00:00On it, on it, on it, on it
00:02Yeah, yeah
00:03On it, on it, on it, on it
00:13Hey, what's up? MKBHD here.
00:15So, hear me out.
00:17PS5's controller, this guy right here,
00:20might be the best part of the PS5,
00:23but maybe an even hotter take is this
00:25might be the most next-gen thing
00:27about any of the upcoming next-gen consoles.
00:32It's important.
00:33Like, of course, the graphics are getting better,
00:35and the games will look better,
00:36but the controller evolving,
00:38maybe that's a hot take,
00:39but I think this is pretty important.
00:41So, both major consoles,
00:42Xbox Series and PlayStation 5,
00:45right around the corner, as you know,
00:47and I'm testing them both.
00:48It's a lot of hard work,
00:50playing a lot of games between the two of them, of course.
00:52But I wanted to take a minute before the reviews of them
00:54to talk about controllers.
00:56So, a lot of you have seen the PS5 unboxing,
00:58so you've seen that new controller,
01:00and this is it.
01:01And I didn't unbox the Xbox Series X and S on camera,
01:04but I've shown it several times already,
01:06and these are the Xbox controllers.
01:08The Series X comes with a black controller,
01:10matte black everything, actually,
01:11and the Series S comes with a matte white controller.
01:14But it's the same thing, roughly.
01:15It's not super new,
01:16and we've seen the shape before.
01:18There's some subtle improvements I like, though.
01:20USB Type-C,
01:21and there's a dot pattern on the back of the shoulders
01:23that's really nice now.
01:24But the PS5's new controller is different.
01:27It's built different.
01:29I don't know how many people are actually shopping
01:31between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
01:34Like, to be honest,
01:35I think most people already know which one they want,
01:37and they're just seeing how they can get their hands on them,
01:39pre-orders, that whole dance.
01:41But if you are still undecided,
01:43maybe the controller is that differentiating factor.
01:45So, okay, why am I making this whole video?
01:47Why is the controller so different?
01:49Well, I already showed you the fundamental new thing,
01:51the new beefier design,
01:52the new lights,
01:53the new USB Type-C,
01:54and the pins at the bottom for the dock,
01:56and even that crazy detailed texture.
01:58That's all fine.
02:00But also, this controller, when it turns on,
02:02has a feel
02:04that makes you feel more connected to the game
02:07and the console.
02:08I mean, it's a controller,
02:09so it's the one thing that you can actually say,
02:11maybe more than the screen,
02:12actually connects you to the game.
02:14So, two things about it.
02:15First, the new haptics are very strong.
02:18There's a new haptic motor inside this.
02:21Think like the difference between a new phone,
02:24the newest iPhone's haptic motor,
02:26and like an old, sloppy, traditional vibration motor.
02:30That precision to it.
02:32And then the other thing is the adaptive triggers.
02:34So, I mentioned in the unboxing,
02:36when you just kind of squeeze the triggers
02:37when the controller is off,
02:38they feel normal.
02:39But when the controller is on,
02:40they have an adaptive level of resistance
02:43of when you actually pull them down.
02:45And the level of resistance can get pretty high,
02:47and you really have to squeeze the triggers
02:50and they respond based on what's happening
02:52on the screen and in the game.
02:54So, those two things are a feel
02:57that is a major step up.
02:58So, together, they make up the DualSense controller.
03:01And then, to demo it,
03:02Sony actually made a game,
03:04it's called Astro's Playroom,
03:05to show it off.
03:06And it has exaggerated levels of haptics
03:09and adaptive triggers all throughout the game.
03:11And they combine with the speaker and the controller
03:14to really feel super engaging all the time.
03:18I was gonna say immersive.
03:19I don't know if that's the right word,
03:20but it's just engaging the whole time.
03:22So, in this game,
03:23you basically control Astro
03:24and go through this world.
03:25This is one stage called Cooling Springs,
03:27and literally everything you touch
03:29feels different through the controller.
03:32The character walking around on glass,
03:34you feel the footsteps.
03:35It feels and sounds one way,
03:37but even without the sound,
03:38it just feels noticeably different
03:40than walking on metal,
03:42or walking through water,
03:44or on sand.
03:45And that feel is all translated
03:47by the haptic motor
03:48that moves the controller
03:50with every footstep really precisely.
03:52It's pretty great.
03:53With hitting things,
03:54the impact is different
03:55for different materials.
03:56So, of course,
03:57there's gonna be a lot of different things
03:58to hit all over this game constantly
04:00to feel all that happen.
04:01Coins hitting you
04:02feels different from hitting a leaf,
04:04feels different from hitting an enemy.
04:06And then for the adaptive triggers,
04:08they tie it to this feeling
04:10of a spring in the game.
04:12So you're using the triggers
04:13on the back of the controller
04:14to squeeze down a spring.
04:16And the added resistance
04:18plus the haptic vibration
04:20all kind of feel exactly
04:22how it would feel
04:23if you were trying to squeeze
04:24and compress a real-life spring.
04:26It is a very convincing combination
04:28of haptics.
04:29And they use this feeling
04:30for other things, too,
04:31like the stretching of rope
04:32when you pull on ropes in the game,
04:34which, again, happens a lot.
04:36But, yeah,
04:37it's clearly a tailor-made experience
04:39around all the strengths
04:40of the new controller.
