00:00Welcome to E.T.'s Frightfully Funny Flicks.
00:03I'm Cathy DeLaura, and throughout our show,
00:06we're opening up our E.T. vault
00:07to look back at interviews and behind-the-scenes moments
00:10from the films that are not only spooky, but also funny.
00:14From the bewitching Sanderson sisters in Hocus Pocus,
00:18to the whimsical works of Tim Burton, E.T. has it all.
00:21Now, the recipe for balancing the frightening with the funny
00:34can be tricky, but these films all
00:37seem to have the same secret ingredient,
00:39and her name is Christina Ricci.
00:43She's a no-emotion little girl.
00:46Are they dead?
00:48Does it matter?
00:49Everybody knows a lot of people like that.
00:51Ha ha!
00:54Showtime!
00:56She doesn't show lots of happiness,
00:58or she doesn't show you when she's sad,
01:00except for maybe she'll crack a little smile sometimes,
01:03or she'll give you a little evil grin,
01:05but that's pretty much it.
01:07She's scheming.
01:08She loves to be suspicious of people.
01:10May I have the salt?
01:14What do we say?
01:17Now.
01:20Well, the hard thing for me is the food,
01:23because we had a couple of breakfast scenes,
01:25and you just look at this food, and you go, oh.
01:30Where's your costume?
01:31This is my costume.
01:33I'm a homicidal maniac.
01:34They look just like everyone else.
01:36What do your friends say when they find out that you're
01:38playing in this movie?
01:40Well, mainly they just go around humming
01:42the theme song for a while.
01:44The Addams family.
01:48Because when I first told them, everybody
01:50started hearing about it, and they kept humming the theme
01:53song, kind of annoying me.
01:56Don't torture yourself, Gomez.
02:00That's my job.
02:01Well, I read the script, and I thought
02:03it was very well written, and it was a lot of fun,
02:06very much like a family kind of atmosphere,
02:09except that they are very weird, crazy, bizarre, humorous,
02:15and human at the same time.
02:17Look at her.
02:20I would die for her.
02:23I would kill for her.
02:26Either way, what bliss.
02:28I see it sort of like that people are people,
02:30no matter what, and no matter how they dress,
02:33no matter how they live.
02:34People are people, and human beings are human beings.
02:37And beyond the fun and games and all that,
02:40there is a kind of message that says, you know,
02:43weird-looking people are human beings, too.
02:46And you'll see in the Addams family
02:47that these people are very warm, and they're very loving,
02:50and they're real human beings, in spite of their weirdness.
02:56Leather straps, red-hot pokers.
02:59Later, my dearest.
03:02And he starts dancing the Russian dance.
03:05Da, da, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee.
03:09Hey!
03:09All right.
03:10All right.
03:12OK.
03:13Let's try that again.
03:16The brothers Karamazov and the German brothers Grimm.
03:19There's Orville Wright.
03:20And Wilbur.
03:21Orville's nothing minus him.
03:22Hey, let's dance the dance of brotherly love.
03:27Mamushka!
03:29You've been practicing.
03:31Oh, gosh.
03:32Well, first they'd come in, and they'd put my hair up in a wrap.
03:36They'd put it in, like, three big pins,
03:38and then they'd put it in a little bun,
03:40and then they'd put it in, like, three big pin curls
03:42and put the stocking cap over it.
03:45And they put my makeup on.
03:46Of course, it made me, like, really pale.
03:48And they did weird stuff to my eyes.
03:50And then they'd put the wig on me.
03:53In your arms!
03:57Our nanny is, like, psycho.
03:58And I realized that, and I'm starting
04:00to get kind of suspicious.
04:02And she realizes that I'm being suspicious.
04:05And so she tells our mother and father
04:07that we really want to go to summer camp really badly.
04:10Summer camp?
04:11And everybody there is, like, blonde and blue-eyed.
04:13And, you know, they're a couple misfits.
04:16And they're sort of our friends.
04:17And we really stand out.
04:19Oh, Wednesday's at that very special age
04:21when a girl has only one thing on her mind.
04:25Boys.
04:26Homicide.
04:28My favorite scene to shoot was when we were doing the play,
04:31and all the Chippewas take over the show
04:35and we're killing the pilgrims and roasting
04:37our camp counselors on a spitz.
04:39Ah!
04:42That was just really exciting, because it was really
04:44like I was shooting an action-adventure film,
04:47because, like, there are people diving on set
04:49and shooting flaming arrows.
04:50And it was just really exciting.
04:52And I felt like I was a part of something really cool.
04:55It was great.
04:56They're just shy.
04:58We're not shy.
04:59We're contagious.
05:00I probably like camp, but for some reason, I've never been.
05:03I don't know.
05:04I can't swim.
05:06Wednesday doesn't like it, though.
05:07She's not the outdoorsy type.
05:10I have to get out of here.
05:12I have allergies.
05:13I meet David Krumholtz, who plays Joel.
05:17And we basically, like, I guess sort of fall in love.
05:21Anybody who's sort of, like, different and sort of strange
05:25is total Adams material, you know?
