En 1931, un barco de pasajeros alemán zarpa de Veracruz, México, con rumbo al puerto alemán de Bremerhaven. Los pasajeros son personas muy distintas entre sí, y durante el trayecto comienzan a mostrarse no solo sentimientos como el romance o la insatisfacción vital, sino otros tan peligrosos como el antisemitismo y la xenofobia, propia de esos años en Alemania.
