00:00Hey, horror legends have to start somewhere, even if that means being in one of the worst
00:05video games ever made.
00:07What the hell happened?
00:11AHH!
00:14The first full-length Terrifyer hit the scene in 2016 as a somewhat obscure horror movie
00:19that went all-in on shocking gore.
00:21Not a decade later, Terrifier is now a popular franchise, with the third installment making
00:26his audience cheer and pass out in theaters in equal measure.
00:30As Terrifier has gone from a small indie production to a beloved horror franchise, it's also
00:34made its way outside of the horror fanatic subculture.
00:38In October 2024, it was announced that Terrifier is getting its own video game, an old-school
00:43beat-'em-up with more than a passing resemblance to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Game.
00:49Fans of the movies are excited to get the chance to control Art the Clown for themselves,
00:53and gamers are interested to see what all the fuss is about Terrifier.
00:56For the star of the films, though, the video game world is already pretty familiar.
01:00Hey, hey, hey, my brother, my brother man, you here for a home improvement?
01:08David Howard Thornton, the man responsible for bringing Art to life, has actually spent
01:12a good bit of time working as a video game voice actor.
01:15In 2013, he had the opportunity to voice some characters in Ride to Hell Retribution, which
01:21has one of the worst Metacritic ratings we've ever seen — a whopping 19.
01:26Ride to Hell undoubtedly earned its bad reputation, but Thornton's few scenes in the game proved
01:31that he had some acting chops well before he stepped into Art's clown shoes.
01:35As you might have guessed, Ride to Hell came out when Sons of Anarchy was one of the most
01:39popular shows on television.
01:41The game follows Jake Conway, a Vietnam vet seeking revenge after his brother gets killed
01:45by a member of a gang called the Devil's Hand.
01:48The plot is as cliché as you can imagine, but it's arguably the strongest part of the
01:53game.
01:54Ride to Hell was an absolute mess from top to bottom.
01:57The combat mechanics, a main focus of the gameplay, were unresponsive and uninspired
02:01even when they worked.
02:03Players hoping for great motorcycle mechanics in a biker game were solely disappointed to
02:07find that riding rarely happened in Ride to Hell, and what it does, it makes driving in
02:12Grand Theft Auto 4 seem like a smooth experience.
02:15AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
02:20Metro's reviews said, quote,
02:22"...words cannot explain just how awful Ride to Hell really is," adding that
02:26"...the game is so bad it could suck the enamel off your wisdom teeth."
02:30Giant Bomb named it the worst game of 2013, and in a 1 out of 10 review, GameSpot argued
02:36that it could be a competitor for the worst game of all time.
02:39Every review pointed out the uninspired and barely functional mechanics, but many of them
02:44all sight of the game's voice acting as a major disappointment.
02:47We're gonna let you be the judge, but we respectfully disagree when it comes to Thornton's performance.
03:00David Howard Thornton didn't get to play the main character in Ride to Hell, but that's
03:04probably for the better.
03:05Jake Conway might have been the focus of the story, but he's far from memorable.
03:09Besides, by playing side characters, Thornton got to ham it up and show off his range in
03:14more ways than one, introducing… well, we'll let Jake's uncle and the most badass character
03:19in the game say it for us.
03:21You won't have any trouble finding him.
03:23He's called Dr. Blotter.
03:27As Dr. Blotter, Thornton got to play a far-out hippie doctor who's clearly taken a few too
03:32many psychedelics.
03:33Jake Conway comes off as even more stiff and awkward than usual, as Thornton really plays
03:38up the Doc's eccentricities, like a character who got left out of the final cut of Easy
03:42Rider.
03:43You give me something, I'll give you something.
03:49It's the nice bit of solid character work that stands out in the game.
03:52Thornton shines even more as a villain called Anvil.
03:55Now that we've seen Thornton in Terrorfire, it's clear that playing a murderous bad guy
03:59is more in his wheelhouse.
04:01Again, Anvil might not be the most memorable villain of all time, but we think Thornton's
04:05performance is worth at least another point in all those reviews.
04:09It makes you want to see what Thornton can do with a similar side character in a GTA
04:13game.
