00:23Our weather team is monitoring where and when it will hit, possibly as a Category 3 storm.
00:28The death toll is still rising from Hurricane Helene.
00:31Entire towns remain cut off.
00:34President Biden is sending more active duty troops to the region.
00:36We take to the air with the National Guard bringing much-needed relief, and a mother

00:49ever recorded in October.

01:58From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight.
02:08Good evening, everyone.
02:09Thanks so much for joining us on this busy Sunday.
02:11I'm Lindsay Davis.
02:12Tonight, Florida residents are bracing for what could be another major hurricane.
02:18Evacuation orders have already been issued.
02:20Milton form laid today on track to be the second named storm to hit the Sunshine State
02:24in as many weeks.
02:26Residents are filling sandbags ahead of what's expected to be Milton's powerful storm surge
02:30when it comes ashore in a matter of days.
02:33Residents are also stocking up when it comes to essential supplies.
02:36Some shelves in central Florida are already bare.
02:39Milton is expected to strengthen in the warm waters of the Gulf and impact the entire state.
02:45All of this is the death toll is rising from Hurricane Helene.
02:48At least 230 people are confirmed dead.
02:50More than 170 are still missing.
02:53And tonight, President Biden announced he is sending another 500 active duty troops
02:57to North Carolina, joining the thousands already in the storm zone.
03:01Our weather team is standing by with the forecast.
03:03But ABC's Morgan Norwood leads us off from North Carolina.
03:07Tonight, crews in Florida racing to clear debris from Hurricane Helene as they brace
03:13for yet another hurricane set to hit this week.
03:16We know that it's headed straight towards Florida.
03:19We have a lot of people in Florida already helping to support the response and the recovery
03:24from Hurricane Helene, but also previous storms in Florida.
03:28So we're working with the state EOC to understand what their requirements are going to be so
03:32we can have those in place before it makes landfall.
03:35Residents filling up sandbags saying they're closely following Hurricane Milton set to
03:39hit on Wednesday.
03:40You have today and Monday to be able to prepare and to be able to take whatever actions that
03:47you deem appropriate.
03:49And the death toll from Helene still rising.
03:51At least 230 confirmed dead.
03:53More than 170 people still missing.
03:56There are still people that we're trying to find.
03:59The good thing is that a lot of people have now begun getting communication and are letting
04:05their loved ones know they are OK.
04:06Mackenzie Rink and her mother finally reuniting.
04:09After eight days with no contact.
04:11For me, it was just relief and thankfulness that I have a mom and I have somebody because
04:19there's so many people that are losing those that I know that they just wish they could
04:25hug again.
04:26Many families still in the dark.
04:28More than 150,000 customers without power in North Carolina.
04:32Crews working around the clock to restore electricity there.
04:35But state officials say that all area hospitals now back on the grid.
04:39Yesterday, Vice President Harris meeting with volunteers in Charlotte.
04:43How are you doing?
04:45We're making it.
04:46Harris vowing the administration will be there for the long haul.
04:49And today, President Biden announcing that he's ordered the deployment of 500 more active
04:53duty troops to assist in the recovery.
04:56We fly along with the National Guard.
04:58They've completed 422 flight missions since the storm hit over hard hit Swannanoa.
05:03The scope of the devastation clear.
05:06This was the scene from the ground just days ago.
05:08We pick up generators and dropping them off in Pensacola, North Carolina, a tiny community
05:13that's seen its fair share of Pauline's wrath.
05:15The volunteer fire department there rushing out to meet the guard.
05:19We then fly out to Hot Springs near the Tennessee border, dropping medical supplies to a school
05:23serving as a shelter.
05:25When I saw them, I didn't want to just cry, but you have to hold it together for everybody
05:29here that's looking up to you to do that.
05:31It allows you to take a breath because you know you're going to be taken care of.
05:35And Lindsay, those active duty service members Biden just authorized now make up the more
05:39than 7,600 troops across the storm zone.
05:42And as Milton takes aim at Florida tonight, the Biden administration also saying they're
05:46positioning resources there, but also urging Floridians to prepare.
05:50Lindsay.
05:51So much help is needed, Morgan.
05:53We'll have continuing coverage of Southeast Strong on abcnews.com and ABC News Live and
05:58more tomorrow on Good Morning America.
06:00As Morgan mentioned, Florida is bracing for another direct hit and a major concern is
06:05the debris that's still left there from Hurricane Helene.
06:08Crews along Florida's West Coast are rushing to complete as much of the job as they can
06:12before Milton hits this week.