05:29It's the kind of person we just accept right away.
05:33Was this your first on-screen kiss?
05:34Yes.
05:35It really wasn't that big of a deal.
05:37I mean, it was just like, it's not real life.
05:39It's a movie.
05:40And, you know, nobody made a big deal out of it.
05:45It wasn't a big deal.
05:46Why do you hate the baby?
05:48We don't hate him.
05:49We just want to play with him, especially his head.
05:52Our little baby brother is named Hubert.
05:55And when he first comes, me and Pugsley are totally jealous.
05:59We just hate that he's new and that they all love him.
06:03He's a real devil.
06:05And so we try to kill him, like, in as many ways as we can.
06:09We do our own little scientific experiment,
06:11which will fall first, a cannonball or a baby.
06:14What a glorious evening.
06:16Rain.
06:24She really knows what she's doing, you know?
06:26She's, I mean, I guess in some ways
06:28she manipulates situations just a little bit.
06:32Isn't she pretty?
06:34She's scaring me.
06:36Actually, I do smile in this movie.
06:46There's a roller coaster scene thing where you're in a chair
06:49and you go down a thing.
06:50Was that for real?
06:51I mean, were you going?
06:52Well, no, it wasn't really fast.
06:53They did it really slow, and then they just
06:55kind of speeded up the film.
07:03Oh!
07:09Jasper!
07:14What about the house?
07:16It was great, but, you know, what's actually kind of funny
07:18is that the outside, half of it is a matte painting.
07:22When we were shooting it, there's only half a house there,
07:24and it was kind of like, well, what are they going
07:25to do for the rest of the house?
07:27Yeah.
07:27But inside was just great.
07:30What was that?
07:31The Up and Atom Machine.
07:33My dad was a great inventor, but he had a little trouble
07:36getting going in the morning.
07:37Didn't he ever hear of caffeine?
07:39I think kids really enjoy it, but I think adults will go see
07:42it and enjoy it also, just because they
07:44knew the Casper character.
07:46And, you know, there are a lot of themes
07:47that I guess they can relate to.
07:49Casper, I have a date.
07:51What's this big guy got that I don't, huh?
07:54A pulse?
07:55Big, fleshy deal.
07:58I had one flying scene.
07:59We were all in harnesses, and there was,
08:02they did it a couple ways.
08:03One way was we had a harness on, and, you know,
08:06it was rigged from above.
08:09Another way, they had a platform that was
08:12rigged to rise and turn around.
08:15Casper, no, no, no, no, no!
08:17No!
08:21Casper, no.
08:22Oh, my god.
08:23Hi.
08:24This is very high.
08:24Is it hard being young and kind of growing up on camera?
08:28I don't think so.
08:29I mean, there's nothing really hard about it.
08:33The hours aren't that long, and I love working.
08:36So it's not.
08:39I'm having fun.
08:40I think that if I was trying to be something else,
08:43I might feel pressure.
08:44But I realize people always want to make you
08:47into something else, and they want to make you perfect.
08:49I just kind of remember that I'm 15,
08:51and I'm still going through my awkward stage.
08:53And, you know, that's OK.
08:54I don't have to be perfect.
08:56No one's perfect at 15 or any other age.
08:59Can I keep you?
09:05Casper?
09:11Ghosts and Christina Ricci?
09:13Now, that is a winning combination.
09:15Coming up, we've got Janet, Brad, and, of course,
09:18Frank N. Furter.
09:27The Rocky Horror Picture Show is considered
09:29to be the longest-running movie in cinema history.
09:33And for years, it has been leaving fans
09:35with a sense of anticipation.
09:39Let me show you a ride, and maybe play you a song.
09:44You look like you're going to have a good time.
09:46You look like you're going to have a good time.
09:48You look like you're going to have a good time.
09:50You look like you're going to have a good time.
09:52You look like you're going to have a good time.
09:54You look like you're both pretty grooving.
09:56The Rocky Horror Picture Show first hit theaters in 1975,
10:00a big-screen adaptation of a successful theatrical
10:03production in London.
10:04I see you shiver with anticipation.
10:10The movie starred Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick,
10:13future rock star Meatloaf, and Tim Curry,
10:16who originated the role of Dr. Frank N.
10:18Furter in the stage show.
10:20Well, how about that?
10:23How about that?
10:24Despite a meager reception at the box office,
10:27Rocky Horror slowly crept its way up to cultural phenomenon.
10:31The general public was not ready for anything like that.
10:35The kids were.
10:36The flick developed a fan movement
10:38unprecedented in cinema.
10:40I mean, it happened, I suppose, because four or five people
10:43were smashed one day and went dressed as the characters,
10:46and it just sort of took off from New York.
10:48Weekly midnight screenings evolved into an immersive
10:51experience, and in short time,
10:53they were popping up across the country.
10:55We went on to be the biggest cult film in history.
10:58People line up to see it a hundred times.
11:00They're dressed like the characters and throw things
11:02at the screen.
11:03That's why we're opening Tim and Meat's One-Stop Rocky
11:07Horror Shop.
