00:30Hey what's up guys, MKBHD here, and this week, the iPod Touch got an update, and possibly
00:49the last iPod update ever.
00:52Also, yes, this is an Austin Evans video title, and yes, I asked him if I could use it, and
00:57he said yes.
00:58Thanks Austin.
00:59Okay, so the iPod was, I think, Apple's first really super massive hit.
01:04You know, they had other popular products, but I remember a time in high school when
01:07literally everyone I knew either had an iPod or wanted one.
01:11They were ubiquitous.
01:12Also, fun fact, the first piece of tech I ever bought with my own money, you know,
01:17this was back in high school with my allowance money, before I had a channel, before I made
01:22any videos, but I was into tech.
01:24My first piece of tech was an iPod Touch, you know, back with the 30-pin and everything.
01:29So the iPod Touch was really near and dear to my heart.
01:32Then like a week later, it got stolen from my locker in school, so good times.
01:37But then of course, as we all know, the iPhone launched, combining the iPod with a couple
01:41of other things.
01:42An iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator.
01:51An iPod, a phone, are you getting it?
01:57And then the rest is history.
01:59That absolutely took off.
02:00We all know what the iPhone turned into, and it sort of pushed over the iPod as Apple's
02:04new baby, and it's dominated ever since.
02:06Even to this day, in 2019, 60% of all of Apple's revenue comes from iPhone sales.
02:12Now, the iPod's not even listed up at the top of the categories on Apple's website
02:16anymore.
02:17It feels kind of like this retired category.
02:19You kind of have to actually dig to find them and buy them.
02:23And so this past week, Apple updated one.
02:25And if you search iPod on apple.com, you can find them.
02:30So why?
02:31Well, this is it.
02:32So I bought the new product red 2019 iPod touch at the new baseline of 32 gigs of storage
02:37for 200 bucks.
02:39And on paper, it's barely an upgrade.
02:41It's mainly just this spec refresh in the exact same design it's had for the past couple
02:46of years.
02:47So now it's rocking an A10 fusion chip.
02:49So yes, the chip from the iPhone 7, but that is still a pretty big upgrade.
02:53And then it still has one gig of RAM, still the same 1043 milliamp hour battery from the
02:59past few years, still the same four inch LCD retina display, same home button with no
03:05touch ID, no face ID, same eight megapixel rear camera with a little camera bump and
03:12same huge white bezels on the front of every single one except the space gray model and
03:18the same 1.2 megapixel selfie camera up front that they've always had since the beginning.
03:24And it still has that same plastic sort of cut out hole punch on the back of the all
03:28metal iPod for GPS and other antenna signals to pass through instead of building, you know,
03:33antenna bands on the outside like every other device nowadays.
03:37So now knowing all this and actually having held it and felt it like the question is super
03:41obvious.
03:42Why would anyone in 2019 buy a new iPod touch, especially at 200, 300, even $400, but it's
03:52actually a little more reasonable than you might think.
03:54Well, except for the 300 or $400 variants, you should probably pretty much never have
03:58any reason to buy those.
04:00Like it's just straight up robbery.
04:01You should just buy a used iPhone 7 or something at that price instead.
04:04So that's dumb, but the $200 one, that's a real thing.
04:08So first reason someone might buy this and not an iPhone is actually specifically because
04:14it's not an iPhone.
04:15Lots of people, whether you agree with it or not want to get their kids a piece of tech,
04:18but they're too young for an iPhone or not responsible enough to have a phone yet.
04:23So they get an iPod to listen to music and mess with apps and games and get familiar
04:27with technology, watch videos, but they can't text or make calls like an iPhone would.
04:32But it still has iMessage and FaceTime and things like that to stay in touch with mom
04:36and dad and friends.
04:38When they're on wifi anyway, but yeah, that's a whole category.
04:41So that's people who don't already have a primary smartphone, but even if you do already
04:44have a phone, the iPod touch is of course much smaller.
04:48I for one definitely forgot how small this is.
04:51Like I don't know about you, but I always thought of the iPod touch as the biggest chunkiest
04:55iPod.
04:56I remember the iPod nano was great for like armband size or working out or running.