06:14WABC meteorologist Danny Beckstrom joins us now live.
06:17And Danny, time out the track for us here.
06:20Yeah, Lindsay, the National Hurricane Center just issued the latest track update, but I
06:24want to start with some context because another system is dropping inches of rain over Florida
06:29today and tomorrow, meaning the state is already waterlogged before Milton makes its approach.
06:34On top of the latest track, Milton rapidly intensified to a Category 1 hurricane today,
06:38currently with wind of 85 miles per hour.
06:41Continued strengthening takes the storm to a major Category 4 hurricane as it tracks
06:45east, approaching Florida's Gulf Coast Wednesday afternoon as a Cat 3.
06:49The big bend down through Tampa still cleaning up from Helene, where further south, Fort
06:53Myers has seen so much rain this year, they could set a new yearly rainfall record by
06:57mid-October.
06:58Another record in the Atlantic, three current hurricanes in the basin.
07:01That's never happened this late in the season.
07:03Of course, Milton is the only one we're concerned with.
07:05Storm surge watches, hurricane watches should be issued for Florida by tomorrow morning.
07:09Lindsay?
07:10Milton is certainly the last thing they needed, Danny.
07:13We turn now to the race for the White House and the final sprint to Election Day.
07:16Both candidates are making their pitches in the must-win swing states.
07:20Former President Trump returned to Butler, Pennsylvania this weekend.
07:23The site of the July attempt on his life, Trump appeared with Elon Musk and honored
07:27the man who was killed in the assassination attempt.
07:30Meanwhile, early voting is already underway in many places.
07:34ABC's Mary Alice Parks is on the campaign trail.
07:37Tonight with just 30 days until Election Day, former President Donald Trump doubling down
07:42on dark rhetoric in the battleground state of Wisconsin, which he lost by roughly 20,000
07:47votes in 2020.
07:48This country is in big trouble.
07:50We're a failing nation.
07:52We are a failing nation.
07:54We're a nation in decline.
07:56And despite praise from several Republican governors, Trump criticizing the Biden-Harris
08:01administration's response to Hurricane Helene.
08:04And she sends their money to foreign nations.
08:06He and she, they send hundreds of billions of dollars.
08:11The White House and FEMA insisting they have the funds to cover the relief effort and even
08:16Republicans saying conspiracy theories are getting in the way of delivering aid.
08:20Harris responding late today to criticism against her character.
08:24I think it's really important not to let other people define you.
08:27And usually those people who will attempt to do it don't know you.
08:30On Saturday, Trump returning to Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was wounded in the July assassination
08:35attempt, taking a moment of silence for the firefighter who was killed.
08:41Tech mogul and the world's richest person, Elon Musk, joining him on stage.
08:46The Trump and Harris campaigns both in overdrive to get out the vote.
08:49At least 1.6 million ballots already cast.
08:53According to an analysis from the election lab at the University of Florida, early voting
08:57is down and moderately less partisan this year compared to this point in 2020, when
09:02many people chose to vote by mail due to the covid pandemic.
09:06According to analysis from L2, a national voter data analytics firm.
09:10With votes at stake, Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota, pushing
09:15back after he misrepresented his family used IVF when they actually used different fertility
09:21treatments.
09:22I will own up when I misspeak.
09:24I will own up when I make a mistake.
09:25Let's be very clear on that debate stage.
09:27The other night I asked one very simple question and Senator Vance would not acknowledge that
09:31Donald Trump lost the 2020 election.
09:34Mary Alice Parks joins us now from the campaign trail.
09:37Mary Alice sounds like Vice President Kamala Harris is doing a bit of a media blitz with
09:40several high profile interviews this week.
09:42Yeah, a flurry of high profile interviews before traveling out west again to campaign
09:47later this week.
09:48A big part of Harris's strategy and that of Trump lately is to boost Senate candidates
09:52as well.
09:53Democrats are defending many more Senate seats this year.
09:56There are about seven races that are really closely contested.
09:59And of course, we know that voter registration deadlines are quickly approaching and absentee
10:03ballots have already gone out in over 20 states.
10:06Lindsay, 30 days away.
10:07Mary Alice, thank you.
10:09Overseas now, the IDF is ordering the evacuation of more than two dozen villages in southern
10:14Lebanon.
10:15Last night, Israeli warplanes pounded Beirut.
10:17Video circulating online shows large explosions lighting up the night sky when a fuel storage
10:22site was hit.