11:08Come on here.
11:09All the Rocky Horror props you need under one roof.
11:12While the movie played on screen,
11:14shadow casts dressed as the characters and reenacted scenes.
11:18What all the parents are worried about
11:20is what's going on in the audience.
11:22Can't blame us for that.
11:23The audience got in on the fun by ceremoniously throwing
11:26items at the screen and, of course,
11:28dancing the time warp.
11:30I don't know.
11:31I mean, people are writing papers on it now,
11:33breaking down the barrier between film and the audience.
11:35I got sort of very earnest students of sociology saying,
11:38you know, will you read my term paper?
11:40For many, going to a Rocky Horror midnight screening
11:43turned into a seminal coming-of-age experience.
11:47The little kids start talking about have you seen
11:49the Rocky Horror show?
11:50And they aim to be able to go to see.
11:52I think it's become a rites of passage.
11:54I see it as sort of a coming-of-age experience, too.
11:57When they reach the age of 12 or 13,
11:59they finally grow up enough and become an adult,
12:02and they can go see the Rocky Horror Picture Show
12:04on Saturday night.
12:05Whatever happened to Saturday night?
12:07I remember I played the record enough that I had
12:10to buy it again.
12:11I wasn't allowed to see it.
12:13I've been a fan ever since.
12:14I used to sneak it and watch it all the time
12:16until my mom finally walked in on me one day,
12:18and I tried to stop it, and it wouldn't stop.
12:20Rocky Horror went from underground hit to mainstream.
12:24Good evening.
12:25My name is Jim Carrey.
12:26Even becoming part of Jim Carrey's
12:28early stand-up comedy.
12:30Let's see what's in the snob.
12:33Over the years, Rocky Horror has received
12:35all kinds of pop culture tributes.
12:38I've one thing to say, and that's, damn it,
12:40Janet, I love you.
12:43It was a great opportunity to do because I think
12:45our show is all about being an outcast,
12:47and I think that Rocky Horror is a show
12:49for poor outcasts to go to.
12:51And in 2016, the musical was reimagined
12:54for a star-studded TV production.
12:56Quake with fear, you tiny fools.
12:59I think one of the most special things about
13:01Rocky Horror is the theme of it has remained true.
13:04It's be yourself, be true to yourself,
13:06and explore who you were meant to be.
13:09In a groundbreaking portrayal, Laverne Cox was cast
13:12as Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
13:14Enchanteur.
13:16What's really interesting to me about this character
13:18is that she's an alien.
13:20And I think one of the most powerful things
13:22about Rocky Horror Picture Show is that
13:24for over 40 years, it has been a symbol
13:26for people who are identified as LGBT
13:29or queer in some way.
13:31It's appropriate that our Frank-N-Furter
13:33is a woman now, and a trans woman.
13:36Laverne hit upon the biggest part
13:38of Rocky Horror's legacy.
13:41There's a one-of-a-kind cinema experience
13:43waiting for the next generation
13:45to step into the roles of...
13:47Janet!
13:48Dr. Scott!
13:49Janet!
13:50Ah!
13:51Rocky!
13:52I suppose it's about people
13:53that are outside of society
13:54and find their way in.
13:55I would like to think it's because
13:57it encourages people to have dreams,
13:59not just to dream something, but to be it.
14:01And that it's all about
14:03whatever you are is alright.
14:05Creature out of a night
14:07Creature out of a night
14:09I mean, talk about a classic!
14:11Alright, coming up, we've got more
14:13Frightfully Funny Flicks.
14:34When highlighting Frightfully Funny Flicks,
14:36there is one group we knew
14:38we had to call the Ghostbusters.
14:42Ghostbusters is going to be
14:43a very, very funny movie.
14:45Absolutely.
14:46Funny, scary, thrills and chills
14:47for the whole family,
14:48and a PG rating, we hope.
14:53Get her!
14:54Ah!
14:57If this movie is funny,
14:59will it still be scary?
15:01I think we're scared right now
15:02that it's not going to be funny,
15:03so I think we're already
15:04a good part of the way there.
15:05Do you have any notion
15:06of what a ghost should look like?
15:08I know what they look like
15:09in the script,
15:10and they're pretty funny, you know.
15:12But I don't personally
15:14have a problem with a ghost
15:16in the movie.
15:17I have a problem
15:18with another kind of creature.
15:20Are you the Keymaster?
15:22Yes.
15:24I'm a friend of his.
15:25He told me to meet him here.
15:26Well, I don't think scary
15:28is its main purpose.
15:29Funny is its main purpose.
15:30And fun and thrills.
15:33Are you scared of ghosts?
15:35What?
15:36No, I'm not scared of ghosts.
15:38He's the skeptic.
15:39I'm scared of ghosts.
15:40His character,
15:41Dr. Venkman,
15:42in the movie,
15:43is a skeptic
15:44and is not afraid of ghosts.
15:45My character
15:46is afraid of ghosts
15:47and is sort of the optimist.
15:49What happened?
15:50Are you okay?
15:51He slimed me.
15:52That's great!