05:01The iPod shuffle was always tiny.
05:02So it seemed like the iPod touch was this big unwieldy iPod.
05:06But even today, people go running with their phones that are massive.
05:11But if you compare them today, the entire iPod touch from 2019 fits inside just the
05:17screen of the iPhone XS Max.
05:19It's just such a drastic difference.
05:22But yet the iPod's four inch screen, while it's technically smaller than the one on
05:25the front of the galaxy fold, the aspect ratio is much more standard.
05:29It's 16 by nine.
05:30So it's not impossible to type on, you still feel like you can use it normally.
05:34So this is truly one of the last devices, other than like the palm phone, with a screen
05:39that you can actually reach all four corners without struggling.
05:41And also my favorite part is holding it in my hands kind of makes my hands look just
05:45absolutely massive like Shaq's hands, you know that clip of him holding a perfectly
05:49normal size water bottle.
05:50Yeah, I feel like this iPod makes my hands look that big.
05:52But anyway, it's extremely thin and light, as you could probably guess from the 1000
05:57milliamp hour battery or so.
05:58But going running with it is no problem.
06:00You can hold it or have it in your pocket or an armband.
06:03That is the advantage this has over anything else is just being so portable.
06:07And then of course, yes, that headphone jack is so important as a media player.
06:11And yes, it comes with, as you saw, wired headphones in the box in 2019.
06:17So yeah, it's just really good for people who can't have a phone yet or don't have
06:21a phone yet that does everything this does.
06:24But even for people who do already have a phone, this is the only iPod left.
06:29It's the last iPod and iPods are just for playing music.
06:32So whether you use Apple Music or Spotify or whatever else, SoundCloud, it doesn't
06:37really matter.
06:38It's kind of still all happening in the cloud.
06:40So you don't usually need more than the 32 gigs of storage it starts with.
06:43You're set.
06:44I actually got my grandfather one of these a couple of years ago, the last gen, specifically
06:48so he could listen to whatever music he wanted at any time.
06:51So it's crazy.
06:52His music experience went from radio to just record players, to tapes and CDs, to just
07:01literally having whatever song you want on demand at any time.
07:04That's pretty crazy.
07:05So as a music player, the iPod still does the job.
07:08Other than that, you know, the camera, it's a nice to have, but it's not that great.
07:13The selfie camera is obviously not great.
07:15It's 1.2 megapixels, but it's not even about the megapixel count.
07:19It's good enough for FaceTime or to take a perfectly average selfie.
07:22It's nothing spectacular for 200 bucks.
07:25And despite the abysmal specs on paper, this is a prime example of where the numbers really
07:30don't tell the whole story.
07:31It still opens apps quickly and scrolls smoothly.
07:34And it's more than enough to just listen to music.
07:37And it's an excellent iPod.
07:38Oh, plus it's a bonus.
07:39If you're a developer, you can just have a throwaway iPod as a device with the latest
07:43version of iOS to test things on.
07:45So is this the last iPod update ever?
07:48I don't know.
07:49I don't think anyone outside of Apple really knows the answer to that question, but it
07:53sure feels like they've been slowly winding down that whole category for a while now.
07:58But yeah, this really takes me back to, you know, those days of my first ever pieces
08:02of tech I ever got and the craziness of having all the songs you want in your pocket with
08:08an iPod.
08:09Also, something I didn't tell you, after I didn't have my iPod Touch anymore, a couple
08:13months later, I went out and got a Zune, my Zune HD.
08:18And I actually really liked that thing.
08:20The Zune HD, it was all, it was matte black.
08:22It had this little OLED display, black bezels.
08:25So it was just sort of like this floating, super simple UI in the air.
08:29I actually really liked that.
08:30I don't know.
08:31I'd kind of go for one of those again.
08:33But anyway, RIP Zune.
08:35Anyway, that's why the brand new iPod Touch still exists in 2019.
08:40I could actually see people buying the $200 one, not the $300 one, not the $400 one.
08:46Don't get those.
08:47But if you get one, you could probably keep one of these around.
08:50Either way, thanks for watching.
08:53Catch you guys in the next one.
08:55Peace.