04:41So, of course,
04:42there's entire levels and places
04:43that are just around the feel
04:45of your environment
04:46and the haptics
04:47through the controller
04:48in your hands,
04:49but it is a really good demo.
04:50And so when I demo this
04:51and I'm using this new controller,
04:52I'm reminded of how
04:53whenever I use a new phone
04:55with a really good haptic motor,
04:56I appreciate it way more
04:58and it feels newer
04:59and more next-gen
05:00than phones from a couple years ago
05:02or even this year
05:04with bad vibration motors.
05:06They feel worse.
05:07And you never really unnotice that.
05:09It also reminds me
05:10of the MacBook Pro's trackpad,
05:12the new trackpad,
05:13where the force touch,
05:15you would swear the glass is moving,
05:17but it's not.
05:18It just has a really good,
05:19high-quality haptic motor
05:20right behind it
05:21that feels like a very convincing
05:23real click.
05:24And that's in a much smaller space
05:26than this controller
05:27where they can fit
05:28much bigger haptic motors.
05:30So there's a lot going on in here.
05:31So Sony published a teardown
05:32of the PlayStation 5
05:33and it was pretty cool
05:34and a lot of people watched it.
05:35It was very detailed.
05:36But what I want to see now
05:37is what the inside
05:39of the controller looks like.
05:40And some people are already doing that.
05:41I think Austin did a video
05:42on the internet
05:43of looking at how big
05:44these haptic motors are.
05:45So of course,
05:46I can't tear this one apart
05:47because it's a review unit,
05:48but I feel like
05:49we're going to see a lot more
05:50of that very soon.
05:51It's just when you have more space,
05:52you can do more with haptics
05:53and that, to me,
05:54feels much more next-gen
05:56and noticeable.
05:57And I also want to point you
05:58to this Dave2D video.
05:59He made a really good video
06:00just with a really good animation
06:01slash illustration
06:02of what the triggers
06:03and the motor behind them
06:05may look like,
06:06how they add resistance
06:07to the squeezing the triggers.
06:08Dave, I hope you don't mind
06:09me using this,
06:10but it's really good
06:11and I think here you can
06:12visualize now better
06:13how they use the motors
06:14to make the triggers
06:15harder to squeeze.
06:16But definitely check out,
06:17just watch Dave's
06:18entire video.
06:19I'll link it below.
06:20We share a lot
06:21of the same thoughts
06:22on this controller,
06:23but watch the rest
06:24of his entire video as well.
06:25So, better haptics,
06:26better feel
06:27in the thing
06:28you're actually holding
06:29that connects you
06:30more physically
06:31to the game
06:32than the actual graphics.
06:33When you think about it,
06:34it's kind of a no-brainer.
06:35But I think now,
06:36the question,
06:37now that we have
06:38this pretty good controller,
06:39is what other games
06:40are gonna actually
06:41take advantage of it?
06:42So, Sony built Astro's World,
06:43cool demo,
06:44but what other games
06:45are actually gonna use
06:46these impressive,
06:47you know,
06:48physical achievements
06:49inside the controller?
06:50The first thing
06:51that comes to mind for me
06:52is shooting games, right?
06:53Having the,
06:54squeezing the trigger
06:55and having the resistance
06:56of actually squeezing
06:57the trigger
06:58might feel different
06:59for different guns.
07:00That,
07:01I could definitely
07:02see happening.
07:03But then, you know,
07:04the gears start
07:05to turn a little bit.
07:06What about driving games?
07:07There's a lot of those
07:08and something
07:09you'll notice
07:10anytime you play
07:11a good driving game
07:12with a good wheel,
07:13the wheel has
07:14really high quality haptics
07:15and a vibration motor,
07:16so when you drive
07:17over different surfaces,
07:18it feels different
07:19in the wheel.
07:20The vibration of the car,
07:21you feel it in the wheel.
07:22That can be done better
07:23with better quality haptics
07:24through this controller.
07:25So, I can see that happening.
07:26But then,
07:27there's all kinds
07:28of adventure games
07:29like the Spider-Man game.
07:30There's sports games,
07:31of course.
07:32I play a lot of 2K,
07:33so I imagine
07:34feeling the basketball
07:35dribbling through
07:36the controller
07:37and then,
07:38there's actually moments
07:39where you're shooting
07:40a free-throwing,
07:41you feel the heartbeat
07:42of your player
07:43through the controller.
07:44That stuff will be amplified
07:45and feel more convincing
07:46on this new controller.
07:47So, there's a lot
07:48of possibilities
07:49and I'm hoping
07:50that PS5 game developers
07:51are as amped about this
07:52as I am.
07:53That would be
07:54really exciting.
07:55So, that's it for now.
07:56Short video
07:57just to get the gears turning
07:58and think about this
07:59a little bit,
08:00but let me know
08:01what you think.
08:02Is this haptic engine
08:03in this controller,
08:04whatever they want
08:05to call it,
08:06is it really
08:07enough to convince you
08:08of PS5
08:09over Xbox?
08:10How are you feeling
08:11about this?
08:12Because I think
08:13this is exciting.
08:14I wanted to lift it
08:15and sort of separate it
08:16as a thought
08:17from the full reviews,
08:18but those are coming soon
08:19and of course,
08:20much more
08:21is in the pipeline as well.
08:22Thanks for watching.
08:23Catch you guys later.
08:24Peace.