15:53I play the bushy squirrel
15:54of the three, right?
15:56Yes.
15:57And it's a good look
15:58for him too, isn't it?
15:59He looks fabulous.
16:00It's the point
16:01How are the two of you
16:02enjoying working together?
16:03This has been a lot of fun.
16:04We haven't worked together
16:05since Saturday Night Live.
16:06A corkscrew!
16:07A corkscrew!
16:08Oh, thank you.
16:09Oh, thank you.
16:10You know,
16:11it's the one thing
16:12I could really use
16:13around the house.
16:14You know, lately
16:15I've been sucking the cork out
16:16and I end up
16:17drinking the whole bottle.
16:18We have a lot of bad blood
16:19to get out from those days.
16:20And we're catching up to do it.
16:21Yeah, we have a lot
16:22of catching up.
16:23It's really,
16:24it's really been a lot
16:25of fun to work together
16:26and I don't want to get
16:27corny and emotional,
16:28but could you cut
16:29that out?
16:30Could you cut the
16:31camera for a second?
16:32You've never worked
16:33with the two of them before.
16:34Are you all laughing
16:35on the set all day long?
16:36They're funny.
16:37I don't have many scenes
16:38with all of them
16:39because I'm one
16:40of the victims,
16:41you know,
16:42but no,
16:43they're just very,
16:44they're just like,
16:45you know, good people.
16:46We came,
16:47we saw,
16:48we kicked its ass!
16:49Were you at all
16:50worried about whether
16:51that chemistry
16:52would be there?
16:53Oh,
16:54I think that's sort
16:55of a given.
16:56We all come from
16:57the same background
16:58and, you know,
17:00we're just exercising it,
17:01that's all.
17:02And I'm,
17:03you know,
17:04listen,
17:05hey,
17:06for me,
17:07I can work with anybody.
17:08I don't know about you.
17:09I work with animals
17:10mostly,
17:11but we've known
17:12each other for
17:13ten years
17:14or we go back,
17:15so we know going in
17:16we really don't
17:17have many problems.
17:22The movie has
17:23a great deal of heart,
17:24a great deal of humor
17:25and innocence,
17:26I think,
17:27you know,
17:28I think that's
17:29what attracted me to it.
17:30It's what Danny Aykroyd
17:31calls
17:32a little boy's comedy.
17:34Human sacrifice,
17:35dogs and cats
17:36living together,
17:37mass hysteria!
17:38Now explain it to me
17:39why you're having the party
17:40at the beginning
17:41of the production.
17:42Isn't it supposed
17:43to be at the end?
17:44Well,
17:45this is to just see
17:46the set in its full glory
17:47before we destroy it
17:48in the movie.
17:50It's the Stay Puft
17:51Marshmallow Man.
17:54New York is going
17:55in this movie?
17:56Uh,
17:57there's,
17:58yeah,
17:59it's,
18:00it's on the edge,
18:01it's definitely
18:02on the edge.
18:03We imply that
18:04the city is threatened
18:05and that's what
18:06the ghost busters
18:07are all about,
18:08coming to
18:09save the island
18:10of Manhattan
18:11and whoever else
18:12wants to jump in.
18:13Ray,
18:14when someone asks you
18:15if you're a god,
18:16you say,
18:17yes!
18:19They've built New York
18:20for us here,
18:21yes.
18:22I wish everyone
18:23could have life like this,
18:24they could have
18:25their own Paris vacation
18:26or whatever.
18:27This is not ironic,
18:28this is silly
18:29that you can have
18:30this here,
18:31I don't know.
18:32Only in America.
18:33Is there some statement
18:34about how you're
18:35going to get along
18:36together in this film
18:37by having the party
18:38at the beginning
18:39instead of the end?
18:40Uh,
18:41well,
18:42things are pretty good
18:43so far.
18:44I think when you're
18:45getting along
18:46in the beginning,
18:47you have parties
18:48in the beginning.
18:49There's some people
18:50who wait till the end
18:51that always regret
18:52that they weren't
18:53drunk on the set more,
18:54you know,
18:55didn't drive cars
18:57and all that stuff,
18:58you know,
18:59why didn't we
19:00insult someone
19:01or get arrested.
19:02That comes near the end.
19:03You know what,
19:04now we have
19:05all our full faculties,
19:06this is the time to,
19:07you get dulled.
19:08It's true.
19:09Your senses are dulled
19:10by the end of the film
19:11and you really can't
19:12appreciate free drinks
19:13anymore, you know,
19:14and a free drink now
19:15means something.
19:16Stick around,
19:17we've got more spooky
19:18content right here on ET.
19:26It has been said
19:39that Tim Burton
19:40is a master of blending
19:42fear with laughter,
19:44so let's take a look
19:45at some of his
19:46iconic films.
19:47There are few who deny
19:50it what I do,
19:51I am the best for
19:52my talents are renowned
19:54far and wide.
19:56I didn't intend
19:57to write the songs
19:58for myself.