10:23ABC's Patrick Riebel is in Beirut.
10:25And Patrick, these were some of the heaviest strikes in the war so far.
10:29Hi, Lindsay.
10:30Yeah, we've been seeing some Israeli airstrikes throughout the day here in Beirut again and
10:35actually just in the last little while.
10:36And as we speak, we've been hearing booms coming from the area behind me, which is the
10:41southern suburb of Beirut, which is a Hezbollah stronghold.
10:44We've seen intensive airstrikes hitting there just in the past few minutes, thick black
10:48smoke rising from there, as well as these booms coming across the water.
10:51And over 1,000 people have been killed across Lebanon in just the past two weeks, according
10:56to Lebanese health officials.
10:57It's been just over a week since Israel assassinated Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, here.
11:02Today, Lebanon's government insisting that shortly before Israel killed him, Nasrallah
11:07had agreed to a 21-day ceasefire backed by the U.S.
11:10A White House official tonight telling ABC that if that is true, it was never communicated
11:15to them.
11:16Hezbollah hasn't commented, and we just don't know for now.
11:19But as we await Israel's anticipated strike on Iran, the fear is that this war is only
11:24widening.
11:25Lindsay?
11:26It's been a concern all along.
11:27Patrick, thank you.
11:28Tonight, the IDF says it's conducting another ground operation in a northern city of Gaza.
11:33These images show people fleeing the devastated city.
11:35The IDF issued another evacuation order for northern Gaza this morning.
11:40The IDF says Hamas is rebuilding its operational capabilities there as the region marks one
11:44year since the Hamas attacks of October 7th.
11:47ABC's Matt Gutman has more from Tel Aviv.
11:50Tonight in Israel, it's been a year since the Gaza war erupted when Hamas gunmen from
11:56Gaza invaded Israel on October 7th, Israel's 9-11.
12:01And the war grinds on.
12:05Today, Israeli tanks rumbling into northern Gaza for the third time since the war began,
12:10displacing thousands.
12:12And Israeli airstrikes hit a mosque and a school in a designated humanitarian zone.
12:1645 killed in Gaza today, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
12:21The IDF saying they targeted Hamas command posts.
12:26On the anniversary, Hamas vowing to fight on.
12:29And in Israel, the trauma of October 7th still raw.
12:34We recently met Ilan at Kibbutz Nahal Oz, with explosions from Gaza still audible.
12:40At 6.30 that morning, as Hamas lobbed thousands of rockets into Israel and the sirens wailed,
12:45Ilan saw gunmen outside.
12:47Ilan and his wife hid in the shelter, gunmen shooting into their door.
12:51After eight hours, his daughter texted.
12:55The terrorists are trying to get into the house.
12:57Dad, help.
12:59And so you thought any moment you might lose your daughter.
13:02Daughter, my granddaughter.
13:05Then 13 minutes of silence and terror.
13:08What was it like when you saw that text message that said, no, it's the army?
13:18They were safe.
13:20Today, we checked in on Ilan.
13:21His daughter is one of only six families to have moved back.
13:24But that was OK with Ilan.
13:26His hands are full with what matters most.
13:30Yo.
13:31For so many, that's not the case.
13:32Over 250 hostages were kidnapped that day, seven of them in Yuval Haran's nuclear family.
13:38Six of his family members were released by Hamas during last November's ceasefire,
13:42his brother-in-law still being held by Hamas.
13:46Every day I wake up and I say, Tal is alive, Tal is coming back.
13:50I will see him hugging his family.
13:52I imagine him hugging his children.
13:55And it's past midnight here in Israel, Lindsay, already October 7th.
13:59Adding heartache to those hostage families.
14:01All the major memorials have been cancelled for today because of the threat from Hezbollah
14:06and Iran.
14:07And as Israel calibrates its response to Iran, the U.S. has made it very clear it does not
14:12want Israel attacking Iran's nuclear sites or its oil facilities.
14:16Lindsay.
14:16So much heartache, Matt.
14:19Here in New York, the NYPD is on high alert after multiple bomb threats targeting synagogues
14:24ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attacks.
14:26Police are increasing their presence at synagogues.
14:28The Anti-Defamation League is out with a new report finding there have been more than 10,000
14:34recorded anti-Semitic incidents since October 7th.
14:37That's a 200 percent increase over last year and the largest number ever in a one-year
14:42period.
14:43The NTSB is investigating a fiery, hard landing at the Las Vegas airport.
14:47Frontier Airlines Flight 1326 appeared to catch fire as it made an emergency landing.
