00:00Is it legal to post a selfie with your ballot? Depends on where you live.
00:03According to Ballotpedia, some states ban the practice entirely,
00:07some allow it only for absentee or mail-in ballots, some explicitly allow it,
00:11and some don't currently have laws addressing the issue.
00:14HuffPost recommends checking with your local board of elections.
00:17The practice is banned in some states as a way of maintaining the secret ballot.
00:21The idea is that voters can't be bribed or intimidated
00:24if there's no way of knowing who they actually voted for.
00:27But not everyone believes this precaution makes sense.
00:30Susan Hogarth is currently suing the state of North Carolina over that state's ban
00:34after she received a letter from that state's board of elections
00:36demanding that she take down her own ballot selfie.
00:39According to the News & Observer, Hogarth is a libertarian and is running for state senate.
00:43She said in a press release,
00:45Privacy is good for those who want it. Openness should be available to those who prefer it.