19:59I'm not sure exactly
20:00what point I realized
20:02that I was the one
20:05that should sing this part,
20:06but in developing the songs,
20:09Jack's ups and downs
20:10were so extreme
20:11and I was writing so much.
20:12Jack is a hybrid
20:13between Tim and myself.
20:15On the one hand,
20:16you know,
20:17he's got a lot of
20:18Tim's eccentricities
20:19and the other hand,
20:20his schizophrenic nature
20:21is much like my own
20:23in terms of talking
20:24himself into stuff.
20:26I've read these Christmas
20:27books so many times.
20:29I know the stories
20:30and I know the rhymes.
20:32I know the Christmas
20:33carols all by heart.
20:35My skull's so full
20:36it's tearing me apart.
20:38The beauty of Jack
20:39is that he talks himself into
20:41realizing what Christmas
20:42is all about
20:43and when he's down in pieces
20:44in the graveyard
20:45and he's screwed
20:46everything up completely,
20:47nothing happens to convince him
20:48that he's the pumpkin king again,
20:49he just talks himself into it.
20:51Well, what the heck!
20:54I went and did my best
20:56and by God,
20:57I really tasted
20:58something swell.
21:00And this enthusiasm
21:02was really contagious.
21:04I really got into it
21:05and I really began to like
21:06going from the ups and downs
21:08and the highs and lows
21:09and being able to really
21:10stretch the voice around.
21:12It was so much fun.
21:13And unlike Tim,
21:15Jack was very talkative.
21:18He talks and talks and talks.
21:20You can't shut him up,
21:21so that's the side of Jack
21:23that's like me.
21:24In his songs,
21:25he just, he sees anything
21:26and he just goes on and on
21:27and on and on describing it.
21:29What's this, what's this?
21:30There's color everywhere.
21:31What's this?
21:32There's white things
21:33in the air.
21:34What's this?
21:35I can't believe my eyes.
21:36I must be dreaming.
21:37Wake up, Jack,
21:38this isn't fair.
21:39What's this?
21:40It's really fun
21:41and he gets to do
21:42some really delicious moments.
21:44I think my favorite is
21:46where he's explaining
21:48to Halloweenland
21:49he's just found Christmas
21:50and he's explaining
21:51these objects he's brought back,
21:53you know,
21:54these presents and things.
21:55This is a thing
21:56called a present.
21:57The whole thing
21:58starts with a box.
21:59And they just don't get it.
22:00It's a box.
22:01It's an experiment.
22:02The locks are filled
22:03with a pox.
22:04A pox,
22:05how do you like the pox?
22:06And they just,
22:07they keep thinking,
22:08well, what is it
22:09that's interesting?
22:10Is it horrible?
22:11And he's going,
22:12no, no, no, no.
22:13And finally at the end,
22:14he conjures up this tale
22:15of Sandy Claws
22:16and he says,
22:17we'll give them
22:18what they want.
22:19And on a dark, cold night,
22:20under full moonlight,
22:22he flies into a fog
22:24like a vulture in the sky.
22:28That was so much fun to do.
22:30And then all of a sudden,
22:31well, the best I must confess,
22:33I'm saved for the last.
22:35And he really,
22:37now he's got their attention.
22:39And they call him
22:42Sandy Claws!
22:48laughs
22:50I did the demos,
22:51and at a certain point,
22:52I went to Tim and I said,
22:55there's a lot of better singers
22:56than I am,
22:58but Jack is for me.
23:01He is Mitty and Tim McGrave.
23:05I don't believe
23:07what's happening to me
23:11My hopes, my dreams,
23:15my fantasy
23:22Edward?
23:28Are you okay?
23:31Yes, are you okay?
23:38I think what's great about it
23:40is it has probably everything.
23:45I know a lot of people
23:46say that about the movies,
23:47but I think this one
23:48really does have the romance
23:50and the fairy tale,
23:51and it's a thriller,
23:52and it has everything.
23:55It's a great combo platter.
23:58Sort of a mixed bag.
23:59I think if you have
24:02any expectations,
24:03you'll have to throw them out
24:05as soon as you walk in.
24:06Yeah.
24:07Coming up,
24:08we've got more
24:09Frightfully Funny Flicks.
24:11electronic music plays
24:29Things happen.
24:30We're not very good
24:31at haunting our house,
24:32and we don't do
24:33a very good job,
24:34so we have to get help.
24:36Michael Keaton comes
24:38as a ghost ghost.
24:39He's dead.
24:40He's dead in this film,
24:41and he's dead in this town.
24:43He's a living doll to me.
24:45It says,
24:46live people ignore
24:47the strange and unusual.
24:50She's a really great character,
24:51but you know, she's real.
24:53I myself am
24:54strange and unusual.
24:56You know, she's like,
24:57you know when you get
24:58in those moods
24:59where you feel really dramatic
25:00and you just sigh all the time?
25:02Well, she's like that
25:03all the time.
25:04Feel your liking up.
25:06I would rather talk about...
25:08Hey!
25:11Hey!
25:13I play, I guess,
25:14a bad stepmother.
25:17Aw, not really.
25:19I'm misdirected, ill-directed.