14:52Some passengers could see the flames from their seats.
14:55No one was hurt, fortunately, and everyone was able to exit the plane after it landed.
14:59Here's ABC's Zerreen Shah.
15:02Tonight, the NTSB working to understand how this Frontier Airlines jet packed with passengers
15:08made a terrifying, fiery landing in Las Vegas.
15:11They got a fire in the right engine.
15:12We have no communication with the pilot whatsoever.
15:15His radios are out.
15:16Watch as flames spew from the Airbus 321 as it hits the tarmac.
15:20It's a very hard landing and followed by a lot of shaking in the plane.
15:26We were just in shock.
15:28We're like, you know, you see this on movies and shows, but you don't expect it to happen
15:33to you.
15:33The incident happening Saturday around 3.15 in the afternoon.
15:37It's putting out a fire.
15:38After a short flight from San Diego, carrying 190 passengers and seven crew members,
15:44landed at Harry Reid International Airport.
15:47The pilot declaring an emergency after detecting smoke in the cockpit.
15:51Everyone remain seated.
15:53One of the passengers capturing this dramatic video as part of the plane was covered in
15:57flames.
15:58The wheel melted, firefighters dousing the flames.
16:02Federal investigators sending the cockpit voice recorder and flight data to the NTSB
16:06lab in Washington, D.C. for evaluation.
16:10And a lot of shaken passengers, but Frontier Airlines says that no injuries were reported
16:14and the cause tonight still under investigation.
16:16Lindsay.
16:17Relieved everyone's OK.
16:18Zorin, thank you.
16:19There's still much more ahead on World News tonight, this Sunday, including wildfires
16:23in the West and when there might be some relief from the unprecedented heat wave and the wild
16:28celebration after a huge college football upset.
16:34Next tonight, parts of the Southwest have never been this hot in October.
16:3831 million people are under heat alerts.
16:41Phoenix has seen a record breaking high temperatures every day for nearly two weeks.
16:45Some relief is expected by midweek.
16:47Also tonight, several large wildfires are burning in the West.
16:50Dark plumes of smoke were seen over Sheridan County in Wyoming.
16:53The Elk Fire has burned more than 72,000 acres and is zero percent contained.
16:59When we come back, a YouTube star loses control of his $200,000 car as he livestreamed the
17:05whole thing.
17:06To the index in a serious crash that was live streamed, YouTube star Jack Daugherty appeared
17:11to be distracted by his phone while driving his McLaren during a rainstorm in Miami Saturday
17:16morning.
17:16He lost control, hydroplaning into a barrier.
17:20He and a friend who recorded the accident were later treated at a hospital.
17:23Daugherty's McLaren worth more than $200,000 was totaled.
17:28Next, a once in a lifetime upset in college football.
17:32Vanderbilt beat number one Alabama on Saturday, 40 to 35.
17:37Vanderbilt students were so excited they tore down one of the goalposts and carried it a
17:41couple of miles into downtown Nashville.
17:44Then they tossed it into the Cumberland River.
17:46Vanderbilt had not beaten the Crimson Tide in 40 years.
17:51When we come back, America strong.
17:53An NFL star's biggest victory, and it wasn't on the field.
17:57Finally tonight, America strong.
17:59A football star is back where he belongs.
18:02And now Horton is back on the field in uniform.
18:05NFL players have a reputation for being tough, but Dylan Horton may have taken his biggest
18:11hit yet far from the gridiron.
18:15Today's return to the field for the Houston Texans number 92 was an emotional comeback
18:21for the defensive end who just months ago was out of the game.
18:24The 24-year-old was diagnosed with late stage Hodgkin lymphoma last December after appeared
18:30in 10 games for the Texans.
18:34On Wednesday, when he returned to practice, his supportive coach D'Amico Ryans shared
18:39this about him.
18:40For Dylan to be back with everything that he's gone through, battling cancer, and to
18:46see him back on the field after almost an entire year of not being able to play, it
18:51is and to see him back on the field after almost an entire year of missing football,
18:56man, attacking it with the right mindset, a positive attitude really goes a long way
19:01and Dylan represents that.
19:03And we're all very thankful and happy to have him back today.
19:06Horton's story is an inspiration to us all about the audibles life calls along the way
19:12and our ability to persevere.
19:15Cancer free and back on the roster.
19:18Thanks so much for watching tonight.
19:19I'm Lindsay Davis.
19:20David Muir back here tomorrow.
19:22Have a great night.
