00:27Papa!
00:28Papa!
00:33Please, not in front of my children.
00:39Rez knows about a Dene soldier, a Canadian soldier,
00:42that ends up in Afghanistan and he's in an ambush
00:46and taken hostage by the Taliban.
00:48And he uses his life in the Arctic, his upbringing,
00:52to kind of survive what's happening in the present.
00:58I am a Dene soldier.
01:01I am a Dene soldier.
01:04I am a Dene soldier.
01:08I am a Dene soldier.
01:14I am a Dene soldier.
01:16Our people have always been there,
01:18whether it's World War I or II or Vietnam.
01:21We've always been in these big world stories
01:24and it's not often we get to see ourselves reflected in that way.
01:29I should have killed you when I had the chance.
01:34All the should haves can make a man old.
01:39You're not like them.
01:41No.
01:45But I am caught in the same web.
01:48I think what's key to the relationships in the film
01:52is how do we recognise people?
01:55Do we recognise them because they look like us?
01:59Do we recognise things in each other that are similar
02:02and does that make us more human?
02:04So I was just wondering what it might be like for these two cultures,
02:07Indigenous cultures, ancient cultures,
02:09to meet and what that dialogue would be
02:12because both peoples have survived, you know, against all odds.
02:16In history class we read that there was an explorer
02:19that didn't even have 10,000 words for snow.
02:23Not really.
02:25Sometimes proving someone wrong makes other things right.
02:29Culturally, we've been really great at surviving
02:32and I think part of our ability to understand that we come from this land,
02:36that this land gives us something uniquely
02:39because that's where our feet's rooted from, that's where we come from.
02:43But it's also the root of who we are
02:46and how we've been able to survive with such grace
02:49is because we're still standing here on our land, on our earth
02:53and that has its own power.
02:55And so for Dylan, that's what's going to make him survive anywhere.
02:59That's what's going to help him survive anywhere in the world.