25:22A woman who thinks
25:23she's an artist
25:25and was just too defensive
25:26and too insecure
25:27and too much of a nutcase
25:29to succeed at anything,
25:30including being a mother,
25:33stepmother, or wife.
25:35But I'm trying.
25:36If you don't let me
25:37gut out this house
25:38and make it my own,
25:39I will go insane
25:40and I will take you with me!
25:42It's the most creative
25:43of all the movies I've done.
25:48Beetlejuice.
25:50It's showtime.
25:51I show up 6 o'clock
25:52every morning,
25:543 1⁄2 hours of makeup,
25:55hour and a half,
25:56taking it off at night,
25:58doing and saying
25:59some of the oddest
26:03strangest things
26:04I've ever said
26:07in front of a camera,
26:09and having
26:10one hell of a good time.
26:13I just want you two to know,
26:14you're welcome in our house
26:16anytime you want to come over.
26:18Beetlejuice is kind of
26:19a creepy little devilish
26:22funny character,
26:23a guy who's been dead
26:24for 300 years,
26:26and he scares
26:27the living out of us.
26:30Although it's you
26:32Work all night,
26:33gotta drink our rum
26:36Daylight come,
26:37nightly won't go
26:40Stock banana
26:41till the morning come
26:44Daylight come,
26:45nightly won't go
26:48You're gonna see things
26:49in this movie
26:50you've never seen before.
26:51I think people are gonna
26:52be mind-blown
26:53by what they see
26:54on a visual level.
26:55I'm alive for a few scenes
26:56in the beginning,
26:57but then basically
26:58I'm your average dead person
26:59in this movie,
27:00and finding out
27:01what that's all about.
27:03Beetlejuice!
27:04Eee!
27:05Pfft!
27:06Pfft!
27:07Pfft!
27:08Beetlejuice!
27:09I was attracted to this movie
27:10because it's so unique.
27:13When I read it, I said,
27:14well, I just have to be
27:15in this movie.
27:16I try to think about
27:17how people will react
27:18when they see it,
27:19and I think they'll just say,
27:21what was that?
27:23Did you see that movie?
27:24It's like, you have to see it.
27:26It's weird.
27:27Come, Mr. Taliban,
27:29tally me banana.
27:31They like to come
27:32and they want to go home.
27:35Come, Mr. Taliban,
27:37tally me banana.
27:39They like to come
27:40and they want to go home.
27:43I've learned a lot
27:44about special effects
27:46and directing
27:48from the director,
27:49Tim Burton, who's great.
27:51It's gonna go down
27:52in my memory
27:54as one of the great movies
27:56that I'll ever work on, I think.
27:58Work, work, work, Senora,
28:00work your body line.
28:02Work, work, work, Senora,
28:04work it all the time.
28:06Coming up, we are taking you
28:08behind the scenes
28:09of Hocus Pocus.
28:11♪♪
28:19♪♪
28:29Hocus Pocus has been casting
28:31a spell on audiences
28:32for decades,
28:34and ET has been there
28:35since the very beginning.
28:39And now you've gone.
28:42I've never done a picture
28:43with this kind of special effects
28:45with the flying
28:46and electricity
28:47coming out of your hands.
28:48Bette Midler,
28:49Sarah Jessica Parker,
28:50and Kathy McJimmy
28:51were sisters who cast spells,
28:53hexes,
28:54and drew up evil potions.
28:57For that marvelous introduction.
28:59I think Bette is nothing
29:00short of a genius,
29:01I really do.
29:03SJP donned a blonde wig
29:05and took to the sky
29:06on her groom.
29:08We spent about four weeks
29:09working on flying,
29:11and have worked on it,
29:13when the camera's not rolling,
29:14I come in early
29:15and rehearse it,
29:16and I do my own stunts
29:18in this,
29:19and it's just been great fun.
29:22But Bette found
29:23the broomstick riding
29:24a little more challenging.
29:26Come, we fly!
29:28It was very, very hard,
29:29because you had to hold
29:31onto that broom
29:33and make all these gestures
29:36and carry on and act
29:37at the same time.
29:38It was really tough.
29:40Can we do this again, please?
29:42Along with the special effects,
29:43the witches also had to wear
29:45old age makeup.
29:46They pull your skin,
29:47and then they paint like rubber,
29:49just like liquid rubber,
29:50and then they take a blow dryer
29:51and blow it,
29:52and then squish it,
29:53so you have tons and tons
29:54of wrinkles.
29:55I lure the child evil.
29:56SJP was not totally on board
29:58with the old age part.
30:00Oh, I was horrified,
30:02and I could see
30:03places on my face
30:04that I'm gonna need to worry about.
30:06It's a great lesson in gravity
30:08and what it really does.
30:10It's just a bunch
30:11of hocus-pocus!
30:13It's the biggest risk
30:14I've ever taken.
30:15It's the most courageous
30:16I've ever been.
30:17Bye-bye!
30:20Coming up, we have Megan Fox
30:22talking all about Jennifer's body.
