LA prosecutor to ask for resentencing of Menendez brothers

Los Angeles' chief prosecutor says he will seek a resentencing for Lyle and Erik Menendez, brothers who were jailed for life in the 1990s over the grisly murder of their parents, in a move that could lead to their immediate parole. District Attorney George Gascon says he will ask a judge to rule that the men, whose case has come in for renewed attention because of a Netflix series, should have their sentence reduced in a way that would make them eligible to be released in the coming months.

00:00I have to tell you that after a very careful review of all the arguments that were made
00:06for people on both sides of this equation, I came to a place where I believe that under
00:15the law resentencing is appropriate and I am going to recommend that to a court tomorrow.
00:22I'm going to recommend to the court that the life without the possibility of parole be
00:27removed and that they would be sentenced for murder, which because there are two murders
00:34involved, that would be 50 years to life.
00:38However, because of their age under the law, since they were under 26 years of age at the
00:45time that these crimes occurred, they would be eligible for parole.
