00:00Hey what's up, MKBHD here.
00:05Okay, finally, a month after it was announced at that September event, the new iPad Air
00:11is finally here.
00:12And it turns out, if anything out there is actually an iPad Pro killer, it's this.
00:19I mean, I've talked at length about how the iPad Pro is my favorite tablet by a mile,
00:24right?
00:25You've seen the videos.
00:26I've talked about how other tablets might be better at the iPad Pro at like one thing,
00:30like maybe a better overall display or a better speaker setup.
00:34But overall, the whole package for best tablet, for me, keeps going to iPad Pro.
00:40But the thing is, most people don't need an iPad Pro.
00:44And that thing still starts at 800 bucks.
00:46But now with all the updates to this fourth gen iPad Air, there's almost no reason for
00:50people to go spend that because this thing starts at $599 and it gets pretty much everything
00:57most people care about from the iPad Pro.
01:01Except one thing.
01:02So the new design of the iPad Air matches the iPad Pro in basically every way.
01:06The boxy all-aluminum shape feels rock solid.
01:09It's got these grippable flat sides.
01:11The buttons are in the same place.
01:13It's nice.
01:14It has the smart connector at the back so you can drop it in a smart folio or even a
01:18Magic Keyboard case just like an iPad Pro.
01:21You wanna know why?
01:22Because it is the Magic Keyboard case for the iPad Pro and it just fits in the same
01:27case because it has the same dimensions.
01:30So there's your trackpad, there's your USB-C passthrough, because guess what?
01:34iPad Air also now gets USB Type-C.
01:38See Apple?
01:39It's okay to put USB-C in products without the Pro in the name.
01:41It's good for everybody.
01:43The quad speaker setup that surrounds the display also sounds phenomenal for a tablet
01:47and you have basically the exact same bezel thickness all the way around.
01:51Thin enough to not be a problem and still look good but thick enough to actually hold
01:56the iPad from any angle and not have accidental screen touches.
01:59But then one difference about that bezel is inside it you won't find Face ID.
02:03There's just a regular 7 megapixel front-facing camera up there and instead of Face ID, Touch
02:08ID is back and it's built into that power button up top.
02:13So kind of like Pixel 5, they've technically gone backwards as far as biometric authentication
02:19methods goes.
02:20But in this world of masks that we live in, a fingerprint reader is just as convenient
02:24as Face ID.
02:25Sometimes more so.
02:26Although with an iPad, you use it at home a lot where you're not really out and wearing
02:30a mask as much.
02:31So maybe the fingerprint reader is just at the same level as Face ID.
02:36Either way, not a problem.
02:37It's pretty easy and quick to get used to.
02:39Basically the pro tip is register multiple fingerprints.
02:42That's not even a pro tip.
02:43That's just common sense.
02:44But a lot of people don't do it.
02:46But for me, both index fingers work great.
02:48So no matter which orientation the iPad is in, the finger I press the power button with
02:53also unlocks it for me.
02:55So that's great.
02:56And Apple's done fingerprint reader as well for a while now.
02:58This one is also fast and accurate.
03:00The only little bit of friction I had personally was I'm so used to iPad Pro that my unlock
03:06is typically touch to wake and then swipe up and it reads my face.
03:09But of course, I have to remember on this to touch the power button, which is such a
03:14minor thing.
03:15But also most people getting iPad Air aren't coming from an iPad Pro.
03:20So this is a total non-issue.
03:21From the back, iPad Air literally gets the same 12 megapixel primary camera as the iPad
03:26Pro.
03:27But you'll note it's just a single camera by itself and a mic, no flash, no ultra wide,
03:34no LiDAR.
03:35But I mean, if you think about it, how often do you need an ultra wide or a LiDAR sensor
03:40or even a flash for your tablet photography?
03:43I'd say pretty much never.
03:44So all of these things missing mean almost nothing to most people.
03:48I maintain that the most common use of iPad cameras should be document scanning and FaceTime
03:53calls.
03:55And these cameras here are more than good enough for that.
03:57And then the iPad Air has the new Apple Pencil support.
04:00It snaps onto the side of the iPad to charge and pair the same way as the Pro.
04:04So that's pretty sweet.
04:05And then inside, iPad Air actually has the even newer 5 nanometer A14 Bionic chip instead
04:12of the A12Z currently in the Pro.
