00:00It's Apple Watch time!
00:01🎶
00:08G'day, you beautiful people!
00:10Welcome to Issa Does Tech, where we do tech in your life, in style.
00:13In this video, we're talking about the Apple Watch Series 8.
00:16We're gonna be unboxing this thing.
00:17We're looking at what's new.
00:19Putting it side by side with the Series 7.
00:21And I'm also gonna be talking about my experiences with this watch,
00:24having been wearing it for the last week or so.
00:27Let's start with unboxing.
00:28🎶
00:58🎶
01:18Of course, the Apple Watch 8 sets up and pairs really easily with an iPhone.
01:22And I'm just gonna say it, it looks exactly like the Apple Watch 7.
01:26In fact, here are the two watches side by side.
01:28And I swear to you, you won't be able to tell which is which at first glance.
01:33But that being said, I'm happy to report that this watch
01:36fits my tiny, tiny wrists really well.
01:39And for context, I wear a solo loop size 2 with Apple sizing.
01:43And for the starlight band on the 41mm watch,
01:46there's even space to tighten it for teenier-wristed folks.
01:50There is no exclusive watch face release, unlike what happened with the Watch 7.
01:54Although the watch faces on the 7 are also available on the Watch 8.
01:59There's also a new compass app.
02:02So this is the compass app, and that's pretty cool.
02:06It basically gives you, like,
02:12directions, literal directions.
02:15And you can do this backtrack feature,
02:20which allows you to, well, for one, retrace steps.
02:24So you literally won't ever get lost.
02:28You also have the option to drop flags.
02:31So if you want to remember a location, you can do that.
02:35So what's new with Apple Watch 8?
02:37First off, it has a new temperature sensor.
02:40So there are actually two temperature sensors on this watch.
02:43And Apple talks about being able to check fluctuations in your temperature
02:47and use this temperature info to retroactively track ovulation,
02:52if you're into that sort of thing.
02:54And I will add that Apple does say that all this data will be encrypted.
02:57So there's that.
02:58So let's take a look at my temperature data.
03:00I was told that it takes, like, around five days for the watch to fully get all the info.
03:05And I've been wearing it for more than that.
03:09Show all health data.
03:11So again, it gives you all these details.
03:16I especially love this feature because I'm trying to be more mindful of,
03:20like, the volume levels around me.
03:23You have heart rate variability, resting heart rates.
03:26This is pretty interesting to me because it tracks my baseline temperature.
03:31And for the last few days, my temperature has been lower.
03:35What's funny to me is that the last date was on the 6th
03:38and then my temperature started dropping.
03:40Now, I got boosted.
03:42And folks, get boosted.
03:44But I did get some side effects.
03:47I got chills on the evening of, like, the 8th or the 7th.
03:52Which is pretty interesting to see here.
03:55For cycle tracking, this is what that shows you.
04:00So all the details you have here.
04:04So again, this retroactive tracking, this is not, like,
04:07medical grade or medically approved for ovulation tracking.
04:12But at least you sort of get an idea.
04:14And there's now even more detailed sleep tracking on this thing.
04:17This is all my sleep data.
04:19And as you can see, I don't get a lot of it.
04:22But it's good to see everything here.
04:26Weeks, days.
04:30Man, I really need to get more sleep.
04:33Also nice.
04:36Another thing that's new, there's also crash detection on this watch.
04:39Which basically dials 911 when it senses that you've been in an accident.
04:43Pretty useful.
04:44Though this has been in the news recently because
04:47some lady went on a roller coaster and it dialed 911 from there.
04:50I will say, I was on a roller coaster and no, I did not have that enabled.
04:54So unfortunately, I wasn't able to test crash detection for you for reasons.
05:00Now on the 8th, you have the same fast charging
05:02that we initially saw on the watch 7.
05:04Which is great.
05:05I love it.
05:06Love that for this watch.
05:07And it helps that you can top up the watch when you're, like,
05:09showering in the morning.
05:10Which is what I tend to do.
05:12But I will say, I would have still wanted longer battery life on this watch.
05:18Because, well, I need it to be on me.
05:20So that I track my steps and I sleep.
05:22Because if it's not on me when I take those steps,
05:25did those steps really happen?
05:28Anyway, my main thing is that I am a chaotic person.
05:30And there is no rhyme or reason to when I will or will not charge.
05:34And one too many times because of the battery runtime of this watch.
05:38Which is around a day and a half.
05:40I do forget to charge.
05:41And it's a problem.
05:43Which brings me to another new thing on the watch.
05:46A new low power mode.
05:47It's the next best thing to having better battery.
05:52Now, I've had this watch on since it launched.
05:54And I've sort of dilly-dallyed on making this video.
05:56Because as I was thinking about what to say,
05:58I kept thinking, like, I really had nothing new to talk about with a watch 8.
06:03But as Josh has pointed out, in a lot of other occasions,
06:07when you don't have anything to say about a certain device that you're testing out,
06:11that also says a lot.
06:12And that's not necessarily a bad thing.
06:14So the thing with this Apple Watch 8 is that a lot of people will say
06:18that there isn't a lot of things new on this.
06:21And I can agree.
06:22After all, it does look and feel like the last Apple Watch.
06:26In fact, if someone asks me what the features of the Apple Watch 8 is,
06:29I'd point them in the direction of my Apple Watch 7 video
06:32and say, watch that with this video.
06:35But, and this I get reminded every time I have an Apple Watch on my wrist.
06:38If you're looking for one of, if not the best smartwatch out there,
06:42you've got to consider the Apple Watch.
06:44It's really a bunch of a lot of little things,
06:46like how good integration is if you're in the Apple ecosystem,
06:50to how well-rounded the feature set on this watch is,
06:53to just even how responsive this thing is on your wrist.
06:56Despite what some would call incremental updates,
06:58the Apple Watch is still up there.
07:00It's still the smartwatch to beat.
07:02And take note, I do think of wearables on a spectrum from smartwatches
07:06with smartwatches on one side and fitness trackers on the other.
07:10And from that perspective, I would say that the Apple Watch skews towards smartwatch,
07:15and now they've been working on fitness tracking.
07:18Now, I also don't think that the Apple Watch is the best fitness tracker out there,
07:22but I do think it's very capable.
07:23And after all, I feel like this point is bolstered
07:26by the fact that the Apple Watch Ultra exists.
07:29But again, what do I know?
07:30You've seen my measly stats.
07:31Anyway, the point is the Apple Watch has been the bar to beat
07:34in terms of the current wearable category.
07:36And this wasn't by one phenomenal step that they took
07:39to leave others in the dust that sets them apart.
07:42It's really these incremental steps that they take year after year,
07:46improving on the good stuff that they already have.
07:48And I'm not mad at that.
07:50Right, and that was our look at the Apple Watch 8.
07:53Let me know if you guys have questions.
