00:00The Justice Department says Elon Musk may be undermining the integrity of our election,
00:04and it's politely asking him to stop.
00:06In recent days, Musk's political action committee, AmericaPAC,
00:10has been offering a daily $1 million lottery open to registered swing state voters who
00:14sign a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments.
00:17CNN reports that the Justice Department has sent the PAC a letter saying that
00:21this practice may violate federal law against paying people to register to vote.
00:25University of Pennsylvania Cary Law School professor Michael Morse told NBC News,
00:30This is at best very questionable legally.
00:32I think you can read this petition as an inducement to register to vote.
00:36Musk, a supporter of Donald Trump, certainly seems to view registration as a goal.
00:40On Tuesday, he posted on X,
00:42New Republican voter registration last week in Pennsylvania
00:45absolutely crushed Democrat voter registration. Let's go!
00:50But it's not clear that the Justice Department will initiate any further action.
00:54Morse said,
00:54The Department of Justice is authorized to enforce the statute,
00:57but I think in the next three weeks they have other things to do.