04:14So you can actually expect very similar, sometimes even better benchmark numbers on paper.
04:19But the point is, despite its slightly lower 4 gigs of RAM, it's going to perform great.
04:24I've had no performance issues and I don't expect the typical user will run into any
04:27performance limits for a long time.
04:30So on the surface level, everything iPad Pro does, iPad Air basically also does, except
04:38refresh rate.
04:39So iPad Air is of course at the standard 60 hertz that we're used to on every other
04:43Apple device, except the ones with ProMotion like iPad Pro, which are at 120 hertz.
04:49Now if you've never seen 120 hertz, which if we're being honest, most Apple users never
04:55have, then 60 hertz is going to look great.
04:58But it's like every time I review an iPad, I always can't help but have these thoughts
05:01on like the state of tablets in general and how the entire Android tablet ecosystem rose
05:07to such great heights and then fell so far.
05:10Like there used to be so much conjecture and thoughts and interesting videos about what
05:14the tablet OS should look like and how it should multitask and what it should do.
05:20But now with like four out of the top five tablets available being iPads, they're all
05:25kind of just the same.
05:26Performance is fine as expected through iPad OS 14.
05:30There's plenty of iPad optimized apps and games, which is great.
05:34And it's just kind of the status quo now.
05:36The iPad Pro's 120 hertz of course speaks to people like me because I'm personally a
05:40fan of high refresh rate.
05:42The more pixels the better.
05:44But I've always said in the past, and it's still true here, Apple also makes some of
05:48the smoothest 60 hertz devices.
05:50And smoothness of course is not a problem at all here.
05:53It's standard.
05:54And actually battery life is also potentially even better on this iPad Air because it never
05:59has to hit 120 hertz.
06:00It's just chilling at 60 and it's using the more efficient 5 nanometer A14 chip.
06:05Also it happens to come with a slightly faster 20 watt fast charger in the box instead of
06:09the old 18 that comes with the iPad Pro.
06:11So okay, I've done a lot of comparing in this video.
06:14So I'm just going to go ahead and name every single significant thing that you could notice
06:19as a difference between iPad Pro and iPad Air.
06:24And I'm not going to get into the extra 2 gigs of RAM on the Pro or the slightly higher
06:28peak brightness.
06:29I'm going to stick to the main real bullet points of why you'd pick one or the other.
06:33So you should pick the iPad Pro over the Air if you want the ultra wide camera or LiDAR,
06:40if you want high refresh rate, 120 hertz ProMotion, or a bigger iPad.
06:46Because the bigger 13 inch iPad Pro is available, the iPad Air only comes in the 11 inch size
06:51or 10.9 inch.
06:53But that's it.
06:54For everyone else, you should get the iPad Air.
06:57It's all the tablet you need for way less money.
07:01That almost seems too simple.
07:02Are there any downsides?
07:03Yes, but they're small.
07:05Obviously no bigger size is a bit of a downside for some people.
07:08Like I mentioned, there's only 10.9.
07:11But also I'm not a fan of these colors at all.
07:14They're all super pale pastel-ish kind of colors.
07:18But I mean, this green only shows up on camera as green because I've made a conscious effort
07:22through this video to put it up against things that don't overwhelm the green.
07:26It really isn't green most of the time.
07:28So I'd just get space gray.
07:30This new iPad to me more represents Apple's more interesting strategy of attacking a wider
07:35range of prices and offering more things at more prices.
07:39We saw it with the iPhone, anywhere from $399 at the SE all the way up to $1299 at the
07:4412 Pro Max.
07:46And now we see it with the iPad, with the $329 iPad straight all the way up to $1499
07:52for the one terabyte, 13 inch iPad Pro with cellular.
07:56So this new iPad takes a lot of great stuff from the Pro, brings it down in price.
08:00And that's why you could call it an iPad Pro killer, but really it's just living alongside
08:03it for a lot of people.
08:06That's pretty much it.
08:07Let me know which one you would pick.
08:08Are you a promotion type of person like me?
08:11Would you go for the iPad Pro?
08:13Or are you one of those iPad Air people?
08:15Because there's about to be a lot of them.
08:16Either way, thanks for watching.
08:19Catch you guys in the next one.
08:20Peace.