30:36Jennifer's body may not
30:37have made a scream
30:38at the box office,
30:39but it has gone on
30:40to become a cult classic.
30:42In 2019, E.T. reunited
30:44the writer Diablo Cody
30:46and star Megan Fox
30:47to discuss their often
30:49misunderstood film.
30:51Heard you're new in town
30:54Want someone to show you around
30:56I've been looking for you
30:58I've been looking for you
31:00I've been looking for you
31:02I've been looking for you
31:04Want someone to show you around
31:05Well, no one knows
31:06this place just quite like
31:08I gotta go.
31:09I am a god.
31:11Okay.
31:12Something that people
31:13actually do ask me about a lot
31:15and I don't ever have
31:16the answers for
31:17is like the inception
31:18of this project.
31:19So, I have a specific question
31:21of my own, but just in general
31:22for you, how did it start
31:24and how did I get involved
31:26in this movie?
31:27And Amanda and everyone else.
31:29Well, okay, so I specifically
31:31my entire life had dreamed
31:33of writing a horror movie.
31:34I'm a huge horror fan.
31:36And it's, I had, you know,
31:38at the time that I wrote
31:39Jennifer's Body,
31:40I'd only done one feature
31:41at that point.
31:42I had written Juno,
31:43which is not a horror movie
31:45unless you think
31:46Unwanted Pregnancy is a horror,
31:47which I guess it kind of is.
31:48I know a few of those people.
31:49Yeah, so for me,
31:50it was just the fulfillment
31:51of a dream.
31:52And Juno had been
31:53a successful movie,
31:54so coming off of that,
31:55I was sort of given
31:56carte blanche to write
31:57anything that I wanted.
31:59And it's very rare
32:00for a screenwriter
32:01to have that kind
32:02of creative freedom.
32:03And indeed, I have not
32:04enjoyed that level
32:05of creative freedom since.
32:07So I just thought,
32:08all right, this is it.
32:09Like, I'm gonna write
32:10my crazy gonzo horror movie,
32:12and I want it to be
32:13female-focused.
32:14I want it to be about
32:15a female friendship.
32:16And I specifically want it
32:17to be about a girl
32:18who eats boys.
32:20I want it to be about, like,
32:21cannibalism and about sex
32:22and empowerment and revenge
32:24and all that stuff.
32:25And I just, I knew
32:26what I wanted.
32:27And so I wrote the script,
32:29and that was,
32:30if I recall correctly,
32:32a very free-flowing
32:34and exciting
32:35and easy process.
32:37And I think I was aware
32:39of how bizarre it was.
32:41Like, right off the bat,
32:42I was like,
32:43this is not a super
32:44commercial movie.
32:45But I was lucky enough
32:47to get Karin Kusama
32:48attached to direct,
32:49and then the big question
32:50became,
32:51who's gonna play Jennifer?
32:53And honestly,
32:55everybody else,
32:56like, for instance,
32:57the character Anita,
32:58like, we read a lot
32:59of people,
33:00and we talked
33:01to a lot of actresses.
33:02I remember sitting down
33:03with, like, Emma Stone
33:04and, like,
33:05but before we realized
33:07that Amanda Seyfried
33:08was clearly perfect
33:09for the part.
33:10But Jennifer,
33:11we always knew
33:12that was you.
33:13There was no question
33:14about it.
33:15I'm sure you remember
33:16being approached, like,
33:17early on in the process.
33:18Yeah.
33:19What was it about me
33:20that made you think
33:21that I could play
33:22a psychopath
33:23that devours boys?
33:24Do you know what it was?
33:25I think,
33:28And this is a compliment.
33:29Okay.
33:30You have mystique,
33:32which not a lot of,
33:34particularly now
33:35in this era of social media
33:37and people being
33:38completely accessible,
33:39it's rare.
33:41She can fly?
33:43She's just hovering.
33:44It's not that impressive.
33:46God, do you have to undermine
33:47everything that I do?
33:49You are such a player hater.
33:52You're a jerk.
33:54Wow, nice insult,
33:55Hannah Montana.
33:56When I first saw it,
33:57I was so thrilled.
33:58I left the edit.
33:59I was overwhelmed.
34:00I was in tears.
34:01And Mason,
34:03our producer,
34:04was with me
34:05and we were both so happy.
34:06So then when the movie
34:07was screened,
34:08we were knocked
34:09for a loop
34:10because we,
34:11But what happened
34:12at the screening?
34:13People were like,
34:14we hate it.
34:15People eviscerated.
34:16Did they not understand
34:17that it was a comedy?
34:18Were they disappointed
34:19it wasn't a straight
34:20horror movie?
34:21What were they upset about?
34:22So they had recruited
34:23two types of people
34:24for the screening.
34:25I'm gathering,
34:26based on the data
34:27we received,
34:28people who were
34:29huge fans of Juno.
34:30Okay.
34:31Which is not
34:32the same kind of movie.
34:34And many of whom
34:37were horrified
34:38and said,
34:39I came here to see
34:40a cute movie like Juno
34:41and there is murder
34:43in this,
34:44you know,
34:45it was like,
34:46they were not even prepared
34:47to see a horror film.
