said about deep fusion for months before it actually came out.
12:54So I'm going to hold my judgment on this pro raw image format until it is actually out.
13:01And then curiously, slightly different cameras on the 12 pro and 12 pro max.
13:08So 2.5x telephoto on the 12 pro max and 2x telephoto on the 12 pro.
13:18Slight difference there.
13:19It's not like 100x zoom or anything crazy, but that is different.
13:22And then the 12 pro max has a better sensor shift optical image stabilization while all
13:28the others have it built into the lens like it always has been.
13:31So really the max has all the highest end features.
13:34And then probably their biggest flex in the camera module of them all was the pros 10
13:39bit Dolby vision HDR 4k 60fps video.
13:44Just insane.
13:46It's the only camera in the world that'll shoot Dolby vision when it comes out.
13:49And again, having a new standard like this, where this is the only camera in the world
13:53that'll do it doesn't really lend itself to any reputation for that standard.
13:57So if it's a good camera, we'll all think good things about Dolby vision, but yeah,
14:02I don't know how good that's going to be yet, but I'm excited to actually see it.
14:05And so that is basically it for what's new with the pros.
14:09Now you might've noticed there's one thing missing, at least one thing I was kind of
14:14hoping for, which is promotion, high refresh rate, 120 Hertz.
14:19That is not in these new iPhones.
14:22It's not in the iPhone 12 pro or 12 pro max.
14:25Now, uh, if you're, if you're defending Apple, of course you're saying, Oh, whatever.
14:29It's not a big deal.
14:31The average person wasn't really going to notice that, which I guess, okay, fine.
14:35You're technically, you're right.
14:36If you're just going to defend them no matter what, then yes, they, they made the right
14:39choice.
14:40No one was going to notice that.
14:41Um, but also Apple is notorious for doing that extra next level of stuff that the average
14:47person probably won't notice like 10 bit 4k 60fps Dolby vision HDR video and all kinds
14:55of stuff like the calibration in their displays.
14:57So I'm also a little bummed that they don't have promotion here because to me, the person
15:03with a thousand dollars to spend on a phone and I want to really be convinced by this
15:07phone over, you know, another Android phone I could buy, uh, to that specific customer
15:13who's going to appreciate 10 bit 4k HDR, uh, I would appreciate high refresh rate too.
15:19But whatever the reason is, whether it's the yields not being high enough for that display
15:22quality or they just couldn't get them in that volume at all, whatever the reason it's
15:27not here, fingers crossed, maybe for next year, then a couple of other small notes.
15:31Uh, we see those, uh, notches still on all the new iPhones.
15:35They appear to all be the same size and shape as before they didn't mention face ID once
15:40on stage.
15:41So I'm just going to go ahead and assume there are no improvements to face ID, same sensors
15:45up there.
15:46Uh, yeah, same face ID.
15:47And for 5g, they talked about a smart data mode on the iPhone, which intelligently only
15:52uses the 5g radios when they're needed, which to me kind of sounds a little bit like we
15:58only have high refresh rate on the iPad pro when it's needed, meaning not all the time,
16:06but I'm super curious when they turn on 5g and when they don't, will it be off most of
16:11the time to save battery 5g is a big battery hit, very interested in testing the iPhone
16:16and seeing when that turns on.
16:17And then, yes, that mysterious little rectangular cutout on the side of the iPhones that we've
16:21seen all the way from the models all the way to the renders in the keynote.
16:25That is the 5g antenna cutout, four millimeter wave officially.
16:29So that's it.
16:30I don't really have any other impressions of like the, the materials and the new sizes
16:34and how big the mini is versus the max and the colors and all that stuff, cause we don't
16:38have them.
16:39So that'll be a separate video when we actually do get them here in the studio and I can check
16:43them out and deliver that to you guys.
16:45So make sure you subscribe to be among the first to see it when it does come out, but
16:49let me know what you think, which one of these four new iPhones speaks to you the most.
16:54I'm kind of probably still going to go for the max anyway, either way.
16:58Thanks for watching.
16:59Enjoy the rest of techtober.
17:00A lot more videos coming up soon.
17:03See you guys later.
17:04So big shout out to expressvpn for sponsoring this video.
17:07So have you ever gone to search for a show on Netflix and seen this see Netflix probably
17:11has a show you want.
17:12It's just restricted.
17:13Depending on where you live, Netflix and other services have different content for
17:17different places.
17:18So you're paying a full subscription, but you're only getting access to technically
17:22a fraction of the total shows and movies they have.
17:26But with expressvpn, I can just change my location to anywhere in the world and basically
17:30unlock thousands of movies and TV shows.
17:33So if you go and look online, it tells me exactly which country to connect to, to be
17:37able to watch certain things.
17:39So if the dark night's not on Netflix, boom, now I'm in Canada.
17:42Now I can watch it.
17:43Maybe I want to watch inception just like that.
17:46Now I'm in the UK watching it.
17:48So I've watched movies I didn't even realize I didn't have access to.
17:51And on top of all that, expressvpn is super fast with never any buffering or reduced quality.
17:56So yeah, expressvpn, it's one of those things I genuinely use all the time.
18:00It keeps my data protected and gives me full access to all these subscription services
18:05that I pay for.
18:06So if you want to give it a shot yourself, which you probably do, you can get three months
18:09for free by visiting expressvpn.com slash MKBHD.
18:13Thanks again to expressvpn for sponsoring this video.
18:16Thanks for watching.
18:17Catch you guys in the next one.
18:19Peace.