34:48And then the other part
34:50of the audience
34:51was guys
34:52who wanted to see
34:53something very specific
34:54and new.
34:55What age group
34:56were the guys?
34:57I mean,
34:58if I had to guess,
34:59I would say
35:00they were 18 to 24.
35:01Okay.
35:02The coveted,
35:03precious,
35:04white male,
35:0518 to 24 demographic
35:06was there.
35:07I do not recall
35:08seeing a lot of girls there.
35:09At all.
35:10You know what's funny
35:11is people assume,
35:12like they assumed,
35:13that most of my fan base
35:14is male
35:15and it's not true,
35:16it's young girls.
35:17Oh,
35:18I know that
35:19from looking at
35:20Instagram and Twitter
35:21and the posts that I get sent.
35:22Yeah.
35:23Early 20s,
35:24like you said.
35:25Yeah.
35:26Females.
35:27Wow.
35:28Moveon.org.
35:29Needy,
35:30it's over.
35:31Life is too short
35:32to be moping around
35:33about some white trash
35:34pig roast.
35:35That's sweet,
35:36Jen.
35:37And I don't like
35:38anything that I do,
35:39but even I,
35:40after seeing the movie,
35:41was like,
35:42this is a great,
35:43great movie.
35:44I expected to get,
35:45that's what was
35:46always happening
35:47and I figured
35:48it was going to
35:49continue to happen.
35:50But I was surprised
35:51that the movie itself
35:52has grown like
35:53year after year
35:54after year.
35:55It's growing this,
35:56I don't even know if it's,
35:57can it even be considered
35:58a cult following
35:59at this point?
36:00I feel like it's
36:01broken through
36:02where it's just
36:03a lot of people
36:04are obsessed
36:05with this movie.
36:06So the million dollar question,
36:07when can we get a sequel?
36:08All right,
36:09coming up,
36:10we have two Hollywood legends
36:11whose film changed
36:12visual effects forever.
36:23Death Becomes Her
36:24asks the age old question,
36:25is immortality
36:26all it's cracked up to be?
36:27What if you got
36:28to spend it though
36:29with Meryl Streep
36:30and Goldie Hawn?
36:31ET was with the team
36:32behind the groundbreaking film.
36:33En garde!
36:34It was great to be evil
36:35and not be a hero.
36:36I'm not a hero.
36:37I'm a woman.
36:38I'm a woman.
36:39I'm a woman.
36:40I'm a woman.
36:41I'm a woman.
36:42I'm a woman.
36:43I'm a woman.
36:44I'm a woman.
36:45I'm a woman.
36:46I'm a woman.
36:47I'm a woman.
36:48I'm a woman.
36:49I'm a woman.
36:50I'm a woman.
36:51I'll be evil and naughty
36:52and just let it fly.
36:58Yes!
36:59Because I don't usually
37:00get to play straight ahead
37:02sort of bimbo villains.
37:04She was just
37:05out and out
37:06you know,
37:07bad girl.
37:08She's dead!
37:10She is.
37:11Before Meryl was cast
37:12as fiance stealing actress
37:13Madeline,
37:14she actually
37:15wanted the role
37:16that went to Goldie.
37:17I have a hole
37:18in my stomach!
37:19How about that
37:20How about that character?
37:22How about the idea of living forever?
37:25In the dark comedy, Goldie's out for revenge
37:27on her former friend, but they both take the same potion
37:30that promises immortality
37:32and turns them into the living dead.
37:34The fight is all over a man,
37:36a doctor played by Bruce Willis.
37:38I see a very, very bad situation developing here.
37:41He's just a pathetic guy.
37:42He's just a little slow, that's all.
37:44It was exciting, it was challenging,
37:45it was new things, it was special effects,
37:48which was a new area for us, for all of us.
37:50Yeah, the movie won an Oscar for those special effects
37:53and made history as the first film to CGI human skin.
37:57So I fall down the stairs
37:58and I break my neck in several places
38:00and my head is on backwards, but I'm still alive.
38:03You pushed me down the stairs.
38:06Ah!
38:08Oh my God!
38:09And cut.
38:10I wore a bag over my head.
38:13Did the whole scene like this, you know, with a bag.
38:16I just have to make a telephone call.
38:18Six weeks or I don't know how long later,
38:21I went back and replicated the performance
38:23that I'd done backwards, strapped in a chair,
38:26and then they took my face,
38:27put it on top of the backwards body.
38:32As for this iconic scene,
38:36that's actually an animatronic puppet.
38:38This thing stands up into frame
38:41and you suddenly realize that she's got this hole through.
38:43That was totally uncalled for.
38:48E.T. went behind the scenes with the geniuses
38:50who created the Goldie and Meryl robots.
38:53Tell you about pain!
38:55Meryl pulls her head up and snaps it back into place.
38:59And to do that, we had several different puppets.
39:01I will not speak to you till you put your head on straight.
39:07That's it for Frightfully Funny Flicks,
39:10but stick around because we have more great content
39:13for you right here on E.T.
